I can take my medicine. The Browns got manhandled, the Bengals pounded them. CDM, are you serious? The Reds are the only storied professional team in Ohio? I hope that's sarcasm...You really underestimate the Browns and their history. The Bengals wouldn't even exist if Art Modell had not fired Paul Brown. The Browns have the fourth most players enshrined in the Hall of Fame. Jim Brown is arguably the best player ever. Paul Brown changed how football was played. The Browns appeared in six NFL title games in the 50's and won three of them. The Browns won a championship in 1964 and appeared in three more NFL title games in the late sixties. The Browns had 7 playoff appearances in the 80's and  played in three AFC championship games. So, Ohio has two storied professional franchises.

And I'm sure the Portsmouth Spartans can claim something as well.  Well, in Detroit.  Let's not forget about the Mansfield Independents!

I still only count the Reds.

Um... You all can thank the city of Canton for making this discussion possible.

God bless that Lemon Squeezer!

I wonder if other message boards include analysis of the census trends and MSA's in their smack talk?

Then why do names like Jim Brown, Leroy Kelley, etc. line "Cleveland Browns Stadium" in Cleveland, Ohio, you know, on the very ground where they played their entire careers?

I mean that would be like me saying the Cincinnati airport is in Kentucky, oh, wait...

Really?

No, the only thing the city of Cleveland lost was Ozzie Newsome's GM skills.

Well into the 90's the Browns were broadcast on local radio in Cincinnati.  That probably doesn't happen anywhere else.

None of this crap matters. Both teams are pretty damn hard to watch and at the bottom half of most of NFL season stats.

They split the season seriers.

I say we all shut up and wait [  ::)  ] for next year to pick up the browns - bengals smack talk.

I don't know why you Browns fans think that the "Browns Backers" are unique.  There are Bengals bars all over the country, and Canada, England, Croatia, Thailand, Mexico, Japan, Sweden, Ireland....etc.

Check out a list here: http://www.bengals.com/fanzone/bengals-nation.html

When I lived in DC there was a Bengals bar I would go to every Sunday.  It was always standing room only, and they served Skyline Chili and had a DJ to play Bengals music.

I agree with MTS though.  We split the series. Both of the teams are shitty. Let's ressurect this banter next year.

After you get your last word in, of course :)

Just responding to earlier banter that I didn't get a chance to. And it is a Bengals thread...I'm not about to let a Browns fan have the last word

Yeah edale, I've been able to find a Bengals bar everywhere I've ever needed to.  Even in the crappiest of the crappy years, Phebe's in NYC was serving Skyline and packed every Sunday.

That may be true, but no organization has the network or is as large as the Browns Backers.  They are the largest fan affiliated organization in North America.

Looks like Marvin has coached his last game as a Bengal if changes are not made.

Marvin Lewis' contract expired after the Bengals last game on Sunday.  So, of course, this means he's . . . returning and getting a contact extension?!?

Marvin Lewis remains Bengals coach

Updated: January 4, 2011, 7:41 PM ET

ESPN.com news services

CINCINNATI -- The front office won't change significantly.  The Cincinnati Bengals will still be practicing in the cold.  Even with all that, Marvin Lewis decided to stay.

Lewis agreed to an unspecified contract extension on Tuesday that will make him the longest-tenured coach in club history.  Owner Mike Brown agreed to changes in the coaching staff and the roster as part of a deal that left both sides comfortable.

The Bengals are coming off a 4-12 season and have had only two winning records in the past 20 years -- both under Lewis, who is 60-69-1 in eight seasons, including losses in both playoff appearances.

Sources: Carson Palmer wants trade

Updated: January 24, 2011, 10:37 AM ET

By Chris Mortensen, ESPN

Carson Palmer will ask the Cincinnati Bengals to trade him and will contemplate retirement if he does not get his wish, according to several sources.

Palmer, the No. 1 overall pick by the Bengals in 2003, was unavailable for comment as he and his wife, Shaelynn, were awaiting the birth of their third child.

A Bengals spokesman had no comment.  The team has Palmer under contract through 2014.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Mike said no. I wish the NFL could make the Bengals sale the team.

I wish we could trade Mike Brown.  I'd trade for a draft pick, even cash, to the amount of tens of dollars.

Quarterbacks that can throw like CP don't grow on trees.  While I realize he has never fully recovered from that devastating knee injury, I would be hesitant to let him go without a proven backup plan if I was Brown.  Plus, letting everyone know that the two of you have mutually agreed to part ways does nothing but bring down his trade value.

The Bengals wants 43 million to fix the stadium.  I say let them pay for it themselves. Honestly it looks like the Bengals want's out of the city.  If they do leave i don't see another team coming here for a very long time. This has nothing to do with the city but everything to do with the poorly run team.

What do you think the chances of the Bengals actually leaving happening? Things dont look good. Asking for $43 million is ridiculous, it almost seems like he want an excuse to leave and say "hey well LA would give me the money and you wouldn't". Also after a horrible season, the organization seems to not care to make any changes. Maybe he plans on just starting new somewhere else, who knows. If this did happen what would happen to our division?

That story seemed a bit blown out of proportion. Everyone had planned on maintenance costs, now they get to negotiate how much that will be over the next 10 years.

