Seems like Dorsey got impatient with the lack of reps for those behind him.

shoot i liked carlos. it seems like another rushed trade. rushed for no reason ???

too bad we could not get a wr for him. some who doesnt want dez bryant $$$ that is. wr’s are in short supply this time of year.

Maybe we'll make the playoffs this year.  Maybe Baker Mayfield will be the savior of the Browns.  Maybe our defense will be awesome.  Maybe Jabrill Peppers will return kicks for TDs left and right.  Maybe our receivers will be good this year.  Maybe we won't get so many dump penalties at inopportune times.  Maybe we won't keep snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.  Maybe we won't find new ways to lose every week.

Nope.  The Browns are still the Browns.

On the bright side, the Browns are one game closer to being rid of Hue Jackson.

On the dark side, it won't matter anyway because NFL officiating hates the Browns.

No, helmet-to-helmet hits are totally cool now.  And a ball isn't caught unless the receiver grabs it with both hands, brings it in, gets both feet down, tucks it into his arm to run, starts to turn with it...and makes sweet, sweet love to it.  It's not a completed pass if he doesn't finish!

Officiating didn't lose us that game.

We have the talent to be 6-1 and have coached our way to 2-4-1.

I agree.  Although a couple calls may have been questionable, we had a ton of dumb, clear penalties.  Also, the reception/fumble play was not a fumble by NFL rules.  I don't like the rule, but it says that you not only have to secure the ball and come down on your feet, but then make a football move before it can be a fumble.  The receiver caught it, his two feet came down, but then it was knocked loose just before he tried to make a move.  By definition, this is an incomplete pass.  I think the rule should just be "ball is secured, receiver has two feet down," but then my beef is with the rule and not the officials.

Regardless, we had opportunities that we blew and made a lot of mistakes.  I think that a 4th and goal QB sneak was a terrible call.  Try again to punch it in with Chubb or roll Mayfield out and throw to Njoku or something.  EVERYONE saw the sneak coming.  Also, remember that we wouldn't have even gone to overtime had the Bucs' kicker not missed both an XP and a short game winning FG.

When Baker got the ball stripped on that otherwise first down run I knew the football gods wouldn't let the Browns win it.

It would be easy to fix an issue here or there, but I'm not sure what's wrong with these guys. So many games in this league are very close ones, and the Browns just don't seem to know how to get over yet. Hue makes himself a bigger target with everything he says to the media, but it's hard to blame him for Njoku's drops, the Peppers fumble or the defense letting the Bucs get into FG range on that last pass.

I forgot about that play.  We should have taken the 3 points anyway.

Hue's desperate, and it shows in his coaching.

What do we attribute to Hue and what do we attribute to Todd Haley?

p.s. Jeff didn't you have that thirst-inducting Elliot Ness pic before?

Ha, I did.  I didn't even notice it was gone until you mentioned it.

There is a lot of talent on the team but they still have a lot of knuckleheads. The trick is to coach up the knuckleheads so they don’t make dumb mistakes or dumb penalties. There were a variety of dumb mistakes the browns had in the game. On one nice gain they flagged Jarvis for happy feet. He never got his feet set and he wasn’t even integral to the play. They lost a 20 yard gain and ended up punting that drive. I think Perriman committed a couple of dumb penalties.  I remember the one for holding that was well after the running back had passed but i thought he had another on special teams too.

I distinguish between penalties that are from getting competitive advantage or being overly aggressive vs unnecessary penalties for players that are lined up wrong or holding, blocking in the back nowhere near the play.  The Browns have a lot of the latter year in and out.

Yeah, not saying that's why we lost.  I would put the blame on penalties, primarily.  The drops weren't as bad, though still too many.  Special teams also seemed improved, though Peppers fumble was the last nail in our coffin yesterday.

Hugo Cruz, official who missed false start vs. Browns, fired for overall performance

The NFL has fired down judge Hugo Cruz, a source confirmed for cleveland.com. Browns fans will remember Cruz as the official who missed an obvious false start in the Browns' loss to the Chargers in Week 6.

Cruz’s termination is not related to that single missed call, as the league does not terminate officials over one call. NFL officials are held to a standard that, if it is not met over a sustained period, they face consequences, which can include termination.

That non-call, however, riled up Browns fans and players. Facing third-and-6 from the Browns' 29-yard line, Chargers left tackle Russell Okung clearly started before the ball was snapped. Quarterback Philip Rivers completed a touchdown pass to Tyrell Williams, putting Los Angeles ahead, 21-3, with 45 seconds remaining in the first half.

Now are they going to fire the ref who said hitting a QB in the head was okay?

Was in Norman for Oklahoma's K State game.  Cleveland #6 jerseys were very common.  Weird to see.

Wow...

Hue Jackson is out, per Adam Schefter.

Very Stable Genius

Wonder if it will be Haley or Williams taking over

Al Saunders taking over as head coach. Was a former head coach. Smart move as it keeps the coordinators in place. Only downside -- he's 71.

If the Crew is saved, then must become a Browns fan. Just the way it is. I do like orange and brown together lol.

ughhh -- i gave hue a lot of slack, more than many, but even i was at the end of my patience. i don't think the o is very good, its been over rated, but whatever, we should get a couple more wins hopefully. something to build on.

