I said 6 wins or less.  But by that, I mean 6-10.  Which says that I am more optimistic about this year's team than I was at this time last year about last year's team.  I predicted 4-12 last year.  At least it seems we're headed in the right direction.

you and 3231 were very close.  I was hoping for 8-8 and that is what i'm hoping for this year.

You know what?!  I'm just about tired your lil ass today!  LMAO!

Unless you KNOW the answer, then there's going to be varying degrees of hope involved in your choice. ;)

My predictions are:

> First, I question whether the division is going to be as tough as it was last year. I really wonder if Cincinnati's division title last year was a one-shot deal. I have never been impressed with Carson Palmer. I think the Ravens will be the division winners. They look stronger on both sides of the ball. The Steelers' don't appear as strong offensively with Roethlisberger suspended 4-6 games and Holmes gone. They still have a productive Ward and Miller plus a maturing Wallace carrying the receiving load. The Steelers defense still looks solid if Polamalu can stay healthy.

> I predict the Browns secondary will be a strength this year. We added CB Sheldon Brown (9 years with the Eagles, 5 INTs last year) in the offseason and I like CB Eric Wright, who is getting better every year (4 INTs last year). And I think at least one of the draft picks for the secondary (Ward, Haden, Assante, etc) is going to emerge in his first year as a big hitter.

> Delhomme isn't going to be the starting QB by the end of the season. He couldn't perform well with two 1,100-yard runners last year. Either because of injury or ineffectiveness, he will give way to Seneca Wallace who, if he plays like he did in the eight games he started in 2008, will not relinquish the starting job for a while.

> If he still has anything left, Bobby Engram will provide some early stability to the receiving corps until Robiskie can get his game legs back and Mitchell can learn the NFL. But between Massaquoi and Cribbs there's plenty of speed on the outside (Mitchell may surprise too as his game speed is quite a bit faster than his 4.4 Combine speed!), with Watson in the middle of the field plus Harrison and Hardesty out of the backfield -- I think we've got enough decent pass-catchers to the spread the field and throw the ball to. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Hardesty can do running AND receiving.

What's making the start of this season so much fun for me is that there are so many unknowns, so it will be lots of fun to see what these new pieces and parts can do together on the field. Plus the people we picked up halfway through last season made a big difference in how the team played toward the end. Add all these things together and there's lots of reasons for hope. So that's why I picked 9-7.

Sounds like they're already talking about moving Joe Haden to safety.  Not good.

I think they'll get about six or seven wins.  Eight or nine isn't beyond the realm of possibility, but I think that just about everything has to go right for that to happen.

Where did you hear this? They drafted two safeties already.

Considering his age, I think Sheldon Brown would be better at safety. They may make that move, but not right away. Not until Haden gets more comfortable in the pros.

7-9 would be a great year in my opinion.  It really depends on how those games are won and loss that will really tell us if we are on the right track.

^Exactly.  First and foremost, I am looking for comptetiveness.  I would rather lose 16 tightly contested games, than win 4 and lose 12 in blowout fashion.

I know, but the question is really then "How do you think the Browns will do this year?"  Plus, I was on a roll making MTS's blood pressure rise yesterday. :)  But if we are really talking about what we hope the Browns are this year, I'm hoping for 16-0 and Super Bowl rings.

It has been so bad that 7-9 actually sounds good.

7-9 Considering we are going into a season with a stop-gap as a QB we need to view progress in context.  If the young receivers make strides, the newish secondary begins to gel and other players step up at positions around the field we could be in good shape.  I still think the front office intends to take a heavy look at Jake Locker/Ryan Mallet this coming draft but who knows.

Only two more draft picks to go. I'm sure they'll be in camp by the time the veterans report this weekend...

Just through the grapevine on message boards after his mediocre performance in OTAs thus far.

hes a vet,  lets see how they do in actual training camp.  OTA's are more for understanding the playbook, assignments, etc.  Not surprised at his "mediocre" play, he is learning a new system.  If he still looks like cr@p in a couple weeks then there is an issue.

I'll give him a chance.  I wasn't happy that they drafted him in the first place, but I do like his athleticism.  I'd just be concerned if he does have to move to safety.

I think you two are talking about two different players.  Both Brown and Haden will begin the season at corner.  We may have an issue though at free safety (Asante, Ward and Elam are all really strong safeties) which may cause a switch for one of those guys, but I doubt it.  I am pretty sure that Magini's defense can be executed with the safeties we have.

Haden is going to have to have a real good camp to unseat Wright. I don't have a problem with Wright's pass coverage, but he needs more work on his run defense. If Haden can handle both of those basic assignments at the pro level at this very early stage of his career, then he'll unseat Wright. But I predict he'll start as a nickel back. Who knows -- Haden may unseat Brown at some point and move him to safety. But Brown seems to be vulnerable to quarterbacks like Romo who are good at looking off DBs -- not a good characteristic in a safety!

