Is it though? Weren't there some shenanigans 15ish years ago where the players weren't trusting the team medical opinions? I feel it was a staph infection issue.

After spending $230 million guaranteed dollars on a franchise QB the Browns are going to be starting an XFL QB currently on their practice squad against the best team in the league this Sunday.

This never ends. The older I get, the more I realize that bringing the Browns back in 1999 was a big mistake.

It's a good thing maybe that they retired that Browns QB jersey with all the names on the back.

At least some of us remember when the Browns were not a cursed laughingstock.

Not sure what it is with our pro sports teams. If it wasn't for bad luck they'd have no luck at all.

Is the spread 9.5 points or touchdowns?

It’s not all Cleveland sports, it’s the Browns. They are a special kind of bad.

And then the Browns pull out a stunner.

I’m not saying we didn’t deserve to win today - the Browns played with toughness and grit - but the football gods finally gave them a few lucky breaks - like the missed 41 yard field goal by the 49ers and a couple questionable defensive calls against the 49ers on the Browns’ last drive.

And why so many 49ers fans in our house? I was getting some Cubs’ flashbacks to the 2016 World Series! “ Destination Cleveland”might’ve been happy, but it’s hard to imagine so many SF fans flew into town for this game.  I hate seeing our home field crowd looking like an L.A. home crowd!

The niners pulled a Cleveland today and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

This was a game that just feels like the Browns were going to find a way to lose in heartbreaking fashion. It was nice to see them hang with SF and give them their first L

I’ll definitely be on today… I’ve got some venom to spit at you Stefanski haters

Okay, first things first, the defense was incredible yet again - and the crazy thing is, I still don't think the defense played its best game...

Defense

- Myles is unbelievable. I know people talk about TJ Watt as his direct comparison, but that's silly. Myles doesn't have to line up in a WIIIIIDE 9 technique to get leverage, he can be head up on the tackle, still get leverage for his rush and also effectively stop the run. Dude is a generational talent at DE and I'm happy I get to watch him. People can use the "Trent Williams was banged up" cop out if they want, but Myles ate his lunch. And the best part of his game is that he is what we need him to be. He wasn't just a pass rusher yesterday - he occupied doubles, he delayed Jusczyk out of the backfield, he stopped runs, and he freed up JOK and our LBs to do their thing.

- Our cornerback room is DEEP. MJ Emerson would be a starter on 15+ NFL teams.

- Delpit continues to play well, and he clearly is an instinctual player. That also cost us SF's first TD yesterday when he blew his assignment to cut off CMC, but Grant guessed wrong and CMC trotted into the endzone.

- Schwartz has some incredible blitz packages to the boundary, which often eliminates a QBs throwing lanes for "pitch and catch" stick or bench routes (which is what killed us last year)

NOW FOR MY FESTIVUS AIRING OF GRIEVANCES... I'VE GOT A LOT OF PROBLEMS WITH YOU BROWNS FANS, AND NOW YOU'RE GONNA HEAR ABOUT IT!!!!!!

Offense:

- Stefanski called an incredible game. And lest we forget he also called an incredibly timed screen to Njoku which was called back by a phantom hold.

- I know all of you are experts and could call a better game in your sleep.... but our offense averaged 5.5 yards a play in the second half... against THE SAN FRANCISCO 49ers!! I'm also not sure if you're aware of this... but we did so with our third string QB and Jerome Ford at running back.... I'm also not sure if you knew this or not.... but we also did so without our best offensive lineman....

- I think it's a fair criticism that Stefanski sometimes needs to go Occum's razor with playcalling, as he gets too creative... but his creativity also kept a drive alive for us on 4th down when he spent the first 4 weeks of the season setting up the Harrison Bryant sneak only to call a pitch which took us from 4th and inches to a touchdown.

- We also utilized the hell out of pre-snap shifts, which effectively neutralized Bosa. Just about all deep drops that PJ took, he was either rolling out with slide protection or Bosa was chipped or doubled.

- I understand that many people think we should've run the ball every play on our last drive, but a roll out right and a completion effectively ends the game... PJ Walker should've slid if someone wasn't wide open. And I'm sure Stefanski communicated that in the headset but it wasn't executed.

- Regardless, Kyle Shanahan is considered the best play caller in the NFL... and he called 3 consecutive pass plays with 3 minutes left and a 1 point lead. There are often considerations for a play call (i.e. the Browns play a ton of 2 man in the 4th quarter and two of SF's plays were 2 beaters) that are based on metrics unseen to most fans.