AND TODD HALEY FIRED!!

I just don't get why you wouldn't fire Hue after 1-31.  Sure, the talent was lacking...but he wasn't elevating the team either.  And now you dump your new OC after 8 weeks?

Very Stable Genius

Dumping the OC at this point is WILD. There had to have been issues beyond mere schematics, because this is the type of move that will implode a locker room if done for the wrong reasons.

they should play with no hc. just make it a pick up game. designate player coach baker. see what happens.

No issue at all seeing Haley hit the road. Over the past few Sundays I clearly saw our #1 pick turning into Charlie Frye 2.0. This dumb offense appears to have been designed to get Baker Mayfield killed. It sucks.

I think the Steelers defense were still hitting him while he was getting on the bus.

And

Got my wish. Glad Freddie is the new OC....

Word is Haley had been working backchannels to get Hue fired.  Paying more attention to his career than his job.

Man, the Browns are a mess of an organization. With all the close games they've had this season, it seemed like things were starting to turn around, even if the record didn't really show it. Now you have a mid-season complete shake up, with the head coach gone, offensive coordinator gone, and a rookie QB who came in mid-season, too. What is gained from making these coaching moves now opposed to in the off season? It's just constant turbulence from the Browns.

10-5-1, here we come!

(And if you buy that, I'll also bet you the under on the Cavs winning 76 games.)

This, if true, should haunt him. What owner or head coach will trust him?

Also, Kitchens looks like a "hand it to the blocking back" type of guy haha.

Terry Francona was hired on October 8, 2012 as the manager of the Indians.  Since then these head coaches have been fired in Cleveland:

-Browns: Pat Shurmur, Rob Chudzinski, Mike Pettine, Hue Jackson

-Cavs: Byron Scott, Mike Brown, David Blatt, Tyronn Lue

Been through this before,  team implodes under interim coach. Bring in new hot commodity coach or whatever Browns can get in the offseason. New rebuilding for new scheme. Dumpster fire rages. 2 more pathetic years, start process over with new coach again.

I still think the thing that set the team back the most was firing Chud after 1 season

Because the situation at Berea was toxic between Hue and Haley. This needed to happen and soon. There are a lot of young players on the team and we don't need them, especially Mayfield, to get screwed up like Kizer was.

And just because changes are being made doesn't mean something bad has happened. Dorsey was forced to have Hue as his coach when Dorsey was hired. Haslam needs to figure out how to establish an organizational hierarchy. You hire a GM to hire your coach who hires his coordinators and the rest of the coaching staff. They've done it bass-ackwards since Haslam came aboard.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

BTW, look for Special Teams Coach Amos "The Anus" Jones to get the heave-ho soon too. Maybe kicker Greg Joseph will be gone too.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

The thing is they are 2-5-1 after 8 games. They could very easily be 6-2 if they got a few bounces and had a kicker who could make a field goal and that would include wins over Pitts and New Orleans. THis is better than Baltimore , Pitts or Cincinnati. If they were 6-2 there is a 90% chance of making the playoffs. Coming off an 0-16 season, this is positive momentum.

I think Haslam realized he was wrong to fire Chud, so he swore an oath to keep his next coach longer than two years, even if all the evidence in the world says don't.  Hue Jackson lasted this long just to burnish Haslam's personal reputation.  Dorsey should never have been forced to work with him.  We needed a full reboot after last year.

Sean McVay is the Vegas favorite to be Hue's replacement. I assume that's just because he's an Ohio boy but wow.

LOL! Why the hell would McVay want to leave the undefeated LA Rams for the perpetual mess Browns? The Rams have a good thing going in LA- lots of fan support, moving to what will surely be one of the nicest football stadiums in the country in a year or two, great team and coaching staff. I see no reason why he'd leave to coach any team, let alone the Browns.

If it weren't for the Tribe, Cleveland sports would be a real dumpster fire.

the staff and players should flip the script and get a bounty going on interim hc gregg bountygate williams for some wins. what a mess of an organization. ugh it just never ends.

I like him, and I'm sure he'd love to be an NFL head coach,  especially here.

Meanwhile, things are already calming down in Berea after the trash was taken out...

And, with yesterday's moves, the Browns are finally at risk of stumbling into a functional organizational structure....

Honestly, since we're not going to beat the Chiefs.... I'm just looking for A) A significant reduction in penalty yards. B) Improved pass protection calls from Baker on obvious zone blitzes. C) More verticality in the passing game to Njoku and Ratley.

If we get better at each of those three, we'll be a tough team to beat.

Suggestions: move Bitonio to LT, put Corbett at RG, and replace Hubbard with Robinson then give them two weeks during the bye to practice together.

Also, I'm hoping the Browns make a move before today's trade deadline. Rumor is Tyrod Taylor and Jamie Collins are on the trade block. I hope that a WR and a CB are being considered to address those thin positions.

Cannot overstate how underrated Jamie Collins is. He catches sooo much heat, but the man blows up O-Line pulls and combos like a dang grenade - and that's crucial to our run D.

I think he's overrated. He takes horrible angles on running plays and invariably plays chase-em on pass patterns by TEs.
