July 31, 200717 yr Baxter all smiles on first day back Zac Jackson, Staff Writer 07.30.2007 Gary Baxter says his road back to the football field started last October 22, just hours after he tore both patellar tendons while breaking up a pass against Denver. "Laying in the hospital bed, still in my game pants," he said. "I said I'd be back." More at cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com
July 31, 200717 yr ^ Word on the street is that Frye or Anderson will be gone by Week 1, obviously Quinn will be there, and they don't need 3 young QB's. Dorsey is the teaching QB on the team.
July 31, 200717 yr Thanks for keeping us updated, KS5214! I thought I read mostly everything published on the Browns, but you're posting articles that I must have overlooked. I'm fired up for Gary Baxter. What a story for that guy to be running and practicing for the NFL after tearing both patellar tendons! Andre Knott on WTAM was talking about how people at training camp were so amazed that they now people in god and prayer after seeing Gary in action. He also said that Baxter is the kind of athlete that kids should look up to because he overcame adversity when everyone was telling him he couldn't do it, believed in himself, and busted his tail to reach his goal. The Orange & Brown Report has been blogging to training camp sessions. Check out the live feed at theobr.com.
July 31, 200717 yr They should just use one of them for one of those positions where you push people. I'm sorry, I don't know anything about football, haha.
July 31, 200717 yr Baxter & Bentley are both amazing stories.. something is up with Bentley though.. maybe it's just me.. but it seems like the Browns don't even want Bentley back.
July 31, 200717 yr Baxter & Bentley are both amazing stories.. something is up with Bentley though.. maybe it's just me.. but it seems like the Browns don't even want Bentley back. They're just cautious about bringing him back too early, and possibly re-injuring him. Plus it's early, this is when experimentation happens. I went to camp Saturday afternoon (Sunday too, but they only practiced down by the "VIP tent". :x ). Ryan Tucker looks like he's all the way back. Shaffer took some reps at RT as well. Thomas got schooled by Kamerion, but that's to be expected with a rookie. Derek Anderson's having accuracy problems. Braylon looks in mid season form, so does K2 when he practices. Speaking of "not practicing", it's always fun to watch Ted Washington in camp. He does very little except laugh at the very idea of doing more. :-). The best training camp coverage is probably here: http://browns.scout.com/
July 31, 200717 yr I've been to camp also, and yesterday Thomas shut Wimbley down. Also, Tucker never had a physical problem last season, it was some sort of personal/mental problem. Everyone around the league is saying Edwards is going to have a break out year, he came into the NFL as a good route runner, now he's an excellent route runner. With an improved o-line, whoever is QB will have more time to get off an accurate throw.
July 31, 200717 yr Browns' Gary Baxter takes step in amazing comeback Tuesday, July 31, 2007 Tony Grossi Plain Dealer Reporter The night he lay in a hospital bed still wearing his game pants after tearing patellar tendons in both knees, Gary Baxter said he would someday return to practice and play again. The first part of that promise was realized Monday. Precisely at 5:33 p.m., the Browns cornerback walked onto the practice field to a smattering of applause. Some teammates shook his hand or hugged him. More at cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com
July 31, 200717 yr Browns' Charlie Frye learns secret from Eagles' Donovan McNabb Tuesday, July 31, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot Plain Dealer Reporter Browns quarterback Charlie Frye discovered his own version of The Secret while training with Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb in Arizona last month. Working out at a gym called Make Plays, Frye learned from the mobile McNabb the fine art of when to run out of the pocket and when to stay put. More at cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com
July 31, 200717 yr Cleveland Browns' Brady Quinn feels holdout is right thing Browns rookie QB says he has to make sure contract is 'fair' Tuesday, July 31, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot Plain Dealer Reporter Browns rookie quarterback Brady Quinn said Monday from Arizona he feels he's doing the right thing by waiting for the right deal, even though it's difficult. "I'd love to be there competing for the starting job," said Quinn, who has missed the first four days of camp. "But it's a long contract, and I have to make sure it's fair in the event I become the starter." More at cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com
July 31, 200717 yr ^ More proof that Dorsey will be on their Week 1 roster. Also, Quinn better get his you know what in camp.. Cleveland fans are not the type who are gonna be love struck with a QB who is holding out for more money.. not in this town.
July 31, 200717 yr Columnist Bud Shaw says Browns need to get Brady Quinn in Tuesday, July 31, 2007 Bud Shaw Plain Dealer Columnist Nobody roots for Goliath, or the training-camp holdout. The usual factors are grinding on Brady Quinn this time around. It's the same old dance. Negotiations slow to a waltz. Player gets slammed for not being eternally grateful for the chance to play pro football - and in this case wear the proud jersey of a 4-12 team - while the organization earns a free pass for not getting him into camp on time. July 31, 200717 yr Jaguars pick up Couch Monday, July 30, 2007 From wire reports Tim Couch, whom the Browns selected with the No. 1 overall draft pick in 1999, signed a two-year contract with the Jaguars on Sunday, getting a chance to revive his career as a backup to quarterback Byron Leftwich. Couch has not played a down in the NFL since the 2004 preseason. The contract will pay Couch the veteran minimum of $595,000 this season if he makes the team. He would earn slightly more in 2008. Couch could end up supplanting Quinn Gray as the team's third-string quarterback - a move that would save the Jags about $700,000 this season. Gotta give Tim credit for making the effort. I doubt he's gone through all his money yet, even being married to Heather Kozar. Now that he's signed with a non AFCN team, I'd love to see him succeed. I've been to camp also, and yesterday Thomas shut Wimbley down. Also, Tucker never had a physical problem last season, it was some sort of personal/mental problem. You must have been in the tent. We couldn't see anything on our end....we usually sit in the same general area for the convenience of security (we often have our own cop  ). We could see Joe getting better even in the course of practice. He appears to be a quick study. His aunt is sure garnering attention....lol Tucker's problems were mental, but IMNSHO he looks sharper and stronger than either of the last couple years.
