The thing is, when Pig Ben declines it is going to happen fast, and his ego is going to cause him to hold on as long as he can.   Mason Rudolph is going to be good, but perhaps elsewhere.

I know Myles has painted a target on him, but should maybe quit watching Turkey Joe videos.  ?

That article says they know the Browns are coming so they are talking trash now before the Browns clobber them and win the division.  Should be a fun season.

^ so has anybody seen this car around town? i mean you would know — it would be hard to miss.

I don't remember how to do a poll here. Perhaps only the person who started the thread can add a poll? @ColDayMan

My poll would be to ask for predictions of the Browns' record for the 2019 season. Mine would be 10-6.

If the offensive line was stronger, I'd go 11-5 or even 12-4. But Baker gets rid of the ball so quickly and has such good pocket presence, he can make a mediocre OL look decent. I still want to see how Seibert does as a kicker. I want to see a better strong safety (missing you already, Jabrill). I want to make see if the LBers have focused on their tackling fundamentals this offseason. I want see more depth at TE.

The strengths of the team are where it matters most -- starting quarterback, defensive line, wide receiver, secondary, running back, starting TE, linebackers. And yes, I think the LBers are going to be stronger than I originally expected prior to training camp. Schobert looks to have improved his tackling and I like the raw abilities of Mack Wilson and Sione TakiTaki. Looking to see more of them as the year goes on and especially going into next year.

Leading man: QB Baker Mayfield brings hope, hype to Browns

By TOM WITHERS AP Sports Writer
CLEVELAND (AP) — The service elevator door slides open and Baker Mayfield politely waits for his wife, Emily, to exit and then follows her down a hallway into the downtown hotel’s restaurant. Before beginning a photo shoot for a recently signed endorsement deal, the Browns’ swaggering, second-year quarterback looks out the giant floor-to-ceiling windows 32 stories above Cleveland. On this clear August afternoon, sailboats slice across Lake Erie’s blue-green waters just beyond the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, while sun bathers dot the grassy mall where LeBron James and the Cavaliers paraded following their NBA championship three years ago. A few blocks south, just past construction cranes symbolizing the city’s rise, the Indians push toward a possible playoff spot in the early innings of a day/night doubleheader. As Mayfield looks toward FirstEnergy Stadium, home of the Browns, the empty orange seats seem to glow.
“Awesome view,” Mayfield says. Clearly, he’s on top of Cleveland.

^ I like Tom Withers. Also liking this quote.

“There are characteristics and values that I have that go hand in hand with what the people of Cleveland have,” Mayfield tells The Associated Press. “I think all natural relationships happen very quickly because it’s meant to be, and I think this is one of those things where it was just meant to be. I relate to the people here on a lot of facets: the blue-collar work ethic mentality and just embracing it.

He's wrong. They were worse.....

A ridiculously bad performance for a season opener at home by the new, apparently same old Browns . Undisciplined, unprepared and even more disappointing than usual - way too much hype for a team that hasn’t won a thing yet.. Freddie and the boys have a lot of work to do and quickly.

Thank you Freddie for giving most of your starters the pre-season off. They were so out of sync that I think they set some sort

of team record for penalties. This one is on Freddie. Somewhere out there Hue Jackson enjoyed this game.

It's just one game. We'll see what happens next.

In a way I'm glad it happened. It will chase away all the media blowing up their heads as "America's Team."   No matter how much talent they have, they still have to put in the work and be humble.   Now is that time.

It was Referee Brad Allen who threw the flag after he told Lawrence "Watch where the f*ck you're going" and Lawrence replied "F*ck you." Both were unprofessional. Only Lawrence has been penalized for it.

Hopefully someone is monitoring those ref's bank accounts and those of relatives, associates, etc..... That was very strange how yesterday's game was called....

Yeah, I'm hoping that a punch in the nose gets these guys to settle down and focus.  Because they came out yesterday like they thought they were the toughest most talented kids on the playground.  But they were up against professionals who just did what they were supposed to do.

OBJ being out there with the stupid watch thing really burns me.  That's exactly what I fear about this guy, or any of the narcissistic superstar wideouts (seriously why are they all headcases?).  I fear he cares more about his celebrity brand than playing football.

