July 21, 201410 yr johnny boy! Johnny Football keeping up his party-boy reputation By Emily Smith July 21, 2014 | 12:20am Johnny “Football” Manziel stayed true to his party-boy reputation and mingled with stars including Leo DiCaprio, Bradley Cooper and Robert Pattinson in LA on Thursday night. The Cleveland Browns quarterback was introduced to the actors at Hyde Lounge, before they all went onto 1 Oak LA, where boxer Lennox Lewis was hanging with Ryan Phillippe. A witness said Pattinson and Cooper sat with Emile Hirsch while Manziel “jumped from table to table, and hung out in the DJ booth.” This is the reason I didn't want to draft him, sometimes I think it was more of a business move given his popularity.
July 22, 201410 yr Lets see how he performs before we say drafting him was a mistake I've heard it weighed somewhat in LeBron's decision to come back. Probably not the difference maker (that was Savannah) but some.

This is exactly what Cleveland needs. More youth, more fun. Hopefully he parties like this around the city in his off time/personal time. Let me ask a question, has his work habits or commitment come into question in the past? Granted the NFL is greatly different than College, but has is dedication to the game, team been an issue in the past?
July 22, 201410 yr They're ready and waiting for you at Berea! Great to see -- except why must everything be called the Dawg Pound? To a 47-year-old guy like me there's only one Dawg Pound, and it's been serving as an artificial reef on the bottom of Lake Erie for 15+ years.... July 23, 201410 yr Ah the traditional orange stripe. We'll be getting this year's version of what I hope to be an annual picture for awhile on Monday morning. Hopefully the morning sessions work better for a certain three year old.

July 27, 201410 yr POSTED ON JULY 23, 2014 BY KEN PRENDERGAST CLEVELAND’S KC COMPARISON ANALYSIS, CLEVELAND BROWNS, OPINION With 31 other NFL teams, one of them is bound to be similar to the Cleveland Browns – especially in a copy-cat league. Coach Mike Pettine said he wants to copy the Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers. But there is another team in the NFL which bears a closer resemblance to the Browns. By circumstance and by design, the Browns’ closest similarity is the Kansas City Chiefs. And while it’s better to model your team after the Super Bowl champions or their closest rival, the Chiefs aren’t a bad example either. It didn’t look that way in late 2012. The Chiefs weren’t just nearing the end of their worst losing season in 35 years, they were mourning a tragedy. On Dec. 1, 2012, Linebacker Jovan Belcher showed up at Arrowhead Stadium and, in front Coach Romeo Crennel and General Manager Scott Pioli, shot himself to death. Earlier that morning Belcher murdered his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins in front of her own mother and child. The next day, the Chiefs came together as a team and got their second and final win of the season. After the season was over, Crennel and Pioli were fired. The Chiefs’ released four-year starting QB Matt Cassel. Tackle Eric Winston publicly slammed Chiefs fans when they cheered Cassel’s head injury during an Oct. 7, 2012 game. Winston was later released. July 29, 201410 yr Browns defense has been looking fantastic so far this preseason. Justin Gilbert looks like the real deal. Even Craig Robertson has looked good. As for who will play WR, I've suggested greater use of WRs. But I never expected this... "@Mr_KevinJones: On more than one occasion, RB Ben Tate has been split out wide as the outside receiver. But he sailed a couple out patterns and I made a crack that the DJ should play "Sail" by MGK. A couple songs later he actually did, followed by "Fight For Your Right To Party". Taylor Gabriel made some big plays. But keep in mind actual tackling does not start until Thursday.
July 29, 201410 yr I moved the Ray Rice suspension news/discussion to NFL: General News & Discussion Browns related, there's been speculation that the NFL may have shorten Gordon's suspension significantly because of the meme comparisons going around.
July 29, 201410 yr It is taking a ridiculously long time for them to act. We're in training camp and News leaked on draft weekend. At some point, the league owes it to the Browns to be able to set their roster before the season starts.
July 29, 201410 yr Defense is almost always ahead of the offense at this point of the pre-season...... especially when new systems are being installed. That's all levels of football, not just the pros. Yet, it seems that the media act so surprised each year for whatever reason.
July 29, 201410 yr Gordon’s appeal focuses on disparity between “A” and “B” bottle tests Posted by Mike Florio on July 29, 2014, 2:07 PM EDT With the Josh Gordon appeal hearing set for Friday and with Gordon hiring (as Adam Schefter reported last night) the same lawyer who helped Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman avoid a four-game suspension for violation of the PED policy in 2012, Gordon presumably has a case that holds more water than the average bong. Gordon possibly does, especially if the same spirit of lenience that helped Ray Rice receive a suspension of only two games for knocking out his fiancée applies in any way to Gordon. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Gordon landed in Stage III of the program last year as part of a negotiated two-game suspension for the use of cough syrup that contained codeine. Once in Stage III, a player never leaves. And he must pass up to 10 drug tests per month. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/07/29/gordons-appeal-focuses-on-disparity-between-a-and-b-bottle-tests/

