Josh McDaniels no longer candidate

 

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has withdrawn from consideration for the Cleveland Browns' head coaching job, a league source told ESPN.

 

A person who knows McDaniels told ESPN the coach had an "awesome" meeting with the Browns but that it is not the right time for him to make a move. McDaniels enjoys his job working with Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick too much to leave New England at this time, according to the source.

McDaniels is obviously an early favorite to land the job...... but I think you all are going to be hearing the name Adam Gase a lot in the next few weeks (depending on how far the Broncos go in the playoffs - you can't hire an assistant while his team is still playing).  I like Gase.  He's my personal favorite at the moment.

 

I could be Denver's OC with Peyton Manning and the WRs they have.

^I'll bet you could have said the same thing about most successful head coaches in the NFL in the assistant role they were in prior to becoming head coach.  Mike McCarthy, Andy Reid, Bill Belichek, Mike Tomlin, etc.  All coached GREAT units as assistants.

I'm too lazy to look it up but I'm gonna call BS on that.

Andy Reid was Brett Favre's coach before he was hired in Philly.  He was named QB coach right around the time the Packers had that offensive juggernaut which won the Super Bowl and was hired as HC in Philly a few years laters, where he remained for 13 seasons.

 

Bill Cowher coached the KC defense led by Derrick Thomas and Neil Smith (a perenniel top ten unit) before being hired in Pittsburgh, where he reamined as head coach for 15 seasons.

 

Mike Tomlin was secondary coach of the Bucaneers during the high point of the Tampa 2 scheme installed under Tony Dungy.  He then went on to be DC of the Vikings unit led by the Williams' boys on the interior line.... giving him the league's best run defense.  He's remained with the Steeler for the past 5 or so years.

 

Bill Belicheck was DC of the Lawrence Taylor led Giants starting in 1985 and remained there until he took over the Browns.  I don't think I need to explain how talented that unit was.  He's been HC of the Patriots for 15+ years.

 

Marvin Lewis was DC of the Ray Lewis/Ed Reed Ravens prior to being hired by Cincy as their head coach over 10 years ago.

 

Mike Shanahan was OC for both the Elways led Broncos and Steve Young led 49ers before taking over as Broncos HC and remaining in that position for 13 years.

 

These are all some of the most successful and longest tenured coaches in recent memory.  Each of them had an embarassment of riches in terms of talent in their previous coordinator positions.  I wouldn't write a guy off simply because he knows what to do with a full deck.

Since Haslam has already put his foot down that he will take more active charge of the search this time around, I'd say the odds for Whisenhunt just shot up dramatically. I like him and would be pleased to have him as HC.

Considering he went to a Super Bowl and would have won it without some profoundly biased officiating, with Bill Bidwell as team owner, I'd be cool with him being hired.

He might be #1 on our list.  But the question with each of these candidates is quickly becoming whether the Browns are #1 on their list.  Whisenhunt is interviewing with Detroit and Tennessee before he gets to us and it is hard to blame him if he preferred either of those gigs over the one we have to offer.  It's just a bad time to be looking for a new HC.  Who knows how the whole Haslam / Pilot Flying J fiasco shakes out.  And you gotta think Banner might be on a short leash.  Whoever gets hired has to face the reality that another major shake-up could be just around the corner, regardless of success this upcoming season.

There's a certain degree of poetic justice as San Diego interviewed its current coach under similar circumstances.

The Browns will interview San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt today, according to reports. I'm not sure how the Browns managed to scare away McDaniels, but if they don't get Whisenhunt and instead end up with another coordinator with no head coaching experience, it's going to be a major disappointment.

McDaniels wanted the job, that's why he interviewed for it..  Through Lombardi, he probably learned that he was a fall back guy in case Haslam couldn't get the guy he wanted, which is probably Whisenhunt.  Whiz was interviewed twice last year and Haslam reportedly liked him the most, but he (JH) was talked out of it and went with Banner's choice, Chud.

 

Banner (and Lombardi) probably see Whisenhunt as a threat since he'll want more say/power in the Org. than a greenhorn like Chud or previous HC failure like McHoodie.  My guess is that if/when Whisenhunt is hired, we could see some sort of shake-up in the FO.

You’ll never hear me say that talent does not require coaching skills.  Indeed, getting the most out of a highly talented group as a coordinator may show skills in demand as a head coach.

 

It’s a lot like during the mid 1990s.  Mike Hargrove and Joe Torre were successful managers because they got the most out of some of their talented-but-moody players.  Robbie Alomar had a massive career resurgence when he came here that came to a screeching halt when he left.  Albert Belle was only a shadow of his former self after he left, and Kenny Lofton did way better here than elsewhere.

 

What the heck is going on in Berea? The only way the Chud firing made sense is if you have an upgrade locked up and waiting in the wings. It doesn't appear that was the case. I am afraid that Haslam has gone Jerry Jones on us.

Yep. Or there was a huge disagreement and irreconcilable differences between Chud and the FO, which may be the case.

It sounds as though Adam Gase is the guy they want and they are waiting for the Broncos season to be over.

I would rather have Munchack.... even though him being reluctant to fire coaches due to it "not being the fair thing to do" worries me.

something with the organization is scaring these coaches away.  The Browns are LOADED with draft picks next year, have plenty of salary cap room & have a really solid base of talent on both sides of the ball right now.  The only big detractor I see is the void at QB.  I can't believe that is so much of a detractor to keep all these good candidates from pulling back...

maybe its because this new front office has fired two head coaches in less than one calendar year.

That said, we haven't had any confirmation that any candidate has been offered and turned down the job... a la Kelly last year.  It's entirely possible, as I alluded to earlier, that Gase is and has always been their top pick.

 

Mel Kiper's first mock draft has Houston taking Manziel #1 and has us taking Bortles at #4.  Bridgewater slides to the Vikings at #8.

 

I have trouble seeing it play out like that.  Houston will be under some pressure to take Manziel, but I think their M.O. will ultimately lead them to Clowney.  While I'm more than OK taking Bortles, I don't see us taking him over Bridgewater.

No.  I think the combine actually muddles the mock drafts.  There are always a few players who make a leap at the combine, but more often it is just hype and the pieces eventually fall back into place.  Good GMs know to trust the game film and scouting reports more than watching a guy run and jump in shorts and a t-shirt.  Too many teams have been burned by "combine warriors."

 

Don't be surprised about Bridgewater, especially if he measures shorter than expected.  Nobody would've predicted that Gino Smith, Brady Quinn, or Aaron Rogers would slip to where they ended up in their respective drafts.

And Bess really dropped the ball on this one! Bess was a good WR in Miami, catching an average of 60 passes a year. His problems catching the pass this year now makes more sense in light of his apparent drug problems. But this will probably knock him out of the game for a long time....

This would be strike two on the front office unwittingly bringing in damaged goods. That waivers/practice squad guy that was injured, and now this. It's not like they wanted a guy that was detained against his will in a hospital one month before being traded. They were trying to get rid of 2013's best WR just a few months ago. They flat out didn't know, and got screwed again.
