Browns sign Barkevious Mingo to four-year, $16 million deal

 

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- For Browns' first-round pick Barkevious Mingo, the offset language in his contract was nowhere near as important as speaking the same language as his fellow rookies right from the start.

 

So eager was Mingo to get into camp in a timely fashion, he was already in Cleveland just waiting for his agent to say the word.

 

That word came in the wee hours of Sunday morning, when he agreed to terms on a fully-guaranteed four-year deal worth a little more than $16 million, including about a $10.7 million signing bonus. The Browns also have an option for a fifth year. The deal includes offset language, which is what the Browns wanted.

They set a "post hiatus era" record for training camp attendance Sunday, like 4,500.  This with the Senior Games creating a parking shortage at BW.

 

I took Ardyn on Friday, she didn't last long but enjoyed it while there.  She's only two, it was her first one.

 

I may take her back Wednesday.  Weekdays are the best time to go.  Weekday mornings were, but the CBA ended that.

Actually that jersey comes from a haul of memorabilia one of the Browns execs who didn't go to Baltiless got as part of his severance, he sold it to a friend of mine who ran the Football Town Again Tower City kiosk.  It was originally a Hoard but there's no name on it.  So now it's a Richardson.

With the regime change, one thing that has surprised me is the relatively stable carryover on the depth chart.  There's not the usual bevy of position battles.

 

Greco was put at RG, which makes sense because he might be our best road grader, and Lavao and Pinkston are battling for starting LG, with Lavao playing with the 1's for now.  The rest of the line is set with Thomas, Schwartz, and Mack.

 

Jordan Cameron is being given every chance to win the TE job

 

There's no debate that the top 3 WR's are Gordon, Little, and Bess.  The staff will probably keep 3 out of Benjamin, Nelson, Cooper, and Norwood.  I'd have to think that Benjamin is a shoe-in because he is our only downfield threat if we lose Gordon for any period of time and having a downfield threat is essential to this offense.

 

Weeden will become only the 2nd Browns QB since the return in 99 to start two consecutive openers.  Campbell will be his backup and Hoyer will look great holding a clipboard.

 

Behind Richardson, there is apparently going to be a battle between Hardesty, Ogbonnaya, Dion Lewis, and Brandon Jackson.  Two out of that group is four are likely to get cut.  Lewis is a Banner guy and has stood out so far.

 

On defense, the D-line is stacked.  Taylor is at nose with Hughes and Kitchen as his backups.  Rubin and Desmond Bryant are at the ends with Billy Winn behind them.  They will probably keep another one or two.

 

OLB is set with Sheard and Kruger as the starters and Mingo and Groves behind them.  I expect to see Sheard, Kruger, and Mingo all with their hand down at DE at various times throughout the game.

 

DQ52 is obviously one of the ILBs.  Craig Robertson is at the other spot for now.  Tank Carder and LJ Fort will make the team and might get a chance to win the job.

Your triangulation skills are lacking, my man.  I've never worked in Key Tower.  If you are thinking of the updates on the CC/MM construction I had posted over the years, most if not all of those were taken through the grimey windows at the Justice Center.

You forgot Slaughter. I think it's a toss-up between Gipson and Bademosi for the starting Free Safety job, but I expect Slaughter to be in the mix as a back-up at the start of the season and possibly for the rest of this season. But I think he's a future starter. He was an outstanding starter on a highly ranked Notre Dame team the last couple of years and would have been a high draft choice if not for his injury. If he's healthy, I expect him to compete for the top job in 2014. But lets see what he does in the preseason games.

I wasn't forgetting about Slaughter.  I just think that he is limited to playing SS.  He is more of a run support safety and I don't expect him to compete for the FS job.  He could, however, possibly be in the mix for dime back

BEREA, Ohio -- The facelift of a franchise can affect more than just the roster handed out at training camp. Everything is new. The personnel staff choosing those players. The coaches coaching them. Maybe even their surroundings during the preseason, right down to new banners and stands for fans.

 

The Cleveland Browns haven't tasted a playoff win since 1994, and the new regime is trying to get back to the promised land by starting over with a fresh set of circumstances.

