Let's be clear on a few things.

My list had nothing to do with national fanbase or sports supremacy in Ohio, which was at the crux of the conversation in previous pages.

I will post what I feel like posting.

Thank you.

Let's stay away from discussing anything "Cleveland" in here.  Let's keep it Bengals! :)

Fine with me.  Let me kick it off then....

I surely hope we send Palmer packing.  He has never been a leader.  He deflects blame constantly.  He's tired of diva WRs but lobbied for Owens.  He's insanely wealthy to the tune of 60+ million but has 0 playoff victories.  Can't read defenses.  Has feet of stone.  He threw 21 picks in '07 when TJ and Chad were in their prime.  Doesn't scan the field, instead stares down receivers then underthrows them, leading to interceptions.  I'd trade him to Buffalo and see how he likes that.

I would bring kitna back. He was the one that got the Bengals winning again.

Bengals rebuild with Dalton and Green

The Cincinnati Bengals have officially ushered in a new era.  With franchise quarterback Carson Palmer and former Pro Bowl receiver Chad Ochocinco aging and disgruntled, the team drafted their replacements in quarterback Andy Dalton and receiver A.J. Green.  Cincinnati's urgency to replace the soon-to-be former faces of the franchise is the strongest sign yet that the Bengals are blowing up the core and starting over.

Technically, Palmer and Ochocinco are still under contract with Cincinnati.  But behind closed doors, the team knows it's likely both veterans played their final game in a Bengals uniform.  Palmer demanded a trade, put his house on the market and says he's willing to retire, while Ochocinco has joined the offseason campaign to get out of Cincinnati.

Mike Brown gets personal with Carson Palmer? Nice job leaving Cincy with nothing from a trade.

Adam Schefter is reporting that QB Bruce Gradkowski will sign a 2-year deal with the Bengals.

Word is that Ochocinco is going to New England.

Hopefully we’ll get something good for Chad.  While I disagree with Mike Brown getting personal over Palmer, I do agree that he shouldn’t be traded.  The Bengals could get a lot more for him if they wait until midseason or even next off season.  As of now all they’d get would be a couple late round draft picks that they’d ultimately use on trouble making underachievers.

ESPN now reports Ochocinco signed a 3-year deal with the Patriots.

EDIT: no word on what the trade value is.

EDIT2: just saw tweet from ESPN's Adam Schefter: "To get WR Chad Ochocinco from Cincinnati, New England surrendered a 5th-round pick in 2012 and a 6th-round pick in 2013."

...Apathy is our best weapon. Stop going to games, stop watching them, stop calling in to Sports Talk shows about them...etc.

^Double edged sword, my man.  Do that and the Bengals might be in LA before you know it in that fancy new $1.2 billion stadium they just approved.  And the NFL would call it justified.

It'd never happen, there are BS parts of Mike Brown's contract with the county that have him getting too sweet a deal through 2027.  I doubt even LA would strike as sweet a deal with him as Hamilton County did.  He gets a free stadium to play in.. there's no maintanance cost, no upgrade cost, no operating costs, nothing.  If he moved, he wouldn't make as much money, and that's all he cares about.

Any move to LA would in all likelihood simply involve a sale of the franchise for a record setting price tag.  If all he cares about is money, then I definitely wouldn't give him the justification.

Except he also appears to like having power over the team playing GM.

^Double edged sword, my man.  Do that and the Bengals might be in LA before you know it in that fancy new $1.2 billion stadium they just approved.  And the NFL would call it justified.

And what's wrong with that? I wish apathy was the card Cincinnati and Ham Co played in the late 90s, when the Bengals threatened to move to NKY. I'd rather see the team go bye-bye, take Brown to court, and start redevelopment of the Banks westward. The Bengals have been nothing but an embarrassment for Cincinnati for several reasons, through the years.

Its hard for us in NEO to relate I guess.  The areas have different passions and I get the impression Cincy is much more of a baseball town.  Regardless. I would not underestimate the economic impact, both directly and indirectly, of NFL football on the City and State.  Personally, I would hate for the bengals to leave the state

Yeah, being from Cleveland I would hate for the Bungals to move. I like having 2 NFL teams in the state, we're one of the smallest (geographically speaking) states with multiple sports teams. 2 NFL, 2 MLB, 1 NBA and then that hockey team that doesn't really count. And then having the Buckeyes in state adds a lot as well.

