August 31, 201014 yr Exactly I feel they try to protect the quarteback too much and that th qb slide should be removed. If he wants to take the chance and run down field against the defence then the defender should be able to give him a nice tackle. But the tackle suh made would be illegal against any position and was bad to the extend that a fine or a 1 game suspension would be fitting.
August 31, 201014 yr Good news.... Browns nose tackle Shaun Rogers avoids NFL suspension on gun charges 08-31-2010 03:29 PM EDT |By TOM WITHERS, AP Sports Writer BEREA, Ohio (Associated Press) -- Cleveland Browns nose tackle Shaun Rogers will not be suspended by the NFL for carrying a loaded gun into an airport. The league said Rogers will be fined a one-game check _ roughly $400,000 _ for violating its personal conduct policy. The former Pro Bowler, who has not practiced this summer because of a leg injury that ended his season after 11 games in 2009, is appealing the decision. Police said Rogers carried a semiautomatic handgun in a carry-on bag into Hopkins International Airport in April. He reached a deal with prosecutors last month and was ordered to enter diversion program to avoid trial on the weapons charge. August 31, 201014 yr Worth reading.... A New Mangini: Cleveland's complicated coach has loosened up in second season with Browns 08-31-2010 03:52 PM EDT |By TOM WITHERS, AP Sports Writer BEREA, Ohio (Associated Press) -- On one of the recovery days he built into his team's training camp schedule, Eric Mangini leans back in a plush chair inside his apartment-sized office overlooking the Browns' lush practice fields, spits tobacco juice into an empty cup and lets out a hearty laugh. It's been a wonderful second summer back in Ohio for Cleveland's complicated coach. Last year, the laughter was limited. September 3, 201014 yr Kind of a yawner last night. So what did we learn from it, other than McCoy didn't want to be put on the practice squad? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 3, 201014 yr Kind of a yawner last night. So what did we learn from it, other than McCoy didn't want to be put on the practice squad? That Hardesty's knees are more fragile than my grandmother's china?
September 3, 201014 yr I didn't get to see the game. What kind of squad did Colt have around him? 1st/2nd string mix or the 3rd string/practice squad/future cuts? Colt had the usual supporting cast, tackling dummies for O-Lineman, Jake "Hot Potato" Allen, 37 year-old Bobby Engram, Mitchell at WR, a TE playing at FB, 4th & 5th string RB's (oops, now 3rd & 4th since Hardesty's done)....
September 3, 201014 yr The high snap to the Bears' QB that ended up bouncing off his helmet was pretty friggin' funny cause it happened right in front of where we were sitting. But besides that and the winning field goal with two seconds left, it definitely was a yawner. Did anyone else think they weren't gonna get that second-to-last play to end before running the clock out? I was seriously worried they botched that.
September 3, 201014 yr Did anyone else think they weren't gonna get that second-to-last play to end before running the clock out? I was seriously worried they botched that. I was definitely wondering why they were running a play, let alone one that wasn't a quick-hitter near the sidelines! September 4, 201014 yr That Hardesty's knees are more fragile than my grandmother's china? Well, we won't have to worry about him for a year with his torn ACL -- sheesh. Good thing we weren't desperate for RBs. But I feel real bad for the kid. I could see he had a tear in his eye when he was on the sidelines after the injury Thursday. EDIT: No surprises in yesterday's cuts. Another 15 to cut today. I hope they can pick up another defensive lineman from another team in the next couple of days. Here's Friday's cuts by the Browns.... Receiver Jake Allen, offensive lineman Casey Bender, defensive back Coye Francies, tight end Joel Gamble, offensive tackle Joel Reinders and receiver Syndric Steptoe. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 4, 201014 yr Here's some notable cuts by other teams: Seahawks WR TJ Houshmanzadeh (79 catches last year but is the victim of Pete Carroll's youth movement) http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5529209 Patriots DL Damione Lewis (22.5 sacks in his 10-yr career but couldn't beat out backup DL Gerard Warren) http://sports.espn.go.com/boston/nfl/news/story?id=5529147 Cowboys S Pat Watkins (good special teams cover man but earn $1+ million) http://sports.espn.go.com/dallas/nfl/columns/story?columnist=watkins_calvin&id=5526830 Redskins RB Willie Parker (pro-bowl runner with Steelers but lost out to Larry Johnson) http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5531095 Packers OL-several people (Green Bay may deal its surplus of offensive linemen) http://www.wausaudailyherald.com/article/20100904/WDH02/9040499/Packers-may-deal-surplus-of-O-linemen More later. Given the Walrus' connection to Seattle, I hope he makes a move to get Houshmanzadeh. The price certainly is right (the Seahawks have to pay TJ whatever his new team does not)! EDIT: I've been scouring the ESPN site, but I'm just not seeing very many quality defensive guys on the bubble. Most of the quality expendables seem to be on the offensive side of the ball. September 4, 201014 yr Brandon McDonald is gone, a victim of the Browns new-found depth in the secondary... http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2010/09/cleveland_browns_brandon_mcdon_2.html EDIT: The Seahawks have released WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh. If true will the Browns pick him up? Should they, given his "cancerous" affect on locker rooms? http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5531522&campaign=rss&source=NFLHeadlines Packers have released 315-pound DT Anthony Toribio and hope to put him on the practice squad if he clears waivers http://www.kffl.com/hotw/nfl "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 5, 201014 yr With our wideouts, how can we not take a look at TJ? I have never heard of any 'cancerous' effect he has in the locker room.
