December 13, 201014 yr Here's a nice feel good story about Judson Manor in University Circle: Young resident musicians bring cultural spark to assisted-living facility in Cleveland Published: Monday, November 29, 2010, 6:00 AM Peter Zicari, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Two Cleveland Institute of Music graduate students bring a youthful spark to men and women in the sunset of their lives. Caitlin Lynch, a violist, and Mary Vanhoozer, a pianist, live in Judson Manor, an independent and assisted-living facility for the elderly in University Circle. The two practice in the ballroom and lobby, hang out with their neighbors and attend happy hour and morning coffee klatches. Clara Catliota, 89, embraced Lynch after the concert. They have become fast friends. "They have put joy into our lives," Catliota said. "It is the best thing that has happened to us. It is wonderful." http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/11/young_resident_musicians_bring.html
December 13, 201014 yr BIG NEWS! This is another step forward for linking University Circle. University Circle Inc. aims to support walking tour, maintenance through $5.5 million fundraising campaign Published: Thursday, December 02, 2010, 7:36 PM Michelle Jarboe, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A walking tour of the people, places and past of University Circle is part of a new campaign to attract money and visitors to the growing neighborhood. CircleWalk, a path lined with signs and interactive features, could lead passersby into Cleveland museums, to the front doors of hospitals and up the steps of educational institutions. Nonprofit group University Circle Inc. expects to choose a planning and design team early next year for the project, an estimated $2 million investment. CircleWalk, with more elaborate signs and potential video and audio features, will be a longer-term project. A very preliminary sketch of the tour shows a meandering path that wraps around the Case Western Reserve University campus, museums and neighborhoods. The actual layout for the tour has not been determined, but it's likely to be a self-guided path of 1 to 2 miles. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/12/university_circle_inc_aims_to.html

January 13, 201114 yr New FREE newspaper in the University Circle and surrounding neighborhoods area. I've already read all three copies: Finding their voice: A new community newspaper becomes the voice of the unheard Lee Chilcote Thursday, January 13, 2011 Diversity, Philanthropy, Sustainability Josette Compton grew up within walking distance of University Circle's lofty museums, hospitals and private colleges. Yet her own modest, struggling East Cleveland street felt like another country. As a teenager, she fantasized about escaping -- to New York, D.C., anywhere -- to pursue her dream of becoming a journalist. "I've always wanted to be a writer," says Compton. "I even started my own newspaper, The Children's Enquirer, when I was 10 because I didn't like what Teen Beat was saying about my favorite artists. My mom, my cousins and I sold it for fifty cents." After attending Regina High School and graduating from Howard University in Washington D.C., Compton moved to New York, eventually fulfilling her dream of becoming a writer. She landed a plum job with Entertainment Weekly, interviewing and writing about music's top performers like Salt-N-Pepa and the Wu-Tang Clan. A year later she was hired as editor of the Greater University Circle Neighborhood Voice, a free community publication with a social mission. The hyper-local monthly newspaper covers University Circle and the surrounding neighborhoods. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/features/neighborhoodvoice011311.aspx

February 11, 201114 yr This is technically "construction," but FYI: Adelbert Road To Be Closed for Water Project Effective Monday, Feb. 14, Adelbert Road will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic just south of Euclid Avenue as part of a major infrastructure project for the area. In addition, the Binary Walkway will reopen to pedestrians on that day. Pedestrians may use the Binary Walkway to access buildings along Adelbert Road that are south of the closure. As a result of the road closure, vehicle traffic from Euclid Avenue will not be able to access Adelbert Road directly. Similarly, vehicles on Adelbert will not be able to access Euclid directly. The construction is expected to last about four weeks. http://blog.case.edu/case-news/2011/02/11/adelbert_road_to_be_closed_for_water_project

This project will enhance the efficiency of air conditioning and other services requiring chilled water. It is expected to result in long-term operational and capital savings for Case Western Reserve University and contribute to the university’s sustainability efforts. Details regarding the timing of this and successive phases will be posted in The Daily as they become available. http://blog.case.edu/case-news/2011/03/01/adelbert_road_reopened_for_vehicular_traffic

June 4, 201114 yr Cleveland Museum of Art acquires a stellar collection of Congolese art from Odette Delenne of Belgium Published: Friday, June 03, 2011, 6:00 PM Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio — One of the world’s greatest available private collections of traditional Congolese sculpture from the 19th and early 20th centuries has been snagged by the Cleveland Museum of Art because a Belgian art lover became convinced her treasures would have the most impact in Cleveland. The museum announced Friday that it has acquired 35 of the best works from the collection amassed by Odette Delenne of Brussels and her late husband, Rene Delenne, from the late 1950s to the late 1970s. She was not interested in seeing the collection subsumed in a large museum in America, where it would have had less visibility than it will in Cleveland. “Her realization was that at the Met [the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York] the collection would be lost,” Petridis said. http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2011/06/cleveland_museum_of_art_acquir_3.html

December 5, 201113 yr ^ Ironically the last two out-of-town visitors I showed University Circle, they both said it reminded them of DC. Now for today: Thousands enjoy CircleFest's atmosphere, activities to kick off winter Published: Sunday, December 04, 2011, 7:46 PM By John Caniglia, The Plain Dealer Today, what residents had was a host of activities from more than a dozen groups, museums and churches. The museums opened for free, with scores of activities for children and adults. Residents strolled the streets in horse-drawn carriages, glided on skates at the Rink at Wade Oval and felt the spray of a sculptor shredding through a tub of ice. Children listened to singing Santas at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and carolers at the Church of the Covenant. Outside the church, Van Parker serenaded residents with the carillon, a musical instrument that consists of tuned, bronzed bells. Chris Ronayne, the president of University Circle Inc., estimated that 15,000 to 20,000 people attended. University Circle Inc. sponsors and coordinates the events, with several corporate partners. "The Circle is the gemstone of Cleveland," Ronayne said. "We want people to know that it's a cultural center. We're coming into our best days." http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/12/thousands_enjoy_circlefests_at.html