OBJ was looking good last night...

Alright folks... I like to consider myself the resident jock/bro/douche/biff amongst those of you more intellectually capable than myself... so here's my summary of last night...

Offense

QB: Baker struggled. Point blank, period. The pass to OBJ was actually a run-pass-option, and the moment the weakside linebacker vacated on a blitz, Odell was money all day. Great read by Baker there, but that same play is used in high school schemes. Here's what I'm more concerned about: Baker was prepared for the game, as Gregg Williams loves to play man, and that's what Baker was prepared for. However, the Jets played a TON of zone yesterday and Baker was unable to adjust. In particular, you'd see Adams line up showing man and bail at the snap, which few safeties in the league can do - nonetheless BAKER NEEDS TO MAKE POST-SNAP reads as well as he does pre-snap. The good news is, that will come with time, and most teams won't want to risk a big play to OBJ, Landry, Callaway, et al as the season progresses and thereby won't be willing to shift so drastically post-snap.

Accuracy-wise Baker was on his back foot a lot. Freddie had a REALLY nice play call in the 2nd quarter, with Landry running a flat route with a curl overtop - a staple "3 beater" route. Sure enough, the Jets came out in Cover 3, and Landry was in stride in the flat, with about 20 yards of green in front of him and Baker just sailed it. I'd love to see him start nailing the short and intermediate routes next week.

WR: Honestly, not great. I know OBJ had a great game on paper, but the group as a whole did not block well, at all. This is particularly problematic when 20% of our office is designed tunnel and bubble screens to get OBJ and Landry the ball in space. This will improve though, our WR's are a physical group, and I think this was a momentary lapse over a trend.

RB: Nick Chubb is great. Not much to say other than that. Kid works hard and finds any seam. I'd like to see us go to more zone runs than man, however, as I think Nick really does well when he's given latitude to find creases.

OL: Actually, not bad at all. As noted above, we compensate for our athletic deficiency when we go to zone schemes. Bitonio might be the best guard in football at getting front-side scoop blocks, working the 1/2 technique and working his way to the playside linebacker. Greg Robinson had some excellent pass sets against a wide 9 technique OLB. Our man blocking needs to improve, but being a realist, I'm not sure we have the dudes to go hat on hat in a man scheme. Zone running should be our focus.

Defense

LB: Kirksey and Schobert were all over the field. These two guys are personal favorites of mine. In terms of pure athletic ability, they're both probably in the bottom 20% of the NFL, but my God are they instinctive and aggressive, which more than compensates. Kirksey clearly has been devoting himself to film, as Gase called an EXCELLENT screen in the first quarter, and Kirksey - who was the only member of the D not fooled - made the TFL

DL: a GREAT performance. Myles Garrett and Olivier Vernon are special - though I wish we could see more of Genard Avery as a wide 9 technique. Here's the thing, I'm totally fine with the occasional offsides penalty from Myles, but he needs to cool with the roughing the passers. Even though I didn't agree with the first call - he will get a reputation and will begin to be officiated with a microscope. Dominant nonetheless.

DB: Not going to give a grade here. Cannot give a grade if you know the students have the answers before the test lol.

And our special teams played well, too.

All around a positive game... but we still need to reduce the penalties, and Baker needs to work on his post-snap reads this week, because the Rams are the real f**** deal

while enjoyable to watch, i didn't get much from this game other than i was happy to see a successful kicking game. i mean yeah the ol was ok against a weak team and we already know myles is the best player in the nfl. anyway, good to have the win.

This offense has no flow to it. A lot of coloring outside the lines by Mayfield, just kind of sloppy. I'd like to see more plays designed to get rid of the ball earlier. Concern is there's too much on the shoulders of a young, inexperienced QB.

It's not though. Baker has over a dozen starts under his belt and two NFL pre-seasons. It's not unreasonable to ask him to make post-snap reads. If he wants to be a franchise QB, he needs to progress at a more rapid rate than Winston, Tannehill, and even Trubisky. Otherwise he'll never realize his potential and never learn to throw over a D-Line that is usually 4-6" taller than him

He did, no doubt.  Of course, he had to wear some sort of unapproved visor, which got him pulled off the field on 3rd and goal.  But at least he made a play that he wasn't on the field for still all about him!  Whatever, if he turns in those kinds of numbers consistently he's worth it- and the one handed catch was the most amazing play of the game!

