My first thought was maybe he was playing with a concussion. He's been known as a pretty big hitter. Really sad and scary to see. After the cpr I'm just glad he's still alive.

Been around football a lot in my day and his actions post-hit didn't make me think concussion at all. On the flip side of that, the fact that he popped up engaged with another player and nearly five seconds after the hit, fell over like a tree was highly concerning right away. Just not a thing you see on the football field as a reaction to common football injuries.

And @Brutus_buckeyethat was my exact thing...had Hank Gathers vibe and then I thought of John McSherry.

Lastly, there was an article about all the bad injuries that have happened in Cincy. Hamlin, Shazier, Burfict, Tua, McSherry, Pollack.

I was thinking on Monday that racing was far more accustomed to this than the NFL.

I was looking away at the time so didn't see him fall backward. But I did think that he had died. Here's why I thought he may have been playing with a previous concussion:

Second impact syndrome  (SIS) is a potential complication from an athlete returning to a game before symptoms from a minor head injury have subsided. The initial injury may be a concussion, or it may be another, more severe, type of head trauma, such as cerebral contusion. Also, the second impact may be very minor, even a blow such as an impact to the chest that causes the head to jerk, thereby transmitting forces of acceleration to the brain.

......

The mortality rate for SIS approaches 50%, and morbidity (disability) is almost 100%

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second-impact_syndrome

Anyhow, glad to see the guy's improving. I lost a good friend and teammate at age 27. He very much looked the picture of perfect health, but apparently had an unknown heart defect and died during a pickup soccer game.

Outside of the venue, there really was no correlation. Pollack broke his neck on a freak play, Tua was tackled and was still recovering from a concussion so it made the hit much worse, Shazier had a history of leading with his head when he tackled, it just so happened that he was injured in Cincy; McSherry was just in bad health and then of course Hamlin was a freak accident. - I know you were not making a correlation to playing field or such but it is interesting the events.

I always thought of the old Pontiac Silverdome as a cursed field in the past. Ki-Jana blew his new out there, there always seemed to be someone from the Lions or opposing teams having a career ending injury there. That is another example of a strange connection.

Everyone of sound mind knows not to race or jump motorcycles.  Motocross involves racing and jumping.  So you're racing and jumping with a field of 25 guys who would rather do motocross than physically survive.

The NFL's top defensive players seem to be more insane than any of its offensive players.  Vontaze Burfict was pretty much a motocross guy but out there on a football field.

Yeah, and more so than is generally seen in any other sport.  Baseball and basketball occasionally see a big-time defensive players, but football is really where such personalities are able to go totally nuts.  The goalies in hockey and soccer don't compare in the least to the dominant NFL defensive backs.  Nobody lining up for a penalty kick in soccer is scared of the goalie.  It's not like that guy is going to come screaming out of the goalie box and administer a career-ending injury.

I would argue that there are plenty of NHL defensemen that are "enforcers" and opposing players fear.

I just didn't get the sense that The Bengals were in control at any point during this game.  If Baltimore had scored a TD instead of fumbling at the goal line they probably would have won, or maybe we would have ended up in OT.

McPherson missed an extra point, which makes everyone worried that his three misses in the New England game weren't simply weather-related.

Yeah, my take too and you could see they were "on par" with Baltimore. Baltimore's offense was doing a lot of damage and their defense is tough.

The 3 O-Line being out really hurts. Baltimore does everything right on defense with the 2 deep safeties taking away big plays. Kind of how the Bengals have been played all year, but they do it really well. I don't know a lot about Buffalo, I haven't seen them play much, in regards to their defense.

Like last year, it will all depend on how good the offense can be in these playoffs. They were just good enough in spurts last night to win, with a big help from the defense. Buffalo will be a super tough game, no doubt.

I'm sure that it was incredible to be at the stadium for that defensive touchdown.  No doubt strangers were kissing strangers.

I think a lot of kids watching at home were witness their parents and other adults going nuts and they'll always remember that.  A lot of next-generation Bengals fans are being created.

Yeah, I'm happy for the Bengals win. Twice as excited that the Ravens are out in such a heartbreaking fashion. Pretty or not, the Bengals got it done.

Nobody besides people in Baltimore is ever going to like the Ravens

The Bengals' official website is home to some gems, like the weekly practice photo gallery:

perine.png

The Chase touchdown that was called back probably wasn't a "catch", but it nevertheless was an incredible feat of athleticism.  Listen to the replay and you hear the oxygen sucked out of Buffalo's crowd.

The Bengals were in command of this game in a way that they weren't during either prior game against Baltimore.  We were really lucky to get past them.  Baltimore had a lot of scary players and I didn't sense that from The Bills on either side of the ball.

Obviously the Bengals running game was completely impressive.  There was one run in the fourth quarter where the announcers were talking about the Dallas-SF game while Mixon toughed though 10 yards of Bills.  Like 5-6 guys couldn't bring him down.  It's like, hey announcers, maybe talk about what's actually going on instead of speculating about a game that hadn't kicked off yet.

Bengals looked great yesterday!  Bills didn't even show up, and didn't last week though they managed a win.

I was hoping the Bills were going to make some 2H adjustments but it never happened. I'd much rather get beat by the Bengals vs Chiefs, next week is going to be a good game.

The Bills secondary was beat up and far from full strength. They lost their key pass rusher for the year. They were severely hampered on D and had not faced a team that could challenge their D like this all season. Burrow exposed them in the regular season contest that was canceled. The big difference with the Bills vs Bengals is the Bills invested in a lot of proven veterans but they were older and more susceptible to injury whereas the Bengals had a lot of younger talent that needed to develop better so they could plug and play a lot easier when people got injured (and also Joe Burrow is better than Josh Allen)

A great game. And another special season that came up short.

