I thought Marvin Lewis was a defensive guru?  Why can't he seem to build a decent defense to complement the explosive offense?

I started thinking about that very same thing right after the game.

When the Bengals get the opponent to turn over the ball a shitload of times, it masks their obvious deficiencies.  When they don't get the turnovers, it's embarrassing.

I'd like to see a defense that can stop people on its own instead of relying on the other team's miscues to get by.

Bengals' defensive collapse might be the worst yet under Lewis

Updated: September 17, 2007, 6:36 PM ET

CINCINNATI -- Where to start with this one?  Maybe with those 51 points by a previously inept offense.  Or the 554 yards by a team that had just traded its starting quarterback.  That average gain of 8.8 yards for every Cleveland Browns play sure grabs the attention.  All those big numbers add up to one big -- and enduring -- problem for the Cincinnati Bengals. Their defense is dragging them down again.

Not even six touchdown passes by Carson Palmer were enough to get a victory Sunday in Cleveland, where the Browns' offense did anything it wanted in a 51-45 victory that showed why the Bengals (1-1) are nothing more than a break-even team.

I will no longer waste 3-4 hours per week on the Bungholes.

Go Bearcats!!!  I knew they lost that game as soon as they gave the ball back to Seattle...there was no way our defense would stop them in that situation.

Dude, you're only 1-2... the Patriots won their first Super Bowl a few years back after starting 0-2.  The Bengals have a lot of potential... they're just prone to boneheaded mistakes and breakdowns.

They have been in everygame.  It not like they are losing by 2 touchdowns.

Playoff caliber teams win those close games...the Bengals, imo, are not a playoff caliber team.

I think the boneheaded mistakes and breakdowns have to come down to coaching.

Why are you fielding punts inside the 10? Why are there so many penalties? Why so many coverage breakdowns?

Why is Dhani Jones, who got cut by several teams, the best tackler on the team when he only showed up Tuesday? It's not just that he went to Michigan...

The coaches don't seem to make players better (and the exceptions are projects like Peko and Jeanty). Is Madieu Williams? Is Caleb Miller? Is Joseph?

I think Marvin is a serviceable coach, but would probably do better on a team with a maturity level that far exceeds that of the Bengals.

It's time for a head coach change, one that can take them to the next level. Marvin has done a great job of rebuilding but he isn't the one to take them all the way.

Give Marvin a break. He can't even get around fast enough to yell in the players faces.

I really don't understand why you draft a Leon Hall.  Sure is has good cover skills, but he is slow for a CB.  You can teach someone how to become a better cover CB...you can't however teach someone how to be faster.

Marvin has had 5 years to fix our defensive problems...I have seen minimal progress at best.

IT'S EARLY!

^Leon Hall ran under a 4.39 in the 40 at the combine. That's plenty fast for a CB. He's right there with other rookie CBs -- Darrell Revis ran .01 seconds faster, Chris Houston (Falcons) was the only appreciably faster guy available. Most guys who play on the outside run from the 4.3s to the 4.5s.

(To compare, Chad Johnson ran a 4.56 at the combine, which is one reason he was here for us to get him. Although he was clocked in workouts much faster, in the 4.3s)

I think Hall can improve his technique, especially coming out of breaks. But I don't know that the Bengals coaching staff will get him there.

Why are you fielding punts inside the 10?

Good question.  Green was doing that shit in the pre-season, yet for some reason he's still out there.

Rando, I had that same sinking, "Bengals" feeling.  The feeling of leaving too much time on the clock and having absolutely no confidence in the Bengals ability to stop anybody.  And then they kick the ball out of bounds and give the Seahawks the ball at the 40.  Unbelievable.

IT'S EARLY!

You get beat by the Clowns and then lose in the last minute to Seattle.  What's going to happen Monday when a REAL team comes to town?

^ The way this team is, they'll probably win.

What's more likely to happen is Randy Moss having 400 yards and 9 touchdowns.

Bengals: Let us cut the poop

BY JANE PRENDERGAST AND MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected] AND [email protected]

Operators of Paul Brown Stadium want permission from the city to kill birds that have been pooping on Bengals fans.  Pigeon droppings have been falling on patrons and into their food and beverages, according to a letter to the city from Eric Brown, managing director of Paul Brown Stadium Ltd., which runs the stadium for Hamilton County, which owns it.  He asked in his letter that stadium employees who are familiar with firearms be allowed to shoot birds a few days prior to an event, adding that company officials believe the shooting to be a “cost-effective way to get this problem under control.”