The game was fun.  As it was a must win for the Browns.  Lots of mistakes were made, the will need to be remedied, immediately.

I have to say, it's was the best Browns game I've been to in NYC.  There tons of Browns fans all over Manhattan. It felt like a home game.  Going to the game, the train was full of Browns fans.  The people seated behind us, at the game, were from Ravenna or Rootstown.   It was not a perfect game, but it was a "W".  It was great to stay to the end and have all those pissed off JETS fans fuming. Especially thing 1 and 2.

This is so true.  In my office they are mostly stinkin' Giants fans.  I love that they cannot talk ?  Thing 1 and Thing 2 are massive Yankees, Giants, Knicks fans. They stapled the faces of all the new Browns QBs to my door to rub in how bad the Browns are.  So anytime a Cleveland sports team beats a NYC team I love it and rub it in.  They bought the whippersnapper Giants and Jets jerseys, telling him he had to be a Jets/Giants fan, because he is born NYer, even though he lives in my house.

i need the Browns to win today, so that my staff in LA will stop talking ?.

All this Superbowl talk has gone to Browns and Browns fans heads.  I would settle for a winning record THIS year.  If they were a wild card, that would a happy plus.  I dont see them winning the division this year.  I want them to play hard each week. That first game was a real stinker!  I have a feeling we're in store for a "Jekyll and Hyde" team this season.

Have you tried Fanatics?

I don't personally know boxer Shawn Porter from Akron, but he's reppin' hard on TV.  ??

My neighbor ordered his jersey at a discount from China. I joked it was gonna say “Bayfield” on the back.

@mrnyc if the Browns ever dare put that goofy elf on the uniform I’ll root for the Steelers lol.

Browns offense is bad. The offensive playcalling is bad. Baker panicking and running from a clean pocket into pressure is bad. Browns offense getting ZERO points off three defensive turnovers is bad. Being 1-2 while heading into the toughest part of the season is bad.

The Browns' next four opponents are:

At Baltimore Ravens
At San Francisco 49ers
Seattle Seahawks at home
At New England Patriots

For the Browns to end the season with a winning record, I anticipated that the Browns would have to be 2-1 at this point and win one of the next four. Now, I don't see that happening. I think the Browns will be 1-6 at the end of October.

I feel like he has that connection with Landry and Higgins.    If he can get their with OBJ, he would truly be dangerous.  Will OBJ be that guy?  I'm starting to believe what my Giants fans warned me about him....

This bad offense is mostly on the coaches. How do you not hand the ball off with a fresh set of downs 5 yds from the goal line and with THREE timeouts?

Stupid.

How do you run the ball with 4th and long?

Stupid.

Everyone at the bar tonight was laughing at the play calling, like watching the Browns of old.

Hate to say that windbag Collin Cowherd is right. Freddie Kitchens does look to be over his head. This is low IQ football.

I’ll post my breakdown later today.

I have A LOT to get off my chest. 90% directed at Browns “fans” and 10% are Freddie & Co.

First things first - the penalties are unacceptable; especially pre-snap penalties, that falls on Freddie's shoulders. Beyond that, alignment penalties are INSANE. In college, I knew if motion came my way I typically had to adjust and get on or off the line depending on how many we had flexed to a side. It's unacceptable and needs to be addressed.

Alright, as Frank Costanza would say: "I GOT A LOTTA PROBLEMS WITH YOU PEOPLE!!! AND NOW YOU'RE GONNA HEAR ABOUT IT!!"