I'm at this weird place where I love the Browns with every cell in my body, but have a near equal loathing for our fan base.

The Browns are 3-2 with only one bad loss - and that team is also 3-2.....

I think a certain segment of Browns fans are just flat out angry with their personal lives, and for most of their life they've had the Browns to point at and say "hey, at least I'm not as bad as them"... and for some reason the Browns winning games in the National Football League makes those people angry.

There's tradition here.   The 1981 49ers won 15 of their last 16 games on the way to winning their first Super Bowl.

The only loss was to the Browns.

There a lot of 49ers fans in the area with the long time owners from just down the road in Youngstown. I grew up there, you were either a Steelers, Browns or 49ers fan.

I was at Stone Mad Saturday night and a 9ers fan was telling me how they were FLOORED that they didn't pass a single homeless person on their way there from their AirBNB on 57th.

The niners also play in a very expensive market.  So it's like when the Yankees come here to play the Guards--there are people in NYC who find it cheaper to fly to Cleveland for a weekend series than go to their own home games.

The fact that the niners were undefeated and chasing a streak record also probably helped....

and lets face it, there are a lot of casual frontrunner fans too. maybe they’ll think twice and support their browns after that game lol.

@YABO713 As someone with some experience in this area, you should consider starting your own Adsense-enabled Browns blog. Maybe called it "Monday Morning Cleveland Coach." Your insights and analysis are very worthwhile and well-grounded. And to create a little controversy and to lighten the mood, throw a subtle dig at Angry Browns Fan every so often. It will get you some hate-mail now and then, but if you don't get at least a little hate mail in the writing biz, you're not doing it right.

Here's another reason to write an analysis blog... One thing I've come to appreciate is why local sports talk shows discuss Browns stuff almost exclusively -- because it is gold. Every time I've written a Browns-related real estate or development article, it's generated a ton of views. In fact, among my top-five most-viewed articles since 2019, three have been Browns-related stories (the two that weren't shocked me!)....

Browns leaning toward new stadium – NEOtrans    68K
Haslams’ major announcement(s) – NEOtrans    63K
Greyhound station leaving downtown – NEOtrans    60K
PearlBrook shopping center to be razed – NEOtrans    49K
Sources: Browns want new stadium; Mayor wants community input – NEOtrans    26K

So if you want some help on starting/writing/promoting a Browns blog, let me know.

I appreciate the suggestion, and I'll consider it. However, I did have a blog, briefly, after post-grad and during the beginning of law school (2013-2015)...

It stopped being fun, however. The cherry on top was the time I had a disgruntled Browns fan threaten to kill me and my family because I pointed out that the Bengals were running Cover 4 on a play, and Andrew Hawkins made a mistake by not running a dig underneath Miles Austin's post.

Browns pulled one out yesterday and that Garrett dude looked pretty good.

After years of the opposite, it is so strange to be on the beneficial end of some horrible officiating!

Also, as I wait for a Monday morning @YABO713 blog post, i'm scratching my head that the so-called top defense in the NFL let the Colts put up 38 points and Gardner Minshew throw for more than 300.   The good news is that Minshew is now 0-8 in games that he passed for more than 300 yards.

REALLY weird game. I'll type something up when I have time, but I think people are reading a little too much into the 38 points - but it was definitely our worst team defensive performance.

Mary Kay believes the Browns could likely pry Jacoby Brissett away from the Commanders before the trade deadline, and they should definitely try. I won't bother posting the link because it's behind a paywall and I would be stunned if the Commanders would give up a veteran backup QB.

I take it by the lack of activity in here, most people are super skeptical of the Browns, and Rightfully so!!!!

Anyway, 5-3! Yay.

They have a tremendous opportunity next week:  that’s going to be the biggest game of the regular season.  They need to win games like next week if they want to win divisions.  If they still can’t find a way to win, then they are just team hovering for wildcard spots and will never do anything serious.  It’s not a must win in the standings but I think this is a must win for Kevin, the way he’s viewed, and the trajectory of where this franchise is at

I don’t see next week as a must win but you have to split the next two weeks. That puts you at 6-4 with games against Denver, LA, Jets, Bears, and Texans. The second half of the year is great chance to pile up wins and fight for positioning while the rest of the AFC North have much tougher schedules. Injuries are starting to pile up though.

