January 2, 201312 yr Here's a thought (or my nightmare) Chip Kelly and Michael Vick together in Cleveland...... I've heard the Vick talk, too. I might have to stop rooting for the Browns if they do. To me, any individual that can strangle a dog for amusement is sick. I mean rapist/mass murderer/pedo level sick. I don't want him in this city. I don't want him near my dogs or my Dawgs.
January 2, 201312 yr ^Other than him buying a house in Strongsville? I hear he bought a Brown's ballcap, too. He must have the job. If he really was a candidate I question his passion for the game now after being out for 6 years, I'm positive he still loves it but will he have enough dedication to put the time in with these young players.

There are more than enough football reasons not to want Vick at this point without even getting into that...

His passion for the game isn't in doubt, as he works the NFL pregame for CBS. His passion for coaching declined, or at least his energy level did while his wife fought cancer. She died in 2010 and I'm sure a big piece of Bill died along with her. Perhaps Bill is ready to consider coaching again. Only he knows. January 2, 201312 yr I also wonder how Thad Lewis would perform I thought he did well given that he was just thrown in there he had poise plus he is mobile which is needed with the zone read option... Just stop. Why because I'm telling the truth?! The only mistake he had was when polumalu baited him into that int other than that he was fine because an inexperienced QB will make that mistake from time to time. The two fumbles by Gordon and Benjamin led to 2 Steelers touchdowns which were the difference in the game. For the game he went 22 of 32 which is a 69% completion rate. I believe that was a good game and showed poise in a hostile environment especially since he wasn't throwing picks left and right. I felt more confident in him leading us to victory that Weeden simply because Lewis didnt make those throws that makes your heart skip a beat that Weeden is known for. He even got compliments from Steelers players on his performance, because he and Antonio Brown switched jerseys. I'm not saying just give him the starting spot but based on his performance he DEFINITELY deserves a chance to start next year. The fact that this is given even a halfway serious consideration shows how desperately starved Browns fans are for anyone a half step above awful. He looked almost decent because Shurmur had a west coast QB for his west coast offense instead of stubbornly forcing Weeden into a WCO QB when he clearly isn't.

For some reason I don't remember hearing about that. She was from Cleveland, right?
January 3, 201312 yr Cleveland Browns' interview with Oregon's Chip Kelly expected to take place Friday CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns' interview with Oregon offensive wizard Chip Kelly is expected to take place as early as Friday in Arizona, a league source told The Plain Dealer. But Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner, who flew to Arizona on Tuesday to first interview Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton and then Kelly, know they have to move quickly. That's because the Eagles -- Banner's former team -- and the Bills have also scheduled interviews with Kelly by the end of the weekend, according to Mike Garofolo of USA Today Sports. Kelly's fourth-ranked Ducks will play No. 5 Kansas State Thursday night in the Fiesta Bowl. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2013/01/cleveland_browns_interview_wit.html#incart_hbx
January 3, 201312 yr I finally voted in the poll on top of the page. Is that cheating? Either other people did the same, or you guys know your team pretty well. I still can't believe the Bengals both lost a game to the Browns and made it to the playoffs. Better luck next year. Hopefully Weeden can hit a stride.
January 3, 201312 yr I know I'm bias since I a Bengals fan, but the Browns are a hot mess. Going into 2013 with a 29 yr old QB. Carson Palmer was washed up at 31. No depth. (A constant problem for the Bengals due to cheap ownership). Endless turnover at the top. I'm think it will take 5-10 years for the Browns to be competitive.

We are not a hot mess we were competitive in almost every game this year did much better vs. the AFC North than in the past all we need is a QB and a WR on offense and a CB on defense and we will be a 8+ win team (Which we had the chance to be this year) A hot mess would be the Jags and The Chiefs.

I think they could make the playoffs next year and with an upgrade at QB (or significant improvement by Weeden) they could make a real run. Bengals are a good team but far from dominant. Steelers and Ravens are both in decline and in need of major upgrades on defense. Browns have a great group of young talent which should carry them for another 2-3 years. It's a shame there is more turnover with head coach & GM, but Sean Payton won quickly as new coach at the Saints, so did Harbaugh in SanFran, so did Whisenhunt in Arizona.

January 3, 201312 yr I'll say this, in the NFL, more than any other pro-sport, it's not uncommon for teams to make huge changes in progress, going from 4-12 to the playoffs, in a years' time. It happens every season. Who picked Minnesota to make the playoffs this year? Finished 3-13 last year, now 10-6 with a second year QB.
January 3, 201312 yr Interesting coaching breakdown. Its has been getting progressively worse (coaching win percentage) since Schottenheimer.