High-definition screens is not maintenance. There was a lot of very vague requests as well - a huge red flag. The deal should have been brokered similar to the Great American Ballpark - which has the team pick up some of the maintenance instead of taxpayers.

This sucks.  Maintenance is a part of the stadium but like Sherman said there's something rotten in Denmark.  MB is a good negotiator so if they are asking for $43MM it's because they want at least $30.  OTOH, if LA is so coveted, why hasn't expansion happened yet?  Just wait a few years and Davis will move the Raiders back.  Debt in California probably makes a new stadium unlikely but I am not up on who is involved.  It could be that a stadium would be privately financed.  Does anybody really want the Bengals...scratch that...does anybody want MB as a presence in their city?

It's a shame, but like Rabbit Hash and others are saying...let them go if it comes to that; it's not worth being held hostage by Mike Brown any longer!

I wonder, though, what would happen to the stadium after that. Talk about a boondoggle!!!

Let them go...there are a few teams that are looking for new deals, I am sure they would jump at the chance to get a deal half as good as mike brown.

Goodbye bengals? I understand LA has the second biggest tv market, but they just dont seem to support there football teams. I dont know why they think it would be any different this time.

EDIT: Now they think they could support 2 teams? I can hear it now, "Both Ohio NFL teams will still be playing in the NFL next season, except for one thing, they will be heading to a sunnier place, LA that is, and the rivalry will stay in tack. This is a great day for the NFL"

http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/nfl/news/story?id=6078709&campaign=rss&source=NFLHeadlines

I have not heard anything about the Bengals being on the short list of teams possibly moving to LA.  I think Jacksonville would be the primary candidate for a move, or as previously stated, the Raiders moving back down.

I thought Jacksonville seemed like a prime candidate since they were having a hard time selling out their stadium for a winning team but last season they stepped up from what I heard. I was just thinking from Mike Browns perspective.

I've heard people from different conversations say that Cincy should just let the Bengals leave. I think letting the Bengals leave would be a devastating blow to the city. Even though the Bengals continue to lose, they attract a lot of people from outside of the immediate area who generate revenue.

And some people say, let the Bengals go and start with a fresh team. If the Bengals go, Cincinnati would probably be without an NFL team for a VERY long time. The Bengals have a dwindling fanbase, and the fanbase would be highly unlikely to attract a new team. Not to mention, there are a lot of "bandwagon" Colt and Steeler fans in the tri-state.

On another note: Given the political climate of the metro area, I'm surprised they have allowed themselves to be jerked around by the Bengals for so long.

It's an issue which really exposes the hypocrisy of the usual suspects.

^What's that supposed to mean?

At least some COAST people were all for the stadium tax, for example.

Because it was a good deal when it was first enacted. But sales did not hold up, the fund went belly-up, and now we are stuck with an owner who is a piece of work.

Ah, I see. I wasn't here when the stadium was built, so I don't know all the details surrounding it.

^Not many of those types were all for it, actually.  I have a few acquaintances that won't buy ANYTHING in Hamilton County because 1/2% of the sales tax goes to the stadiums.  Haven't talked to them in a few years, but they kept their word for quite awhile.

^ sounds like a bunch of really big spenders...

If it isn't the shot, the drive or the decision, it's MSA, it's CSA, or the fact that Cleveland doesn't understand how urbanization made placing an airport across the river was a great and neccessary move that pays off in cold hard cash for the City of Cincinnati.

-MLB commissioner Bowie Kuhn vetoed a trade in '76 that would have brought the Reds pitching great Vida Blue for the '77 season from the same Oakland A's that had been a thorn in Cincinnati's side earlier in the 70's.  His rationale?  Preserving competitive balance in baseball.  What a crock, especially after what the new free agency system did to teams such as the Big Red Machine and the Oakland A's of the '70s.

-The Bengals lost two Super Bowls, yes SUPER BOWLS not AFC title games, to Joe Montana, the second of which was a crushing last minute defeat.

-The MLB strikes of '81 and '94 cost the Reds a chance at a World Series title.  All we got is a couple banners saying, "Baseball's Best record".

-Kenyon Martin broke his leg in 2000 in a meaningless conference tournament.  UC was the prohibitive favorite to win it all that year.

-Ken Griffey was the best player in professional sports when he came home in 2000.  Then the injuries set in.

-The Bengals were poised to make a run at a Super Bowl title in 05 with their star quarterback just getting started.  Then his knee was caved in by a Steeler.  That guy named Palmer never was never heard from again after 2006.

Will Cleveland just quit crying and continue to blindly bankroll their losing teams with the pride of a father at his son's graduation?

The instruction "take one daily" applies on the weekends as well...

^^ Man, that's a great list.

You can also add that the Bearcats should of won the 1992 NCAA Championship. Michigan turn out to be big cheaters(Fab Five; must be a northern thing. Steve Fisher now coaches San Diego St.) and the Bearcats are now officially the runner-ups. Huggins was convinced we would of crushed Duke.

Every true Cincinnatian knew were they were when they heard about Kenyon's broken leg. People still groan about it. I do.

And the Bengals were the best team 2005, until the cheap shot artists that are the Steelers thug their way into the Super Bowl.

Read the entire thread.  There's quite a bit of Cleveland in it.