July 29, 201410 yr Its funny that he calls the people sheep when he is the one blindly advocating strict enforcement of an arbitrary level with no sense of nuance. Rule followers are sheep, not people who question the NFL's methodology.
July 29, 201410 yr Gordon is in Stage 3. He earned being there. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 30, 201410 yr I'm starting to wonder that he will not be suspended , witch would be great for the browns, the nfl , and Gordon. If not Gordon could just go beat up Goodell's wife then all would be forgiven.
July 30, 201410 yr Josh Gordon's 16 ng/mL "failed" sample for marijuana would have passed in the MLB, Olympics & federal government: http://t.co/2IZEGtkaJ7 "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 30, 201410 yr In the NBA, it's 50 ng/ml. That's a fairly standard cutoff. Depending on the analytical technique being used, 16 ng/mL could be close to the limit of quantification (I'm assuming they use an immunoassay screen, but I don't know if they follow up with GC/MS or what system the lab uses.)
July 30, 201410 yr In the NBA, it's 50 ng/ml. They didn't test for pot at all until the feds started giving them a hard time.
July 30, 201410 yr In the NBA, it's 50 ng/ml. Same for air traffic controllers - 50 ng/ml. So even if the Feds really did give NFL a hard time, what is the explanation for the NFL limit being so stringent?
July 30, 201410 yr Sometimes it takes an injustice to correct an injustice. If all of these rumors are true, Gordon might get suspended, but I would bet that such a suspension would provide the impetus to change the policy. It's so a&&-backwards on so many fronts. 70 tests with no positive results conclusively proves that Gordon does not have an ongoing substance "abuse" problem. Even if he did, banning him from the team facilities and team activities is counter-productive to his recovery. And even if you are a firm believer in the "once an addict always an addict" line of thought, and you believe that Gordon is truly an "addict" based on what has been reported of his past behavior, you have to admit that 70 tests with no positive results is an incredible accomplishment..... for an addict. In the NBA, it's 50 ng/ml. They didn't test for pot at all until the feds started giving them a hard time. Where did you get that? What leverage would 'the Feds' have to demand a policy be included in a private CBA? I have a different understanding. What the NBA really wants is HGH testing. The Players' Association is deadset against it. The NBA then installed a THC policy (which the PA was more split on) in its current, generally worded drug policy to leverage in future negotiations. If and when the PA allows HGH testing, the NBA will drop its THC testing.
July 30, 201410 yr The NFL and NFLPA drug testing procedures are antiquated and need to be replaced with the ELISA (hair) test. So instead of testing a player 70 times per year, they can be testing monthly. And second-hand smoke doesn't show up on an ELISA test. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 30, 201410 yr ^That makes sense..... although I would first argue for a complete removal of THC testing. I also think the PA might push back against ELISA, because it is harder to beat (correct?).
July 30, 201410 yr ^That makes sense..... although I would first argue for a complete removal of THC testing. I also think the PA might push back against ELISA, because it is harder to beat (correct?). ELISA is also less demeaning (no watches you pee into a cup) and it's less intrusive (replaces 10 tests per month with one). August 1, 201410 yr The NFL and NFLPA drug testing procedures are antiquated and need to be replaced with the ELISA (hair) test. So instead of testing a player 70 times per year, they can be testing monthly. And second-hand smoke doesn't show up on an ELISA test. Just a couple of notes- ELISA is NOT synonymous with "hair test." ELISA is an immunoassay technique that can be adapted for use with a variety of biological samples. Blood, urine, and saliva are most common. ELISA is also not generally used to quantify how much of a drug is in a sample; rather, GC-MS or LC-MS is preferred. The compound being detected is also important. THC, the parent compound, can be detected in hair, but is not generally present in urine. It can be passively absorbed by hair and clothing from second-hand smoke. 9-carboxy-THC is the primary metabolite of THC, and is only produced in detectable quantities if an individual has inhaled or ingested THC. It's not detected if someone has only been exposed to second-hand smoke. As far as hair testing goes, it's not nearly as developed as blood or urine testing. However, it's correct that hair can provide insight on drug use over a period of months versus hours (blood) or days (urine,) and it's less invasive. Drawbacks include lower sensitivity, and the need to sample approximately the half-inch of hair closest to the scalp (which corresponds to the last month of growth.) For people with close-cropped or shaved scalps, it will be necessary to pluck kind of a lot of hair from less pleasant areas, like the beard, armpits, or pubic area.
August 1, 201410 yr It's an issue particularly relevant to the Browns. There are countless discussions we have here which could be discussed in the NFL thread. For instance, suppose a Browns game comes down to the rules relative to an instant replay review. We wouldn't go to the NFL thread to discuss.
August 4, 201410 yr ^So are you saying that second hand smoke is never detectable through urine? It would be extremely unusual. Even though mass spectrometry is an incredibly sensitive technique, for cost and several other reasons, it's used most often for confirmation after a specimen has given a positive hit in a cheaper/faster screen (frequently immunoassay, e.g. ELISA.) Organizations generally establish sensitivity cutoffs based on the physical limitations of the instrumentation or analytical method and to avoid problems with false positives or claims of passive exposure. For example, most federal agencies use the 50 ng/mL limit mentioned above. I don't know the specifics of the NFL's testing program, but it would surprise me if they didn't do the same. ETA- Ps, sorry for the slow reply... I'm on the road this week and haven't been able to spend much time online
August 4, 201410 yr The NFL uses 15 ng/mL. That seems to be the main point of contention. The World Anti-Doping Agency (and most other testers) uses 50 to account for the possibility. Josh's "A cup" tested for 16 ng/mL. His "B cup" (which is only tested if the A cup shows above 15) was 13 ng/mL. Whether the A cup or the B cup is tested first is done by random selection and the other cup is only tested if the first one shows above 15. For the purposes of "confirmation" in the NFL's eyes, the second cup need only show any trace level amount and does not need to be above the already low threshold. If you averaged out the two cups, the levels would be below the threshold. Such a shame.