Mike Brown's Bengals are a tough proposition.  The Cincinnati Bengals go to 2 Super Bowls in the decade just prior to him taking over and then go to 2 playoff games with him running the show in the next 20 years.  I love the Bengals, but Mikey boy is such a loathesome character in many ways that I know nothing will change as long as he is in charge.  I still say many cities would have ridden an owner like him out long ago, but ultimately I don't want them to go.

Pretty much sums it up; Cincinnati loves the Bengals but hates Mike Brown.  Everyone has ideas of how to fix a team; be it a new coach, a new quarterback, improve the defense, etc. but when the problem is very clearly the general manager, who happens to also be the owner – there’s nothing that can be done.  He’s disillusioned into thinking he knows how to run a team, when it’s clear he doesn’t.  The Bengals are the North Korea of the NFL and Mike Brown is our Kim Jong Il.

He learned from his father that the NFL is strictly a business.  Yes, Paul Brown went to 2 Super Bowls, but for the most part, the NFL left him behind.  The Bengals only went to the Superbowl because the favored team either fell apart, or was decimated by injuries.  Both times that team was the Browns.

Mike Brown is an excellent businessman, and tax attorney.  The rest of the NFL owners love the way he does business.  Most of them want to win more than anything and having a team that is willing to be a doormat is easy for them.  They only need him to be competitive and keep attendance up so they get their cut.

We have no way of knowing how Paul Brown would have done the past 20 years - the Bengals went to the playoffs the year before he died.  Mike Brown's record speaks for itself.

The Bengals beat the Chargers and Bills, respectively, to get to the Super Bowl so I do not see how the Browns could have been close to the best team those years.  In both years the Bengals had one of the best PF/PA differentials in the league.  Let's take a look at the records - 1981 especially makes this claim ludicrous.

1981

AFC Central W L T % PF PA

Cincinnati Bengals

12 4 0 .750 421 304

Pittsburgh Steelers

8 8 0 .500 356 297

Houston Oilers

7 9 0 .438 281 355

Cleveland Browns

5 11 0 .313 276 375

1988

AFC Central

Cincinnati Bengals 12 4 0 .750 448 329 119 7.4 -1.3 6.1 7.1 -1.0

Houston Oilers 10 6 0 .625 424 365 59 3.7 -0.7 3.0 5.3 -2.3

Cleveland Browns 10 6 0 .625 304 288 16 1.0 -0.5 0.5 -3.5 4.0

Pittsburgh Steelers 5 11 0 .313 336 421 -85 -5.3 -0.0 -5.3 0.1 -5.5

I said, one team was picked to win the division (1981) and the other was decimated by injuries (1988).

Maybe you are too young to remember, but let me explain it better.  In 1980, the Browns won the division and lost in the playoffs to the Raiders.  They were the darlings of the NFL, the ORIGINAL Kardiac Kids.  They won many close games at the end.  Most of the offensive line went to the Pro Bowl, the QB Brian Sipe was the league MVP.  They were picked the following year to win the division, and then fell apart.  They lost as many close games as they won the year before (sound familiar?)  The Bengals weren't picked high in the division at all.  They started hot, won a few close games early which could have gone either way, then never looked back.

The Browns sucked, there is no denying it.

In 1988, the Browns were coming off 2 consecutive AFC Championship game losses to Broncos.  They were the clear favorite to win the division and possibly the entire thing in 1988.  Kosar was injured in the 2nd or 3rd game and out for 6.  The Browns went through SIX quarterbacks that year due to injuries including Kosar twice and still managed to make the playoffs and only finish 2 games behind the Bengals.  They almost won the playoff game against Houston.

There is no doubt in my mind that the 1988 Browns would have won the division if not for the injuries.  The playoffs are, as always, a crap shoot.  They proved their superiority by coming back in 1989 and making it to the AFC Championship game again.

