Marvin Lewis leaving Bengals after this season

Cincinnati-Skyline-Night-5067.jpg

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis and the team will part ways after this season, according to reports.

NFL Network’s Ian Rappoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Lewis and the Bengals agreed he’ll wrap up his 15-year tenure as Bengals head coach when the season ends. The Bengals declined comment through a spokeswoman.

Rappaport said Lewis told him last night that he'd be interested in a potential front-office position with another team. Rappaport also reported that both sides agreed to move on and wanted a fresh start.

....and Marvin is the Bengals coach for life.

I've seen three lines of thought. First is "well who else are you going to get???". The second is, "well that's stupid" while the third and most interesting (conspiracy) theory is keeping Marvin is the next move in a process to move the Bengals to another market. Disenfranchise the fans by doing more of the same, so that when Hamilton county breaches the stadium contract in a year Mike Brown can search for greener pastures and the fan base won't be as rabid when fighting against him.

https://www.cincyjungle.com/2017/12/10/16755860/could-the-bengals-be-leaving-cincinnati-in-the-near-future

I am more of the lines of "who else is a better candidate".  The Bengals were close this year to being a good team at times but they were super disjointed.  Could Marvin had said "Look Mike, you've got to give me complete control of the roster and FA moves.  Only then will I stay..."  If that is what it was, then I think that's a good deal for Cincinnati.

I get the whole no win in playoff, but the way the roster is now, it is fairly close to being a Division contender / wild card team.  If Brown is letting Marvin get straightened out the disjointedness, will see what happens in 2 years.

Also got to think, who would want to coach the Bengals with Brown at the helm, notorious for being a cheapster...

It's such a shame that a coach who has been around 15 years without a single playoff victory is the best we can do in Cincinnati, but that does appear to be the case. I haven't really followed or cared about the Bengals since the Steeler playoff game collapse, so I don't really care what the inept organization does, but it would be nice if they even gave the appearance of caring about success occasionally.

This news item is incredible.  Makes that ESPN reporter look ridiculous -- why risk your journalism career on such a minor scoop?

What happen the 15 years before Lewis?

Yes, let's measure down not measure up. The Bengals also went to 2 Super Bowls in the 1980s. Nowhere else would a coach who can't win in the playoffs and can't beat their main rival (Pittsburgh) be allowed to stay around this long. The Bengals will be lucky to average to 50,000 fans this year.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a steep drop-off in season ticket holders in 2018 and 2019

Not counting the LA teams (both of which are playing in temporary stadiums that are too large and too small respectively) the Bengals are last in total attendance and percentage of capacity filled. I would imagine this trend will continue.

With Hue staying on in Cleveland and a 1-31 record over two seasons I'd like to think the Browns can break through that Bengals threshold next year.

I'm hearing a rumor that one of Marvin Lewis's kids or relatives has had a love child with someone in the Brown family.  If so, this is the greatest local urban legend since the Bob Huggins/Jeff Wyler's Wife affair urban legend.

I know one of the Brown children had a baby with a Russian/Eastern European girl who was teaching tennis at Cincinnati Tennis Club. It was a bit of a scandal at the time, but I think they actually ended up marrying.

Marvin Lewis out as Bengals coach

Coruscant-5.jpg

Marvin Lewis won’t be back as Cincinnati Bengals coach next season. The Bengals and Lewis made the announcement Monday morning.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network and NFL.com reported earlier Monday morning that Lewis has told his staff he won’t be coaching the team next season.

“Marvin Lewis has informed his Bengals staff he’s out as coach, source said. Owner Mike Brown made the decision,” Pelissero wrote on Twitter at 9:59 a.m.

Hugh Jackson era.

Jackson doesn't have a real shot to be head coach, does he?

Probably not. The media and fans of other teams love the joke. The story goes in 2015, Marvin wanted to retire and have Hue Jackson take over as head coach but Mike Brown refused. So either, Mike Brown thought Marvin should still be coaching at that point or felt like he'd rather have Marvin than Hue or just straight up didn't want Hue to be head coach.

^It's like he can't help himself

Yeah there's a reason why no NFL team drafted the guy.  This guy is poster child for a future bankrupt former NFL player, despite earning over $30 million to date.  I remember seeing Pacman's Lambo in the Titans' parking lot around 2006.  It was the most amazing car I had ever seen.  I'm sure it got repo'd before he was signed by The Bengals.

