January 18, 201312 yr I didn't want a college coach here. I'm much more in favor of a proven Norv Turner developing the offense vs. Kelly. Anyhow, it will be interesting to keep an eye on Philly. I can already hear the pundits spinning the next Browns-Eagles hurt feelings/rivalry game. I keep hearing local commentators speaking (favorably) about getting Michael Vick as Browns QB. I could be wrong, but I see that as a PR disaster in the making. Only a very small percentage of radio callers support this idea. I know I wouldn't ever root for the Browns with Vick under center. I love my Browns, but I love my rescue Pitt Bulls even more. If the Browns bring in Vick, I will not be a fan until both Vick and Banner leaves. (They are distant cousins of the Hypno-toad, hanging with my at Fahy's in the French Quarter)

Having said that you would rather judge him on his past than to see if he's actually changed? If you were accused and convicted of a crime, did you time, wouldn't you want a people to give you a second chance?
January 18, 201312 yr If it was a one night slip up, of course. He admitted to killing 8 dogs, and ran the ring for years. He deserves his freedom, and he has the right to be employed. BUT, I don't owe him anything, and I will never cheer for him. If the Browns hire him, they lost a lifetime fan.
January 18, 201312 yr Mike Lombardi is in as the 'player personnel guy'........ and so ends the worst kept secret in the NFL
January 18, 201312 yr Former Cleveland Browns personnel executive Mike Lombardi hired as Browns Vice President of Player Personnel http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2013/01/former_cleveland_browns_person.html I hate this guy...
January 18, 201312 yr One of those things that deep down I knew would happen, but was really hoping it wouldn't.
January 18, 201312 yr Here are the records of the Browns and Raiders during Michael Lombardi's two terms as director of player personnel. He did part of one year in the same position for the Eagles in 1998 but that's not long enough to determine one's effectiveness. These two long terms are his work products, however, which show he inherited talent and then proceeded to destroy two Super Bowl-contending teams..... 1987 - Cleveland Browns -- 10-5 (1 game missed due to strike, followed 12-4 team in 1986, lost in AFC Championship to Denver in '86 and '87) 1988 - Cleveland Browns -- 10-6 (lost in Wildcard Playoff to Houston) 1989 - Cleveland Browns -- 9-6-1 (lost in AFC Championship to Denver) 1990 - Cleveland Browns -- 3-13 1991 - Cleveland Browns -- 6-10 1992 - Cleveland Browns -- 7-9 1993 - Cleveland Browns -- 7-9 1994 - Cleveland Browns -- 11-5 (lost in divisional playoff to Pittsburgh) 1995 - Cleveland Browns -- 5-11 SUMMARY: First three years, Browns were in the playoffs each year. Last six years, Browns had a winning record only once when they made it to playoffs. 1998 - Oakland Raiders -- 8-8 (followed 4-12 record in 1997) 1999 - Oakland Raiders -- 8-8 2000 - Oakland Raiders --12-4 (lost in AFC Championship to Baltimore) 2001 - Oakland Raiders -- 10-6 (lost in Divisional Playoff to New England) 2002 - Oakland Raiders -- 11-5 (lost in Super Bowl to Tampa Bay) 2003 - Oakland Raiders -- 4-12 2004 - Oakland Raiders -- 5-11 2005 - Oakland Raiders -- 4-12 2006 - Oakland Raiders -- 2-14 2007 - Oakland Raiders -- 4-12 SUMMARY: In the first five years, Raiders never had a losing record and were in the postseason three times where they lost to the Super Bowl winner each time. In each of his last five years, the Raiders never won more than five games and had 19-61 record overall. January 18, 201312 yr I don't know how much of the Oakland drafting you can hold against him. Al Davis was a major meddler in the draft process and often dictated the picks to his personnel guys.
January 18, 201312 yr WAG? Wives and Girlfriends. Originated, I think, in England from their tabloids.
January 18, 201312 yr I don't know how much of the Oakland drafting you can hold against him. Al Davis was a major meddler in the draft process and often dictated the picks to his personnel guys. Interesting interview of Lombardi right now on 92.3. When he was asked about his drafting record at Cleveland and then at Oakland, Lombardi said something to the effect of "It's fair to judge me on my experience in Cleveland because it was the only place where I was fully involved in every aspect of player personnel." He also defended his player-selection record there noting that he got some players from outside the draft, including WR Keenan McCardell from the Redskins practice squad. January 18, 201312 yr Great news! Not sure how Chud will do as head coach, but his chances of success are improved by having Turner as OC and now Horton as DC......... Horton named defensive coordinator http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/article-1/Horton-named-defensive-coordinator/6ce73a25-ae46-4e23-9359-daba28df25e5 "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
