I just hope the Browns get good so we can stop giving a shit about the draft. The draft talk got old before the regular season ended.

Slow down on the "we", champ.  The great thing about the NFL draft, compared to the NBA draft for instance, is that you can get impact players beyond the top 10.  It's a big deal no matter whether you are good or not.  Assuming we won't care about the draft once we get good is like saying that OSU fans don't need to worry about recruiting (something which is monumentally gaining in popularity on the internet).  It will always be interesting and exciting...... except for that year we didn't have a pick in the first three rounds :(

@KJP Yeah of course and that's for the GM to worry about. Anything outside the top 10 is boring radio.

Do you think talk radio in Boston is breaking down New England's 20-whatever pick in the first round? Or the guard they hope to take in the 3rd round? Nope, especially not 24/7 like we do here and likely other perennial loser cities.

@Hts121 Cities of winning teams don't spend nearly the energy wringing their hands over the draft as we do. Following the draft is one thing. The 24/7 coverage since our season ended in November is exhausting -- while teams are still playing meaningful football. Think Seattle was worried about Johnny Football's bowl game when they were busy winning the Super Bowl?

To you, it's boring. Not to everyone.

Click on these links to listen to Boston sports talk radio live. I just did. They were talking about the NFL draft (and the Bruins who are in the playoffs with a game tonight) when I clicked on them.

^^You'd be surprised..... very suprised  I know for a fact that Philly is talking draft non-stop, despite the Flyers being in the playoffs and the Phillies starting their season.  Charlotte too.  I'd assume most others.  It totally depends on whether it is a football crazy town.  I would guess that Cincy or Miami for example is not talking draft all that much, and that is probably the case regardless of where they are picking any given year.  In Miami, they aren't talking sports period.  It has nothing to do with being one of the 'perennial loser cities', as you label us, and everything to do with how fanatical the fan-base is....

Watch what's the lead story on the sports networks (ESPN, FoxSports, SportsTime, etc).

The Browns sold out 97% of their seats in 2013 in the midst of the sixth year in a row of 10+ loss seasons.

Have you seen what this city is like when the Browns are consistently good? I have. It's crazy. And we watched the draft then too -- long before it became the big media event or before the Internet.

@KJP Your evidence is randomly tuning into a sports talk radio station on the day of the draft 2 hours before it starts? Even then they are partially talking hockey. Try getting some samples in December.

@Hts121 I wouldn't doubt other football crazy towns talk a lot of draft. I just doubt the teams in the 20's are as obsessed about it. How many times have you heard people glibly say the draft is our super bowl? This year put me over the edge.

No I haven't. That's why I'm so sick of talking about the damn draft. All the foreplay, none of the payoff.

I provided evidence in response to your personal feelings (although you added new parameters to it in an attempt to nullify it). You've provided no evidence of your own. However you have projected your feelings on to others because you cannot understand how others may feel differently than you. Who says you have to understand why other people care or don't care about something? Can't you just let us enjoy something you don't understand without sh!tting on it?

So back to the purpose of this thread -- I just heard a HOT rumor!! The Browns will take Leon Sandcastle! sohappyemote.gif

You've provided no evidence of your own.

Fair enough. The owner of Good Karma Broadcasting is from the Green Bay area and was on the Rizzo show earlier this week. He said himself the fever over the draft wasn't anything like this in Green Bay. He jokingly said the town doesn't even know who they drafted until they show up on the field on gameday.

Here's my rumor for the day: I hear the Browns are going to draft somebody at #4 or they might trade down (possibly up). They really like Mack, Robinson, Watkins, Clowney, Manziel, and a bunch of other people. Somebody should tweet that at Mortenson and the other idiots at ESPN that need a story to manufacture.

(this offseason has been especially aggravating to me)

It's more difficult to avoid the chatter this year as the draft is two weeks later and therefore has extended the chatter to the point that we'll all be glad when it's over. And yes, the draft is always a bigger deal in cities with losing teams.

But I don't feel bad that you feel tormented. You can always turn off radio stations. TV stations. Avoid sports websites, and so on to limit your personal torment from all this draft chatter. Instead you visit the Browns thread of a website where most of it has nothing to do with sports at all? You have chosen to expose yourself to all this draft chatter. All up to you.

So back to the point of this thread.......