Mahomes was in a ton of pain throughout the whole game.  I can't believe he dared to scramble on that drive.  That scramble and the bad penalty ended up winning the game.

Two weeks until the Superbowl seems like a lot of time to recover but I find it hard to believe that he didn't seriously aggravate the injury tonight, so he might be worse off.

Meanwhile, the Bengals O-line really struggled all night.  Burrow kept getting hit.

We here in Cleveland feel your pain.  Yesterday's game reminded me of "The Drive" with John Elway scrambling on a bad foot late in the game and leading the Broncos to a win. That game still bugs me.

The O-line was getting beat. Special Teams giving up 25 yards on the punt return to set up the Mahomes scramble. (Mahomes could not through downfield well late in the game)

Also, I was commenting how calling the time out on the 2nd and 8 could come back to bite them. I would have ran a quick play (even if it took 10 more seconds off the clock) and see where it left things. If you can convert you still have 2 Time outs left to try and get a last second field goal. If KC got the ball back, they would have much less time to deal with.

This after KC took a risk in punting to the Bengals.  It's aggravating that that risky strategy actually worked.  It showed that KC was confident that they would keep the Bengals from moving the ball.

All that said, The Bengals came up with some huge plays at clutch moments.  It's not like the ball didn't bounce their way quite a number of times.  A few of the Chase/Higgens catches were incredible.

The Bengals did fail to capitalize on the bizarre Mahomes fumble.

Going 3 and out after the Mahomes fumble was key. There were a few chances for CIN to really take momentum but they just couldn't capitalize.

They scored a TD after the Mahomes fumble. That was the 4th and 6 pass to Chase I thought?

Former NFL star Chad Johnson says he saved money by living inside Cincinnati Bengals stadium for two years

By Ben Church, CNN

Updated 1:57 PM EST, Fri February 24, 2023

After signing his first contract as a rookie for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2001, you might have forgiven Chad ‘Ochocinco’ Johnson for thinking he’d made it.

But while other NFL newcomers splashed out on big houses and fast cars, the wide receiver was more focused on living frugally and developing his game.

Johnson, who enjoyed 11 seasons in the NFL, says that instead of lavishing money on a new house, he spent the first two years of his career living inside the Bengals stadium.

I'm surprised Chad has any money left after paying all of his child support.

The Bengals looked horrible today. The offense was a complete mess. No need to panic as they tend to always start off slow but yikes this may be the worst I’ve seen them under burrow. The offense looked very flat and vanilla, the defense seemed to relax once it was clear the offense was not happening today. Baltimore next week at home we shall see.

Here is a view of The Bengals prepping for their Monday Night clash with The Rams:

A police cruiser sped up the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge ramp the moment I brandished my iPhone, so this is my only photo.  They didn't say anything but made it apparent that I'd be pressing my luck if I continued to take photos or even just watch the practice.

Lol what? People watch and take pictures of practice from the bridge all the time. No one cares.

Is this the Bengals only practice facility?  Or do they have one in the burbs somewhere?

This is the only one, what’s not in this picture in the enclosed “bubble” facility they just built. They do plan on building a big new facility at some point in the future which will be downtown as well.

I am outspoken (perhaps the only poster) advocating for the Browns to move from Berea OH to downtown Cleveland.  This is proof that it can be done!

I actually think the practice facility is an enormous waste of prime real estate. I wish the Bengals would move their practice facility to the burbs and allow this to be developed.

I could see this argument, and certainly the same one exists in Cleveland.   But in Cleveland it's been a sea of parking lots and vacant land, so a football facility would an upgrade.   There's also the argument for keeping 100% of the payroll tax in the city since we are paying into the facility more than the burbs.

Maybe we should actually finish the banks first before complaining about prime real estate being wasted by the Bengals practice fields.  Between the banks and all the surface lots downtown there is no shortage of developable land.   If the Bengals did move this it would likely just sit as a parking lot for decades.

Paul Brown Stadium was originally planned to be where the practice fields are now.  The city, led by then-mayor Roxanne Qualls, pushed for it to be built where it was built in order to shrink the size of the future Banks development.  That move has proven prudent since here we are 23 years after Paul Brown opened and The Banks is still far from finished.  Imagine another 400-foot strip between Elm and Plum St. - two more gaping craters.

The Bengals beat The 49ers in San Fran yesterday 31-17. Unlike the other 2 San Fran losses against Minnesota and Cleveland which were close and kinda odd The Bengals pretty much dominated them, Burrow looks like Joe Montana again and the team looks greattt! Next up National TV at home on NBC Sunday Night Football vs. The Bills it’s gonna be crazyyyy in the city.

They are going to roll Buffalo. Buffalo his missing their all Pro DB, has an injured safety and the rest of the D backfield is pedestrian at best. Von Miller is still coming back from his injury so the pass rush is not there, Matt Milano is out for the year who is their all pro at linebacker, and I think they are missing another key component on D. I am expecting the same as last winter for the Bengals this weekend. Even if Allen has a good day, the Bengals D is far better than the Bills D and I cant see them keeping up with the Bengals in a shootout.

16.5 million people watched The Bengals' backup quarterback defeat Jacksonville in overtime on Monday Night Football.

Meanwhile YouTube was scolding me for using an ad blocker for trying to watch the Coshocton County Fair Tuff Truck race. Guess what I ended up seeing on the rabbit ears instead.
