Posted January 3, 201015 yr During my trip Upstate I visited several cities (mostly smaller ones). I stopped by Utica for a bit before the rain hit. Utica is the seat of Oneida County. It has a pop ~ 60,000 (down from 100,000 in the 30s, 40s, and 50s) and is the main city in the Utica-Rome Metro area (pop approx. 300,000). The city is kind of a poster child for many places in Upstate NY. Losing manufacturing jobs & population has taken a toll on the city. Here's a link for more info (some good stuff there I never knew): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utica,_ny It's the birthplace of both the first F.W. Woolworth Five'n Dime stores empire as well as my favorite Mousketeer, Annette Funicello. Here's some pics with a few comments. And the weather held up nicely for this stop. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. $99 bridal gowns. 8. At least the rubble is in a nice pile. 9. 10. And I always though it was in Philly. 11. 12. An old gem from 1912 (renovated in 2000) the Hotel Utica. I believe the top 4 floors were added some time after the original building. The company the bought and renovated the Hotel went belly up. I think it is now for sale. 13. 14. 15. 16. The Masonic Temple 17. A small sidewalk park next to the Temple. 18. 19. 20. Another gem, the Stanley Theatre http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Theater_(Utica,_New_York) 21. 22. 23. 24. There's a small cafe (about 15 seats) on the first floor. 25. South Bend isn't the only place with a Gold Dome. 26. 27. 28. 29. 30. 31. Balconies look a bit unsafe.:( 32. 1/2 block from the above picture. 33. Looks like an old factory reuse (and there's a ton of old empty factories) 34. 35. At least the strip joint looks OK. 36. 37. 38. 39. Goodbye from Utica Hope you enjoyed. :-D

According to Wikipedia, it was in some sort of financial trouble? Also, I didn't know the National Register for Historic Preservation had a list just for hotels. They do and the Hotel Utica is on it. Nice thread.
January 19, 201015 yr Good pictures of a very sad city. But you overlooked one magnificent downtown building, Union Station!
