I feel bad for him, but I feel better for the team with McCown out there.  And we have two rookies to try out before next year's draft.

Wouldn't it be so Browns if the RG3 injury + McCown = more wins, thus knocking the Browns out of drafting the first overall pick?

The two rookies who have shown the most promise, Corey Coleman and Carl Nassib, each broke a hand this week. The football gods really do hate the Browns.

I thought so too until I saw this week's injury reports from around the NFL....

And even though Minnesota has fewer injuries, they have them to key people. Of course they have more good players than the Browns do.

I actually enjoyed watching that game yesterday.  With the way Kessler started out, I thought we were going to get run out of the building before halftime.  But this team has some fight in it.  If our kicker doesn't hurt himself earlier in the week in walk throughs (still struggling with how that happens), we probably win.

Any analysis of yesterday has to start with Terrelle Pryor.  Wow.  That was one helluva performance.  He's definitely found a home and the sky is the limit for him.  One of the most uniquely talented players in the league.  Imagine when Gordon comes back and you can line those two up on the outside, with Coleman in the slot.  Scary.

I can probably throw he ball harder than Kessler, but he showed some smarts and poise yesterday.  He's not the QB of the future, but there is something there there.

The Crow and Duke Johnson are a nice 1-2 punch at RB.  I actually feel pretty good about our skill positions on offense and am not sure the last time I could say that.  Maybe when Braylon and K2 had their 1,000 yard seasons?

A few players stood out on defense.  This Kindred kid at safety is a playmaker.  And Davis was a good pickup at ILB.

We still have a looooooong way to go in terms of development and talent.  But I feel that the players are playing hard for Hue Jax...... much moreso than the past 3-4 regimes.

They will lose 2 more QB's this season along with a couple other injuries. They will finish with the worst record this year, Haslam will fire Hue because Haslam sucks. Hue will then latch on with another team as either a HC or assistant and win a SUper Bowl within 3 years.

They could go 0-16 and Hue won't get fired.  They hired him as part of a longer term vision.

Lots of ups and downs yesterday. Like you I'm mostly optimistic for the future. And especially looking forward to see Gordon back on the field. The defense isn't the steel curtain by any means, long long way to go there. But every game they're giving the effort.

Austin Pasztor should be benched, and possibly cut, for his performance yesterday.  For 1 player to receive 5 penalties in 1 game is absurd -- Terry Pluto, in his many, many years of covering the Browns said he's never seen it happen before.  Surely we can find a decent ORT somewhere.

Obviously we also need to find a suitable backup FG kicker...

Otherwise, I found mostly positives yesterday.  Unlike the 1st 2 games, we didn't shutdown after halftime when we faced some adversity (yesterday we scored our first 2nd half points!!!!).

Aside from his disastrous 1st series, I thought Kessler recovered and had a nice game.  I was particularly impressed with that 3rd and long, scramble, pass that kept our TD drive alive; and then he passed for the 2-pt conversion.  This kid has got a little juice... Hue Jackson may turn out to be genus in selecting Kessler in contravention of all the public head-scratching for the  pick... Terrelle Pryor was simply amazing, mainly at WR but also under center -- he's been so dominating as a receiver, I tend to forget he was a QB ... at mighty Ohio State, at that.  He can be an option given our current QB  MASH unit; but as I indicated, Cody Kessler held his own.  Crowell and Johnson did nice work running the ball...

... and, oh yeah, our Defense under Ray Horton really stepped up when we needed them in crunch time in the 4th... Shelton had a nice game.

Hue Jackson seems to be steering the ship in the right direction.  He made a couple tactical mistakes imho.  I would not have taken a knee to set up the 46-yard FG with shaky Parkey after we recovered Miami's fumble with 20 seconds and 1 timeout... Obviously Kessler's a rookie, but he showed enough poise that I would have trusted him to try and move us into a better FG position with that kind of time...

Also, I would definitely have received in OT... Oh well, it was a promising effort.  If we continue to play this way, we will get some wins and be headed in the right direction.  We have a number of offensive weapons which will only get better once borderline superstar Josh Gordon comes off suspension after Game 4.

I'd like to see other teams #2 CBs try to defend Pryor and nickel-backs trying to cover Coleman.  We may finally have a WR unit which strikes fear into our opponents.  Not sure when the last time we could say that with a straight face...

The best thing that could happen for the Browns is to go 0-16. I don't think they will, but as long as they get the #1 overall pick, then I'm happy.

