Henry meets with Goodell

Commissioner to announce decision on suspension within 10 days

BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

April 3, 2007

Chris Henry had his day in court this afternoon with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and came away feeling good about the experience.  “It went pretty good, to have the chance to meet the commissioner face to face,” Henry told The Enquirer of the meeting, a precursor to likely discipline for the wide receiver’s repeated legal brushes as an NFL player.

“I just wanted to explain my situation to the commissioner and move on. I told him I was learning from my mistakes and how to handle myself in a better manner.”  The wide perception is Goodell would suspend Henry for eight games to one whole season.  Goodell said last week at the NFL annual meeting in Phoenix that he would announce his decision within 10 days of the meeting.

Bengals' Henry out for 8 games

NFL suspends wide receiver for four arrests in six months

BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

The Bengals will be without Chris Henry for the first eight games of the 2007 season.  NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday that he suspended the Bengals wide receiver without pay for the first half of the season.  Henry was arrested four times between December 2005 and June 2006.  Nine Bengals players were arrested in calendar year 2006.  Goodell suspended Henry, who turns 24 next month, for two games last season for his repeated off-field problems.

Henry's suspension is without pay. He is scheduled to earn $435,000 in the third season of his five-year rookie contract signed in 2005. NFL players are paid in 17 weekly game checks.  Each of his checks would be worth $25,588, for a total loss of $204,706.

Bengals sign Myers, Johnson

BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

April 20, 2007

CINCINNATI - The Bengals bolstered their 30th-ranked defense this morning when they announced the signings of two players who figure to play a lot of snaps in 2007.  Defensive tackle Michael Myers, who started 16 games for Denver in 2006, signed a two-year contract with Cincinnati.  He should add experience and run-stopping ability to the rotation to tackle, teaming with projected starters Sam Adams and John Thornton and promising second-year player Domata Peko.

The Bengals also announced a one-year deal with steady linebacker Landon Johnson.  It is believed to be the $850,000 tender Johnson received as a restricted free agent from the Bengals.  He is expected to be the team’s starting weak-side linebacker, lining up away from the tight end.

Bengals release Adams

BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

May 14, 2007

CINCINNATI - The Bengals released defensive lineman Sam Adams, the team announced today.  Adams is entering his 14th season.  He joined the team last season as an unrestricted free agent.  He started 16 games, had 25 tackles and two sacks.  “Releasing Sam is a very difficult decision,” said Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis in a statement, “but the timing is such that it provides Sam the opportunity to obtain a roster spot with another team. Sam has had an outstanding NFL career, and we wish him and his family the very best.”

Bengals statement

June 19, 2007

Posted: 12:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the lower court’s summary judgment, thereby ending Hamilton County’s antitrust lawsuit against the National Football League and the Bengals.  The Bengals were gratified by the ruling — a complete vindication for the NFL and the Bengals.  In the face of the allegations made, the Bengals were delighted that the Court found the Bengals acted properly throughout.

Mike Brown, Bengals president, added: “The final chapter has been written on the lawsuit over the stadiums, and as a community, we can now turn toward solving today’s challenges.”

How do you guys in Cincy look at all of the players who get arrested? I feel that the police are actually looking out (in a bad way) for these guys to arrest them again.

I think it sucks that they are put under a microscope ...

However, don't give the cops any reason to arrest yo' ass and you'll be fine.

From the wise words of Chris Rock ...

Marvin needs to ban every player from even patronizing any business, bar, or comedy club in KY.  Just stay on the right side of the river, use COMMON SENSE, and let all this go away!

Well if the NFL is going to continue sticking it to everyone, then they better not stop at Michael Vick.  If he's not out for the whole season as well then I'll be ticked!

NFL rejects reinstating Thurman

Linebacker out for season

BY KEVIN GOHEEN | CINCINNATI POST

July 26, 2007

GEORGETOWN, Ky. - Odell Thurman will not be returning to the Bengals this season.  The NFL announced this morning that it has denied the linebacker's application for reinstatement into the league.  Thurman was suspended all of last season for violating the league's substance abuse policy.  Thurman must sit out the entire 2007 season and will be eligible to seek reinstatement again after the season is complete.

The Bengals declined to comment directly on the matter other than to acknowledge the league's decision.

I guess he'll probably be waived.  He could have been a very good linebacker.

Anybody have any prediction for this season?

I'd like to say they have a better shot at 10 or 11 wins because their schedule is a little easier.  Then again, it's hard to know how good any of the other teams are until they play.

What I want to see this year is some damn tackling by the secondary.  If the Bengals could just tackle better they probably would have had an extra win or two the last few years.

I say we suit Mallory up.    He has that Receiver looking physique.  Maybe he can put on a show trying to catch a ball.    :wink2:

One ohio team down,

one to go!

(yes, I know its preseason, I'm a lions fan, give me a break....)

Yes, it's preseason thank god!!

It's official...Kenny Irons is out for the entire season with the dreaded torn ACL.

That sucks about Irons.  And since Perry is good for about 20 snaps a year, we should be looking for some running backs.  (Watson never impressed me much.)

I saw a lot of stuff I didn't like last night, namely the same lame-ass tackling and people in the secondary who didn't know where they were supposed to be half of the time.  Hopefully this will improve.

The offense looked awesome.

It's funny...Defense is the strong point of the Bengals in my Madden NFL Franchise.

I've got three talented CB's with overall ratings of 99; combine that with my linebacking core at 98, 99 & 88; then you've got the four down lineman...94, 99, 99 & 84.  Oh and the FS and SS are a cool 96 & 98 respectively.