Man arrested at stadium

An Alabama man was arrested Sunday after he allegedly was caught on a security camera trying to break into offices at Paul Brown Stadium.  Thomas Walker, 23, of Montgomery, Ala., is charged with criminal trespassing.  At 1 a.m., he was caught in the stadium by security, according to Cincinnati police.  It is unclear why Walker wanted to get into the building.

I bet he's employee by the Patriots and he was scouting for camera installation locations!  LOL

Outside the fact we always play good on a primetime game,   I am a little worried!

Maybe we could get a little help from some of the pigeons.

I hate say this, I hope the Pats beat the bengals.  If they lose, they could really put up a fight with the Browns.  I'd rather them beat up on Cinci and play "over confident" against the Browns.

I bet Jim Borgeman reads this forum ...

I bet the same people who complained about the bird poop were the same ones who complained when they heard the birds were going to be shot.

Well at least there is 12 games left in this season. They need to go 9-3 to make the playoff's.

The highlight of this night was "Light Up Cincinnati".  I know I had more fun taken photos of the city than I would have if I went to the game.

boo dey

The Bengals just signed me to play linebacker.  It's a one-year contract at the NFL minimum.  I'll be wearing number 50.

At least they have 2 weeks off to mend.

Just miss a few tackles & you'll fit right in.

'Selfishness' leaves Bengals in disarray

October 2, 2007 12:32 AM

Posted by ESPN.com's Mike Sando from Cincinnati

A dysfunctional Bengals locker room could be near its breaking point.  Standing outside the locker room following the Patriots' dominating victory at Paul Brown Stadium, reporters could hear coach Marvin Lewis ripping into his team.  Lewis used the word "selfishness" in his public comments when asked what the Bengals would see if they looked into a mirror.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well you can kiss the playoff's goodbye. 1-4 right now. They have 3 more guranteed losses  with 2 to play with Pittsburgh and one at Baltimore. We might be looking at a 7-9 season maybe worse.

Was Levi Jones playing in quicksand out there?  I thought he was a first-rounder, but Palmer had no time due to the lack of blindside protection early on.  It set the tone and once they were behind it was over.  It seems the offense and defense never put together good series back-to-back - if they score the defense gives up a quick one and if the defense holds the offense goes three and out.  I can't help but wonder how the defense would be with projected starters, but it seems Lewis will be on the hot seat shortly regardless (at least in the minds of fans and media).  Considering he stuck with Dave Shula until he was something like 15-61 Mike Brown will probably stick with Lewis over the long term though.

What really bugs me is not necessarily losing, but the fact that throughout a game they do so many little things wrong.  They harped on it during the game, but this currently is a very undisciplined team.

It was the fourth straight loss for the Bengals, who have gone 1-7 since being 8-5 last year and holding a one-game lead in the wild-card chase.

Who Do They

pretty much the entire nfl

Good Lord, they suck.  They're not progressing at all.  What did they do during their bye week--smoke weed?

we are not a very good football team

I will no longer waste 3-4 hours per week on the Bungholes.

Yesterday my father came over I had the game on in the background and we left and had lunch.  I didn't worry I bit about missing the bungholes.  I just joined a football pool and picked KC.  They suck and I'm done.  I'll stick with my Buckeyes.

I think a little Who Dey is in order after today's game.

Who Dey

This is good...we really don't want a Top 5 pick in the draft.  I think somewhere in the Top 10 will work out nicely though.  Oh and when the season is over it will be high time to trade Rudi.

I think we played pretty well today other than the Coles TD, which was just pitiful.

Steelers next week...

I wanted the J-E-T-S to win, so that the Browns could stay two games ahead.  Luckily, the Steelers and Ravens lost.  Ok Cinci, win next week!

Technically, the season is not over for us ...

Hanging on by a thread!

Down 2 games to the Steelers with 2 games left against them. 10 games remaining. It's not over.

But considering the second half against the Jets was the first time in a long time I've seen the team battle back from adversity, I'm not betting on it.

And only two games out of the wild card now.  I wouldn't give up yet!  (I did "give up" for a brief period after the Jets took a 23-10 lead.)

Perhaps the Bengals just got all their losses out of the way in the beginning of the season...hahah or maybe we're just a bad/mediocre team

They're certainly not a bad team. They just weren't playing as a team period ... that and the D.
