August 26, 200717 yr What, I beat ks5214 to posting this, u slipin' man, u slipin'! :-D _________________________________________________________________ Browns get win in Denver Posted by Staff reports August 25, 2007 21:32PM Brady Quinn continued to make his case for the No. 1 quarterback job, throwing for a touchdown pass in the third quarter of the Browns 17-16 win over the Broncos on Saturday night. Quinn played most of the second half, going 7-for-11 for 81 yards with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Cribbs in the third quarter. http://blog.cleveland.com/plaindealer/2007/08/browns_battle_broncos.html
August 26, 200717 yr Hmm..does the plot thicken? I think that Frye will start the season. If we win, the Frye continues. If we lose more than we win, then Quinn wil get a shot. I'm sure that all of you would guess the same.
August 26, 200717 yr The problem is the number of early games against tough opponents will likely doom whoever has the starting job at the beginning of the season. Playing Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Baltimore, and New England in the first five games is a very tough test considering we're 1-11 against AFC North teams in the past two seasons, and haven't beaten New England since 2000. No matter what Crennel does, he'll be second-guessed by everyone, and we'll have another season of quarterback controversies... maybe I'll just stay in the parking lot for the games with a 12-pack. :drunk:
August 26, 200717 yr Yeah none of the articles lately have enticed me.. they're all "Romeo still hasn't found his QB" or "Quinn looks good" I'm waiting for the article "Anderson cut" or "Anderson traded" which should be coming this week because of the mandatory roster cuts.
August 26, 200717 yr Stumbled upon this gem today.. Yep, I remember that commercial. I have a lot of Browns games, post-game interviews, etc. from the 1980s, including from Kosar's rookie year in 1985. Guess what format they're in? BETA!! One of these days I'll transfer them to DVD and be able to post them on YouTube or wherever. The problem is the number of early games against tough opponents will likely doom whoever has the starting job at the beginning of the season. Although your statistics are good, you're not thinking strategically. Let Frye start the season. Let him take the physical and emotional beatings from the playing the good teams at the start. Then, bench Frye with "a tired throwing arm" and let Quinn start against the remaining opponents to gain confidence and experience. If Quinn falls flat or should get hurt (for real), Crennel can always go back to Frye. August 26, 200717 yr Despite Quinn's strong start, rookie won't be Browns QB in opener ESPN.com news services Updated: August 26, 2007, 1:21 PM ET Even though rookie quarterback Brady Quinn has had a solid preseason, Browns general manager Phil Savage said Saturday night that the Notre Dame product won't be leading the Cleveland offense in their opener on Sept. 9. "It's unrealistic for Brady to be in the mix for the opener," Savage told the News Herald newspaper after the first quarter of Saturday night's preseason win over the Broncos. With Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson believed to be the front-runners to start the season, Quinn has been doing his best this preseason to make that decision difficult for his bosses. August 28, 200717 yr Browns trim roster to 76 players 8/27/2007, 4:43 p.m. EDT The Associated Press CLEVELAND (AP) — The Browns cut nine players Monday, including undrafted rookie kicker Jesse Ainsworth who was unable to unseat veteran Phil Dawson. Other cuts included defensive back Therrian Fontenot, defensive end Orien Harris, tight end Buck Ortega and wide receivers Mike Mason and Kendrick Mosley. Fontenot played one game for Cleveland last season and Harris appeared in two games. http://www.cleveland.com/sportsflash/local/index.ssf?/base/sports-29/118824778688960.xml&storylist=clevelandsports
August 28, 200717 yr ^ I wonder what big names the Browns will pick up off of waivers, if anyone. No real surprises in the cuts thus far. I liked Kendrick Mosley in the preseason last year, but he didn't really have the opportunity to shine in games this year. While on the subject of WRs, I'm pulling for Steve Sanders, the East High and BGSU guy, to make the team. I'm thinking that either Travis Wilson or Tim Carter will be cut because of drops and injuries, respectively - probably the latter because releasing Wilson would lessen Phil Savage's credibility in drafting and scouting. Looks like the Browns have made the commitment to Phil Dawson. He better perform this year. No more missed FGs!
August 28, 200717 yr The Browns are cursed with being in a terribly difficult division. There seems to be hope on the horizon, however, and it goes by the name of Quinn. This season will be sub-.500.