 

If what I saw during my visit on Wednesday is indicative of the team's direction, success should eventually come for the die-hard fans who are so hungry for victories (and dog biscuits). Here are five things I heard in Berea:

BEREA, Ohio -- It is a few minutes after practice, and Miguel Maysonet sits on a bench overlooking the sprawling practice field at the Browns' training complex, talking hopefully about calling this place home for his NFL career.

 

The former Stony Brook star knows it won't be easy, not with a glut of running backs in training camp, not with blue-chip tailback Trent Richardson atop the depth chart. But Maysonet has come this far after a terrific career with the Seawolves, so the dream lives on for Riverhead's favorite son.

 

"I'm a guy from Stony Brook, and some people look down on it because of the competition we played," Maysonet said. "But I'm here for a reason, because they saw something in me. So I'm excited to show them what I can do."

Teams have to release depth charts when a preseason game approaches, but how Rob Chudzinski lists players doesn't necessarily reflect whether a player will make the team or not. Hmmmm...... Ogbannaya listed #1 at FB?  I guess they don't plan on running out of the I-formation very much.  I think the position battle which most intrigues me is the ILB spot opposite DQ52.  Robertson, Carder, and JMJ are all still in the mix I would guess.

I still don't understand why this team let go of Ben Watson. Norv Turner's offense relies on the TE. Jordan Cameron is unproven and his backup, Barnidge, has 18 catches since 2008. Gee, maybe he's a good blocker.... :-P

 

EDIT: a good tight end is a QB's best friend. It's probably the easiest throw for a QB when all else fails.

 

EDIT2: I'm not so surprised about Ogbannaya. I read he's been building his body mass in the offseason in the hopes of winning this job. Looks like it's paying off.

I liked what I saw.  We dominated the 1's vs. the 1's.  The offense moved the ball fairly easily against a solid Rams defense.  And how bout Travis Benjamin?  He might quickly become one of the most electric punt returners in the league.

Bernie Kosar made a good point on the Triv show.  The dink and dunk will often work a lot better in the pre-season than the regular season.  They need to be working on throwing downfield.

 

Still, I liked what I saw execution wise, especially game one.

 

We may get a better idea of the offense after the third game, including some of the downfield plays. I wouldn't be surprised if they're going to install increasingly more complicated elements of the offense as they move forward. But I liked what I saw on offense. Jordan Cameron better learn how to catch Weeden fastballs or we're back looking for a new tight end. And I'd like to see how Trent Richardson performs in this offense. It looks like RBs are going into pass patterns and could be a big deal in this offense. Combined with a downfield game opening things up underneath, this could be perfect for Weeden and Richardson.

 

But I didn't like what I saw on defense. The radio talk shows this morning are talking glowingly about the defense and I don't understand why. Yes, the blitz was active, but the pressure didn't work. I saw Rams QBs able to find open guys to beat the blitz and runners were able to gash their way up the middle as defenders overran the plays. Defenders need to watch their assignments, play the run on the way to the QB, and DBs are going to have to play tighter coverage downfield.

I didn't see any of that until our 2's were in on defense.  St. Loius first score was with our 2's on the field when they were still playing their 1's

I saw a mix of starters and second-stringers toward the end of the first quarter and into the second. That included Trevin Wade who was burned on the 59-yard pass from Bradford to Givens.

Wade is not a starter.  He 'started' last night because Owens and McFadden were injured and they wanted to see Skrine in the nickel (where he'll likely play when everyone is healthy).  On the Rams first quality drive, the front 7 were all backups, with a mix of rotational players such as Mingo, Winn, Fort, etc.  Haden was not in there and Ward and Owens were held out due to injury.

 

I also am not sure that was Wade's fault.  If you want to criticize any aspect of the defensive performance last night, look no further than the safeties.  Although Ward did not play, there is cause for concern that they won't be able to provide the CBs with the necessary support.

You sure Owens or McFadden are going to win the starting job? Of course, if Wade keeps getting beat, they might! But Owens is a Nickel CB, not starter material. And McFadden has never played in the NFL. He could be a good player someday but is still an unknown. So yes, the corner opposite Haden worries me. In fact the entire secondary except Haden worries me.

