That playoff game might be the worst moment in Cincinnati sports history - at least of my lifetime. If only for the fact that the game was all but won in the closing minutes, and then so quickly went awry.

It's up there with Kenyon's leg, Kimo the assassin taking out Carson Palmer's knee, the Reds managing to lose a playoff series after winning the first 2 games in San Francisco, and that Phillies no-hitter playoff game. What else am I missing?

Yeah - that was a tough one.

I am one of 34 people I know coming down for the Browns game on a charter bus. The bus company said they have 11 buses booked to Cincinnati for that weekend. All in all, ticket/bus/drink wristband I'm paying $120 for the trip.

There will probably be more Browns fans than Bengals fans at that game. A lot of fans here are like myself - we don't fall for the "fair weather fan" label nonsense. I still watch pretty much every game, but I won't spend my money on something that sucks. If my favorite restaurant started to serve poop sandwiches instead of hamburgers, I wouldn't keep going because I'm a supporter.

I've stopped following the NFL in general. The only thing keeping me slightly engaged is a fantasy league I'm in with friends I don't see often. Even then, I don't know who most of the players are on my team. It's all about the numbers and a little googling. Currently sitting 3-1 with the most points after a disappointing week 4 where I lost by 2 points.

It's just like with Dusty Baker.  The Bengals are now significantly worse after removal of that coach who "couldn't win the big game".  Guys who call in to sports talk radio are amazingly dumb.

Because they like Hail Marys.

A lot of those guys seem like they had a fawning affection for some little league coach, or maybe their only good experiences with their dad were sports-related.

In fairness, I think this team would still be 0-5 with Lewis at the helm. The problems start higher up than the head coach.

Or maybe in a 32-team league 16 of them have to have .500 or worse records each year and year-over-year.  That's how numbers work.  Most super bowl winners suck 2 years later.

At the start of the season, Cincinnati was the 12th best team of the decade:

There are two teams at the top (Patriots and Steelers) who seem to have it all figured out. The Browns are at the bottom, way below everyone else. The rest of the league is within sight of the mean. They're separated be a few fumbles, highlight reel catches, bad calls by the refs, etc.

The Bengals definitely could have made it to and won the Super Bowl in 2015-16 if not for the weirdest minute in the history of football.

You cannot tell me this roster would be 0-9 and getting absolutely SMOKED with Marvin Lewis

Why not?

And what difference does it make? We weren't going to be competitive this year with or without Marvin. He was a below average coach who had somehow stayed at the helm of an NFL team for 16 years without winning a playoff game. Marvin Lewis doesn't deserve anyone's sympathies. He had his opportunity. Way more than any other coach would be given.

Before he was let go there were high school students who had never been alive when Marvin Lewis wasn't the head coach of the Bengals.

It doesn't really bother me because I've largely given up on the Bengals and the NFL. I just think the reminiscing about Marvin Lewis is laughable.

I'm not sure the reminiscence is what people are laughing at right now, though - is my point

Bungle for Borrow is still on and that's all that matters. Marvin Lewis had his chances and couldn't win when it mattered.

Not sure what your point is. I took it as "why would you fire Marvin Lewis". Which I think is a really bad take. I don't know what else I could have gotten from it.

If you had said "maybe Marvin wasn't the problem" I would generally agree with that, though Marvin did have the pieces to contend for a Super Bowl on two separate occasions and couldn't make it work. The biggest problem is and always has been Mike Brown.

^It was Marvin wasn't the problem. Dude choked when it mattered, I get that

Marvin wasn't "the" problem, but he was "a" problem. No reason he needed to stick around, and no one in Cincinnati would care if the Bengals were 3-6 instead of 0-9. It would actually be objectively worse because of how dumb the draft order is decided. It needs to be done in a lottery system like the NBA uses where last place doesn't guarantee you the #1 pick.

The problem is that it's really, really hard to keep a good team together in the NFL.  There are 32 teams meaning each team, statistically, should win 3 Super Bowls per century, but in reality several will go 100 years without winning one or even appearing.  That has happened in baseball with The Cubs going 108 years between championships, despite many of those seasons being back when MLB was well under 20 teams.

Look at how spectacularly The Falcons have fallen after having just appeared in Super Bowl LI.  Nobody talks about the 9-year streak when The Patriots didn't win a Super Bowl under Brady or the time when golden boy John Elway was blown out 55-10 in Super Bowl XXIV.

Come on Bengals.  Win this game!

  • 3 weeks later...

Bengals officially now 1 loss away from Joe Burrow. One more loss either at Miami or vs Brownies clinches the 1st pick in the draft.

This is the Bengals, we are 1 loss away from Mike Brown getting Andrew Thomas out of Georgia.

Bengals secured the #1 draft pick in the most dramatic way possible.

They were down 35-19 with 30 seconds left, and managed to score 16 points, including a laser of a hail mary as time expired, to send the game to OT, where they lost.

That game was hilarious.  Almost nobody was physically there and my sense is only a few thousand people were watching at home!

A hearty "Thank you!" from up North along I-71!

wow.

That was so satisfying to watch the Steelers lose again.

Way to go Bengals!

Somehow people in my area had fireworks ready to go for this occasion.

The all orange alternates are top three uniforms in the league along with the Chargers' powder blues and Dolphins' teal uniforms. We also have great helmets, one of the few along with the Vikings and Browns that doesn't just have the logo itself slapped on it. As long as we keep the striped helmets and a lot of orange I'll be happy, but this years NBA uniforms have all gotten uglier so I'm not confident.

From worst to first, the Bengals defeat KC to clinch the AFC North and a spot in the playoffs:

The Raiders made it a bit uncomfortable with that final drive - but the Bengals defense stopped them to get their first playoff win in 31 years(!)

THE BENGALS ARE GOING TO THE AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME!

Here's how they did it:

The offensive line was roooough. Gotta improve if the bengals want to get to the super bowl.

Joe Burrow was sacked NINE TIMES in last weekend's win over Tennessee.  Apparently the highest sack total for a playoff-winning team(!)  The Bengals probably shouldn't attempt that again.  The KC offense is much better than the Titans offense.

Today's game has all the makings of an offensive shootout with two of the top QB's in the AFC.  The Bengals are 7-point underdogs - which is understandable.  But the Bengals also beat KC 34-31 in PBS on the second-to-last regular season game to clinch their playoff berth.

LET'S GO BENGALS 🐯 🏈

Then Bengals MUST limit KC and Mahomes.  Slowing the game down and the defense stepping up as they did in the week 17 win will be key to keeping the Bengal train moving!! KC will probably try everything in their power to get the Bengals down early, as has happened a few times this season.  But I think that was early on and the team has momentum that will be hard to counter.

I'm calling this game 31-30 BENGALS!!!!

The Bengals were down 21-10 at halftime.  But its tied 21-21 going into the fourth quarter because the Bengals defense picked off Mahomes and then Burrow drove for a TD and a 2-PT'er.

Bengals are up 24-21 at the two-minute warning(!)

But KC has the ball on the CIN 15.

KC nearly fumbled away their possession, but they kicked a game-tying FG to send it into overtime.

And KC wins the coin flip.

The Bengals intercept Mahomes on their OT possession.  Burrow drives the Bengals down to inside the 15 for a GAME-WINNING FIELD GOAL!!!!

THE BENGALS ARE GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL!!!!

Well played Bengals! That stop right on HT changed the momentum of the whole game. Mahomes knew he’d messed up a chance to put the game to bed early and his head went in the second half. That said, the Bengals still needed to get the points and Burrow et al all stepped up superbly.