I can't believe we played that well without:

Our #1 QB

Our #2 QB

Our #1 WR

Our #1 D lineman vet

Our #1 D lineman rook

Our #1 DB

Our #1 kicker

I'm worried less about the future of this team. QB still remains as the top question mark. That can get answered in April 2017 if we continue to lose more than any other team this year. I'm not one of those pining for Carson Wentz or regretting that we didn't pick him. The choice was Wentz or a team. The Browns drafted a team with these picks the Browns got for their #2 overall pick plus their fourth and fifth-round pick this year and a fourth-round pick in 2017.With the picks they acquired, the Browns gained:

+ WR Corey Coleman (first round, 15th overall)

+ OT Shon Coleman (third round, 76th overall)

+ QB Cody Kessler (third round, 93rd overall)

+ WR Ricardo Louis (fourth round, 114th overall)

+ S Derrick Kindred (fourth round, 129th overall)

+ WR Jordan Payton (fifth round, 154th overall)

+ OT Spencer Drango (fifth round, 168th overall)

+ LB Scooby Wright III (seventh round, 250th overall)

Plus, a swap of seventh-round picks on Day 3 led to the team acquiring cornerback Jamar Taylor from Miami. The Browns also acquired the Eagles' first-round pick in 2017, the Titans' second-round pick in 2017 and the Eagles' second-round pick in 2018.

The Browns pass-blocking is a mess. Erving was a mess. Pasztor was a mess. Their run-blocking has been decent, as the Browns are ranked in the top 10 in rushing offense so far. I think it's time to give Shon Coleman and/or Spencer Drango a shot on the O-line. Other than that, I'm actually excited to see what this pass offense can do -- especially when Gordon, Pryor and Corey Coleman (plus TE Gary Barnidge & Duke Johnson) all get on the field together at the same time.

I'm also not so worried about the defense anymore. They're not the sieve I thought they were. I'm extremely impressed with S Derrick Kindred. Kid looks like a big time hard-hitter and has a real nose for the ball.

Browns need more D-line help, but I do love Carl Nassib. Christian Kirksey is playing very well at ILB. I'd like to see LB Dominique Alexander get on the field. And the secondary is better than they were last year, but we still need more CB help.

I figured the Browns would be a mess in the first month of the season, since few of their best players played together in the preseason. The first month I consider to be the Browns extended preseason. Then they get Gordon back. Considering how many draft picks the Browns have in 2017 and their cap space, this year vs next is literally when a team can go from worst to first, or at least to really bad to pretty good. :)

... I really like Carl Nassib.  Very solid pick at DE.  He looks like a keeper.

I would have loved to see Coleman, Pryor and Gordon working with Wentz (assuming he didn't get killed every time he took a snap!)

^We wouldn't have Coleman if we took Wentz

^^^Not so sure about Kirksey.  He hasn't stood out to me.  Davis has... but not Kirksey.

^^^Not so sure about Kirksey.  He hasn't stood out to me.  Davis has... but not Kirksey.

PFF has graded Kirksey near 80 so far among defenders, a very high grade, this season. Only the very best players typically rank higher. For example, Terrelle Pryor's performance yesterday ranked at 85.4. Kirksey's strong game yesterday graded at 83.8.

I think Derrick Kindred jumped off the screen yesterday. He started for Ibraheim Campbell who was out with a hammy. I'm a Campbell fan and would rather see him and Kindred on the field together, rather than Poyer who's average at best. Kindred flew to the ball and tackled with ferocity. Soon, receivers are going to hear footsteps when they go across the middle against the Browns. And those footsteps will be Kindred's.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

I agree about Kindred.  I thought he also flashed in week one (I didn't watch week two as I was in the car coming back from C-Bus).

Browns color rush uni's which they won't wear for their Thursday night game with the Ratbirds in Baltimore because the NFL decided they would clash too much with the all purple of the ravens. But isn't that the point of the color rush games? Both teams should wear them right? ...right.

No one will say.  I think the timing with the results of the paternity test is not coincidental.  He may have got that news and relapsed, thus knowing that he would fail his next test.  Or, perhaps that shock of realizing he fathered a child and missed the first year of that girl's life, had a profound effect on him and caused him to take a drastic step towards a cleaner life.

I've been really impressed by Pryor.  He looks like he put in a ton of work at WR and his routes are sharp.  What an athlete, and props to Hue Jackson and the rest of the Browns org. on pushing him, as it looked like it was close to him falling out of the league.

^ If that story was true, there would be a police report.

...or, perhaps, that the news enhanced the tremendous pressure he was under, which he notes, and caused him to fire up a joint.

You just can't make this stuff up. Another blown chance at a W we could have been 3-1 right now. I feel like I just watch the browns now for the love of the sport and not the team.

Of course! I watch college and nfl football for love of the sport. I watch Browns football for the same reason I watch car races -- for the horrific crashes.

Ha! I made that same nascar analogy to a friend last night.

There were two NFL teams that decided to end their games improbably with three consecutive turnovers. And I had the misfortune of watching both of them.

