Posted December 5, 200519 yr very inspiring -- a bunch of thirty-somethings get together to fund projects to help the city and urban agenda: link: http://www.clevelandcolectivo.org/
December 5, 200519 yr I'm so glad you posted about this, mrnyc. Some of my friends here at the Levin College are founding members, and the group in general is just a beautiful idea. They're already getting lots of applications for projects.
December 5, 200519 yr well i'd like to take credit for finding out about it, but thank the fantastic (if erractically updated) hotel bruce blog! your friends may be interested in this blogworld publicity? -- it's prob just the kind of publicity they would want! link: http://www.hotelbruce.com/01_02/bruceblog.php
December 5, 200519 yr The Colectivo contacted Hotel Bruce about it themselves. This is the kind of project we're seeing more and more of in Cleveland these days -- citizens taking the initiative to improve their city in creative new ways. It makes me feel very optimistic about Cleveland's future.
December 5, 200519 yr like that jerk blinker making people walk across the Detroit-Superior bridge in an attempt to kill off all the ex-pats who want to move home Oh, blinker don't read the above comment, it is my other friend named blinker

December 6, 200519 yr I feel like everyone I know is part of the Colectivo! Not that that's a bad thing! I'm planning on hitting them up for about half of January's rent and utilities... PS: anyone hip to the Ohio City community owned coffee house? The community is apparently working to re-open a recently vacated Metro Joe's cafe with a sort of co-op cafe. The community-built thing is so big in this town...I love it!
December 6, 200519 yr Aw geez, haven't the poor guy's chops been busted enough? Oh, it's OK... And by the way, all you haters should know, we're considering indoor options for the CPA portion of the tour! ;) Now back to the Colectivo...
December 7, 200519 yr yup...about two weeks ago! there are now vacancies there and across the street where the old laundromat used to be (next to the sushi shop).
December 8, 200519 yr Apparently Le Oui Oui is planning to expand into the old laundromat space in January. That's what the owner recently told the coffee collective organizers.
December 8, 200519 yr OK, I am a dumbass What is up with the word Colectivo, rather than Collective? i think they used it as a clever marketing hook and because they know cleveland is f'ing cool and not like every generic place else !!!
March 24, 200619 yr I heard that the Colectivo has made some funds available for some small projects around town. They are going to have some sort of opening party in the next few months. Sounds like a great idea--I think I''ll join.
March 24, 200619 yr [qoute]OK, I am a dumbass What is up with the word Colectivo, rather than Collective?[/qoute] LOL I found that kind of funny, since in many South American countries, like Argentina, the world "collectivo" means a city bus (i.e. el Collectivo de Cleveland = the Cleveland Bus).
October 24, 200618 yr Do you have an idea that you think would make a difference in Cleveland? We’d like to help you make it happen. The Cleveland Colectivo is seeking projects to support. The Colectivo is a group of friends, neighborhoods and colleagues. We pool our funds and share our energy to invest it back into projects that we see as worthwhile and exciting in Cleveland. Each member contributes to the Colectivo quarterly and together we choose projects to support. Every month we gather to discuss ideas, learn about area initiatives and organizations, network with a growing circle of members, and continue building the Colectivo. So now we are again looking for innovative ideas in which to invest. That’s where you come in! If you have a project that you would like to make a reality, take the first step—visit www.clevelandcolectivo.org and send us your answers to these three simple questions. Or send your answers to . 1) What is your proposal? 2) How will this project strengthen our community? 3) What makes your project unique, and why are you the right person to do this? We welcome individuals, new businesses, and community projects to participate. Grant amounts will range between $500 and $5,000, based on the number of projects selected. The deadline for submissions is January 15, 2007. Please keep your response to one page. Bring your idea to life, and let us help!
October 25, 200618 yr This is one of the more innovative things I've heard of. It sounds like one of those micro-enterprise or micro-loan concepts that have been surfacing in the Third World, but this is'nt just for buisnessess, but also for non-profit projects too, apparenlty. Pretty neat idea! Do they have a list of grants or projects they are supporting. I missed that on their website.
October 25, 200618 yr what is their ownership interest? do they actually take a stake in their grant projects or just "give" $1000 to help things get going?
October 25, 200618 yr ^no stake. Its pretty informal. Its really just a group of pro-Clevelanders who want to give out cash to help someone do something good for Cleveland. I know that the new mural on the shoreway wall at W.25th was funded by the Colectivo.