Judge calls NFL 'hypocrites'

BY SHARON COOLIDGE | CINCINNATI ENQUIRER

August 21, 2007

CINCINNATI - A judge told suspended Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman today that the NFL was wrong to suspend him for the season after Thurman was convicted of drunken driving.  Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge John Burlew called NFL officials “hypocrites” for promoting alcohol consumption during games but punishing players for drinking.

This case upsets me more than anything else, primarily ...with the National Football League,” Burlew said.  “The allegations are that you had a legal substance – alcohol -- in your body, a substance which they advertise from and get money from, millions of dollars a year from.”

  • 2 weeks later...

Just had to keep it at the top of the first page!

Anyway, went to the game last night and didn't really see anything that is going to help us this year!

Sucked no Carson, Peyton, or anyone good, but thats ok because we are ready to rock come next Mon night!

The highlight of my night was my inaugural visit to Cadillac Ranch.          Hoppin little establishment!        Very impressed!

I'm not upset with any of the cuts they made to get down to 53.  I'm glad they dumped Johnson at QB...he's awful.

I would have liked to see T.J. Wright make the team, but only because he's a former Bobcat.

What happened to Aaron Elling is horrible.  Imagine getting the opportunity to market yourself to the other teams in the league and then getting hurt on your very first play.

Bengals' opening on 'Monday Night Football' gives region a chance to shine before the nation

BY DUSTIN DOW | [email protected]

Five 80,000-pound television trucks rolled into the Paul Brown Stadium loading docks last week, along with the cables, cameras and crew that will show off Cincinnati to the rest of the country tonight, when the Bengals open their season against the Baltimore Ravens in prime time.  "Monday Night Football," and the nationwide TV exposure it brings, begins its 2007 season tonight in Cincinnati.  Figure on about 12 million people tuning in.

THIS IS IT BEOTCHES!!!

I seen people headed down to the square to watch on the BIG SCREEN.

They aren't showing the city AT ALL!  They just keep showing that aerial shot of the stadium.  They had one half-ass shot of FS and one good skyline shot.  Quit showing us your crappy graphics with the MNF mantra and show us some damn city shots.  How about all the people down at FS right now watching the game.

^ I was noticing that too. Hope they clear that up by the next MNF game.

Vantages taken from an aerial blimp will be used in the third quarter. The Duke Energy Center "CINCINNATI" lights will glow a Bengals orange color.

Well our offense looks over-matched and our special teams just blow!

I've said it before...and I'll say it again.  RUDI SUCKS!!!  He isn't quick enough to take it outside...he's not big/strong enough to pound defenses...and he sure as heck can't pop open a huge run.  Sounds like a mediocre back to me; which means he better NEVER cough up the football.  Trade Rudi please.

WHO DEY!!!

Holy crap...what a roller coaster ride.  I still stand by my Rudi comments though.

^ I was noticing that too. Hope they clear that up by the next MNF game.

Ravens' 'D' hardly intimidates Bengals

BY MARK CURNUTTE | THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER

The Bengals are one of the few NFL teams that don't wilt under Baltimore's defensive intimidation.  Maybe it's because Bengals coach Marvin Lewis was the Ravens coordinator who built the foundation.  The focus is the battle between Cincinnati's offense and Baltimore's defense.  But the Ravens' offense will want to play ball control, having led the NFL in possession time last season at 32:49.  Both teams like to turn takeaways into points. The Bengals are a surprising favorite - thanks to the home field - but will have to play almost an error-free game to win.

Fantastic game.  I suffered several heart attacks, but it was worth it.

Plus my brother-in-law was shown on TV, which was cool.

Cincinnati ranked fifth-best for tailgating

All of those black-and-orange-painted vehicles have apparently made an impression on the folks who rank the best cities for tailgating at NFL games.  A ranking produced by TV system manufacturer KVH Industries, DirectTV and a team of tailgating experts ranked Cincinnati fifth of 32 cities for its pre-game and post-game partying.  The criteria included the tailgating environment, parking lot sizes and accessibility, the purchase of accessories like in-car live TVs, and fan enthusiasm, according to a news release.

Three evaluators visited every city with an NFL team, as well as Los Angeles, which hopes to soon acquire a team.  Baltimore was ranked No. 1, followed by Denver, Houston, San Diego and Cincinnati.  Indianapolis was 16th; Pittsburgh tied for 18th with Boston and New York; and Cleveland was 22nd.

2-0 and ready for the showdown with Seattle. ;-)

who dey

That has to rank up there with the worst defensive performance in team history, especially considering the offense they were playing.  How bad was Baltimore's offense?  We'll see what they're made of in Seattle I guess.

GO BENGALS!!

wow... what a shocking result... kinda reminds me of that high-scoring Bengals-Browns shootout from a couple years ago.

That is the worst defensive performance I have seen in quite a long time.  Why do the Bengals have a knack for making shitty opposing quarterbacks look like the second coming of Joe Fucking Montana?

I thought Marvin Lewis was a defensive guru?  Why can't he seem to build a decent defense to complement the explosive offense?

2-0 and ready for the showdown with Seattle. ;-)

I wouldn't be surprised if the Bengals players were also looking past the Browns. If you haven't been paying attention to the Browns in the off-season, they acquired a lot of talent to beef up the offensive line, and it showed today. As you already know, we also acquired Jamal Lewis along with other improvements.

But I won't bore you Bengals fans with those. If you want to read more, check out the Browns thread here.
