Browns put together a forgotten perfect season in 1948

Long before the 2007 New England Patriots and the 1972 Miami Dolphins, perfection in pro football was first achieved by the Browns. Paul Brown's creation produced a 15-0 championship season in the All-America Football Conference in 1948.

ahh, nothing like going perfect in a league of eight teams....... I'm not sure where the PD's crappy reporting gets "10 teams"

ahh, nothing like reading!  I guess you mean the following quote?

"It was agreed upon at that time not to include AAFC records," said Joe Horrigan of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. "Whereas, when the NFL merged with the American Football League and took all [10] of its teams, the agreement included bringing along AFL records."

Tony Grossi wasn't talking about the AAFC, but the AFL.  I'm sure he will accept your apology.

a simple, "you misread pope" will do, not a condescending post from an asshat.

sorry, but the accusation of crappy reporting set me off.  Even an asshat goes overboard sometimes!

Anderson, Winslow join Cleveland Browns contingent in the Pro Bowl

Posted by Mary Kay Cabot February 04, 2008 12:55PM

And then there were six.

Browns quarterback Derek Anderson and tight end Kellen Winslow learned today that they'll be joining four of their teammates in Honolulu for the Pro Bowl.

Anderson replaces New England quarterback Tom Brady and Winslow replaces San Diego tight end Antonio Gates. They'll join receiver Braylon Edwards, returner Josh Cribbs, left tackle Joe Thomas and longsnapper Ryan Pontbriand.

Please act like responsible young men.

Thank you!

ahh, nothing like going perfect in a league of eight teams....... I'm not sure where the PD's crappy reporting gets "10 teams"

actually there were only seven teams! (pardon my cut&paste): The league consist of 7 teams Baltimore Colts, Buffalo Bills, Chicago Hornets, Los Angeles Dons, New York Yankees, San Francisco 49ers, and the Cleveland Browns. (keep in mind there were only 10 teams in the nfl so that ain't much different).

even more remarkable than the browns winning all 4 of 4 of the short lived aafc league's championships was that they did it from the their very first season. who wins anything in the first season of existence? the 27-0-2 win streak is no joke either.

stil, most impressive of all is that you cant really discount that aafc league, the existing nfl tried to, yet after the merger in 1950 the browns immediately won the nfl championship. in your face nfl! ha. the browns then they went on to win three more and to be pretty well dominant in the nfl too up until 1966.

unfortunately of course, after paul brown's ouster the end of that long run coincided with the first years of the superbowl. oh well -- what can you say?

AAFC Champions: (all 4 of 4)

1946, 1947, 1948, 1949

NFL Champions: (5)

1945 (rams), 1950, 1954, 1955, 1964

There were 8 teams in '46, 47, and '48.  In 1949, the Brooklyn Dodgers merged with the Yankees.

Browns cornerback Leigh Bodden called an ornery celebrity on 1st day of trial

Tuesday, February 05, 2008

Leila Atassi - Plain Dealer Reporter

A prosecutor on Monday described Browns cornerback Leigh Bodden as an ornery sports celebrity who acted as if he were above the law.

As Bodden's trial began in Cleveland Municipal Court, the prosecutor said that in an incident in September the defendant cursed at police, drove backward on a one-way street and defied "No Parking" signs at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

Browns' Winslow wants a new deal

Browns tight end Kellen Winslow told Sirius NFL Radio Thursday that he wants to renegotiate his contract.

Kellen, you're eye candy, but now I'm starting to think you're a pez dispenser.

KW2, let me ask the following:

What were the circumstances that led to your contract being renegotiated?

Who needs to take responsibility for those actions?

Be happy with the 4 million you're gauranteed along with the performance-based incentives.

Love your "I'm a soldier" attitude and the way you look in the white uniform, but bring it down a notch!!  aiight!

PS.....PLEASE PLEASE do not get injured in Hawaii!

I received this email from the Cleveland Browns.  Some of you may be interested in filling it out so that more events can potentially take place at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

Tony Grossi: Derek Anderson's Pro Bowl performance continues unsettling trend

Derek Anderson's performance in the Pro Bowl was a preview of what may have happened if the Browns had made the playoffs. It could have been a train wreck.

I wasn't impressed either.

Quinn part of rowdy group outside Columbus bar, witness says

Posted by Aaron Marshall February 13, 2008 06:12AM

Cleveland Browns quarterback Brady Quinn was part of a group of men shouting insults at gay passers-by outside a Columbus bar early on New Year's Day, according to a 9-1-1 call made to police.

The call at 2:35 a.m. came from Seth Harris, who reported that he encountered the group in front of La Fogata Grill at 790 North High St. The Mexican restaurant is next door to the Union Cafe Bar + Food, one of Columbus' most popular gay bars in the gay-friendly Short North neighborhood.

More, including the 911 call, at http://blog.cleveland.com/plaindealer/2008/02/brady_quinn_part_of_rowdy_grou.html

ummm.

We'll I'm not happy that Brady was there and that his friends used bad judgment, but lets hear his side of the story.

Silence for six weeks?  Not a good management or PR decision.

I'm just waiting for gay rumors to resurface.

If anyone's feeling particularly masochistic, read through the comments on cleveland.com following the story.

Oh I cant wait until the Football: Battle for Ohio thread starts to heat up again!

This news went under the radar because of the Cavaliers big trade news.

