Well in Browns fashion, they tried to lose, but in the end our rookie kicker and backup QB beat Baker.   Hopefully that quiets down the Baker Bros for a few weeks.

In the meantime, could someone check on Jimmy Donovan?  I was listening to the end of the game and thought he was stroking out!  🤣

It’s going to be a rough 10 weeks with Brissett behind the helm. Jimmy definitely stroked out on the FG kick, the longest by a Browns kicker since 1984. That kick was halfway up the crossbar.

Defense played great in the first half but didn't pressure Baker as much in the second half and had some breakdowns in coverage/assignments in the second half. It seemed like Delpit waa having some problems out there.

Lol - some thoughts:

Offense:

  • Kevin Stefanski is a gem, folks. He put Brisett in some incredible situations and Brisett just wasn't able to make the throw or read. At least 4x we had open receivers for a first down (or 6 pts in the instance of Amari Cooper's fade to the boundary) and Brisett just missed him or didn't see them. He also did a phenomenal job getting Schwartz's confidence back - get him involved in jet sweeps and in space and get him thinking of the game again instead of drops; that's what a good coach and a good leader does when you have a great talent that's struggling. Finally, he incorporated the run about as well as he could without making us one dimensional behind a line missing two starters.
  • Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt are phenomenal talents - hats off to both of them.
  • If there's one thing I'd like to see Stefanski do more of is RPO out of 12 personnel. We have two tight ends that are good blockers and pass catchers - give them an advantage by selling run to an OLB and then getting him manned in coverage or, alternatively, selling run and then allowing him to find a pocket in the zone in the SCIF. Reward Njoku and Harrison, they both work their ass off.
  • I don't love Amari Cooper's effort. He seemed really frustrated with Brisett and it reflected in his body language on and off the field. Twice he had a bench route and very clear didn't accelerate out of the break. I hope that gets worked out.

Defense:

  • John Johnson and Grant Delpit were very disappointing. Both had blown coverages that resulted in game changing plays. It's a real example of doing your 1/11th when you're on the field. It's always tough to say this because we gave up some big plays, but the rest of the defense was stellar. Myles had an awesome game, Anthony Walker was an animal, Newsome stood out playing manned up to the field, and Emerson stepped in and made some big tackles in his NFL debut. There's a lot to be encouraged about, and our biggest errors are very correctable.
  • When Myles is in a wide 9 with a TE to his side to help, I'd like to see us adjust to a blitz more often in that set. Show with the OLB and bring him 1 on 1 against the tackle, put the TE and tackle to a decision - if you show early, you may be able to get the play switched and the see the TE realign.
  • While there's still some slopiness (albeit against a very very good RB), we were much improved in tackling. We wrapped up, grabbed cloth, drove our feet, and rolled. Our defense will keep us in some games this year we otherwise shouldn't be in.

Special Teams:

  • Felton has some confidence issues. We're taught as early as HS, "if you can't get your hips under it, don't field it." I like that the coaches didn't give up on him, but he has to be on an EXTREMELY short leash moving forward.
  • Cade York. It would've been good from 70. Nuff said.

Overall:

We went on the road, with a backup QB, and 2 missing OL and won a season opener. Quite frankly, the Browns dominated 85% of the game - and John Johnson's blown coverage is the only reason we weren't able to just run the clock out earlier. I'm very encouraged by what I saw. Looking towards Week 12 when we get Deshaun back, I think this team will be 5-6 or 6-5 if we're very lucky. If we get 5 wins in the first 11 games and stay relatively healthy, this team will be a PROBLEM with an elite QB.

It's pretty basic.  Yesterday was a carbon copy of last year.  Terrible passing game, phenomenal running game, serviceable defense.  The difference, good kicking game.  The Browns could've been 11-6, maybe 12-5 last year had we had this kicking game versus a kicker with a 70% hit rate, and under 40% from the 40 yard line.  Not saying we shouldn't have moved on from Mayfield, because that was the smart decision.  You can't win Superbowls with a crappy QB and a good kicking game, but it may sneak you into the playoffs.

Really nice write up @YABO713. You fail to disappoint. My prediction that this current team goes 5-6 prior to the return.

I think the Browns could start the season with a very good record then hit a rough patch after the Oct. 2 game with the Falcons. The following week the Browns face the Chargers, but the game is at home. How the Browns play against the Chargers could set the tone for their tough matches against NE, Ratbirds, Cincy, Bills and Bucs. If they come out of that Chargers game with a win, I think it sets the Browns up for winning half of their next six games.