Seriously, this post made me laugh out loud because I was thinking the same thing! No need to turn on the game and ruining a perfect sports weekend.

Well once again, another competitive game from a young team.  I'm already excited for 2017!

Agreed, however this year it feels different.  We have a rookie QB that is competing.  We have a young defense that's competing.  And other than the New England game, most have been entertaining.

Did you copy/paste that from Haden's & Ward's rookie season?  Only difference from that year to this year is that team actually won some games.  Things will be different when they are different.

The Cavs have won an NBA championship.

The Indians are in the World Series, again.

The Browns are, well they are the Browns.

They are bringing down the high our sports teams are currently on.

I love my Browns and do not want them to leave, but they need to step up!

My second Browns game of 2016.  The upper decks are very very light.  There we probably more people at the Gateway complex than at CBS.

Crossing fingers for a win.

The Browns suck. Total team loss today that required a trifecta of bad coaching, horrendously bad tackling and timely awfulness from QB Jake McCown.

The long march to the draft continues.

Cleveland sports has three children: two Rhodes scholars and one high-school dropout....

I have been saying for at least two seasons that you can't run a defensive scheme which depends on your LBs making plays if you don't have any play-making LBs.

Now go out and get me an ILB who can make plays at or behind the line of scrimmage.

Absolutely. I wanted them to draft Jatavis Brown, but the Browns never listen to me.

Collins is a definite upgrade, an actual NFL player with experience and everything..  But he's not a natural pass rusher and probably ends up at ILB, while the Browns #1 priority next year in the draft remains a legit pass rusher.  Myles Garrett looking like the guy thus far.

Garrett is playing well against lesser competition this year and getting beat up by good teams who are focusing on him. He's been bit by the injury bug this year, but he's still a tremendous force.

I'd take Jabrill Peppers.  Stud from Day 1 at Michigan.  He has as much to do with that program's turnaround as Harbough.  Guaranteed he will have a good NFL career.

What Does An 0-7 Start Tell You About An NFL Coach?

By Chase Stuart

If good things are supposed to come in threes, nobody told the Cleveland Browns. This year, the Cavaliers won the NBA championship in remarkable fashion, and the Indians are currently playing in the World Series. Meanwhile, Cleveland’s other major professional sports team is 0-7, the last remaining winless team in the 2016 NFL season.

The Browns hired Hue Jackson to lead the team’s latest rebuilding effort in a move that was regarded as one of the best coaching hires of the offseason. In an offseason in which the Browns also brought in Paul DePodesta as chief strategy officer to turn the franchise around, it seemed like Cleveland had its coach of the future. But Jackson is now just the 17th coach since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 to fail to win a game in his team’s first seven contests.

.

.

.

.

Although the recent examples are pretty ugly — and caution against giving any unsuccessful head coach too long of a leash — there are two inspiring names on the list for Browns fans.

The late ‘80s Cowboys were a mess, just like the current Browns. In 1988, Dallas went 3-13, and replaced legendary head coach Tom Landry with Jimmy Johnson. The Cowboys went 1-15 in Johnson’s rookie season, with the sole victory coming in Washington in Week nine. Johnson quickly turned around the Cowboys in part because of his ability to accumulate high draft picks, a strategy that Jackson’s Browns are currently employing.

Those Cowboys have been the blueprint for preaching patience in coaching, particularly when a coach takes over a bad team. Dallas went 36 straight games from 1988 to 1990 as underdogs; Johnson’s Cowboys weren’t favored to win a game until the 30th game of his coaching tenure. And this year’s Browns have been underdogs in every game this season, a sign of the poor roster Jackson is coaching.2 Inheriting a terrible roster sometimes means a team has to get worse before it can get better, and that’s exactly what happened in Dallas: The Cowboys went 1-15, 7-9, 11-5, 13-3 and 12-4 in Johnson’s five seasons with the team, with those last two campaigns ending in Super Bowl championships. 3

And then there is Bill Walsh, the legendary 49ers coach who won three Super Bowls during his decade with the team. He inherited a San Francisco roster that was low on talent: The team sunk to 2-14 in 1978, and was without a first round pick in 1979 (which turned out to be the first overall pick) after trading those rights to Buffalo for O.J. Simpson the previous year.

San Francisco went 0-7 out of the gate in 1979 under Walsh, eventually finishing 2-14. And the 49ers improved to only 6-10 in 1980, before Walsh’s influence on the team began to take hold. From 1981 to 1988, San Francisco won over 70 percent of its games, the best mark in the NFL, and won three Super Bowls. And as with Johnson, the fruits of his work yielded additional success after he left, with the 49ers winning a fourth Super Bowl in 1989 and a fifth in 1994.
