This past weekend, the fam came to visit and take in the holiday festivities downtown.  Now that things have settled down and we're all back home in Michigan to celebrate Christmas, I got some much needed photo editing done

Hope you enjoy and Happy Holidays!

1.  Before my vacation started, it began with an important competition I was working on.  Pulled an all nighter, but got the rest of my Friday off.  I took a few pictures that night (and early morning)

Chicago looks great! And the Grand Lux is soo good...jealous.

thx for this great thread -- the capital of the midwest is looking festive!

thanks, great photos; but just looking at the atrium & escalators in Field's (Macy's, whatever it is now) iduces vertigo. I wonder how many people have plunged to their deaths there (this was happening at the NYU main library atrium a couple of years ago...then again, they were only NYU students. okay, sorry). And didn't Sterling Lindner in Cleveland have an atrium, where they put up a huge Christmas tree every year? I have a vague memory of that.

thanks for tying those things all together evdon,

you're quite the bundle of holiday cheer!  :?

I'm sorry, but I have good reasons. The heat in my building was barely on yesterday (It's back today). I try not to be too cynical, but I'm positive this was planned. I'm sure my landlord's thinking goes something like this: since there are so many young people in the building who go away back home to their families for the holidays (and yes, it has been blissfully quieter!), why should he waste precious heating fuel on the handful who remain. Additionally, my kitchen drain is severely clogged, and I admit I have no one else to blame--too many poppy seeds from bagels and grounds from a coffee press add up to disaster. Now, back to the topic. What was it again?? :?

haha. same here. heat, mice, clogged kitchen sink (i should do something about that...eh later), young neighbors left for the new year...!

re clogged sink: try baking soda and white vinegar. That worked a little for me; well, for a while...http://www.drainsandplumbing.com/cleardrainblockage.html -- at least it's not corrosive to the plumbing.

In history no one has ever gone over the railing.  It's actually difficult to look over the edge of the modern atrium like I did.  I had to crawl behind a display and the railing was high.  Not sure why anyone would fall over or want to for that matter in a department store of all places

Christmastime in Chicago is wonderful - a dense, visually-compelling downtown chock-full of people. The place overflows with energy.

Superb photo thread!

I'm uber jealous of the Christkindlmarket...I'm gonna see if I can help get one started here in Cincy next year.  Thanks for the inspiration.

.....and shoplifters!

^ that would be Eaton Centre in Toronto during boxing day.

Honey I know a booster when I see one.  '08 my niece and I watched a woman walk out of a certain store in the Drake Hotel with a $7,500 bag and didn't blink.

I still think the Eaton Centre is the worst place I've ever seen shoplifting.  That SportChek place near the entrance probably regrets putting in that open mezzanine so close to the concourse.  I remember people chucking merchandise over the railings where their accomplices would make a break for the exit or subway.