The primary purpose of a logo is to sell merchandise.  The elf does seem kind of wimpy for a football team, but it's better than using a logo-less helmet as a logo.

IMO, a brown bear would make a good logo for the Browns. That would sell merchandise AND scare the crap out of children. 😄

I do like the helmet.

The elf is just lame, but I suppose I'm not the target crowd.

Anyhow, just be ready to explain to people when they ask why the Browns logo is a demonic horribly dressed baby.

Hahahaha what a great list of options!

Cleveland Browns dropping third quarter 'Hang on Sloopy' tradition

CLEVELAND — While "Hang on Sloopy" is typically associated with Ohio State, it's also been a staple of Cleveland Browns games.

Or at least it was.

Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, the Browns' official Twitter account posted a poll asking fans to vote on which song will be played at the end of the third quarter during Cleveland's home opener against the New York Jets on Sunday. The poll indicates that the Browns will no longer be playing "Hang on Sloopy" ahead of the start of the fourth quarter, bringing an end to one of the franchise's most polarizing in-game experiences at FirstEnergy Stadium.

The four options for Browns fans to vote on for Sunday's sing-along song are as follows:

"Wonderwall" by Oasis

"Tiny Dancer" by Elton John

"Chicken Fried" by Zac Brown Band

"Uptown Girl" by Billy Joel

Can't wait for yabo's analysis of that.

Same old Browns. They always fall apart late in the 4th quarter. They really should be 0-2 but they got lucky last week.

Talk about losing in spectacular fashion... with beakdowns in communication two weeks in a row on defense. We should not have lost because of the missed extra point or because of the last second interception. The game was in the bag with two minutes in the fourth!

try sitting in a bar of jets fans for that ridiculous collapse.

ugh.

there is plenty of blame to go around, but i’ll lay it on the star of the team’s own feet. chubb should have gone down after getting a first down instead of impulsively running it in for a td. the jets had no t.o.’s. plus he knows to do that — he did something similar last season when he ran out of bounds instead of scoring knowing they could kneel and win.

yeah anyway, ugh again. another charlie brownsiest of browns games.

Who were the CB/S coverage guys on the Corey Davis 66yd TD Bomb. Was it Emerson & Delpit ?  They definately

were not hustling after their miscommunication. Davis could have walked it in.

^ i dk, but yeah that was awful -- and i just thought of this, but actually hunt did the same dumb thing as chubb when he ran out of bounds after getting a first down. he should have stayed in bounds to run the clock as well. i know its not so easy in the heat of the battle, but thats where more level headed coaching reminders are supposed to come in.

The last time the Browns started out 2-0 was 1993.

Let that sink in for how monumentally pathetic this franchise has been.

So, if you went back 3 weeks ago, most people would say that if the Browns started 1-1 it would be a good start. Many thought they would lose to the Panthers and beat the Jets.  End of the day, not much is different besides the embarrassing collapse.

That stings more for the fan than the player. The next 4 weeks will define the team, if they are bad or decent. At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is the final score. It does not matter how you win or lose, only that you are 1-1 now.

idk, both games demonstrated defensive vulnerability that might be an issue all year

The supposedly highly regarded defense has not delivered.  Fourth quarter collapses in both games.  The highly paid and high draft pick stacked defensive secondary has been burned on big plays. If it weren't for the kicker's long field goal against Carolina and a big penalty that could have gone either way, the Browns could have gone 0-2.

As for Chubb scoring that last touchdown, both the coaching staff and Chubb have forgotten their own decisions from less than 2 years ago.  In the November 2020 game against the Texans, the coaching staff and Baker Mayfield TOLD Chubb to not score when the Browns had a late possession and close lead.  The Texans had no timeouts.  After a 59-yard run, Chubb went down on his own at the 1-yard line.  Three kneel-downs ended the game for a Browns victory.  Top-tier coaches remember what works.  Chubb should have remembered, too.

Finally, after an epic collapse of that magnitude, the fans had every right to boo for what they witnessed.  If the players don't want to be booed by angry fans, then the TEAM AND COACHES need to keep their heads in the game and play for the entire 60 minutes.

Who is Brownie the Elf? Inside the rise, fall, and revival of the Cleveland Browns' beloved -- and bemusing -- mascot

CLEVELAND -- Nobody, at least still living, knows for sure how Brownie the Elf came to be the first official mascot of the Cleveland Browns some 76 years ago.

Yet one fact is certain: It was Art Modell who put the elf on the shelf after buying the team in 1961.

Okay folks, here's the breakdown as I see it:

Overall

- We still have some stupid penalties, which ultimately falls on the HC - that needs to be cleaned up.