I remember these seasons quite well - let me be a little more clear.  Without digging into too many stats here are a few reasons the Bengals went to 2 Super Bowls:

1981

Best Record in the AFC (2nd best in the NFL)

2nd best PF/PA differential in the NFL (best in the AFC)

Homefield advantage throughout playoffs

NFL MVP Ken Anderson

1988

Tied for best record in the NFL ( with 2 other teams)

3rd best PF/PA differential in the NFL (best in the AFC)

Home field advantage throughout playoffs

NFL MVP Boomer Esiason

These are not reasons the Bengals went to 2 Super Bowls:

The Bengals only went to the Superbowl because the favored team either fell apart, or was decimated by injuries.  Both times that team was the Browns.

One set of reasons is reality, and the other is opinion and/or wishful thinking.  The Bengals were clearly the best the AFC had to offer each of those years, and they ended up playing two of the closest Super Bowls of the decade.  Unfortunately both games were against the 49er dynasty led by Joe Montana.

Surely in the NFL the teams with the best statistics do not always make it to the championship game.  There is no wishful thinking involved, but you are right it is certainly opinion.  I give you 1981, the Bengals of 1981 were as much a fluke as the Browns of 1980.  One year wonders.  You would have an argument had the Bengals been able to repeat in those years, or had put together numerous consecutive playoff appearances as had the Browns of 85 through 89.

The NFL also had a scheduling formula in the late 80s which rewarded the poorer teams with an easier schedule the following year.  Ironic that the Bengals were better in the years that they benefited from this scheduling.

Those are facts, not wishful thinking.  What happened, happened. Has nothing to do with the poor teams of today.

This is very cynical. It's like saying a used car salesman who can consistently make money by selling patched-up lemons as reliable cars is a "good businessman". He has no intention of making his customers happy. When a sports fan buys a ticket to see the Bengals, they want to see them win. He delivers a faulty product and just doesn't care. That's not a good businessman by any reasonable metric.

Let me try one more time - the Super Bowl years happened because those Bengal teams were the best AFC teams those years.  They were the best statistically, had home field advantage in the playoffs, and fulfilled expectations as the number 1 seeds in the AFC.  That is all there really is to say, and my point is that this had nothing to do with any other team.

Goodbye Carson.

I can't believe Mike Brown made a smart move! Next year's draft could be really huge.

Hopefully these draft picks go well.

Wow. Carson Palmer for Oakland's two first-round draft picks. Patience (waiting for a team to be desperate for a quarterback) pays off.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

So Al Davis really was the brains of that organization.  Weird.

Besides the Hershel Walker deal, I can't remember a team ever trading away more than one 1st rounder for a current player.  NFL teams hoarde 1st rounders like they are gold.

One of the first rounders is conditional, right? So if the Raiders make it to the playoffs, they get a first rounder in 2013. If they don't then it's a second round pick

^ Yes, but I believe the condition is they make it to the AFC title game either this year or next, the pick is upgraded to 1st round.

A Cleveland Browns player, in a losing game, injures a quarterback and ends up sending two first round picks to our divisional rival. Unbelievable.

Great news for the Bengals.  If they draft Trent Richardson and start out the season next year 10-0, maybe they can stop the blackout streak??

That's the amusing part to me...the Bengals are 4-2, showing signs of having young talent with promise, just made a great trade, yet they might not sell out the game.

The "streak" will end at 7 as Pittsburgh is the next home game (Nov. 13th). Had it instead been the Clowns coming to town, it would have been 8.

What game? They are on the road for two weeks as well as have a BYE week.

And one "great" trade, that has no impact on this season, does not make-up for everything else Mike Brown has done wrong.

Exactly.  People that aren’t from Cincy/aren’t Bengals fans just don’t get it sometimes.  I’m a diehard Bengals fan, but I can’t bring myself to give a dime to Mike Brown.  I watch the games streaming online, and listen to the radio because they’re blacked out.  Most people I know now do this, even people that have been season ticket holders in the recent past.  Even Cleveland Brown’s fans (who have some history with hating owners) can’t really understand the dynamic Mike Brown has created in Cincy.  Going 4-2 and making one great trade isn’t going to change 20 years of being a terrible owner/manager.

I’m also not going to be tricked into buying a ticket by the NFL.  “Punishing” fans because the game didn’t sell out is total crap.  I’m glad I can find streams online to watch, for free.