January 19, 201213 yr cma included on list of 10 can't miss museums in the country Thursday, January 19, 2012 GotSaga, an interactive site that allows people to share stories, recently featured an article on the 10 best museums in the country. No surprise, The Cleveland Museum of Art was on the list. Also sharing the list are The Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. "The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) is an art museum situated in Wade Park, in the University Circle neighborhood on Cleveland's east side. Internationally renowned for its substantial holdings of Asian and Egyptian art, the museum houses a diverse permanent collection of more than 43,000 works of art from around the world. The Cleveland Museum of Art has remained historically true to the vision of its founders, being the only major American museum keeping general admission free to the public." http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/inthenews/cmacantmissmuseum011912.aspx
January 19, 201213 yr ^While I don’t question the CMA’s status as a must-see museum, I’m dubious about a list which includes the Kentucky Derby Museum and the National Cowboy & Western History Museum among its cultural peers :wtf: http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
January 19, 201213 yr ^Would agree with your post and point....that said CMA is usually in the top of 10 of art museums in the country on most lists I have ever seen (for what those "lists" are worth since a good portion of the evaluation has to be subjective).

Agreed, this is more like a popularity in genre list. I wouldn't go to the KD museum unless work related. Its the "horse racing" (industries) museum for lack of better term.
January 28, 201213 yr Fairly good article written by a Case student: University Circle Earns Top Marks in Beauty By Sage Schaff, Assistant News Edtior CWRU Observer Updated: Friday, January 27, 2012 01:01 The neighborhood of University Circle was founded in 1872, half a century before Cleveland rose to prominence as a major American industrial center. Originally, local wealthy families wanted to pool together money to create and preserve an area with a culture distinct enough to be noted around the world. Nearly 130 years later, it remains the cultural nucleus of a city that has risen and fallen and now badly needs a revival. Earlier this month, Forbes Magazine recognized University Circle as one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the country in an article highlighting about a dozen small districts. "University Circle gives a feel of being in a city and not being in a city at the same time," said Cleveland Institute of Art professor Gary Sampson, referring to the area's relaxed pace juxtaposed with the attractions of a major city. Sampson has lived and worked here for 14 years. His interest in architecture and urban planning sparked his interest in the history of University Circle. "The architecture is very diverse here, with the Beaux-arts style influencing places like Severance Hall and Tomlinson, combined with modern structures like Peter B. Lewis, the new Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), and the Seidman Cancer Center now," he said. http://www.cwruobserver.com/news/university-circle-earns-top-marks-in-beauty-1.2754586#.TyOazPlc-So

October 23, 201311 yr Not sure where to post this...but this is extremely sad and bizarre if true: Former Cleveland Museum of Art Director David Franklin Resigns After Affair, Suicide; Cell Phone of Victim Missing Posted by Vince Grzegorek on Wed, Oct 23, 2013 at 3:34 PM Three days ago, Cleveland Museum of Art director David Franklin abruptly resigned, effective immediately, from his post at the prestigious organization for personal reasons. Scene was the first to give a glance into those personal reasons last night: Franklin had an affair with a CMA staffer (whose name we will not use) and she committed suicide five months ago. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2013/10/23/former-cleveland-museum-of-art-director-david-franklin-resigns-after-affair-suicide-cell-phone-of-victim-missing
October 23, 201311 yr ^Sad indeed. We've been posting stuff on this topic in the Cleveland Arts News thread, which is probably the best place: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,15691.msg679525.html#new

October 22, 20159 yr ^I could be wrong, but I think you might me confusing Judson Manor (north of Chester; not owned by any UC3 partners) with Fenway Manor, the building at Euclid and Stokes.
October 22, 20159 yr ^I could be wrong, but I think you might me confusing Judson Manor (north of Chester; not owned by any UC3 partners) with Fenway Manor, the building at Euclid and Stokes. You're right, that building isn't "incorporated" into the development like Fenway will be. But it will be immediately next door to a UC3 building proposed on Judson's surface parking lot. December 8, 20186 yr University Circle... rent and parking too expensive now? Radical Student Union protests gentrification of University Circle Matt Hooke, A&E Editor December 7, 2018 Filed under Inside the Circle, News Chants of “Cleveland’s not for sale” rang out from the KSL Oval as, on Friday, Nov. 30, the Radical Student Union (RSU) protested the closing of two neighborhood staples, the Happy Dog at the Euclid Tavern and Falafel Cafe. Around 15 RSU members held signs and passed out a list of demands that they want to be addressed by University Circle Inc. (UCI) and Case Western Reserve University. The group felt the closing of the two restaurants is a symptom of what they see as the larger problem of gentrification in the University Circle area. http://observer.case.edu/radical-student-union-protests-gentrification-of-university-circle/
December 9, 20186 yr There is nothing but cheap housing surrounding and within University Circle with only a handful of luxury apartments. God forbid Cleveland has at least a couple nice places in the surrounding sea of foreclosures and low income housing all over Hough, Glenville, Fairfax. Woodhill and East Cleveland. Those protesters are complete jackases. Edited December 9, 20186 yr by TBideon
December 9, 20186 yr If you are complaining simultaneously about gentrification and the high price of parking, I file that under “bless their hearts”