Now, let me talk about the illustrious Cleveland Browns "fans" and "writers" out there. I remember growing up, thinking we had a really football literate fanbase - LOLOL I'm being proven wrong everyday; time for the airing of the grievances:

  1. There are people that want Freddie fired, already. BRUHHHHHHHHH! He is 3 games into being a head coach. Y'all do realize, we took the NFC Champions to the last play of the game... with 3 of our starting 4 DBs out... and about 3-4 game-altering penalty calls missed... in his 3rd game as HC. Anyone calling for his head is insufferable and the reason we can't have nice things.
  2. I realize the play calling was tough to watch at times, but let me share the following with you:
    1. The draw on 4th and 9 WAS NOT THE PLAY CALL - Freddie may fall on the grenade for that one - but that was not the call out of the huddle. I promise you.
    2. Everyone was complaining about not targeting OBJ more, which I understand - but he was doubled nearly the entire game. That's why his only availability was in the run-pass-options in the soft spot in Cover 2, or in space after a play breakdown. That's where we miss Njoku, a TE that can stretch the SCIF (Seam, Curl, Flat) defender means there is less over-the-top help available from safeties in zone. I think we'll see a lot more of Landry to the boundary with Odell next week to compensate for that, because Jarvis playing isolated to the field side has limited benefits.
  3. Browns "Writers" - OMG
    1. By the grace of God and thanks to about a dozen people I follow on Twitter, I was introduced to Jake Burns last night. Now Jake, bless his heart, appears to love the Browns and football. But my god... this dude had some of the. worst. takes. I have ever heard and then I realize he's got like a pretty sizable following of Browns fans.
      1. My man could not for the life of him understand why Baker kept "reverting to his scrambling tendencies from college" I'll tell you why, Jake... Because Aaron Donald is a freaking DUDE and because Wade Phillips called over a DOZEN zero blitz packages yesterday (0 blitz = everyone not manned up on a WR/TE/RB is coming) - Baker bailed on 2-3 clean pockets, but my god is that some low hanging fruit analysis.
      2. He also had some wild insight about how he "couldn't even decipher routes"... when the Rams were LINED UP IN COVER 6 TO THE BOUNDARY - meaning, the Trips set we had to the boundary don't necessarily run "routes", they find spaces - meaning, Odell likely had the "2 gap" the soft spot behind the corner and about parallel to the safety's alignment, Jarvis had a middle control, and Meech had SCIF contain deep (hold the safety to the middle, if safety bails, Meech is the read.)
      3. Then I saw that Jake is going to "diagnose film" tonight - and honestly based on his understanding of the game I think I might as well critique video of a neurosurgeon performing a frontal lobotomy. I don't say this to be a jerk, but this is one of the problem's I have with the day and age of fantasy football - everyone thinks they know what the hell they're talking about. I'm not writing a blog critiquing Jim Cramer's performance on Mad Money every night because I participated in a stock simulation in undergrad.
  4. I'm with everyone in re: Baker - don't get me wrong. As stated above he did have 2-3 clean pockets that he bailed on - BUT EVERY QB IN THE GAME NOT NAMED BREES OR BRADY does that. He needs to work on it, but it's not like the kid forgot how to walk. What he does need to work on, still, is post-snap reads. I know everyone was complaining about him holding the ball too long, and a lot of that can be remediated with a quick trigger brain after the snap. Wade Phillips played a TON of Cover 1 (man underneath with 1 safety shading to Odell) but showed it as Cover 3 pre-snap, Baker has to know that means backside slant or hitch within .5 second of the ball being snapped. He'll get better at it, I don't doubt him, just think he's hit a bit of a plateau. .

Issues with Freddie

  1. Per my comment above, Baker struggles with post-snap reads - Freddie needs to incorporate more motion in the game calling. I.e., if the Rams show cover 3, but we incorporate a Zip or Orbit motion, Cover 1 reveals itself, as the defender will run with his man - it's a simple fix, and I honestly think it's something that will come as Freddie settles into his own - which will come. That can also force a D to shift and eliminate double teams on Odell
  2. Discipline - pre-snap penalties are on the coach, period. False starts, illegal shifts, and illegal formations should be left behind in 8th grade.
  3. Predictability - Freddie threw slip screens to Chubb on (I think) four different 2&long situations, I don't hate the screen call, but we should tunnel to Odell or Jarvis or bubble to Chubb or Jarvis as well; though, he did call 2 of them right into the blitz, which was brilliant, though only 1 went for a big gain.

Takeaway

Y'all need to calm TF down. 10-6 is still a reasonable expectation for this team - especially in our division.

Sorry for the angst, but I needed to yell at someone.

With all of the problems, they did almost take the game into overtime-they were not blown out. They are getting crucified in the press-after three games.
