New Ohio Union features the Archie Griffin ballroom

Thursday,  January 14, 2010 - 3:19 AM

By Encarnacion Pyle

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

As a student, Archie Griffin treated the Ohio Union as his home away from home.  He studied there.  He bowled, hung out and met friends there.  And he shot the breeze with fellow Ohio State football players at training-table meals there.  So Griffin says there's no greater honor than learning that the grand ballroom of the new $118 million Ohio Union will be named after him.

"The new union is an absolutely amazing place," Griffin said. "It blows the mind."

Ohio State University will announce the news today.  The new union will open in April.  An unidentified couple will donate $1 million to name the ballroom after Griffin and help offset the union's construction costs.  They also have pledged to give $1 million to create an endowment fund for the OSU Alumni Association, which Griffin leads.  The money will support the association's operations.

From Columbus Underground:

The New Ohio Union Opens on March 29th

On Monday, March 29th, The Ohio State University will open their newly built Ohio Union to the public.  The 12:00pm opening take place following an 11:00am reception on the Union grounds.  A full listing of opening day and upcoming events at the new Union can be found here.

I wish I could get down from Akron for this; meetings unfortunately make that impossible.  I spent way too much time in that building as an undergrad--plus somewhere in all of that is a brick I paid for, and I want to know where it is! :-)

The actually building looks better than the renderings, but to me it still looks like a suburban office building...some what out of place on campus.  Much better, however, than Hitler's bunker that CSU is building on Euclid Avenue.

That said, the interiors look great and everyone should be jealous of todays OSU student with all the amenities.

I don't think it looks out of place on campus; in fact, most campus buildings are brick and are not overly avant-garde with respect to "contemporary" styling.  I wouldn't have wanted another Knowlton Hall.

It's not as singular and instantly recognizable as Orton, perhaps, but I'm OK with that.

SPOILED KIDS!!!

SPOILED KIDS!!!

No doubt about it.  OSU's treating their current students too well!

Seriously though, there really have been some major upgrades on the campus within the past few years.

From the Dispatch article on the Ohio Union opening: "The Ohio Union is the latest addition to the university's facilities for students; including the newly remodeled William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library, which opened in September, and the nearly 5-year-old Recreation and Physical Activity Center."

OHIO UNION RIBBON-CUTTING

One giant 'hangout'

Students thrilled with all 'the biggest and the best' offers; monthlong celebration begins

By Charlie Boss, THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

With the fanfare of a tailgate party, Ohio State University opened its new $118 million student union yesterday.  More than 3,000 students flooded through the Ohio Union's three major entrances for the noon opening of the three-story, 318,000-square-foot building on N. High Street.

Too bad it's wasted on the majority of undeserving OSU students. Anyhoo...

Nice.

Too bad it's wasted on the majority of undeserving OSU students. Anyhoo...

What does that mean?

That's gorgeous.  What all does it offer?

Too bad it's wasted on the majority of undeserving OSU students. Anyhoo...

What does that mean?

Go to Sloppy Donkey, The O Patio, Sloopy's, other typical campus bars  and you'll see exactly what that means. And take a walk down E 15th if  you can stomach it. Back on topic, I like the inside better than the  outside, but that's an improvement too. I'm happy with the new union,  just wish it were built when I was a student.

Not only are the OSU students undeserving, they're ungrateful too!  At least the architecture students are anyway.

Check out this video from the Dispatch - Ohio State throws a huge party to celebrate the new Ohio Union, but some architecture students protest the building's design.

It also looks like one of the architecture students may have started this thread at Columbus Underground too - Hating the Ohio Union.

And no, this is not an April's Fools Day joke!

It apparently did not sufficiently resemble an origami project or a something from the Jetsons to placate the architecture students.  Personally, though, I'm more inclined to cringe every time I see Knowlton than every time I see the new Ohio Union.

I went on Saturday to check it out and I must say the interior is way better than the exterior.  Loved the emphasis of natural lighting and the "Marketplace" seemed like a better option than Wendy's, Chick-Fil-A, and Taco Maker.

I lived on 15th and Indianola and gaging your comments, most specifically about 15th, it seems you have an axe to grind with the Greek community... sounds like a typical remark that I've heard so many times.  Did you get beat up by frat boys on 15th or something??

i agree though, it seems architecturally uninspired from the exterior.  It looks very Fisher College of Business to me.  The look is great for a business school.  But for the Union....eh.

We have already heard the opinions from the architecture students at the grand opening of the new Ohio Union on the Ohio State University campus.  Here are some others.  First, Dispatch opinion columnist Joe Blundo has his take on the new Union.

So to Speak:  Ohio Union feels right as campus living room

From a Big Ten blog at ESPN, Heyward still loving life at Ohio State, a quote from returning senior defensive lineman Cameron Heyward:

"Cameron Heyward still enjoys being a kid at Ohio State.  He might be the first college football star in history to gush about new facilities and not be referring to a weight room, a players' lounge or some other addition to the detached athletic complex.  "Being on campus, all these new facilities we got are great," he said last week.  "You know, the new [student] union."

And finally from blogging basketball benchwarmer Mark Titus of his noted Club Trillion blog.  His take on the new Union from his twitter feed:

"Toured new Ohio Union.  My review: Toilets are spacious & comfortable but I'm stunned $118 million can't buy higher quality toilet paper."

This is kind of cool:

Ya beat me to the post Clevelander.  I was going to post that after I finished posting those grand opening photos.  But I took too long messing around with the photos. :-)

I didn't want the video to get buried behind all the photos, so I'll repost it here.

Looks like fun doesn't it.

Oh Gordon LOL!

The interior looks very impressive from the video and the pictures posted above.  Obviously the exterior is a little more vanilla, but still.