Bridgewater is getting a positive bounce as we approach the draft. I've heard more positive things about Teddy today on NFL Network and ESPN than I have for many months and more negative things about Manziel than I have heard for awhile.

Tom Brady was selected in the 6th Round in 2000.

I'm sure everyone in Boston (and perhaps in other NFL cities) are watching to see where Belichek and management do.  I personally find those picks more interesting than the Top 20 or whatever.

Ray Farmer is a bad ass. A cool customer. He got the best CB in the draft, he got the most exciting QB since Bernie Kosar, and he got two more picks in 2015 including a #1 pick! I think the Browns found their star GM.

Well, Johnny is a polarizing guy. But he wins and the Browns will win. That's all that matters. So don't let the door hit you in the tail.

I won't.  Have fun rooting for a perpetual loser.  An even douchier version of Brady Quinn.  I didn't know that was possible.

The Browns may eventually win some day.  It won't be with Johnny Manziel.

I can't.  It would be NSFW.

Thanks for the comedy, Brownies! Looking forward to seeing Colt Manziel's first season on the Couch!  :-P

You're right, I don't know for sure that they will continue to suck.  But I do know that I won't be rooting for them if Manziel is the starting quarterback.

So with that, I will stop posting until we get rid of him.  I hope you all enjoy the multiple Super Bowl rings he could bring you true fans.

I was 100% anti-Manziel.

But now we have him, and I wish him the best, because nothing could be better for this town right now than the Browns actually contending for a championship.  To his credit, his in-the-moment interview was the opposite of douchebag--completely classy with signs of leadership.

Time to sit back and see what happens!

So the cornerback we got (along with a first- and fourth-rounder in 2015!) is a terrific cover corner. He's still a bit raw, but possesses all the physical tools you want from a corner -- 4.31 speed, 6', 200#. And he's a fantastic kick returner. He has the potential to reach the pro bowl both as a corner and as a returner.

And look at all the WRs still on the boards, some of whom were projected to be first-rounders, for us to get in the second round. All of these guys -- Lee, Adams, Matthews, Latimer, Moncrief, Robinson -- are still there for the taking. And I highly doubt Ray Farmer is done moving around, so we may get more second-round picks. Farmer deserves a A+++ for this first round, following a remarkable free-agency. I'm in love with this guy.

Man, why do u hate this guy so much? I used to think he was a bag but he backs it all up with hard work. The great thing about this is Farmer didn't take the biggest risk, took the top CB and snagged another top 10 pick next year. U have seething against his personality, maybe too flashy, I don't know. But come on man, move past it.

Great job by Farmer in round 1.  We got the CB we desperately needed, the QB we all new we needed, and another 1st round pick next year to boot!  Now hoping for Su-a Filo at #35 to protect Johnny and open holes for Tate.  If not a G, maybe an ILB to pair with Dansby.

All I have to add to the conversation is that I'm glad it's perfect outside. I'll spend my afternoon on the motorcycle and evening in the hammock and read about who they actually picked in the morning. No need to listen to more speculation.

I live for this. I took the day off. I got my windows open with a strong breeze blowing through my fifth-floor condo -- that's the extent of my enjoying this weather. My phone is on one twitter account, my desktop computer on another, with about four more windows open to different sites to track news. I've got  the radio on The Fan. My TV in the office is muted, but on ESPN and my TV in the living room is on the NFL network. I'm recording both channels starting at 7 p.m.

Yep, I'm into it. ;)

I can understand enjoying the speculation (I treat election days like that, though with the addition of a bit of alcohol), but as I don't follow college football closely enough to know who half the guys are that everyone's talking about, the draft speculation has always annoyed me. It seemed to go on forever this year.

Now that round one is done, I'm reasonably happy. I didn't really want Manziel, he's polarizing, but if he can bring some wins I'll certainly get over it. The fact that we used the 26th pick and not the 4th to pick him up though makes it OK to me though.

Still in shock.  That was one helluva rollercoaster last night.  The bar I was at went nuts when they picked Johnny.

There is still plenty of first round talent (in any other draft) left for us at #35.  We could go with Hyde there, one of the WRs KJP listed, one of three high quality OG's left, an ILB to pair with Dansby, or add more depth to he defensive line.  There are some really good looking potential 3-4 DE's still on the boardd.