^not a must win the in standings. It’s a must win for stefanski and if he can be the guy.  He needs this one

Do you think it's fair to judge Stefanski on how Watson plays?

think the Steelers will fall off. Bengals are surging and will likely vault into 1 or 2 in the division. Browns have a path to 10 or 11 wins and wildcard spot either the 2nd or 3rd spot (likely 3rd spot given that a 3rd place team has a hard time getting a 2nd spot). IN the 3rd spot, they would play either a KC, Jax or (Bal/Cin) in the wild card round. That would be a winnable game given that it would be strength on strength although ideally, it would be best to avoid an AFC North foe in the first round of the playoffs.

I would not quite throw the Browns into Super Bowl contender but they certainly are a playoff team and a team that can do some damage in the playoffs with the right matchups

i think he has shown he can put people in position to win regardless of who is QB, but we stack alot of games we should win...which is great...he needs to go win a huge game on the road.  This is year 4.

If he wins it solidifies him as the guy. He’s won road games with a good amount on the line but it shows the Browns with him can play and win true road tests.

No no no, that can't be. I've been told Stefanski is a fool and my drunk neighbor can call a better game than him?

talking with my friends about this who have no issues losing this game.  They are setting a goal of playoffs.  I kind of feel like we need to have the goal of winning the division.  The talent is there, especiall on D to do it.

I have always felt Stefanski was a good coach, he just has never had a QB to make him look brilliant, but he knows how to manage a good team and get the most out of all his players.  I think he has gotten a raw deal with an average QB in Mayfield and then losing all the draft capital they have in the Watson deal that is not looking great the longer this has gone on.

Bill Belichick didn't looks too good during his tenure with the Browns, but he turned out to be one of the most successful coaches of all time.  Having talent on the field makes a difference.

Call it cliche, but the goal should never be anything less than the highest goal possible.

There have been less talented teams than this Browns rosters to win Super Bowls.

I think Belichick got a raw deal with the Browns. He inherited a bad team when he took over the job. They had an aging roster and poor QB play at the time. In his second year, he turned them into a competitor. They were supposed to win the division in 95 and were off to a solid start until the whole front office upheaval about moving to Baltimore happened and it pretty much killed morale for that season (there was nothing he could do about that).

Overall, he won in Cleveland despite the clusterf*** that was going on around him. I do not think any coach could hold the team together with what was going on around him.

Not only win the division, they were many pundits' pick for a Super Bowl team. And they had the two first round picks that became Ray Lewis and Jonathan Ogden. They were set up to dominate for a while.

You obviously don’t know what you’re talking about. Belichick inherited a team that was 2 yrs removed from the AFC title game. The Browns had the skilled players in place, but also had a poor O-line. Instead of rebuilding the O-line, he ran Kosar, Slaughter and Langhorne out of town. Belichick made the playoffs one time in 5 yrs, and because of the hatred of the Browns he created when he released Kosar,  he was one of the reasons the Browns left for Baltimore. So the bottom line is that Browns’ fans got the raw deal, not Belichick!!

They were, unfortunately, much of that would have been in Baltimore if Belichick were retained and made the move.

However, imagine if the Browns never left. They would have 2 Super Bowls, multiple division championships and ALWAYS competitive even when they are having a down year. I can't remember a time where the Ravens have been a truly terrible team. WIth the Browns and Bengals, there have been a lot of times where October 1 rolls around and as a fan base you say, why bother. WIth the Steelers and Ravens, you have never felt that way.

I think a lot of this is that those guys were nostalgic figures to the Browns 80s glory days. I do not disagree with his decisions. Slaughter certainly left in his prime, but receivers in general are on the downside of their career by 29 or 30.  Kosar had been injured a ton and he was very slow in the pocket. He was a good QB and great in the mid 80s but by the early 90s the injuries had caught up with him. He was a good QB but not quite as good as Marino.

But you can't always just look at those guys. Look at Clay Mathews and many of the defensive stars. They had gotten old and were on the downside of their career too.

Also, remember, it was not like Belichick took over a dominant team and tore it apart. The Browns were a decent team in 1989 and then stunk in 1990 such that they fired their coach. In 1991 Belichick came in and had to rebuild that, and took on a lot of new players into his system in order to do that. 1991 was a rebuilding year, and 1992 essentially was too. By 1994 they were competitive again and ready to take the jump in 1995 until the rug was pulled out from under them.

There is no guarantee that would have happened if they stayed in Cleveland.  Our sports teams seem to be cursed.

The Browns could've won if they had stayed.  They would have had just as much of a chance as they would anywhere else.

And they have a shot at beating the Ravens this weekend.
