Disruptive Browns fan to be in jail for Super Bowl

CLEVELAND -- The fan who ran onto the field at Cleveland Browns Stadium during a Steelers-Browns game was sentenced yesterday to spend Super Bowl weekend in jail.  Nathan Mallett, 24, will begin his three-day sentence on Feb. 3 and won't be allowed to watch the Feb. 5 game on television or listen to it on radio.  Municipal Court Judge Joan Synenberg ordered Mr. Mallett not to attend Browns games in Cleveland or any other city for five years as a condition of his probation.  He also most perform 150 hours of community service with Browns charities.  He could have been sentenced to up to 30 days in jail.

otoh, if the steelers make it maybe he should be forced to watch? -- from jail of course.

Make him wear a Steeler's jersey and force him to cheer.  Get a big fat, surly sheriff to watch over him saying, "Son, if I ain't believin' you like the Stiller's by the end of this 'ere game, you'se goin' ta prison, boy!  An yo' ass'll be mine!"

That's a great punishment.  I'd vote for that judge in a second.

 

Its great to see the Browns adding some local stars to the lineup. --especially when one of those new signings is considered the top free agent in this year's class!

 

Putting Cleveland in the Browns

The word "Cleveland" was solidly put in front of "Browns" Saturday as free agency opened in whirlwind fashion here.

 

Two of the three free agents the Browns signed - offensive lineman LeCharles Bentley, who comes from the New Orleans Saints and wide receiver Joe Jurevicius (NFC champion Seattle Seahawks) - are from the Greater Cleveland area.

Browns added their third Cleveland-area native of the free agency period today.

Sad that signing a punter is so important to the Browns...the one position player you never want to see on the field!

Yeah, but when they give your defense some breathing room after your offense has been backed up 4th and 10 on your own 3 yard line, or when they put one inside the opponents 10 yard line, then you realize how key they can be in the field position game!

Oh, trust me, I know!  I was serious when I meant that this is so important for us.  Last year was the pits!

Oh yea, Zastudil is from Ohio University!!!!! Great punter! (he had a lot of practice at OU unfortunately)

  Rookies report on Sunday!  At least this will take my mind OFF of the Indians!

 

Bentley lost for the season

 

The Browns have lost center LeCharles Bentley for the 2006 season.  Bentley was taken off the practice field Thursday morning after suffering a torn patella tendon in his left knee during a team drill.  Before the afternoon practice, general manager Phil Savage confirmed Bentley's injury and said Bentley will have surgery as soon as Friday.

The Browns are Cursed  :-(

The only positive is that, if it had to happen, at least it happened now.  Much worse to have happened after the whole training camp and exhibition games and game plans were drawn up around him at center.

True it gives them a chance to prepair the backup center Halen to play. He can learn the sceams and practice with the first team and go against big Ted washington.

I still can't get over this.  I honestly couldn't think of a worse way to start training camp.

I've just come to deal with the fact that God does not like Cleveland sports.  A freak accident like this on the second day of training camp when they are not even in full pads can only happen to a Cleveland franchise.

That snickering you hear in Cleveland is coming from Philadelphia Eagle fans, who is still mildly bent at Bentley reneging on a hand shake deal they had prior to FA starting.

Its good to hear the Braylon Edwards might be playing come September 10th.  He wasn't expected back until mid-season.  He started practicing with the team on Sunday.

Braylon Edwards should NOT be practicing and the team is taking a big risk by putting him out there.  The reason Edwards got activated all of sudden is because the team desperately needed to give fans some positive news after Bentley went down.

I don't know about that, he got his surgery around the same time as Carson palmer and he is practicing now.

plus BE had his injury a couple months before the surgery so they did the surgery after swelling was gone.

It's not like he's participating in contact drills.  He's probably exerting himself the same as he would in rehab, so why not start running some routes to develop that chemistry with Frye?

I do cringe at the thought of him making cuts across the field, but hey, he's a professional and so are his doctors and trainers!

I don't have a source...just call it informed intuition.  I'm a huge Browns fan and read everything I can get my hands on about them on a daily basis.  Everything I saw up to the point that he was giving the ok to practice lead me to believe that his progress was not going as well as Carson Palmer's and that he wouldn't be activated anytime soon. 