Sorry to be Debbie Downer, but I was not pleased with last night’s festivities.  First and foremost, I'm not sold on Johnny Football.  My heart sank when Jacksonville grabbed Blake Bortles at no. 3 right before the Browns.  Then to compound the mistake, we passed over Teddy Bridgewater for Manziel at no. 22 (where we traded up with the Eagles to get him), who fell to the Vikings at no. 32.  I think both Bortles and Bridgewater will turn out to be considerably better than Manziel – I hope I’m wrong, because I’m a diehard Brownie, but being old enough to see how many bad QB picks we’ve made over the years that have crippled this franchise – from Mike Phipps to Couch, to Brady Quinn, to Colt McCoy, to Weeden, etc., etc…

Yes, we obviously did get it right with Bernie (and look at the run we had with him) and we may have gotten it right with Hoyer who has merely been a promising “Incomplete” to date,… Quarterback is the foundation of your franchise as in no other professional sport and, too often, the Browns bow to popular opinion/pressure rather than really doing their homework and assessing the prospect’s actual talents, or lack thereof.  I truly believe Haslam was behind this pick and I’m fearful Manziel will be a bust… again, hope I’m wrong..

Also, while I liked Farmer’s trade out of the no. 4 pick, I’d have rather grabbed Sammy Watkins rather than Justin Gilbert.  Granted it is nice to have a quality CB back there with Haden (egad, no more Buster Skreen!!), but we needed a quality WR more … a guy who could compliment Gordon and who could add depth to our receiving core in the vent of injury…Aside from 1 guy here and there, we really haven’t had a quality wide receiving core since the 1980s.

There's still quality wr's left in the 2nd rd to pair up w/Gordon.  And no more buster? You do realize how often three cb's are on the field, right?

^ and the complete lack of depth that we have at CB, too. Skreen has come a long  long long way. He'll be a nice complement to Haden and Gilbert.

When was the last time a Browns draft pick got a billboard in midtown Manhattan only hours after he was drafted?

I realize this "falls to" stuff that I'm seeing all over the place is part of draft jargon, but to a casual observer it sounds like the player is being conquered by the team.

There's still quality wr's left in the 2nd rd to pair up w/Gordon.  And no more buster? You do realize how often three cb's are on the field, right?

I agree, there are a no. of good WRs on the board, so I'm less worried about that.  I still would have liked Watkins, though... Yes, no more Buster is huge, no doubt.

^^No doubt, KJP, picking Manziel was a great marketing tool.  Season ticket sales, as well as Jonny M. Browns jersey sales, spiked within an hour of the pick.  All eyes will be on Cleveland --  you can bet we just earned several national TV slots; I just hope it's not for the usual embarrassment our sports teams and our athletes have given us over the years.

Browns got the best corner in the draft AND two draft picks in 2015 (including a first-rounder). That's huge. Interestingly, the Steelers really wanted Gilbert. Too bad Pittspuke. Now this is our time.

And if the Browns are going after value AND need, then they will go after one of the top WRs in round two. Lee and Robinson were projected first-rounders. Also remaining are Adams, Matthews, Latimer and Moncrief. Lots to choose from.

And based on the magic Farmer was able to work in the first round, we could end up with two second-round picks. Let's watch and see what he's able to do.

I believe in Ray.

If the Browns plan on keeping 6' 205 lbs Johnny on the field they had better address the OL early in the draft, they basically have zilch invested at both G positions.  $3M to McQuistan, 5th rounder Pinkston & Heckert gift Greco, that will not cut it against the Ravens & Bengals DL among other teams we'll face this year.

The 1st round makes me feel good that the FO understands where our biggest holes are, hopefully that continues into the 2nd round.

There's not one person I have heard say Bridgewater is better than Johnny Manziel

Gordon failed another drug test. WOW. He's done.  Wonder if they draft two WRs tonight??

^** ok, 1.

Regarding Gordon, he has an addiction. Knowing u can lose your job and you still do drugs? That's a problem

I read that the Browns already new about the failed test. But they still passed on Watkins and went OL with their second rounder. Curious

^^i agree

I was lobbying for an OL at #35, but that was before the Gordon news.  If he's really out a year, even I would question the OL pick.

Anybody got Carlton Mitchell's phone # ?

What do you guys think ilb or wr , if Gordon is out for the year you got to get a wr right

I guess they went with the ILB
