It's gonna be OK.  This same roster, more or less, led the division thru half of the 2014 season.  Then this past year we had a ton of concussions, led the league in that stat.  Our secondary in particular was decimated.  Plus, our best offensive player sat out the year.  And there were indications that some players gave up on Pettine, and his staff and his schemes, a while ago.

I like to believe that what we just saw was not representative of where we're going.  Hue Jackson is the best head coaching hire we've had in a long time.

I think concussions, are the new way to give up on a coach and still get paid.

The league decides who enters/exits the concussion protocol and when, not individual teams.

True.  But concussion symptoms are fairly easy to fake.  Maybe not so much the initial concussion, but the after effects..... headaches, dizziness, feeling nauseous, etc.

I've been in occupational safety part of the time and it's not as easy as you might think.  There's tests of involuntary reactions like pupil dilation and reaction as well.

That's why I said maybe not so much the initial concussion.  But the lingering symptoms are much more easily faked, if one was so inclined.

If a tweet picture is worth a thousand words regarding the Browns' draft-day intentions....

92 The Fan's Dustin Fox, who is also employed by the Browns for its training camp wrap-up shows and other programs, just reported that he chatted with a "high-ranking Browns executive" who said it was Ray Farmer, not Jimmy Haslam, who wanted to draft Johnny Manziel. He said Farmer lobbied hard to convince others at 55 Lou Groza Blvd in Berea that Manziel was "Russell Wilson on steroids." Dustin Fox said that, considering his source, it's undeniable.

It's so frustrating to think of all the high draft picks that the Browns have blown over just the past few years.  :x

I agree that the girl seems to be trouble for Manziel, but I doubt she is making it up

I agree that the girl seems to be trouble for Manziel, but I doubt she is making it up

Why do you doubt it?  Apparently, she was doing precisely that in Avon.

Just saw some reports that the Browns will cut Manziel on or around March 9.... shocking

Browns to move on from Johnny Manziel after latest incident

Johnny Manziel's time with the Cleveland Browns will come to an end in March, according to a league source.

The Browns released a statement from new director of football operations Sashi Brown on Tuesday that expressed disappointment in Manziel but stopped short of saying the quarterback's run in Cleveland is over.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/14697600/cleveland-browns-moving-johnny-manziel-latest-incident-source-says

This would be profoundly stupid.  Pretty much every incident, no matter how small, has been blown way out of proportion by the trash media and "fans" who hate him because of his demeanor and lifestyle.

They can cut him on Monday. That's the earliest opportunity. But this was a dumb statement for the Browns to make. No GM is going to trade for JFF now, not even a 7th rounder. If the Browns trade JFF for a 7th round pick, they can dump his remaining salary and not take a cap hit. But if they waive him, they take a cap hit even if another team re-signs him. I thought these new front-office guys were smart??

EDIT: now I see that, while they can cut JFF on Monday, they won't cut him until March 9 at the start of the new league year. If they wait until then, the cap hit is less (or even gone?).

When you consider what the Cowboys put up with Dez Bryant, and the rewards they have received since, this becomes more imbecilic.  Especially since the Cowboys would overpay for him to humor their fans.

As much as Dez Bryant is a high-maintenance prima dona who needed a full-time babysitter to keep him in line, he pales compared to Greg Hardy. Hardy is a psycho nut job who is a whisker away from killing someone. Jerry Jones signed Hardy because he's excellent pass rusher. If Jones thinks Johnny Football can win him some games, he'll sign him regardless of how much spoiled little party boy is left in him.

I'm done with the Manziel talk.  cut him or keep him, I don't really care.

Since as Briwns fans, draft talk is as ingrained in our fabric as the latest QB drama, let's switch gears for a moment. Who you got at 2 and why?

I'm going Bosa if he is there. It's rare that a defensive lineman can impact a game the way he does. Of course, I will forewarn you that me taking that position means he will fall into the Ravens' lap at 6.

I'm not convinced there is a QB worthy of the #2 pick.  Historically, that is an awful slot to take a QB. Since 1973, only McNabb can arguably justify his selection there.  If a QB is truly worthy of a top 5 pick, he is usually taken #1 overall. Some team, some way jumps up there and takes him.