 

Then without any warning or news of significant progress, he all of a sudden got the ok to practice.  That sounds a little odd to me.  Usually when a player has progressed to the point where he is almost being ready to practice, everybody knows.  The morale of Browns fans plummeted after Bentley got hurt.  Doesn't anyone else find the timing of this with Edwards a little ironic.  This is why I think this was a PR move more than anything else.  You can't tell me that doctors are immune to any pressure that could cause them to give Edwards the ok to practice before he's actually ready.

 

I understand that Edwards is only practicing on a limited basis, but there is little doubt in my mind that if Bentley had not gotten hurt, Edwards would not be on the field right now.

 

But I don't think that the Browns would risk such a multi-million dollar investment by running Edwards out there before he's ready. Its too risky and it would be psychologically-catastrophic if BE were to re-injure his knee in camp.  I think that the brain trust is too smart to run the risk.

Did anyone, from either team, stand out?

The defense actually looked pretty decent.....the two new rookies looked great at linebacker....the offense..well, wasn't a disaster, but could have looked better.  I am still a bit unsure if Frye's arm is strong enough...there were not enough passes for me to make judgment....as for depth...PLEASE don't let anyone else get hurt!  I would really like to see the rookie RB Harrison get some more PT...I think there might be some serious potential there....that was just a brief synopsis...

you know, i'm starting to think that the browns ought to play out the season without a center ;)

Lerner poised to take over Aston Villa

BIRMINGHAM, England -- Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner is set to take over Aston Villa after a rival group failed Thursday to match his bid to buy the Premier League soccer team. 

 

A group led by Michael Neville and Nicolas Padfield could not better the $118.8 million bid Lerner made Aug. 14 to buy Villa, one of the oldest teams in English soccer.

 

 

 

I'm inspired...but then again, I'm inspired EVERY year!  Go Browns!!!

In their division, they'll be last.  But, it's an extremely tough division so they should be better than last year (and yes, that's an honest answer).  Think of it as a "building up" season (like Baltimore did last season).

The AFC North is just too tough....I would give a better record if they were in a division like NFC North or AFC South.

yeah, all the uncertainty that developed during the preseason has caused my optimism to waver... that, and we've got one hell of a division! 

 

Still, I think it should be an exciting season.  No one should take us lightly, as we'll probably be a much more explosive team - both offensively and defensively - this year than last.

Since Cleveland is hosting the Saints, I know which game the Baton Rouge Fox affliate is showing down here. :-D

FWIW, The Saints should have a good offense with Drew Brees at QB, Duece McCallister at RB, Joe Horn at WR and Reggie Bush doing punt/kick returns (Bush should get more time on special teams than on offense).

However, the Saints defense might be able to stop St. Igancius, but even that is questionable.

 

The impression I've been given of the Brownies is the opposite of the Saints.  Good Defense, but too many question marks on offense (because they have no offensive line).

 

Who knows, by the end of the season both teams could finish with a same 6-10 mark.

I'm so optimistic that they'll be better; however, the AFC North this year is going to be brutal, no way they make any real noise within the division.  I'd like to see them at least get to .500, but if they can at least get close, let's say 7-9, I'd be happy.

The LeCharles Bentley injury - and subsequent center chase -- has seemed to cast a cloud over the entire preseason.  And I'm sorry, I just am not buying Charlie Frye as a big time NFL QB; no way -- He looks like a scared kid.  Didn't we learn our lesson?  I think it's going to be Tim Couch all over again, and this time, with NO BACKUP whatsoever.  I sure wish we'd have gone after Steve McNair -- who, despite his injuries, is a talented tough guy who's been to the Super Bowl and nearly injured one of the great SBowl comebacks.  And we let Baltimore, of all teams, land him!

 

I just don't like what I'm seeing, so far -- even though preseason doesn't amount to much, we look totally clueless.  I'm very worried about our beloved Brownies and am really biding time for LeBron & the Boys.

I'm guessing 7-9.  There will be a lot of close games this year.  If they can pull out the close ones (which they've never done in the past) it could be better.  If they lose those close ones, ughhhh.