August 4, 201410 yr Too many factors at this point to decide. Lets hear what happens to Josh first. Manziel vs Hoyer poll would be interesting.
August 4, 201410 yr It has been widely reported that the NFL uses a 15 ng/ml threshold. I haven't been following this story that closely, and my professional background is with federal and state agencies. But thanks for the information. The NFL uses 15 ng/mL. That seems to be the main point of contention. The World Anti-Doping Agency (and most other testers) uses 50 to account for the possibility. Josh's "A cup" tested for 16 ng/mL. If you averaged out the two cups, the levels would be below the threshold. Such a shame. 15 ng/mL is appropriate for confirmatory testing, but not for a screen, IMO. I feel bad for the guy, especially because chronic users frequently continue to excrete low levels of THC metabolites (below 20 ng/mL) for a significant time even after they stop using.

I don't think that's the issue. He had passed at least 70 random drug tests in the 2 years prior to this 'positive' result
August 4, 201410 yr I don't think that's the issue. He had passed at least 70 random drug tests in the 2 years prior to this 'positive' result My understanding is that THC sticks around in fat cells, of which (A) Gordon probably has very little of in the first place, and (B) the low level release might be tied to physical activity. So testing positive could be dependent on bad timing. He could have barely passed most of the other tests. This one could have been immediately after a major workout. The only person that knows the real truth is Gordon himself and probably some of his crew.