January 19, 201312 yr I like Horton. If a shift to the 3-4 is inevitable, I prefer the hybrid he runs with a NT, DT, DE, and an OLB that can both play with his hand in the dirt and standing up. 3 names for the draft with Horton running the show on defense are Demontrae Moore, Jarvis Jones, and Dee Milliner
January 21, 201312 yr It's called the Old Boys Network. Is that on the Cox cable TV network? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
January 22, 201312 yr It's called the Old Boys Network. Is that on the Cox cable TV network? No, Honey, they own the network!
January 22, 201312 yr Shurmer the new OC in Philly? How bizarre... Well..... let's think about it. Chip Kelly is the head coach, which makes "offensive coordinator" f the Eagles on par with "Assistant to the Regional Manager"
February 4, 201312 yr Congratulations to the Baltimore Brown....errr I mean Ravens. Thinking about another Baltimore championship makes me sick to my stomach. What could have been....
February 4, 201312 yr Ok, I don't like that team from Baltimore... BUT, they have no connection to the Cleveland Browns anymore. How many drafts have there been since then? 13? If we hired and drafted better in the past decade that could have been US last night, and the joke would be on them.
February 4, 201312 yr I think the sentiment is that although they left the name, colors, etc..... they did take the soul of our franchise with them to Baltimore and we've never got it back...... that nasty, hit you in your mouth, run it down your throat style of football that was the trademark of Browns football going back to the beginnings of the franchise. If they wouldn't have left, do you think Modell does not hire Ozzie? Do they not draft Ogden, Lewis, Reed, etc.?
February 4, 201312 yr yeah the one that really sticks in yr craw is their first superbowl win. oh did i just mention they have two now...?
February 4, 201312 yr yeah the one that really sticks in yr craw is their first superbowl win. oh did i just mention they have two now...? After their first super bowl win, it took me a couple of years (with the Browns going to playoffs in 2002) to start caring about pro football again and the Browns in particular. I'm still not the same fan I was before the move and Ravens' 2000 championship. In fact I can't even think about that stuff or I literally get sick to my stomach. February 5, 201312 yr I nearly got into about 5 fights in the quarter that night. (A couple of time I may have baited the Baltimore fans because I knew the cops nearby)
February 5, 201312 yr Cleveland Browns release defensive end Frostee Rucker http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2013/02/cleveland_browns_release_defen_1.html CLEVELAND -- The Browns released defensive end Frostee Rucker today, the club announced.

I'm all for new talent, but sorry to hear Frostee is going. Between he and Buster Screen I cannot get enough of Jim and Doug on the radio saying their names!
February 6, 201312 yr I'm all for new talent, but sorry to hear Frostee is going. Between he and Buster Screen I cannot get enough of Jim and Doug on the radio saying their names! I think this is a sign they're going to a 3-4 defense. Watch them move Jabaal Sheard to OLB and maybe pickup an OLB in free agency. FYI, it's Buster Skrine. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
February 6, 201312 yr A sign? I thought they were pretty upfront about the switch. And I actually think that Jabaal sticks at DE. Horton's defense, like a lot of "3-4" systems nowadays, uses a NT, a DT, and a DE...... as opposed to a NT and two DE's. Because the NT won't be in a "0" technique (i.e. right over center), the DE can play a little more outside than a more traditional 3-4 DE. Also, if you remember, Jabaal just didn't fit when they put him at rush end. Although not that big, he is strong as a bull and his play really took off once they moved him over to the strong side.

