Glad they didn’t just hold on, but added and put it out of reach on their own.  Dallas made a huge mistake on that kick!

I was blowing a gasket 8n the fourth quarter so much that my wife came in and took my pulse.

That game was absolutely nuts. But at the end the Browns made the plays and got the lucky bounce (Beckham TD run, Ward's INT, the 2-point conversion on the blocked PAT) that they usually couldn't get in past years. They don't seem to make stupid mistakes like before. For the second week in a row they didn't turn the ball over and got eight takeaways. What a refreshing change. So is 3-1.

3-1 with a negative point differential LOL. It’s cool they actually won a few games but that might be the worst defense in the NFL.

I felt the Cowboys defense is much worse. We shut them down in quarters two and three. We went to the dreaded Shottenheimer prevent defense in the 4th quarter.

That’s fair, Cowboys are probably worse. But the Browns are giving up 32 points a game. That is not great.

ha i dk about that, more like reality check. the dallas d is highly sus even if they weren’t all banged up. thry were ripe for being taken advantage of. however, dak lit the browns up for 500 yds and that is quite concerning. also concerning is chubb’s injury. hope it isnt too bad.

Crap

Yup, it could be worse. Thankfully there's amazing depth at the position and an OL that makes that offense go. Like this guy tweeted earlier today.....

yep the browns are numero uno in rushing in the nfl so far, but that just got cut more than in half.

Why?

I think if anything we've proven to be more than proficient without Chubb. He's a unique and remarkable talent, but our o-line did the job with all four RBs we featured.

The Colts' front 7 is a whole new challenge though.

At what point in yesterday's game did Nick Chubb get hurt? What was the team's rushing yards after his injury? And how would you rank the Browns offensive line when it comes to run blocking? The answers show why losing Chubb doesn't mean losing half of the Browns' rushing offense.

Yes, they will miss Chubb. But it's not like this team doesn't have options without him.

Edit: Another reasonable thought....

I think it's significant that the Browns almost lost, rather than finding a way to lose.  I did not have that "I wonder how they are going to lose this game, oh, there it is" feeling that I have had for 10? years.

Taking out Chubb, Baker and Odell, the backs had 185 yards on 29 carries,  a 6.4 average

Running backs are some of the most injury-prone players in the NFL.    On any given team there is a great quality back waiting in the wings for their chance.   With the Browns O-line, these other guys are stepping up for their chance to shine while Chubb is out.  It could be their ticket to a decent deal with another team.

It's like the reverse Kardiac Kids.   The offense runs up a bunch of points and the we wait to see if the defense gets shredded before time expires! ?

Yeah, I've found these wins to be more frustrating than exciting.  Of course, if they win all is forgiven!

Okay whippersnappers, how old were you the last time (1994) the Browns were 4-1? And do you have any idea what's coming this week? It's called a rivalry. Perhaps you don't have any experience with it or remember how nasty the Browns-Steelers rivalry can be?

I was 4.

And with all due respect I watched Myles Garrett commit assault with a deadly weapon on field last year..

Was 11 in 1994. Haven’t really had a feeling of optimism since the browns won Thursday night in Cincy to go to 6-3 in 2014. But even that year it was squeaking by bad teams. Losing winnable games. This product looks much better. Offense looks efficient and in rhythm. Defense opportunistic and make plays when needed.  And man, Stefanski is calling slot of good plays at the right time.  Details are on point!

I may be wrong, but I don't think that had much to do with the QB playing for the Steelers. But it will certainly add to the bad blood this week. I hope he keeps his cool on Sunday. Considering the even more incredible season he's having this year, I would hate to lose him now.

Meanwhile....

Senior in HS?

Alright folks, I woke up feeling great this Monday morning, so here is my breakdown:

Offense

  • Holy crap is our o-line good. Nonetheless, I was with a group of people watching the game who made me want to pull my hair out. I think our fan base expects us to run the ball even more - which is damn near impossible. However, the Colts defense is STELLAR against mid and outside zone runs, which is our bread and butter; so Stefanski did what a good coach does and made our run game complimentary to our passing game, and it worked. Whether or not we realized it, the Colts went from having 7 in the box every play to 6 by the end of the second quarter, which allowed us to get hat on hat and open up some running lanes.
  • D'Ernest Johnson might be the starting RB on a dozen NFL teams right now, which is a testament to our depth.
  • We give our o-line its just desserts, but our receiving core might be the best downfield blockers in the NFL. It's cool to watch 3 super stars in Hooper, OBJ, and Landry doing their 1/11 and giving themselves up to help get an extra yard or so.
  • I know it's not Stefanski's favorite, but I'd love to see him utilize RPO a few more times a game. He does an excellent job putting Baker in positions to be successful - especially in play action, and I think giving D-Lineman a run read for that first second will help Baker with his vision downfield, assuming he decides to pull it.