- I cannot tell you how difficult it is to bounce back from a debilitating loss like that, especially against a team that's historically had your number. The Browns, and the fan base, should be proud of that resilience. That loss could've been a season defining moment in the negative, but it looks like this squad decided to just let it be a chink in the armor, which is phenomenal and speaks to their mental toughness.

Offense

- If anyone still questions Stefanski, idk what to tell ya man. I keep having people text me about the pass on 3rd and 1, and I agree it looks like a bad call and probably was. However, if Stefanski's film study told him that the Steelers go Cover 0 on 3rd and 1 near mid field and send pressure, then lining up to pass put the Browns in the best position possible to convert. Again, it was probably a bad call - but look at the full body of work (see below)

- The Browns are averaging 26.3 Offensive PPG this year - with Jacoby Brissett (and absent Jack Conklin for 2 games). If you don't see that as the work of a very skilled play caller, IDK what to do for you.

- Stefanski has put Brissett in positions where he can be successful, and Brissett has grabbed the opportunity by the haunches. The run / pass balance is wonderful at the moment - and we've done an incredible job getting Hunt touches (FB dive, tunnel screen from the slot, etc.). We showed  A LOT of 13 personnel this week, which forces the Falcons to prepare for it. I'm predicting that the Falcons game will see a lot of RPO and play action to our TEs as a counter to the Falcons game planning.

- We did an incredible job attacking the Steelers zone coverage - especially Njoku, who deserves some recognition for his improvement as a student of the game and a blocker.

- Amari Cooper is very good - even though he had a couple avoidable mistakes yesterday - especially running out of bounds. His route running is among the best in the NFL.

- Nicholas Chubb. That's all.

Defense

- Joe Woods needs to help Myles out. I focused on Myles most snaps yesterday, and we seldom send zone blitzes to his side of the field, especially when he's lined up to the boundary. FORCE them to play Myles 1 on 1 with a tackle. Instead, Woods assisted the LDEs when rotated (which I understand, but don't agree with). Once we have Clowney back, I'd love to see him line Myles up as a 3 tech against a guard in some passing situations. Get him isolated and give him a two-way go - watch him eat.

- Jacob Phillips and Takitaki did an excellent job when called upon - especially in a tough circumstance. They should be proud.

- It didn't make headlines, but when Grant Delpit broke down, kept his feet moving, and made the tackle on Diontae Johnson in the open field on 2nd and 8 to keep the Steelers in a 3rd down situation, he likely saved a score. It was extremely impressive and not easy to do in the open field.

- Our secondary still struggled with communication - I'd like to see John Johnson take more of a player/coach role in the secondary, and ensure that calls are communicated. We really struggle in Cover 2, and 6 to the boundary - that's usually an in-play communication issue.

We all wish the Browns were 3-0, but we all would've gladly taken a 2-1 start before the season began, so let's be happy. Imo, we need to get to 5-6 by Deshaun's return to give ourselves a shot at a playoff run.

I was fortunate (lol) enough to be on hands team through college - getting it out of bounds is a better result than falling on it.

Watching Brisset, especially these last two games, just makes me so much more pissed about last year. All you have to do is be on time with the ball, Stefanski will get you an open throw. No wonder OBJ wanted out so bad. Three step drop, nothing there deep, give it to the chief for 5-8 yards. Easy money.

Brissett is a perfect quarterback for an offense that can dominate with a power running game. He makes safe throws and capitalizes on defenses trying to stack the box. But when the Browns have to throw, such as if they get down a couple of scores to high-powered offenses like LAC and Buffalo, Brissett hasn't shown the ability in his career to light up the scoreboard and get his team back in the game. DeShaun can light it up. Yes, we can make the playoffs with Brissett. But we could win a Super Bowl with DeShaun -- if the Browns defense doesn't break down.

Could be a QB controversy in week 13 if Brissett keeps winning and Jimmy has to force his $250 million massage client into games.

Mayfield at the bottom. And Browns defense struggling against bottom-third QBs.

I love you @Cleburger, and I feel like you're being sarcastic here so I'll assume you are and direct my ire elsewhere lol.

But we now have objective evidence of Kevin Stefanski elevating QB play - with Baker and Jacoby in particular. Both QBs he's had are average at best - but he gets them to reach into that top 3rd of QB play. IMAGINE what he will do with Deshaun Watson, a QB who can throw on the run AND sling it from the pocket.

Guys - Deshaun Watson is a top 5 talent at QB, and he'll be under a coach that puts his QBs in excellent positions to be successful. Let's not "Cleveland sports fan" ourselves into questioning if 2+2 really does = 4.