Two to three years ago, I'd be hard-pressed to think of more than five Browns players who could have started on most other NFL teams. Today, I think the Browns are maybe five players away from being a Super Bowl contender. I think their offensive and defensive lines are pretty solid. I'm fine with their running back situation and tight ends (if they keep their free agents). I'm sure yet about Weeden who, even though he is 29, has played QB in only three of the past 10 years -- big difference with Carson Palmer! What the Browns need to compete for the Super Bowl if Weeden is the guy: + a capable veteran wide receiver to add to their young talent. + a speedy, foaming-at-the-mouth outside linebacker who can pressure the QB and chase down RBs. + a Joe Haden clone on the other side of the field at cornerback. + A murderous, run-stuffing safety who can also cover. + a kicker to replace Phil Dawson. And if Weeden can't perform in a shotgun, no-huddle offense more suited to his capabilities and after year of experience, then add a quarterback who can get the job done. Although you're right in that the parody in the NFL allows franchises' fortunes to change very quickly, your above example of Whisenhunt and Arizona (and really there are many similar stories) is not really what we want to see here. We want the Browns to get a coach and put together a core group of players that are going to allow this franchise to put together a sustained period of success of (hopefully) 5-7 years. The recent "turnarounds" in Tampa, Oakland, Miami, Arizona, etc., etc. is not what we want here.

January 3, 201312 yr Terry Pluto made a good point, I prefer a coach with some assistant experience like Bill O'Brian, I would even take Ken Wisenhunt (Not my top choice) but as time has gone on I have grown to like O'Brian more than Kelly just because he is an offensive coach (like kelly) BUT he has that oh so important NFL experience which sits much better with me. He also seems like a strong leader that will be able to handle a young team. I feel Kelly is much more of a gamble to me than O'Brian and that it would sit much better with me to have him as coach, especially since we won't interview Lovie Smith. Wisenhunt is my backup choice because he has much more experience out of all the coaches in the conversation not named Lovie or Andy (Norv Turner is not even being talked about with ANY team) thats my opinion and who I want.
January 3, 201312 yr Nice arguments. Thought I'd get burned at the stake. As I get ready to enjoy the Bengals playoff win tomorrow, Cleveland is one of 6(or is 7) teams in need of a HC. Of course it's more than just a HC, it's assistants, trainers, secretaries, etc. How do you think potential candidates rank the Browns compared to the other openings. Think they get their first choice? Sounds like the owner is willing to pay a premium(unlike my Bengals who charge a premium). College coaches are still too risky. Reid? That guy got personal issues. Not impress with Weeden and QB will always be the backbone of SB team. Bengals know talent. They just are't willing to pay them; starting LB for SF - Ahmad Brooks - Bengals Project. Justin Smith- too expensive(didn't really care for him). Vikings WR Simpson - dedicated years to his development. Let him walk. Houston CB - Joseph too expensive. Instead signed aging CBs. Though playing well lately. Handful of Offensive linemen. It's a long list.

Dude the Bengals before this season were a terribly inconsistent team, one year you were in the playoffs the next your were doing the same with the browns WATCHING. Even Bengals fans down at my school agreed with me and even though you guys made the playoffs you have yet to bring home the hardware and if you don't do that then you are not important at all.

Don't get me wrong though win or lose I will be cheering for the Browns EVERY Sunday, Monday, Thursday or whenever they play. We've all been let down. I've been a Browns fan since the late 70s and helped lead fax-a-letter campaigns to the NFL offices in 1995-96 to block the team's move and then to get a team back here. And this is our reward? I don't doubt Al Lerner wanted a winner here, but his kid didn't care as long as he got his NFL royalty checks. Randy Lerner promised he would own the team for 10 years which he did and then got out. So now we are finally out from under that regime to one actually wants to own a team and try to succeed. And the good things that Randy did in the last few years was to increase the value of the team so he could get a better price for it. You don't need to drink Kool-Aid until they start winning. And until they start winning, the Browns have to keep trying different things. Shurmur wasn't the answer. Is Kelly? We'll find out after a couple of years. Some say it sucks that nobody knows how the future will turn out. The future is empty. What we do today fills that emptiness. Instead, the Browns recent past is what sucks. I think it's also wonderfully exciting that we don't know what will happen because it can be different. Will it be? Watch the show and see. Someday it will improve, and only change can cause it. Nothing stays down forever. I love change! Who wants to watch a movie or read a book where nothing changes in the plot?? January 5, 201312 yr I thought my post was primarily about the Browns, but if it was a problem I apologize. I do hope Weeden improves. I'm not sold on him, and it sounds like many of you aren't, either. But you never know, I guess. It's hard to be a good team without a good quarterback. I would give an example, but it's not Browns related...oh, hell...I'm talking about the Cincinnati Bearcats. They have a good, balanced team but two mediocre QB's. Spoils everything. If Weeden's not the guy, he needs to be replaced ASAP. Can we all rejoice that the Steelers suck?
January 5, 201312 yr Maybe it's since I wasn't a browns fan in the glory days or whatever but I wouldn't mind a helmet logo but if we were to have a logo I would prefer a revised brownie elf...maybe make him look tougher. (Don't rip me apart :) )