If you look at any of those lists of the wealthiest former NFL players, it's almost all quarterbacks.  Obviously they have much longer careers if they're decent but come on.  If I only played 3 seasons and pocketed the NFL minimum, I would have had no problem buying a small house with cash and putting the rest in stocks.

You do have to wonder what his presence on the field does to offensive players, though. The guy has no qualms about wasting away tens of thousands of dollars if it means he gets a chance to knock someone out. The Steelers seem to have him figured out and bait him into dumb plays, but most teams do seem to avoid him to an extent.

That said, the Bengals have always taken a chance on skilled players with character issues. Mixon is another example. I like it - it reminds me of Huggins at UC in the glory days.

As for money - something that's rare in Cincinnati is seeing any of our local stars out flaunting it. I saw Joey Votto in his Lamborghini once, years ago, but that's about all I can recall. But Votto level salary is on a whole other level that even good NFL players can only dream of.

^I saw Joe Nuxhall driving his conversion van out of GAPB once.

I saw Pacman's Lambo when he played for the Titans.  Their player parking area used to be behind a simple chain link fence right next to the stadium.  This is right when camera phones started and people were lined up ten deep to take photos of this car.  It alternated between copper and purple depending on which angle you were looking.

...and it was repo'd:

Can you point to a single instance where Burfict made a play to win a game? And the greatest players on Earth don't want to knock people out, they want them active for the entire game so they can impose their will and dominate them. Burfict has been a microcosm of the Cincinnati Bengals 2008 - to present, and its gotten the Bengals nothing, and wasted some years in which they had arguably the most talent in the NFL

^I can only think of an instance where Burfict helped cost the Bengals a playoff win.

Bengals reportedly pick head coach

zac-taylor*750xx5184-2922-0-99.jpg

The Cincinnati Bengals have chosen Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks coach Zac Taylor to be their next head coach, according to several media reports.

The team plans to offer the job to Taylor, according to reports by ESPN, NFL Network and several others, but they can’t officially hire Taylor until the Rams are eliminated from the playoffs.

The Bengals interviewed Taylor during the bye week before the Rams’ first playoff game on Saturday against the Dallas Cowboys. They haven’t negotiated with him yet, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported. The Rams’ season could go as late as Feb. 3 if they reach the Super Bowl.

I still won't be shocked when the Bengals announce that Marvin is actually going to return as head coach for another year.

God, that would be awful.

It's quite clear Katie Blackburn is in full control now and is making the changes. The biggest take away is all those empty seats in PBS mattered and forces their hand. The fans wanted to blow it up, the Bengals did that. The fans wanted a young offensive coach, the Bengals did that.

Bengals name new head coach

The Cincinnati Bengals have named Zac Taylor to be the team’s next head coach, replacing Marvin Lewis.

The 35-year-old Taylor, who becomes the NFL’s second-youngest head coach, was quarterbacks coach for the Los Angeles Rams before taking the Bengals top job.

The Bengals made the official announcement on Monday afternoon. Taylor had flown to Cincinnati on Monday morning, a day after the Rams lost in the Super Bowl to the New England Patriots 13-3, to finalize a contract.

The Bengals...ooof.

The Bengals are very bad. That is all.

Well at least they are holding up development on the riverfront and demanding millions for stadium upgrades

I remember the 2 win seasons of the 90s. Those teams would rout this Bengals team. Zach Taylor looked  like a deer in headlights last night in Pittsburgh. I'd be surprised if he lasts more than a couple years as a head coach - he inherited a bad team but he managed to turn it into a candidate for the worst team in the NFL.

The Miami game in December will probably end up being a battle for first overall draft pick. The Bengals will probably tie Miami, but somehow lose the tiebreaker for the top pick.

Certainly something to be said about continuity vis-a-vis Marvin Lewis

Yeah - that was a tough one.

I am one of 34 people I know coming down for the Browns game on a charter bus. The bus company said they have 11 buses booked to Cincinnati for that weekend. All in all, ticket/bus/drink wristband I'm paying $120 for the trip.

It was completely crazy.  I pulled up to a bar in the last minute of the game and a fight broke out between the bartender and a patron.

I was at that game.  It sucked.