Defense

  • Miles Garrett is currently the most dominant edge rusher in football - and if I am him I'm FUMING right now at how hyped up TJ Watt and Bud Dupree have been. He needs to take that sh** personally and showcase why he is the DPOY.
  • Everyone needs to lay off Takitaki. My mans is VERY good at setting the edge on defense and has improved consistently each week, especially with tackling.
  • We definitely need Karl Joseph back and Greedy back
  • Sendejo has struggled, to put it lightly. The issue with me is that he's not getting beat in man coverage, he's getting beat in zone - which means he's just not following his reads. Twice yesterday we were in cover 2 when we gave up 20+ down the seam to a receiver that got behind him. That's high school football rules crap - you cannot let that happen as a safety in Cover 2, 3, or 4.
  • We need Larry O back. Dude has been DOMINANT B-Gap to B-Gap. I know Rivers was pressured a lot yesterday, but he would've been claustrophobic by game's end with Larry there.
  • I LOVEEEEEEEE how we line Miles Garrett up as a 3 and 5 technique at times. I've the o-line is set in a half-pro protection and Miles is on the weak side of the field, that means he's 1v1 with a guard in a pass rush situation - which is like a cheat code.
  • Olivier Vernon is having an unsung season. Dude has complemented the hell out of MG and is creating a lot of QB pressures in his own right.

I think the O-Line are the real heroes of this team.  They make the great run performances we're seeing possible (not to take anything away from Chubb, Hunt, or Johnson of course), and they're giving Baker lots of time to play with.

This team has been so much fun to watch in the first half of games, but man they make me nervous when they let off the gas towards the ends of games!

Most encouraging, though, is that past Browns teams would've found ways to lose those games

Good analysis.  My big takeaway from all this is we actually have coaches who can look at a players talent and best know how to utilize said talent.  I feel like the last 20 years it was stubborn coaches just jamming our players through a system with little to no regard of the players skillset.

Excellent analysis as always. I too have noticed how well our skillset receivers block. There is definitely a noticeable difference when Vernon is on the field with Garrett.

Nice write-up @YABO713. I also note the team's discipline is greatly improved. Only two penalties yesterday. I don't remember the team getting many penalties in the previous two games either. They are playing a lot smarter. Let's see if that holds up in an emotional game like the one this week.

On the down side....

And, this just in, the Browns are good....

I’d agree.  It looks like Browns finally have adults in charge and a system that makes sense for them.  They no longer have glaring weaknesses that teams can exploit.  No longer can teams put a bit of pressure on the Browns and reasonably expect that the Browns will wilt with mental mistakes.

A true test is this week to see where they are.

Screens, draws, and mid-zone to the bank. Make their pass rushers earn their living

The biggest thing holding the Browns back (aside for Sendejo's existence) is the unfortunate fact that we have to kick off after we score.

Yes! That is how it always is with sports teams-no matter how agonizing the game is, if it ends in a win, then it all is ok and the agony in retrospect is more "fun" than it really was. Winning cures all in sports.

Cleveland must represent for Ohio next week and smack down that city in PA.

Some UO-relevant smack talk - Cleveland has a larger steel presence than Pittsburgh

Why? Parkey has been regularly kicking the ball out of the end zone. For some reason he didn't yesterday and the Browns paid for it. But that was just one time. The low special-teams rating appears to be the result of two bad PATs and so-so field goals.

Our kick and punt coverage is trash, and has been through all five games. And on the flip side, our return game has been... uninspiring. Peoples-Jones looks like he is running in quicksand.

Call me crazy, but I feel like Garret learned something from that incident and suspension and is on a mission to redefine himself to the NFL as someone who is a nice guy--except when he is rushing your passer!

I was at Burke Lakefront yesterday and winds were out of the east at 18 gusting to 24+.   Not sure which way that kickoff was on TV, but maybe the wind affected?

He considered getting out of football after the helmet incident. But he decided to stay and re-dedicate himself to the game. And it shows.

Good point. In hindsight, they should've kicked it to the upback. But whatever, the Browns won.

@YABO713, good point; fun fact that Cleveland’s “former” ArcelorMittal plant not only has a greater steel-making capacity then US Steel’s Edgar Thomson Works (3.6 mil tons v. 2.9 mil tons) but ArcelorMittal/Cleveland Cliffs works is IN Cleveland while Edgar Thomson is in Braddock PA.
Im a steel history nerd like some others on here?

Sorry, but I'm going to sit out the trash talk this week. If the Browns win on Sunday, then we will have earned the right to trash talk. But since Roethlisberger has as many wins at FES as Baker Mayfield, the Steelers and their fans have earned that right, for now. The Browns have regained respectability, not bragging rights.

On the other hand....