August 28, 200717 yr I voted 6-10. I think Cincy and Baltimore are going to be the toughest teams in the AFC North. Here are my predictions: Baltimore-Cincinnati (toss-up) Shittsburgh Cleveland
August 28, 200717 yr Cleveland Browns place center Bentley on PUP list Posted by Tony Grossi August 28, 2007 13:43PM The Browns got to the mandatory 75-player roster limit by placing center LeCharles Bentley on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Bentley can continue to attend meetings and use the club facilities to rehabilitate his knee injury, but can't practice until after the sixth week of the season. http://blog.cleveland.com/sports/2007/08/cleveland_browns_place_center.html
August 31, 200717 yr One question answered Cribbs will return punts but other issues remain open Friday, August 31, 2007 Tony Grossi - Plain Dealer Reporter Chicago- When you're the defending NFC champions, your top priority in the fourth preseason game is to get everyone of note out of the game before they get hurt. And that's the way the Chicago Bears approached Thursday night's final scrimmage at Soldier Field. Their starting quarterback played one series. The rest of their starting offense and their starting defense played two series. The Browns happily took advantage and cruised to a 19-9 victory, closing down their exhibition schedule with three wins and one loss. August 31, 200717 yr Sources: Frye to start at QB for Browns vs. Steelers By Len Pasquarelli - ESPN.com Updated: August 31, 2007, 6:25 PM ET There has been no official announcement -- and there may not be -- from coach Romeo Crennel, but all indications are that quarterback Charlie Frye has retained the Cleveland Browns' starting job for the outset of the season and will open against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 9. Two sources told ESPN.com that Frye has held off the challenge of the other quarterbacks on the roster, and published reports on Friday cited Cleveland players as having been told by Crennel following the Thursday night preseason finale that the third-year veteran will start. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp07/news/story?id=2999741
September 1, 200717 yr Anderson survives; Dorsey out as Browns make cuts Posted by Tony Grossi September 01, 2007 11:47AM http://blog.cleveland.com/sports/2007/09/anderson_survives_dorsey_out_a.html
September 1, 200717 yr ^ Good use of 6th & 7th round draft picks.. all this talk of "building depth" at the D-line.. both of those guys were cut..
September 1, 200717 yr ^^ BOO! I don't think it was the best decision to cut Dorsey. While he's not the most physical QB, but he has a ton of brains. He could've helped Brady Quinn along and assisted the offense with Chud's new system. The only thing I'm thinking is that his contract could be renegotiated and he's back with the team. Nonetheless, I think this is a terrible move. So who goes to the practice squad? I'm thinking that Steptoe and Barclay have spots secured. I think Purcell and Pittman weren't bad in the preseason. Anyone notable in NFL that the Browns might be interested in get cut?
September 1, 200717 yr Those guys have to clear waivers first don't forget.. The biggest names I've heard have been Byron Leftwich, Doug Johnson, and Keenan McCardell.
September 1, 200717 yr I heard that no one is likely to pick up Dorsey, and that Anderson has trade value. So Phil and Romeo kept Anderson to get something for him, probably a second-day draft pick.
September 1, 200717 yr Yeah I guess, but with Leftwich out at Jacksonville, I think a team would go after him before Anderson, and not a ton of teams need another QB.
September 1, 200717 yr They kept Anderson?!?! Why? If they put him second on the depth chart, then Crennel has lost his mind. I'll bet his offensive lineman could play quarterback better than Anderson. How did this guy make it to the NFL anyway?? September 2, 200717 yr Why was he cut? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 2, 200717 yr I completely agree, I am not satisfied with the RB's after Jamal. Pittman would be a good addition. He was likely cut because the Saints have one of the deepest rosters at the RB position and there was just no need for him.
