I don't understand how Rudolph gets off without a penalty.  He tried to rip off Garrett's helmet (unsuccessfully) then charged at Garrett and escalated the situation when it could have been over.  I don't understand...

Y'all will get my thoughts soon....

It was one of the best meals I'd ever eaten in my life... Until I found a pubic hair in my dessert...

It's a little bit tragic how the Browns went from the underdog everyone was rooting for last season to the villains of the NFL.

This hasn't been fun.

I haven't see anybody mention this yet but wasn't a Steeler trying to kick Garrett in the head when he was lying in the end zone?

He got suspended for three games.

did he get off? did i miss that? it said: "Additional discipline for other players will be forthcoming through the standard accountability process, including those players that left the bench to enter the fight area." doesn't that mean he still could get something?

otherwise, i don't understand either. it wouldn't be right.

Steelers are and have been a dirty team for a long time now. Unfortunately, the person who throws the initial punch is not the one punished, it is the person who retaliates.

They play a dirty brand of football. It is why AFC North teams are always getting into issues with them. Look at them and Cincinnati from a few years back. It is because the Bengals players started punching back to their cheap shots years ago. Same with the Ravens players. What is not being talked about is that it seems that whenever these types of incidents and fights in the NFL arise, it always seems to involve the dirty Steelers.

Not to defend Garrett, who certainly deserves a suspension, but up until last night, how many incidents over the last 5 years like this involved Cleveland players?? I would almost say maybe 1 at best.  now how many times do you hear Steelers players involved in something with another team. For the last 4 years it was Pittsburgh and Cincinnati getting really chippy. Pittsburgh and Baltimore had that too. Now it is Pittsburgh and the Browns.  All I am saying is that there is an overarching theme here and it always centers around the Steelers.  And no, it is not because they have been good for so long, it is because they are a dirty team.

here is something interesting to throw into the mix.

there appears to be an actual nfl rule for this kind of thing.

and the penalty is far from indefinite suspension:

NFL Rulebook: Rule 12, Section 2, Article 17: USE OF HELMET AS A WEAPON. A player may not use a helmet that is no longer worn by anyone as a weapon to strike, swing at, or throw at an opponent. PENALTY: Loss of 15 yards and an automatic disqualification.

A disqualification is the same as an ejection?

The Browns, especially under Haslam, keeps finding ways to embarrass Cleveland

Disagree, no coach should be having to take his starters out of the game because he thinks they just might go cuckoo bananas and start ripping people's helmets off and bashing them over the head with them.

You can't just gloss over that. Context matters. It was a legal hit, and not even that hard. Don't pick a fight if you don't want the consequences. Rudolph should have taken his lumps and moved onto next week.

^ that's my take on it, nobody got hurt afaik and there was some showboating about it. yes rudy boy could have gotten badly hurt, but he didn't. it just looked terrible on a national game, but was a bunch of nothing in the end.

That definitely wasn't a legal hit.  It was late- not super late, but late.  But after the initial contact Garrett continued wrestling Rudolph to the ground well after the initial hit then stayed on top after he took him to the ground.  I think he was trying to send Rudolph home with something to think about for a couple weeks, and was already outside the bounds of what's appropriate.  Rudolph definitely escalated some, and I wouldn't be against him getting a game off, but this started with Garrett and took it's worst turns via Garrett's escalations.

Draft a dirty a** player, live with the consequences when he does dirty a** things.

Was Rudolph innocent, no. However, it all started with Garrett with a late hit on Rudolph at the end of the game where this was not needed. This ticked off Rudolph to try to pull Garrett’s helmet off and then Garett went insane. Both weren’t in the right but Garett could have seriously injured Rudolph and I still can’t believe he did what he did.

When was the last time you were kicked in the nuts?   After being in a highly emotional and physical contest for the last 3 hours?   I'm not excusing Myles.....but Rudolph started the entire thing with the same feelings of frustration and emotions.

Miles should be out for the season, and Rudolph should get a game.

Garrett had a late takedown on Rudolph and sat on him then Rudolph escalated it then Garrett escalated it. I don’t like Rudolph either and he deserves a game.

^Full speed game situation I don't know if it would be fully apparent to Garrett that the ball was released already. Also the case could be made that Garrett was sitting on him because Mason had a hold of his helmet.

Agree Rudolph deserves time for his actions. But please, enough with the “he started it” bs. That argument sounds like something an 8 year old would say.  Adults are responsible for their actions 100% of the time...regardless if provoked.

I don't think that's what he's saying. I think what he is saying is that, in garbage time, and if starters are still playing, they tend to want to get their licks on the opponents' starters. And when I mean licks, I mean extra hard tackles or maybe a blindside shot, not trying to smash another player in the head with his own helmet.

There are lots of good reasons to take starters out of the game once it's outcome is no longer in doubt.  That your starters might start playing dirty and trying to hurt opposing players is not one of them.  Ever.

I don't think taking an extra hard shot is dirty. Some of the tackles the Browns made were definitely extra hard, but I don't think they were dirty. Although Randall's hit that got him ejected was uncalled for.

You can ask Trevor Siemian about his roughing the passer/late hit penalties, especially because Siemian isn't able to play this season due to one of those hits.

This is really getting ugly. Why would Garrett not report a racial slur immediately-and to the general media, the public, etc.?  Are there any witnesses, any evidence? If not this(particularly the timing)is just a bad look.

I don't know what to think...but the timing of it all looks very fishy. JMHO. smh  ☹️

I'm tired of this damn story. He's suspended and the Browns have a game on Sunday. Time to move on.