Only listen to Browns coverage on radio. The Browns print coverage drives me crazy.
February 6, 201312 yr A sign? I thought they were pretty upfront about the switch. Most of what I hear and read is they keep saying "probably" and "it will depend on the talent on the field." As for Sheard, I think he's too light to play on the defensive line all the time. And he's fast enough to play OLB. I've seen a number of draft reports who projected that the Browns would play him at OLB after they drafted him. So I'm not the only crazy guy who thinks he can be a floater between the line and out in space. Question is, can he recognize coverages and not get looked-off a play by the QB? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
February 8, 201312 yr You're probably right on Sheard. Taking a look at the Cardinals depth chart linked below, the sizes of the their defensive starter were: NT - 6'2 327 DT - 6'4 290 DE - 6'8 300 ROLB - 6'3 257 LOLB - 6'3 265 http://www.azcardinals.com/team/depth-chart.html I suppose I'm just still trying to convince myself that they will find a way to continue keeping Taylor and Rubin on the field at the same time and keep Sheard's hand in the dirt. It's frustrating. We FINALLY assembled a D-line that could pressure the QB with just a 4-man rush and now we are re-inventing the wheel :(
February 8, 201312 yr If Sheard is lined up against a TE most of the time rather than an OL, I think those are battles he'll win. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
February 8, 201312 yr Sure..... but he also does quite well beating road-grading RT's with his speed. He'll do fine either way. I am not worried about him matching up 'on the line of scrimmage.' I'm worried about his ability to drop into coverage.
February 12, 201312 yr Could Mike Wallace end up with Cleveland Browns? The Steelers have no plans to slap the franchise tag on wide receiver Mike Wallace, which means that the free agent's days in Pittsburgh are numbered. The news gets worse for Steelers fans. According to CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora, many in the organization believe the division-rival Cleveland Browns are Wallace's most likely landing spot next month. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000138181/article/could-mike-wallace-end-up-with-cleveland-browns
February 13, 201312 yr But wait, there's more in that La Canfora report...... The Browns have about $30 million in space and will be big spenders under new owner Jimmy Haslam and team president Joe Banner. Many in the Steelers organization believe Wallace will end up with their division rivals in Cleveland (Haslam was a former minority owner of the Steelers), and the Browns could make a play for a pass rusher like Kruger, too. Should Vick become available, he too could be in play -- this new regime badly wants to upgrade from former first-round pick Brandon Weeden -- otherwise Alex Smith might make sense, among others. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/21676714/jets-cowboys-among-many-teams-in-sticky-cap-quandaries "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

February 13, 201312 yr Forget Vick. Three other players are mentioned in that article as possible pickups by the Browns. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
February 13, 201312 yr I hope I can forget Vick. He'd be too much of a distraction here. I can already here the "Dawgpound" references coming from the protestors.

Wow, that would be bad. He is a divisive figure, which gives him more attention than he's due. So that's the last I'm going to say about him unless we actually sign him or play him as an opponent. February 13, 201312 yr Vick just resigned with Philly a few days ago, so unless they decide to trade him for some strange reason you won't have to worry. At least for 2013. http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/8936209/michael-vick-signs-one-year-deal-philadelphia-eagles

The Class Settlement agreement was approved Tuesday by U.S. District Judge James M. Moody in federal court for the Eastern District of Arkansas. July 16, 201311 yr One of the benefits of the site crash is seeing posts you hadn't before. I didn't realize that the Browns were so eager to dump Weeden already as that article seems to indicate--understanding there's a regime change, does he just not fit the style of play or is it they don't think he has the talent? Or was the reporter jumping the gun?