September 3, 200717 yr Gee, Pittman could've been the second-string runner here.... http://www.realfootball365.com/nfl/articles/2007/09/rams_add_rb_pittman.html RF365 Resources NFL News Rams add RB Pittman By Connor Byrne on September 2, 2007 11:43 PM It didn't take long for Antonio Pittman to find a new home. One day after being released by the New Orleans Saints , the fourth-round rookie, an ex-Ohio State running back, was picked up by the St. Louis Rams. Commentary: Pittman was a star for the Buckeyes but never caught on with the Saints. He was unimpressive during the preseason and became a forgotten man behind the likes of Reggie Bush and Deuce McAllister. With the Rams, Pittman will sit behind stud runner Steven Jackson and second-round rookie Brian Leonard. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 3, 200717 yr Also sucks because we know it was because the Browns didn't want him, Cleveland had a higher waiver priority then St. Louis..
September 3, 200717 yr No surprise here... Frye named Browns starting quarterback for opener 9/3/2007, 1:11 p.m. ET The Associated Press BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Browns coach Romeo Crennel on Monday named Charlie Frye the starting quarterback for next Sunday's season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
September 4, 200717 yr ^ Word is that the Browns front office wants Frye to be thrown into the fire against 4 top-ten defenses in the first five games (the only exception is Cincy, who's ranked towards the bottom). Anderson was kept in case Frye went down against one of those defenses. That way, Brady will stay healthy and will be able to build confidence against a weaker defense later n the season. The tentative headline/storyline in the middle of the season: Quinn aims to make Dolphins pay for passing on him.
September 4, 200717 yr The tentative headline/storyline in the middle of the season: Quinn aims to make Dolphins pay for passing on him. Dolphins fans are planning an unofficial protest when they play the Browns. Some bought Quinn jerseys and plan on going to the sports bars to cheer for the Browns for that day. My coworker in the next office from me (dolphin fan) has a poster of Quinn holding up his Browns jersey from draft day. They are still steaming over the fins not selecting Quinn.
September 4, 200717 yr Browns rookie quarterback Brady Quinn wants Ken Dorsey back Tuesday, September 04, 2007 Mary Kay Cabot - Plain Dealer Reporter Browns rookie quarterback Brady Quinn cast his vote Monday for the return of quarterback Ken Dorsey, who was released Saturday. "I think that's something we need on this team," Quinn said. "He's invaluable. You can't put a price on the things I think he brought to the table for us as a team." http://www.cleveland.com/browns/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/sports/1188895527135800.xml&coll=2

September 5, 200717 yr Snap decision: Browns sign long snapper Ryan Pontbriand to contract extension September 4, 2007 CLEVELAND (AP) -- Ryan Pontbriand, regarded as one of the NFL's premier long snappers, signed a four-year contract extension Tuesday with the Cleveland Browns, a deal that will keep the specialist with the club through 2011. Former Browns coach Butch Davis was laughed at when he used a fifth-round draft pick (No. 142 overall) in 2003 to select Pontbriand, who played at Rice. Typically, teams will use one of their backup linemen to handle snapping duties. But Pontbriand has been steady and nearly flawless while snapping for punts, field goals and extra points in 59 games since '03. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-brownssigning&prov=ap&type=lgns
September 9, 200717 yr Pathetic.. why did I waste my time today.. at least Romeo didn't hesitate to bench Frye's worthless ass.
September 9, 200717 yr Maybe it is a good thing that the Browns are never on TV down here. Seeing the score was painfull enough.
September 10, 200717 yr Who told the Browns that they get an "extra" preseason game? Coach Crenell said that he did not want to "throw Brady Quinn to the wolves" (or some other pack animal, IIRC), so he went with Anderson to replace Frye.
September 10, 200717 yr What a disgusting display...I HATE THE STEELERS!!! I didn't realize you were a Browns fan. I guess they still remain popular in SW Ohio after all these years.

September 11, 200717 yr Back to the Browns here... Jim Donovan said that Ken Dorsey is in Berea today. Looks like he'll be back with the Browns any day now.
September 11, 200717 yr Wait a minute! Bengals-Steelers, "The Nastiest Rivalry in the NFL"! When did that happen? . . . . Oh yeah, when we became completely unable to compete with the Steelers and hold up our end of the rivalry.
September 11, 200717 yr Back to the Browns here... Jim Donovan said that Ken Dorsey is in Berea today. Looks like he'll be back with the Browns any day now. pd: Cleveland Browns bring in QB Ken Dorsey
September 11, 200717 yr It is never a good thing to have a revolving door of quarterbacks. Pick one a stick with it!