October 25, 200618 yr That's nice to have that approach to balance out the larger foundations. Both are great and vital, but some of the requirements and restrictions of the established foundations make things difficult for individuals who simply do things as a "labor of love". clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
October 26, 200618 yr We are, what is known as, a 'giving circle.' We put together our own money and 'talent' with the sole purpose of giving back to the city (Cleveland). Unlike many of the other foundations, including Neighborhood Connections, neighborhood groups do not have to have a 501©3 status. Nor do they have to have a non-profit or other agency as their fiscal agent. Last year was our first round. The four groups selected for our first round of funding are: • The Building Bridges Mural Program: awarded $3,000 for artist Katherine Chilcote’s effort to create a youth internship program in partnership with Doug Horner at St. Paul’s Community Church that will result in a mural installation at the intersection of West 25th and Detroit Avenue. • The Westside Refugee Family Center: awarded $2,500 to implement a six-month pilot “Mommy and Me” program, enhancing offerings already available to a growing number of refugee families on Cleveland’s near west side. • City Wheels: awarded $1,000 for grant-writing assistance to support this innovative Northeast Ohio car sharing service designed to provide a creative cooperative transportation alternative to car ownership. • The Tremont Urban Learning Garden: awarded $750 for materials to this project in which Lucky's Coffee Shop/Sweet Mosaic Bakery will work with neighborhood youth to build a garden in a vacant lot adjacent to the coffee shop and use the locally-grown produce in food and baked goods sold at the bakery. Learn more. We have taken a stake in the projects we funded. Many of our members went to Lucky's this past summer to help install parts of the learning garden. A few weeks ago, our members were on hand to help install the Building Bridges Mural. We have also helped out a couple of the groups that did not get funding.
November 16, 200618 yr AP contacted the group to contribute to a story about giving, or social circles. At least two news sites picked it up. The Palm Beach Post(http://www.palmbeachpost.com/business/content/shared-gen/ap/Personal_Finance/On_the_Money.html), and the Seattle P.I., (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/1315AP_On_the_Money.html). December 28, 200618 yr You have two weeks to submit your grant proposal (Deadline: January 15) http://www.clevelandcolectivo.org/
January 25, 200718 yr Cleveland Colectivo Member and Friend, It is our pleasure and honor to personally invite you to "Change for Change," the Cleveland Colectivo's very first fund-raising event. The Cleveland Colectivo is a "giving circle" that was founded in 2005 and is now in its second year of funding innovative community projects. The focus of the event is an auction. Artists from around the region are creating and donating what we are calling "Social Change Banks," an idea that builds upon the simple "change bank" that many of us grew up with: saving our pennies, nickels and dimes for a year before donating them to an organization in the community. A social change bank links the act of an individual saving money to the mission of the Colectivo: Clevelanders coming together to strengthen our community through collective investments that identify and nurture innovative projects. Ultimately, each social change bank will be auctioned off and 100% of funds raised will go directly to the 2007 grantees of the Cleveland Colectivo. We feel your presence at this event is very important because of your dedication to community issues. This event will be a fantastic opportunity to both meet new people and reacquaint yourself with familiar faces who believe in Cleveland and its surrounding communities. Won't you join us? Food and beverages will be provided. In addition to the auction funds, 10% from the sales of all regular gallery items will go to the Colectivo and its 2007 grantees! The event will take place on Saturday, February 10th from 7-10 pm at the Local Girl Gallery at 16106 Detroit Ave . An invitation is attached. For complete information on the Cleveland Colectivo, visit www.clevelandcolectivo.org. Thank you for your time and we look forward to seeing you on February 10 th! Sincerely, The Cleveland Colectivo
February 10, 200718 yr Just a reminder for our event tomorrow. There will be over 25 local artist presenting works for the auction - at least one of of them from an Urban Ohio member. Food and drink provided. Stop by the bar, I'll be tending along with UO member, the guv. See you tomorrow