FINALLY! All this guaranteed money for draft picks who have yet to prove themselves. I hope next year's NFL-NFLPA deal eliminates this and instead has more of a pay-for-production scale in it....

Cleveland Browns top pick Joe Haden agrees to 5 yr, $50 million deal, with $26 million guaranteed

CLEVELAND -- Browns top pick Joe Haden agreed to terms on a five-year deal worth $50 million, with $26 million guaranteed, Haden's agent Malik Shareef told the Plain Dealer.

Haden missed the morning practice but will try to be on the field for the evening session.

"Joe is excited,'' said Shareef. "We'd like to thank the Browns for all their hard work on this.''

Shareef said the goal all along was to get Haden into camp on time -- and he missed only one fullsquad practice.

Well im glad that it will give Jerome Harrison a better shot because he really deserves one. Hardesty has been injury prone so you had to expect something like this to happen eventually. I thought it was annoying when people where saying that Jerome Harrison hasn't proven himself in the NFL yet and that he shouldn't start and that Hardesty should, which makes no sense since Hardesty really hasn't proven himself. I hope Hardesty gets healthy and can be a strong second back and that he can hold up once the pads come on.

Uh yeah. What do they expect? What has Hardesty done in the NFL yet? Harrison rushed for 862 yards and caught 34 passes last season. If Hardesty does that in his rookie season, we'll be jumping for joy. Harrison hasn't got many chances playing behind Jamal Lewis who had back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons in 2007 & 2008. Yet Harrison made the most of his opportunities by averaging 4.8 yards per rush over his four-year career.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Harrison was going to get an opportunity to play regardless of Hardesty's health.  You need at least two backs to be successful in the NFL, so even if Hardesty were "starting," Harrison was still going to get his carries and still have a chance to run for 862 yards.

In the 5 games that Jerome Harrison started and ran the ball for over 15 times which is normal for a starting back he ran for 734 yards. Give him a whole season as the feature back and he should easily get over 1000 yards per year. Hell if he could keep that pace (which is not likely) he would have 2202 yards after 15 games which would beat the record for most rushing yards in a season. So you can't expect him to only produce 862 yards in a season when he was never actually given a full season.

Exactamundo.

By no means am I criticizing his skills.  I'm just saying that even if Hardesty stays healthy and gets a load of carries, there are still going to be opportunities for other guys, like Harrison, to step in and produce.  I'd rather have a two-headed monster than be glad about the injury of one of the guys because I like the other one better.

I agree, im hoping he recovers and and can stay healthy and be a strong second back.

I am not really sure where this team is going to end up this year record wise but with the improved O-line and Vickers lead block any running back (Harrison, Hardesty, etc) is going to have a much easier time than 2 or 3 years ago. The blocking was so bad before that the only thing that opened up the running game at all in 2007 was DA's deep downfield threat.

All of these guys are young and fairly quick and with the blocking we have 4 or 5 yds a carry is always legitimate possibility, so the D will have to respect the run first which should help the passing game tremendously. Plus all of the guys out of the backfield have pretty good hands.

I think what I am trying to say is we should have a real life balanced functioning offense for the first time in years with the run threat opening up the passing game.  Should be exciting.

PS Can tony Grossi be anymore bitter at the demise of Camp Romeo? Did they used to hand feed him grapes in the press room or something? Did Mangini do something to him back in the day that he holds a grudge about? Or maybe I am now spoiled by Pluto's and  B Windy's coverage and realize that TG is a major hack?

B Windy?

Precisely.  Carolina had this last year, two RB's over 1100 yards.  Yet because they kept Delhomme when he was throwing passes only to the other team they finished 8-8.  After watching Jake crumble in the '08 playoffs and last year I feel bad for every Browns fan.  Hopefully he will get pulled quickly and SW will play.

There was an interesting article in the PD about how Carolinia tried to switch to a more rigid rule based passing strategy last year than the loosey goosey "Farve-esque" play by your gut style that Delhomme was used to. F'd his head up, I hope he can recover. He doesn't need to put up huge numbers, just hand the ball off and get a first down when we need it. This is a team built for running first.

And Mangini is going to tolerate a "Farve-esque" play by your gut style??  I know elements of the WC offense allow for more creativity, as there is a lot more play action, so that could help.  But they are still going to play a ball control, run based offense.  So Delhomme wont have time to get into a rhythm.  I will say this though if he gets hot he can put the ball just about anywhere.  Also, need to make sure he keeps his head on straight with the young WR's, hes a bit of a hot head.

An interesting article from ESPN talking about the Browns' "athlete" players, Josh Cribbs and Seneca Wallace:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp10/columns/story?columnist=schefter_adam&id=5432153

Looks like Adam Schefter got a bit of an eye-opener when he visited the Browns. I saw his report this morning on ESPN, and while he acknowledged the Browns have more holes to fill they've done a lot of good things in the offseason. And he saw what I see -- that Seneca Wallace has a lot of great potential as a QB. Schefter sees it in combination with Cribbs in the running the Wildcat and Cyclone offenses. I see Wallace's potential to simply run routine plays, but he and Cribbs become explosive and incredibly unpredictable when on the field at the same time. If they can make work consistently from week-to-week, I think they could change offenses (and, thus, defenses too) for many years to come.

