Posted January 18, 201015 yr part two -- beacon ny here is a link back to part one: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,21953.msg454807.html#msg454807 i wish this was done more often -- these just bend around the corner beautifully  old matteawan train station on the east end of town, renovated into shops & apts in the 1990’s it originally was small, had a second & then later a third story added in the 1800’s here are historic photos i found -- the first scene looks pretty much the same today http://www.kinglyheirs.com/CNE/NDCDutchess.html after the dia museum, this is the biggest old factory in town, wish I had time to go inside so they hung these up instead of defacing the building? very good! i could hear a loud noise -- hang on -- coming up on something very nice! another old factory building next to the falls, they want to make waterfall power here again other side holy vh1 batman! i heart the 70’s! old firehouse (1886) this is as far east as I went, then I peeled back along main st back to main street – in the middle of the street you can see the old ‘dummy light’ traffic light -- one of only 3 left in the usa -- for good reason! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_light#Dummy_lights this is always sad to see, but what to do with an old movie theater? :| i only peeked inside, wow -- you could easily spend hours here! http://www.retroarcademuseum.com/ another old fire station (1911) a sharp diner (1946) – it was featured in the paul newman movie ‘nobodys fool’ whoa – that’s a bold false front :| as we slowly head back to the train – surprisingly beacon is still lively at night yet another old main st fire station -- turned into a popular glass blowing studio http://www.hudsonbeachglass.com/ *i hope you enjoyed a look at wintery, upstate beacon, ny on the hudson – stay tuned for cold spring*
January 18, 201015 yr I just love the building in the first photo, and I can't quite put my finger on why. Oh and in my morning stupor I read the title of this thread as "my bacon - part two."
January 18, 201015 yr  yeah i love that group too -- i think those are all seperate buildings? they wrap around the eastern end of main street -- it actually does a 90 degree turn. you can see the turn there better in the historic photo of the mateawan train station.
January 18, 201015 yr Wow what a gorgeous little town. I love upstate NY towns. Although they are similar to PA towns, they still seem to have their own styles and characteristics. I would love to go there. Thanks for the tours!!
January 18, 201015 yr thx -- oh yeah, definately looks pennsylvanian, with the mountains and all. following dia: beacon the town has taken on quite a bit of an artsy/gallery vibe at either end of main st, while the middle of the strip remains very much 'for the people.'
January 18, 201015 yr Cool! The North Adams of New York State! But a whole lot easier to get to w/o a car. Also like North Adams, looks like there's still some gentrifyin' left to do. Any idea if the retro-arcade museum has hands-on exhibits or if it's eyes only? What torture if only for the eyes.
January 18, 201015 yr ^ yes its a little of both. there is a hands-on section for $10/hr i think. seems like a good bookend to a dia museum visit! there are plenty of places to eat, coffeshops, music, little galleries, antiques and all that and you can even try glass blowing or hiking up mount beacon. no place to stay tho, thats why we stayed two stops south in cold spring. i had an mta brochure and in the summer i guess there is a trolly that goes all around and even a ferry across the hudson to newburgh.