September 5, 201014 yr Do a Google search on "Houshmandzadeh, cancer" or use "outspoken" instead of cancer. OK, so 12 linebackers and three corners?? Stay tuned. Something else is cooking. September 5, 201014 yr Wow, DA is going to start in Arizona. I guess that worked out pretty well for him, I hope it works out.
September 6, 201014 yr CBS Sports is reporting that the Browns have no interest in TJ Houshmandzadeh and that they have picked up scrub CB Quincy Butler who was just waived by the St. Louis Rams. Looks like Mike Adams may be playing more CB than safety this fall. CBS is also reporting the Browns signed six players to the practice squad, all of whom were waived by the team on Saturday. They are OL Paul Fanaika and Pat Murray, DBs DeAngelo Smith and Larry Asante and DL Travis Ivey and Brian Sanford. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/rapid-reports/team/CLE CB Brandon McDonald has joined QB Derek Anderson in Phoenix... http://www.azcentral.com/sports/cardinals/articles/2010/09/05/20100905arizona-cardinals-cyril-obiozor-brandon-mcdonald.html "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 7, 201014 yr Great.... Houshmandzadeh ended up with the Ravens. That's a formidable receiving corps. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 7, 201014 yr Great.... Houshmandzadeh ended up with the Ravens. That's a formidable receiving corps. Ravens have three #2 WR's, one is 36, one is 32, and the other is injury prone, we'll see how it works out.. I'm more impressed with their TE's.
September 7, 201014 yr Remember... Jerry Rice was around 42/3 when he finally retired. Steve Largent played until 36 and was fairly effective. (granted, they are exceptions) These other guys we're talking about are no Jerry or Steve, but being mid 30 does not automatically rule you out to play the game and be effective. If you take good care of yourself, you can last a long time. Where they have given up perhaps some of their physical vitality, they make up for with skill and brains...and such can take the youngsters to school. Not to mention their impact on the new players for the leadership component. Lots of fast young guys with no brains who cannot catch or run a decent pattern worth a lick! Braylon anyone? Look what the "poor old Celtics" did to the Cavs two times.

Not to mention their impact on the new players for the leadership component. Lots of fast young guys with no brains who cannot catch or run a decent pattern worth a lick! Braylon anyone? Look what the "poor old Celtics" did to the Cavs two times. My primary point was that all three of these WR's have historically been #2 WR's, in other words, drawing another teams best coverage package, best CB, etc., and age and injury being a secondary concern. I guess the exception would be Housh, where he was the #1 one year on a bad Seattle team, but his production dropped way off. I like Boldin, but again, he's received single coverage most of his NFL career and I can't remember him making it through an entire season. Mason is the definition of a #2 WR, but he is 36, and 36 is a lot more than 26 in the NFL. So I'll stick with the "we'll see" approach with the Ravens WR's, but I do like how the Browns match up with them; Brown on Boldin, Wright on Housh, Haden on Mason when in the nickel. Now, if the Browns could just stop their running game...
September 10, 201014 yr I just noticed that every game this season is on a Sunday at 1:00pm. That is I suppose an indication of where they are as a team but I love that time slot. Nothing better than waking up on a lazy Sunday and watching the game early in the day. Not to mention, it makes it easier to actually go to a game for me.