May 3, 200718 yr And it's official. The results from our second round: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Lee Chilcote 216/406-3750 or SMALL GRANTS FOR BIG IDEAS: TWO YEAR OLD GIVING CIRCLE AWARDS MONEY TO SIX INNOVATIVE PROJECTS IN 2007 The Cleveland Colectivo, a two-year-old Cleveland-based “giving circle” whose members make collective contributions to innovative projects in Cleveland, has selected six projects for funding in 2007. Reflecting the group’s determination to transform Cleveland, these projects, selected from more than 150 applications, focus on creativity, social justice, economic development, environmental sustainability, youth and alternative media. In total, the Colectivo gave away $13,500 in 2007 (nearly twice as much as the group gave away in 2006). “The Cleveland Colectivo is a part of a national trend – giving circles are growing across the country,” said Walter Wright, one of the group’s founding members. “We believe that philanthropy is something that anyone can participate in, and we want to celebrate the grassroots projects happening in Cleveland.” The Colectivo provided grants to six different projects in 2007: • Zygote Press, a print-making collaborative, was awarded $2,000 for the Artzreach Program. The funds will help purchase materials and pay teacher stipends for an initiative to provide arts programming to individuals in detention and re-entry programs, in the Broadway neighborhood of Cleveland. Find out more information about Zygote Press at www.zygotepress.com. • ArtHouse, a community arts center in the Brooklyn Centre neighborhood, was awarded $2,000 for the Fresh Stop – Studio Stop program. A first time collaboration between ArtHouse and CityFresh, these groups will host a “Fresh Stop” farmers market two days per month in the ArtHouse parking lot at 3119 Denison Rd. The market will offer locally grown produce at affordable prices. During the farmers market, ArtHouse will offer a free, open-door studio at its facility, allowing the public to take advantage of arts programming and classes. Find out more information about ArtHouse at www.arthouseinc.org, and CityFresh at www.gotthenac.org. • The Nueva Luz Urban Resource Center, a non-profit that focuses on fostering stronger relationships among youth and families of color, was awarded $5,000 for the African American and Latino Male Youth Dialogue program. The funds will be used for four quarterly dialogue sessions, estimated to impact 200 youth and fathers. The goal of the sessions is to create stronger intergenerational relationships, and to help youth change the projected outcomes of their lives. Contact the Nueva Luz Urban Resource Center at 216/651-8236. • The Wendy Park Foundation, a non-profit that promotes and educates Clevelanders about Wendy Park at Whiskey Island, was awarded $2,500 for the WHISTLE Program – a three-week summer boat-building and sailing camp for Cleveland kids. The funds will be used to purchase materials. This innovative program exposes youth to Whiskey Island and the natural environment. Find out more about this group at www.wendyparkfoundation.org. • Meet the Bloggers, a media organization that provides an alternative news source on issues that face Northeast Ohio, was awarded $500 for web hosting, newsletter maintenance, and pod-casting. Meet the Bloggers is known for hosting its interviews in Cleveland neighborhoods, bringing attention to under-reported issues, and for promoting an “open source” approach towards information and news. The Colectivo grant will help this grassroots group to expand its audience. Find out more about Meet the Bloggers at www.meetthebloggers.net. • Parish Hall Cleveland, a music and arts non-profit housed in a former church hall in the Gordon Square Arts District of the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood, was awarded $1,500 towards a Gallery Renovations project. The funds will provide seed funding for the group to construct moveable walls, allowing them expand their programs. The moveable walls will create additional gallery space for art shows and other events. Find out more at www.parishhall.wordpress.com. The Cleveland Colectivo was formed in January of 2005. Unlike traditional foundations, the group has created a giving circle model with no formal executive director, board of trustees or overhead – except for occasional purchases of pizza and drinks. Decisions are made by consensus at monthly meetings and membership is open. Voting members contribute at least $100 per quarter. For more information about the Cleveland Colectivo, visit www.clevelandcolectivo.org. The Cleveland Colectivo mission statement is: “Clevelanders coming together to strengthen our community through collective investments that identify and nurture innovative projects.” # # #

At this event, we will be auctioning off artist-created purses and wallets to raise money for this year's grantees. Are you or is someone you know artistically inclined? If so, I hope you'll consider (or consider letting that someone know about) making a piece for the auction! Our theme is "change for change," and we are seeking submissions of purses and wallets. Use your imagination! Pieces can be functional or not-so-functional. So far, we have a variety of pieces committed: photographs, blown glass and fabric, to name a few. The sky is the limit! If you or someone you know is interested in creating a piece, please let me know! There is plenty of room for a variety of pieces, and each one will help raise funds for our grantees this year. Email me at with any questions or if you would like to commit to making a piece. Thank you for all of the great work you do making this such an incredible group! I'm looking forward to what will surely be a successful evening. Best, Jason