Browns, Lewis agree on three-year deal

Indianapolis - Browns running back Jamal Lewis wants to finish his career in Cleveland. Now he'll have a chance to do just that.

Lewis, 28, agreed Thursday to a three-year contract through 2010, the Browns announced. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Lewis made $5 million last season, including $1.5 million in incentives. The contract probably enables him to equal or exceed last year's salary.

YEAH!!!!!

Good. This is more important than signing Anderson. If we didn't get Lewis back, we'd be screwed. Looks like Anderson will be signed soon and then the free agency starts (and that will be the most interesting point of the offseason).

Great news.

BTW, Mary Kay Cabot (what a pretty dollface!!) had a little typo in this sentence in her last paragraph....

In 2003, Lewis was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year after rushing for 2,066 yards, second-most in NFL history behind Eric Dickerson's 2,105 in 1994.

It's actually 1984. Dickerson had retired in 1993.

wow i cannot believe i just read that... might have been a terrorist.  hahahahaha

This should be a good year for Cleveland sports once again...  Browns rule and Nati sucks so I'm happy..

Do you think Anderson will be a Brown next season?

Cleveland Browns officially tender QB Anderson while contract talks continue

Posted by Mary Kay Cabot, Plain Dealer Reporter February 28, 2008 11:34AM

The Browns have tendered quarterback Derek Anderson the high offer of $2.562 million as a restricted free agent, general manager Phil Savage said today.

I hope so.  they have much to prove.

Secondly, if BQ was promoted to starting QB, where would he find the time to do commercials?!

It's Brady time!

Why losing Derek Anderson is not such a bad thing

Posted by Tony Grossi February 28, 2008 12:46PM

Phil Savage believes that if Derek Anderson does not accept the Browns' three-year contract offer by midnight tonight, he will sign with another team in free agency.

Does FA start at midnight tonight??

Does FA start at midnight tonight??

I think so or at 12:01 PM PST.

^Is that only restricted FA though?

^ Daven Holly and Kris Griffin are also RFA.

There are a few UFAs, the biggest names being Gary Baxter and Simon Fraiser.

I hope so.  they have much to prove.

Two words.  Peyton Manning.

Browns trade for Pack DL Williams

Posted by Tony Grossi February 29, 2008 00:57AM

The Browns acquired Green Bay defensive lineman Corey Williams in a surprise trade after midnight this morning.

Williams, 27, supposedly was taken off the free-agent market when the Packers gave him the franchise tag of $6.3 million. But they shied from investing long term in the fifth-year player and actively shopped him late in the week.

Oh true, but during the day, I see second string QB, BQ in more commercials (or advertorials) as than PM in his early years.  BQ was all over the place during the SB and PB.  His agent is earning his salary.

QB Anderson agrees to deal with Browns By TOM WITHERS, AP Sports Writer

Cleveland Browns quarterback Derek Anderson wasn't a free agent for long.

Anderson has agreed to a multiyear contract to stay with the Browns, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract had not been completed.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080229/ap_on_sp_fo_ne/fbn_browns_anderson

I'm a fan of the trade for Corey Williams.  Now, I'd like to see us add some depth behind the starters:  R. Smith, S. Smith, and Williams.

^^ I hope that they trade Anderson and let the Quinn era begin!

^^The Browns need to get some playing time out of Brady Quinn before his contract runs out.  Why would they not start Quinn now?  Does management really want to have a season where they make Quinn the starter sometime mid-season and then just hope-to-Jove that the team can get back in rhythm with a new quarterback?

Just hang it out there right now.  BQ for QB!

Quinn is gonna ride the pine because DA won 10 games.. that's why Quinn won't get playing time.

So the Browns are also getting some stud DT from the Lions in a trade for Bodden and a 3rd rounder?

His name is Shaun Rogers, he's 28, 2x Pro-bowler, and will play NT for us.  Considering what we gave up, I think it's a great move.  We sured up our D-line without having to do it through "prospects" in the draft.  We know what we have, two franchised D-lineman.  I like Bodden, I think he's a good player, but I feel it's easier to find good late draft/undrafted corners (like Bodden was himself) rather than trying to find d-linemen then.  E. Wright and either Daven Holly (if resigned) or Brandon McDonald right now could play the other corner.  Plus, Bodden has been injury prone as of late, might as well get rid of him while he has value.

What if Brady Quinn had started for the Browns in 2007, threw 29 touchdowns to 19 interceptions, won 10 games and played in the Pro Bowl? Wouldn't we be hailing this kid as a hero?

Of course we would!

So why are fans so quick to bench or trade Derrick Anderson for doing the same thing? Because he's not a rookie? Well, DA played in only six games before his first game for the Browns in 2007. He wasn't much more than a rookie experience-wise before his 2007 season. Give the guy a break!!

So why are fans so quick to bench or trade Derrick Anderson for doing the same thing?

Because he's not as much of a looker for the ladies.

That doesn't explain why guys are "hot" for Brady!

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Shaun Rogers is so disappointing coming from a lions fan.

Some weeks (generally early in the season), the guy continually amazes you with what he can do. But, he's got bad knees, a horrible work ethic and generally is terribly out of shape. By the end of the season he could only play about one down per series for a quarter or two. By the end of the game, he was useless.

check out the horrible downward trend in his statistics: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/stats?playerId=2609
