April 27, 200916 yr Here's the deal with this draft as I look at it. Unlike in most years, the disparity in talent between the top 30 or so players was not that great. There were no elite level players that were head and shoulders above the rest. Therefore, trading out of the top 5 was a smart move because it saved us millions (with an "s") in guaranteed salary to our top pick without a significant, if any, drop off in talent. We needed to upgrade the center position and did that. Mack is a big, athletic center who is smart enough (academic heisman award winner) to make all the calls at the line of scrimage. He actually has the ability to snap the ball and pull around the guard on running plays.... a la Demontri Dawson for the Steelers' teams of years past. The guy is 6'3 310 and runs the 40 yd dash in under 5 seconds. That's sick. I have not seen the film, but a friend of mine who did told me he handled Meluaga (sp?) when they played (both Pac-10 players). Playing in the AFC North against nose tackles like Casey Hampton and Haloti Ngata makes upgrading the Center position a priority. Fraley was never supposed to be more than a stop-gap after Bentley's injury. The next two picks were big, physical recievers who can hold a block downfield. Neither are burners but neither are slow either. Robiskie ran the 40 just under 4.5 and Massaqoui ran the same as Jerry Rice did (4.6). Robiskie's hands are outstanding... Massaquoi has a history of drops but supposedly corrected that issue this past year. With Mangini's conservative physical power running game approach to offense, these two were solid picks and should compete for playing time right away. I don't know much about the third 2nd round selection, but early indications are that he was somewhat of a reach at that point. They probably took him because he will provide the physical presence at the OLB spot that Wimbley and Alex Hall do not. He bench pressed 225 pounds 35 times during pre-draft workouts but only ran a 4.8 in the 40. However, he ran much faster in the 20 yard shuttle, a more telling test for a LB IMO. The second day was solid as well. The LB from USC should be a special teams ace right from the get-go. The two cornerbacks are bigger and more physical than what we have now in Wright and McDonald but not as skilled. The second corner taken might be switched to safety because his speed is questionable. Finally, James Davis was as good of a 6th round pick that you could have hoped for. He is a big, physical back. Does not have the speed that Jamal Lewis once played with, but similar in style and should be able to learn from the veteran. Nice pick-up but seems to make the Noah Herron addition somewhat redundant. Overall, I give the Browns a solid B on this draft. If Coleman and Abram (two of the players acquired from the Jets) turn out to be starters, I would bump them up to an A.

You need a lot of good role players and players that buy into a system to build a good team. Mangini knows that it will take at least two seasons to put together a good team. I think that he's just putting together the foundation. Drafting the shiny new qb prospect sure looks good on ESPN, but you'd have to sink a lot of money and time into him before you'd ever know if he's the saviour. I see no need to start all over again with developing a new qb when we don't even know if BQ will be what we all hoped.

Yeah right. The logical next step of "nobody wants to pick in the top 10" is that the value on those picks has dropped and maybe next year's first has become an unreasonable price for one. May 16, 200916 yr I am a huge fan of everything Mangini has done thus far... I think he has taken the steps necessary to return us to respectability. I like what I see so far as Mangenius' priorities: 1. An emphasis on both lines. As it always should have been. I think Mangini (a former lineman) understands this, as reflected in his first draft pick and winning over Rogers (our best player). 2. Remove all head cases/non-team oriented players. Winslow is gone. Bucs will regret that trade and especially that ridiculous contract. If he can move Edwards, I'm for it..and will take whatever we can... 3. Obtain roster depth...not there yet but we will be....trading down for more picks was smart. Simply put, in an average NFL season too many injuries occur to rely only on your first stringers

Also, we played the last 6 games with two quarterbacks who may never get another snap in the NFL again, let alone be on an active roster this year. Plus the tough schedule, plus the ineffective coaching..... I think with the new coaching staff and the roster changes thus far, we're a 6-7 win team. That's not great, but it's also not 30 (article linked above) or 32 (Peter King at SI).

May 18, 200916 yr The key to me is how the secondary plays. Even with improved DL play last year, Brandon McDonald was still a free 40 yard TD pass. Also, how the rookie receivers play. I don't expect pro-bowl years, but having a second option to Edwards is huge, we forget that Stallworth was a non-factor last year, literally.

June 16, 200915 yr I tend to believe DUI laws are getting out of control, but I agree that this sentence is way too light. Way too light. I'd prefer the ones who kill people get nailed to the wall, while the .081 people busted at quasi-constitutional DUI checkpoints be treated a little more reasonably.

Both were in the wrong here, but i would say driving a car while under the influence is a lot more serious of an offense than someone jay walking, although in every case the vehicle is going to win (damage wise) over a human in a collision. Ive had pals with 2 DUI offenses go to jail for 14 and 21 days, and they didnt even hit anyone. To me this is more of a case of Who the defendant is rather than what he did. Oh and the undisclosed money that Donte gave to the family probably went a loooooong way as well.

July 25, 200915 yr Just thought I would post this great photo from a book I used to have about Browns history. It came out in 1972. Look at this...when the game was REAL..and DIRTY!!! Kind of difficult to post as it was a book! In fact, I have more fun watching old NFL highlights from the 60's on You Tube, than today's products...especially the Browns. I can't stomach what I witnessed last season...Hope you Browns fans enjoy the photo!

August 4, 200915 yr No peeps= good. remember last year there was something on ESPN EVERY week about the browns, whether is was staph, quitting, pieces of meat, injuries, etc. Since Mangini has taken over its been all business and no subplots. Im loving it, and as a result the fans have kept quiet and just go about getting ready for the season.