Not positive, but I've heard that the depth chart behind Haden goes - Owens, Skrine, McFadden, and then Wade.  However, Wade is seen as more of an 'on the edge' cover man and Skrine is terrible on the outside...... so when both Skrine and Wade are in the game, you will see Skrine stay inside and Wade cover the outside recievers.  I've never seen Owens play, but I know he has impressed in camp and shown some veteran savvy.  That might be a good sign or it might be a terrible indictment of the rest of our depth chart.  We shall see.

So Bernie Kosar's now in trouble for basically being honest.  Joe Banner even threw him under the PR bus.  In this regards (among others) I miss Al Lerner, who initially even refused to concede that Bottlegate didn't have some justice behind it.

Baskin is ripping Jeff Fisher for being way over-sensitive when he should be ripping his own receivers for being terrible. Phelps said he thought Bernie's comment about "forgive me father for I have sinned" was hilarious, but he noted that Bernie is paid by the Browns and thus speaking for the Browns and should dial it down.

I don't see how it is any different than when Chuck Barkley calls a player "turrible" in Inside the NBA

I probably haven't seen even half of the quotes, but I have yet to see anything I couldn't imagine hearing from Tom Hamilton, or Rick Manning. It's NFL policy that their broadcasts be boring and nationally focused, so not entirely a surprise. I just had the impression that preseason was anything goes unless the person fancied themself a future NFL broadcasting career.

It's different in that Barkley isn't paid by a team, therefore he is not representing a team. An independent voice like Barkley or a radio talk show host can speak their mind more freely with fewer direct repercussions. An advertiser or two may complain. But there are usually many advertisers. The Browns pay most if not of all of Bernie's salary and ask him to present the franchise in a certain way.

 

I don't mind what Bernie said. But I recognize that he has constraints placed on him by his employer and he has conduct himself accordingly.

BEREA: Bernie Kosar called St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher on Sunday to apologize for the comments he made during the telecast of Thursday night’s preseason opener, a team spokesman said. And Browns CEO Joe Banner released a statement Sunday night in an effort to quash the controversy.

 

“We don’t condone the personal and unprofessional approach that Bernie took with some of his comments during the broadcast Thursday night,” Banner said in the statement. “We’ve spoken to Bernie, he understands that, and we would expect the situation is resolved moving forward. We’ve also reached out to the Rams organization and have shared those same sentiments.”

 

Kosar, a beloved former quarterback of the Browns, is still scheduled to serve as an analyst for WKYC (Ch. 3) Thursday night, when the Detroit Lions visit FirstEnergy Stadium for the second preseason game. Kosar has not replied to a text message from the Beacon Journal seeking comment.

The Cleveland Browns’ players have embraced the team’s new offensive philosophy.

 

When the Cleveland Browns’ front office made the decision to hire Rob Chudzinski as head coach, they were looking for someone with an aggressive, attacking offensive mindset.

 

And when Chudzinski turned to his mentor, Norv Turner, to guide the offense, it signified a philosophical shift from the West Coast system to a more down-the-field style, something the players have embraced

throughout the offseason and training camp.

 

“I love it,” Weeden said. “It gives us an opportunity to create mismatches and do some things that fit our personnel. All of the guys outside, the receivers, the tight ends, they enjoy it and have a chance to make big plays.

LOL!  He is often unlistenable.  But when he gets on a roll he's relentless, Bernie's a friend, and him and his sidekicks were actually talking about how his comments were "refreshing".

 

If anything, Bernie was defending Sam Bradford.  As anyone who even played receiver in high school ball can tell you, they were making drops that would send a HS receiver off to do laps around the field in practice. 

 

One thing I find annoying is the NFL is worried about local broadcast announcers being "homers".  For F's sake, that's what local audiences want to hear.  It's just like conservatives getting news from Fox and liberals from MSNBC.

Bernie?  Oh, absolutely he will.  Though in this case he was reacting to two pet peeves.  A general one QBs have for receivers who don't concentrate and drop good passes, and a personal one for a guy who has all the tools needed except those above neck.  We forget that Bernie excelled as much mentally as he did physically.

 

They sure didn't look better.  It was an exhibition game, but 1st team vs. 1st team the Browns dominated, without Trent Richardson or T. J. Ward.  The Browns WRs are definitely better.