With our second pick, I want the best ILB they can find. A tough SOB that will fill gaps with ferocity.

What I like about Manziel being dumped is that the new Browns front office is telling players they aren't going to put up with the BS. Don't be surprised to see Dwayne Bowe and even Justine Gilbert gone too. I'll never forget when Marty Schottenheimer was named head coach midway through the 1984 season. Sam Rutigliano was a nice guy but was fired after going 1-7. Schottenheimer was playing no more Mr. Nice Guy. He immediately waived a talented WR Duriel Harris because of he kept dropping passes on the field and screwing around off the field and in practice. That sent a message to the rest of the team. The Browns went 4-4 the rest of the 1984 season.

On the draft -- I don't think it's that much of a reach to take Goff/Lynch/Wentz at #2. I think at least one of these three and possibly two of them will go before 15 and probably in the top 10. Browns have to take a potential franchise QB in this draft, and those guys won't be there by the time the Browns' turn comes again at #32.

This draft is deep with linebackers and edge rushers. Unlike QBs, there will still be a top-quality LB/edge rusher still on the boards at #32.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

The Browns haven't taken a QB in the top 10 since Couch so I'm not totally against the idea. Yes, we need a QB. But we also just need talent.... high end talent. Whomever we pick better be a pro bowler, and soon. I know next to nothing about Wentz and Lynch. I've liked Goff ever since he looked so good as a frosh against tOSU. I WISH HE WOULD've/could've bulked up a bit more since then. What is really gonna piss me off is if, yet again, we blow a top pick and our division rivals add to their bevy of pro bowlers

Teams can win without pro-bowlers on defense. They can win with a majority of just better-than-average players on offense. But a team cannot win without a franchise QB. Sure, there's a few exceptions in history. But we have to keep drafting QBs until we find one. And we cannot easily find a franchise QB outside of the first round and perhaps not after the middle of the first round.

Haslam isn't pushing the idea. Columbus is.

Haslam isn't pushing the idea. Columbus is.

According to Larkin:

Haslam has been negotiating to move the team's training camp to Columbus since nearly 50,000 fans attended an intrasquad scrimmage at Ohio Stadium last summer.

Who initiated the negotiations?

Who initiated the negotiations?

I'm not sure I understand the importance of who initiated things. The article states that Haslam is supportive of using tax money for this.

The Columbus Partnership, which includes leaders of about 50 of that city's largest corporations, is the lead proponent of using state tax proceeds to move the Browns. But the funds are being sought with Browns owner Jimmy Haslam's knowledge and approval.

I'm not sure I understand the importance of who initiated things.

Sorry to hear that.

So back to actual football....

It looks like the Browns will have Barnidge and Benjamin locked up for a while...

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...th-the-browns/

“Hopefully, I can lock up before March,” Benjamin said.

He said he’s spoken to new Browns coach Hue Jackson and that Jackson told Benjamin “he loves my skill set, loves my speed. Hopefully it will be a great 2016 season for us.”

Notice Rabbit's use of "us", as opposed to Mack's use of "they".

I'd agree with all that.  But as I said, I'm not convinced there is a top-tier QB in this draft.  JMO... but I don't think I'm alone.  That opinion is of course subject to change.  I'm not reaching at 2 for someone who is the 30th best player in this draft based on talent.  There are some dynamic playmakers in this draft.  And truly impact defensive players can indeed change the fortunes of their teams.  For all the fanfare Cam Newton gets, Carolina is not in the SB without Luke.  Ed Reed and Ray Lewis carried Baltimore into the playoffs year after year.  Reggie White completely changed the trajectory of the Packers franchise when he signed there.  JJ Watt hasn't gotten the Texans to the SB yet, but he sure makes watching their games a lot more tolerable.

Based on this and past history (particularly the Avon incident), I'd say it's at least 50% likely this is Crowley making something up to pay him back for dumping her.

Quarterback Johnny Manziel allegedly struck his ex-girlfriend several times during an incident at the Hotel ZaZa in downtown Dallas last Saturday, according to a police report released Thursday.

According to the report, Manziel and his ex-girlfriend left the hotel after he struck her. Manziel drove them to his ex-girlfriend's apartment in Fort Worth. The ex-girlfriend told officers that she and Manziel shouted angrily at each other, going back and forth, during the drive, and that he struck her several more times.