They were doing great...until the 28-3 curse. While the curse tried to wreak it's havoc, Cleveland succeeded in overcoming it and in the end prevailed, defeating both a crappy team and the dreaded 28-3 curse. Two wins instead of one. It is a much better spin I think.

There was a time in the not so distant past, the browns would actually lose a game like this, coming off a win, positive energy back in the fan base and....flop

For those wondering who is going to replace Myles Garrett for the rest of the season, I think the Browns have found their answer....

The dumb decision making of Freddie Kitchens continues. The Browns have a lot of talent this year - but it’s not being fully facilitated. Time and again, we’ve seen the head shaking playcall decisions, the lack of discipline, excessive penalties, etc.  Based on 12 regular season games and his body of work, it’s safe to conclude that Mr Kitchens was not ready for a head coaching job in the NFL. Those that were expecting an 8 game winning streak on the Browns part were reminded once again yesterday, by a weaker and better coached Steeler team, just how improbable that was.

Now, a 4 game winning streak to keep

gasping  playoff hopes alive will probably not be enough. But we can watch to see how the team progresses in December. Then, John Darcy’s decision will have to be - “Do I trust  the future Super Bowl hopes of this franchise in the hands of Freddie Kitchens?

And this wrong tweet is still up. I remember when @cnn was a news force....back in the previous century.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Well , I've finally calmed down and I'm sitting in the Philadelphia Airport, so why not...

Offense

  • The second half was Freddie's worst half of the year thus far. For Nick Chubb to only get 6 rushes is unacceptable, as is for Kareem Hunt to get zero.
  • Moreover, Odell the Steelers were shading a zone towards Odell about 70-80% of the time
    • This means that even when Odell got man coverage underneath, he would normally be bracketed with zone help in the secondary. This is part of the reason why Jarvis was able to get open so frequently
      • This is really upsetting because you almost never saw Odell come in motion across the formation. Motioning him would: a) reveal if the corner is manned up on him, and b) allow the Browns to use the Steelers pre-snap alignment against them in certain situations - though a coach as good as Tomlin would make adjustments.
    • Nonetheless, as a playcaller, you have to notice a tendency like that, because in effect you know what side of the field will have 6 versus 5 players, and you should be able to scheme accordingly - especially in run plays.
    • I'm not a huge fan of the RPO's as an extension of our run game -
      • Normally, Baker uses RPO's to freeze linebackers and can make throws to the seem or SCIF area of the field
        • When we call RPO's where the pass option is to the flat or a bubble screen, we tend to lose yards more than we gain, at least this week.
      • Additionally, Baker has been freezing himself on RPO's... If he makes the right read, he shouldn't have to be waiting for a receiver to get open - if he does, he should've given the handoff.
    • If we would have aligned Hunt as WR more often, he likely could have benefited from more motion in the offense, as we could have brought him across the formation, manned up by a LB and gotten him the ball in space or eventually turned that into a wheel route.
  • I know Odell is 10th in the league in targets. But he's really not being put in great situations - as I noted above, getting him in motion at the very least allows Baker to gather more information about what defense the Steelers are in, so he can make better decisions about when and how to get him the ball.

Defense

  • That was an embarrassing performance. Our tackling was abysmal - even from our most reliable tacklers like Scho and Carrie.
  • Beyond that, we generated almost zero pass rush against Hodges - I know Garret being out didn't help, but come tf on Wilkes
    • The fact that we didn't blitz more says one of two things to me, either:
      • He simply made a bad schematic decision, or
      • He has so little faith in our secondary that he felt the need to drop 6 every play against Duck Hodges.
    • We had almost no effective blitzes from the boundary.
  • Denzel Ward got worked by Washington on 2-3 occasions. That's inexcusable.

To be fair - it is though. It's easy for me to see these things on TV and after the fact, it's quite different when you're "in the sh**"

I know more about football than 98% of the American public - but I assure you I could not coach an NFL team or coordinate an offense. It really isn't easy and it takes time to learn and develop. I learned what I did because I was in film rooms with my coaches for 20 hours a week from age 18-22.

Having said that, here's my plea to fans:

If you don't think Freddie is capable of improving as a coach, then by all means call for his head.

If you do, then give him more time. We got a guy that was really green, we all should have expected this realistically. We've never once tried a long term, 4+ year commitment to a coach and look where it's gotten us. We bought stock in a start up, it's not supposed to run as well as GE right now - but if you believe in its potential, hang onto it, don't sell.

Having said that, I agree Freddie has been bad at times this year and the team is undisciplined.

My dad was a head coach from 1982 - 2003 at one of the most winning-est Ohio public high school programs during his tenure. I, myself played D1 football from 99-2003.  I personally know many successful college and NFL coaches from the likes of Bill Cowher (my brother played for the Steelers) Bob Stoops, Jim Tressel and many more. I spent my summer and spring breaks as a youth interning for the Panthers when Dom Capers took over the expansion team. They're all great motivators and leaders of men, but they're not geniuses by any stretch of the imagination. They got to those positions by hard work and a deep love for the game.

I still maintain that football isn't that complicated. I guarantee you could coach at any level if you wanted it bad enough. Most people don't and I don't blame them. The stories I've heard and my own experiences have kept me away from coaching after my playing days were over.

Right right I agree - and thanks for sharing, that's pretty cool!

My point is just that it's easy for us to armchair QB things. It's a whole different ballgame applying it.