July 31, 200717 yr Absolutely, Tucker looks stronger, I think the starting line as it stands right now would be Thomas, Steinbach, Fraley, McKinney, Tucker. We'll see what happens with Bentley. And I have a feeling that Schaffer is all but auditioning to be traded. He has a large salary and unless he can show something at RT, he's gone.
July 31, 200717 yr They have the physical talent there, it's just a question of when/if they will gel and work as a unit. Size/talent is important, but chemistry is huge on an o-line. Also, it'll be interesting to see how the backups develop and if they will/can become contributing members of the line.

Also, it'll be interesting to see how the backups develop and if they will/can become contributing members of the line. Yes, I hope they are able to gel fast and build some much need confidence as they seem to take most of the heat anytime anything goes wrong. I just don't want to see our QB - whoever it is - on his back more than hooka at a republican convention!
July 31, 200717 yr Anyone interested in having an Urban Ohio fantasy football league? go ahead and set it up (i'd recommend a new thread), i can't guarantee i'll be good, but i'll run my mouth and make more guarantees than jon kitna.

July 31, 200717 yr Someone want to set up a Yahoo! fantasy football league? I've never done it before, so someone with experience should probably run the thing. I despise how Frye and Anderson lock onto receivers. It couldn't be more obvious!
July 31, 200717 yr http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/league/urbanohio ID #: 300221 Password: development I set it to 12 teams, I can increase or decrease the # of teams based upon demand. We should probably post this in a new thread so those who don't read the Browns thread can join in the fun.

August 1, 200717 yr Cleveland Browns happy with Shaun Smith in the middle Wednesday, August 01, 2007 Tony Grossi Plain Dealer Reporter Nose tackles are supposed to be the biggest guys on the team. Part of their job description is to take up as much space as they can along the defensive front. Shaun Smith looks the part. Signed in free agency off the Cincinnati Bengals' bench, Smith checked in at his first Browns training camp at 6-2 and 325 pounds. He's squatty and wide, just what coaches want in the middle of a three-man defensive front. More at cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com
August 1, 200717 yr From SI: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Where's Brady? Browns QB blowing his chance The other day at Browns camp in Berea, Ohio, I kept hearing over and over from fans and people in the organization: Where is Brady Quinn? It's a good question. Every year, holdouts are a way of life in the NFL, particularly with the rookies in the first round. My theory is we spend far too much time on a story that never goes away and never interests anyone. But the Quinn story is a little bit different because, after he was drafted 22nd overall by Cleveland, it was widely assumed his experienced agent, Tom Condon, would want the Notre Dame quarterback to get paid far better than the slot for the No. 22 pick. There's some logic there because Quinn performed better his last two years at Notre Dame than a guy who you'd normally see get taken in the 20s. But the slot is the slot. And the Browns are not paying him like the No. 11 pick just because they had him graded far better than No. 22. It isn't just the front office that's frustrated with Quinn. Players are usually business-will-be-business guys, but I got a sense a few of his teammates think Quinn is out of mind for not being in camp. And he shouldn't expect a welcome mat whenever he arrives. After one minicamp practice in the spring, veteran nose tackle Ted Washington, whose role, in part, is to put rookies in their place, yelled at Quinn for being such an attention magnet. "Remember, you ain't done nothing yet," Washington hollered. Spirit of the team stuff, yes. But pointed and with meaning. I'm told the Browns and Condon are extremely close on the dollar amount in the contract, with only structure and early guaranteed money now standing in the way. It's at times like this when an intelligent player such as Quinn needs to make a call to his agent and say: "Whatever we're arguing about right now in terms of structure isn't worth it. I need to be in camp and I need to be in camp yesterday." Compounding the problem is that Quinn did an autograph show in Cleveland earlier this summer and charged $75 per autographed photo. Talk about rubbing the locals the wrong way. That, combined with this ill-advised holdout, led one Browns insider to tell me the team wouldn't be surprised when Quinn finally reported to training camp. There would probably be a segment of fans on hand that would boo him. It's absolutely amazing that Quinn, who could have run for mayor in May, now would be lucky to get elected dog-catcher. Bottom line: The Browns would love to serve up on a silver platter the quarterback job to this Ohio golden boy, but he's probably within two or three days of getting so far behind, it would be hard for him to catch up and earn the starting job before midseason.