September 10, 201014 yr MK that is so true. Usually I roll into the house around 6 after a one o'clock game giving me plenty of time to recover for work in the morning. The 4 o'clock games are OK but the 8/8:30 games are way too rough the next morning. My forecast for this season: Mostly optimistic with partial clouds of realistic expectations. Go Browns! I am getting excited for Sunday. WTF was up with that Ray Lewis Old Spice commercial last night?
September 10, 201014 yr nice to hear him growl this out on sportscenter this morning! swami sez: browns 19 tb 16 r u ready for some football?!!!
September 10, 201014 yr I am actually going to be at the game in Tampa this Sunday.... can't wait. Lucky for you, I may be out east at the winery's (normally a good thing) trying to find a TV to watch the game on . Drink lots of water it's suppose to be a scorcher down there. I need a Browns avatar pronto!
September 10, 201014 yr Webster Slaughter! Maybe I need to find that picture of Joe Thomas fishing off of the stadium?
September 12, 201014 yr Delhomme throws 2 interception and looked bad overall, Hillis fumbled twice, and Cribbs fumbled on a return and for the rest of the game he put us in bad field position. Harrison runs a 39 yard run and then never really gets a chance to do it again. And then Mangini doesn't call a timeout at the end of the game. Doesn't make much sense.
September 13, 201014 yr I dont know who is worse CBC or mrnyc with their "vintage" avatars. LOL Would you prefer a Timmy Couch or Brady Quinn? How about Jeff Garcia? No comment on yesterdays game. Let's just say I am glad I decided to take a bike tour of the wineries in Geneva...
September 13, 201014 yr It was great I got the 20 minutes of complete disgust watching the 4th quarter at the DeBonne bar, but didn't ruin the rest of my day.
September 13, 201014 yr Different team. Different season. Same result. We out-played the Bucs big-time for three quarters. Doesn't matter if you have better talent when you can't hang on to the ball and when you can't play defense in the fourth quarter. I counted this game as a win in the pre-season. I revise my prediction for the season to 7-9. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 13, 201014 yr 3 things to work on it practice: - Throwing the ball away is always better than throwing it to the other team - Don't fumble - When the other team fumbles, the ball squirts out away from the scrum, and the entire opposing team is on the ground tied up in the scrum, PICK THE BALL UP AND RUN!
September 13, 201014 yr I just thought they would have a much more vibrant offense with Seneca Wallace and Josh Cribbs. The one play I see, Cribbs passes to Wallace. What the heck was that. Come on. Seriously, with the type of offense the Browns have on the sidelines. They may want to take some notes on how Michigan runs the ball, and throw Wallace and Cribbs in the backfield. Passing will do nothing for this team. Spread em' out man.
September 13, 201014 yr Is it too soon to start demanding they bring in Colt? ;-) Definitely lol. With Delhomme we actually have a chance to do something and win. With Mccoy it would be the hardest game to watch in the history of the NFL

The offense didn't do anything after halftime, so the defense just had to keep going out there. That would wear out any defense.

September 13, 201014 yr Overall they didn't play terrible. The put together some good drives and the defense played pretty well for most of the game. The Browns just made too many critical mistakes. If Jake doesn't throw that interception at the end of the 1st half OR Hillis doesn't fumble while we're driving for a score then the Browns win that game. During the first half I was saying to myself that "a lot will have to go wrong for the Browns to lose this game." A lot went wrong... The Bucs aren't a good team and will be lucky to win 4 games all year. The Browns really let this one go and will be kicking themselves for it later in the year.
September 13, 201014 yr The good thing is that it is usually the Browns who are 'sneaking out of the stadium with a win.' The Bucs should feel VERY fortunate to have won that game. Does anybody know what Delhomme hurt? (ankle? foot? toe?). He played terribly once he started limping.... throwing off his back foot for both of his INT's. The right side of the o-line looked terrible and I do not think they used Cribbs nearly enough. Harrison had that one big run but was bottled up on his other 8 carries. Other than that and, of course, the turnovers and game mgt blunders, I did not have any major issues with the way the team played.

It's hard to stop a score when your opponent starts a drive in their territory. I thought the defense played ok. Watching Ward rush freeman early in the game was great. On a side note, Mangini is looking a little more trim this year.