Goodell still reviewing suspension cases on two Cleveland Browns players

08-05-2010 07:29 PM EDT

BEREA, Ohio (Associated Press) -- NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell still hasn't decided on the fate of two Cleveland Browns players facing suspensions.

Shaun Rogers and Robaire Smith were arrested three months apart when stopped by airport security for carrying weapons.

"Both cases are still under review by our staff," Goodell said Thursday during his visit with Browns players, coaches and fans. "I don't have any plans to specifically sit down with either one of them."

Goodell is certain that some penalty will be enforced.

Braylon isn't with the Browns because he is a cancer. The only time you tolerate a cancer is when he can make plays. Braylon couldn't make plays. Bye bye Braylon. Take your Detroit-born "flashy style" someplace where style means more than substance.

I think the Braylon-ectomy went a long way to curing the Browns cancer. Was he a Savage pick or a Davis pick? I forget?

Maybe Cincy can pick up BE next year after the Jets dump him? He has an assult conviction. He should fit right in

For Saturday's game:

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2010/08/cleveland_browns_first_depth_c.html

Cleveland Browns first depth chart posted

Offense: WR Mohamed Massaquoi, LT Joe Thomas, LG Eric Steinbach, C Alex Mack, RG Floyd Womack, RT John St. Clair, TE Benjamin Watson, WR Brian Robiskie, QB Jake Delhomme, FB Lawrence Vickers, RB Jerome Harrison.

Defense: LE Robaire Smith, NT Ahytba Rubin, RE Kenyon Coleman, OLB Matt Roth, ILB D'Qwell Jackson, ILB Chris Gocong, OLB Scott Fujita, LCB Eric Wright, RCB Sheldon Brown, S Abram Elam, S T.J. Ward.

So I'm looking at the poll and wondering where people are getting 8, 9, 10 or more wins from this Cleveland Browns team. So I pull up the schedule to go through it game by game to see how many wins I think we can realistically expect.

Feel free to play along.

1 Sep 12 CLE @ TB - WIN!

2 Sep 19 KC @ CLE - WIN! If we don't win our first two it could be a long year.

3 Sep 26 CLE @ BAL - LOSS... they're stacked. No chance in Baltimore.

4 Oct 03 CIN @ CLE - LOSS... also stacked. Only chance to win is if Harrison and Hardesty have 300 yards combined rushing.

5 Oct 10 ATL @ CLE - WIN!

6 Oct 17 CLE @ PIT - LOSS... they're down, but they're still Pittsburgh. Could be Ben's first game back.

7 Oct 24 CLE @ NO - LOSS... no explanation needed.

8 Bye

9 Nov 07 NE @ CLE - LOSS... this game will be close, but we don't have the poise to win it.

10 Nov 14 NYJ @ CLE - LOSS... This Jets team is even better then last years. Only hope is for Braylon to fumble about 4 times.

11 Nov 21 CLE @ JAC - WIN! Two not very good teams battle it out. We should win this one.

12 Nov 28 CAR @ CLE - WIN! See above.

13 Dec 05 CLE @ MIA - LOSS... Miami's just better than Cleveland. Especially at home.

14 Dec 12 CLE @ BUF - WIN! They should stink.

15 Dec 19 CLE @ CIN - LOSS... Cincinnati could be playing to clinch the division this week.

16 Dec 26 BAL @ CLE - LOSS... maybe they will rest all their starters if they've already clinched? Probably not.

17 Jan 02 PIT @ CLE - WIN! They'll steal an emotional victory to "save the season" from an emotionally drained and dying Steelers team.

So there you have it. I predict 7-9. HOWEVER, I think we might be able to steal one at home from the Patriots and split the series with Cincinnati or Baltimore. I won't call you crazy for predicting 8 or 9 wins... just very optimistic.  I will call you crazy if you say 10 or more wins.

Damn we are thin at WR.

Loss (mostly Lawson's):

Browns defensive back Gerard Lawson at practice following arrest on DUI charge

08-09-2010 01:35 PM EDT |By TOM WITHERS, AP Sports Writer

BEREA, Ohio (Associated Press) -- Cleveland Browns defensive back Gerard Lawson returned to practice Monday, one day after he was arrested on charges that include driving under the influence.

Lawson was arrested Sunday morning after he hit a parked car downtown, and sheriff's deputies saw him leaving an accident scene in the popular downtown Warehouse District. He posted bond and was released from jail. No injuries were reported.

Browns coach Eric Mangini met with Lawson and said they had a "good conversation." Mangini did not say if Lawson apologized.