August 1, 200717 yr This holdout is the best thing possible.. anyone with a football IQ of 10 would not want Quinn starting right now, midseason may be pushing it. Let Frye or Anderson take a beating until the o-line gels, then start Quinn.
August 1, 200717 yr Knee surgery will sideline Cleveland Browns defensive lineman Roye for all preseason Posted by Mary Kay Cabot August 01, 2007 13:40PM Browns starting left defensive end Orpheus Roye will undergo arthroscopic surgery Thursday on his right knee and be lost for the remainder of preseason. "We hope to have him back for the regular season," said coach Romeo Crennel. More at cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com
August 1, 200717 yr Lewis to grace SI cover Steve King, Staff Writer 08.01.2007 The Browns are hoping for a repeat performance in February, maybe with a photo of them hoisting the Lombardi Trophy after a victory in Super Bowl XLII in Glendale, Ariz. In the meantime, though, they're more than happy to make it onto the cover of this week's edition of Sports Illustrated. The popular magazine, which hits newsstands in Ohio late this week, features Browns running back Jamal Lewis running through a gauntlet sled. It's sure to be a hot seller in Northeast Ohio. August 1, 200717 yr Crennel: No timetable for QB choice Zac Jackson, Staff Writer 07.31.2007 Five days of training camp are in the books. The Browns' quarterback situation and competition stands just as it did five days ago. Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson are still splitting reps. Romeo Crennel still says neither has distinguished himself from the other and that there's no timetable to name a starter. Brady Quinn is still unsigned and missing. August 2, 200717 yr Question for everyone.. What do you think the Browns should do in regards to their defensive line? Especially with Roye having surgery and presumably not being 100% by week 1. There are some big name players like Simeon Rice and soon to be Corey Simon available.. do the Browns make a run at one of them? Or do we stick with the unproven late round/undrafted backups we have?
August 2, 200717 yr 4-12...they're the Browns, and they are still in a darn tough division. They'll finish a respectable 4th (out of 4) in the AFC North...they have improved their team, but it's a large hurdle to clear the Bengals, Ravens AND Steelers.
August 2, 200717 yr Good thoughts -- I definitely agree that we need help on defensive line, even when Orpheus comes back. Unfortunately, I think Simeon Rice is too small to play end in a 3-4 defense. As for Corey Simon, he hasn't played in almost two years I think. Plus, he's always been a defensive tackle in a 4-3 defense. He could probably play either nose tackle or end in the 3-4, but we already have Teddy Washington and Shaun Smith at nose tackle. He might be a good fit physically for a 3-4 end, but I doubt that we could convince a ~5-7 year veteran, former Pro Bowler to switch to to a 3-4 defensive end when he'll probably get offers from other 4-3 teams that would be more attractive to him. Maybe I'm a bit pessimistic, but I think we may have to stick with who we have until we can pick someone up next offseason. Or maybe someone else will be cut before training camp is out.
August 2, 200717 yr Corey Simon's an end, not a NT, in a 3-4. He was always one of the quicker 4-3 DTs so that might be a fit for him, depending on his post-injury abilities. Oh...check this out:
August 2, 200717 yr Cleveland Browns running back Jamal Lewis on cover of Sports Illustrated Thursday, August 02, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot Plain Dealer Reporter Running back Jamal Lewis was surprised Monday to hear he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated's fantasy football issue. "I hadn't heard that yet," said Lewis. "That's news to me. That's a great accomplishment but I think it does more to expose the Browns more than myself, to put this team out there, just to let people know we're coming and that we're going to be a threat this year." August 2, 200717 yr Oh.. don't forget Tank Johnson is available after he serves his suspension.. that's another route the Browns could go if they feel he has learned his lesson. The SI jinx sure worked its magic on Tim Couch :-P
August 3, 200717 yr Latest dirt on Cleveland Browns running game is positive Friday, August 03, 2007 Tony Grossi - Plain Dealer Reporter Through seven practices, these have been the sounds of Browns training camp: Groans for the passing game. Cheers for the running game. Thursday's session in shorts was typical. The quarterbacks were largely unimpressive, the receivers worse. Braylon Edwards, Travis Wilson and Josh Cribbs had drops. August 3, 200717 yr Hickerson's route to the Hall of Fame Friday, August 03, 2007 The Browns won six team rushing titles in Hickerson's 15 years. They never did so before Hickerson or after him. That includes the years of Marion Motley and Jim Brown's rookie year of 1957. They won those six rushing titles in a nine-year span, 1958-67 - the best stretch in NFL history. One of the seasons they missed was 1961. Hickerson was out all year with a broken leg. Jim Brown's rushing average plummeted 1.2 yards without Hickerson. August 3, 200717 yr Ut oh.. Browns' Tucker violates NFL steroid policy BEREA, Ohio -- Browns offensive tackle Ryan Tucker was suspended Friday for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL's steroid policy. Tucker, one of Cleveland's leaders on the field and in the locker room, missed part of last season with what the team called a "mental disorder." He says he is now healthy and is eligible to return to the roster Oct. 1, one day after the Browns host the Baltimore Ravens. More at www.ap.org