Considering the Browns still employ Jim Brown and use him as a team ambassador, I think it's safe to say they do not consider this a big deal in itself.

The report changes absolutely nothing.  The only news is confirmation that it was Crowley and they broke up.

These reports might change things, however. When your agent drops you, things are bad....

And there may not be a fallback team waiting for Manziel after the Browns release him....

Report: Cowboys don’t want Manziel

Posted by Mike Florio on February 5, 2016, 10:07 AM EST

Johnny Manziel could be getting the wake up call he needs.

At a time when many believe Manziel wants out of Cleveland so he can play for the Cowboys, WFAA in Dallas reports that the Cowboys don’t want him. Per the report, “a high-ranking Cowboys source says that Dallas is out on Manziel after the latest reports involving the quarterback and domestic violence allegations.” WFAA notes that the same high-ranking official previously expressed doubt that Manziel would be pursued.

The Browns will waive Manziel on March 9, and the Cowboys have the No. 4 spot on the pecking order for making waiver claims. The question now becomes whether a team below Dallas would squat on Manziel’s rookie contract. If he’s unclaimed, the question then becomes whether anyone will sign him as a free agent.

Johnny Manziel's father: If son doesn't get help, QB 'won't live to see his 24th birthday'

By Kate Hairopoulos , Staff Writer Contact Kate Hairopouloson Twitter:@kHairopoulos

Johnny Manziel's family is concerned for his well-being, but the NFL quarterback has twice declined to be admitted to area rehabilitation facilities in the last week, according to his father, Paul Manziel.

"I truly believe if they can't get him help, he won't live to see his 24th birthday," Paul Manziel told The Dallas Morning News.

On Friday, Manziel's agent Erik Burkhardt also voiced concern for Manziel and announced that he is terminating their professional relationship.

The family first tried Saturday afternoon to get Manziel, 23, to agree to go to the Enterhealth Ranch addiction facility in Van Alstyne, but he would not stay. That attempt came the day after Manziel's former girlfriend alleged in a police report that he hit her repeatedly at a Dallas hotel and while driving her home to Fort Worth on Jan. 29. Manziel has not been charged in the incident, but a Fort Worth Police helicopter searched the area for him.

^ that's a worry, but there is such a he said, she said, back & forth going on with this girlfriend that it actually makes me hopeful that won't be the outcome. he needs help though that is for sure. good luck to him.

It's now a little more than he said/she said, and she hasn't said much....

Report: Manziel ordered to stay away from ex-girlfriend for two years

By Sid Saraf

Feb 5, 2016 at 5:14p ET

Things are piling up against Johnny Manziel.

A judge in Tarrant County (Texas) has issued an order of protection, which states that the Cleveland Browns quarterback must stay away from his ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley for two years. He also must pay $12,000 in legal fees.

The judge stated that "the court finds there is reason to believe that family violence occurred," according to Rebecca Lopez of WFAA TV in Dallas.

Details of an alleged incident between Manziel and Crowley that took place on Jan. 30 emerged on Thursday evening. Crowley said -- according to a police report -- that Manziel hit her several times and the latter said, "shut up or I'll kill us both." Manziel also allegedly told Crowley that he would "take my car and go kill himself."

This is becoming a really sad story.  His family is publicly begging him to get help.  Nbc nightly news covered it...

Was Johnny Manziel  hit hard in his college days?

This makes me smile :)

There was a time when the NFL played second fiddle to its older collegiate brother, as well as to Major League Baseball. As an example, there was a significant fear when the Cleveland Browns were founded in 1946 that they would not be able to compete in popularity with local college favorites such as John Carroll, Baldwin-Wallace, and Case Western Reserve (all now Division III teams).

no, an order of protection is the epitome of he said, she said. it's not hard to get one, particularly for domestic problems. he has denied her claims and it's civil court, there are no charges. yet anyway.

Interesting little twist in the CBA may prevent Browns from cutting Manziel until criminal proceedings are over and done.  Sheesh.

The media is running with that sinister "perp" shot of Manziel in CLEVELAND BROWNS uniform and hat.

Whoever said that any publicity is good publicity obviously wasn't thinking of this.
