January 4, 20178 yr While I understand the philosophy, trading down always makes me uncomfortable, esp when you have the No. 1 pick (and lets face it, Myles Garrett is as close to a draft defensive can't miss as we've seen in a while). And since we already have Philly's No. 10 pick, I would stand pat and make the picks. That quantity over quality approach rarely seems to work out. Philly's pick is #12, not #10. Garrett is very highly regarded. But be careful about the "can't miss" label. If there ever was a "can't miss" prospect IMO, it was Courtney Brown.
January 4, 20178 yr ^Eh. There were some issues with Clowney. Some people questioned his effort near the end of his college career and there was some legitimate debate about whether he would end up going #1.

There never is a can't miss, but Garrett is pretty close to it... ... for those sighting Clowney as a 'miss', injuries, not lack of talent, have hampered him.
January 4, 20178 yr Maybe the Browns can convince Tennessee to trade their two first-round picks for their #1 overall and probably a later-round pick? If they like that trade, the Browns would end up drafting #5, #12 and #18 overall in the first round. With those they should be able to get a franchise QB, one of the top-ranked free safeties and either a highly regarded defensive lineman or cornerback. This draft is so deep in defensive talent that the Browns should be able to get some top talent all the way into the third round. They already have five picks in the first 65 selections. Should they make it six?? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
January 4, 20178 yr ^I don't know if they would do that. They need quantity of good players now that their key skill guys r in place. They actually have a solid D, a promising QB and two good RB's. Unless there is a #1 pick caliber wideout, not sure they would do that. I bet they could hold their picks and get Corey Davis
January 5, 20178 yr Wait, the Browns have a "solid" D? Then why did they give up a score on virtually every opening drive, and rated in the bottom three in essentially every category? Maybe you meant to say "solid crap"?
January 5, 20178 yr Talking about Tennessee. Tennessee has a solid D, needs pieces but overall solid When I said "I don't know if they would do that", I'm referring to Tennessee
January 5, 20178 yr I like Garrett and also like Allen. I don't know who is better, some places I see have Allen ahead of him, got to work them out. I say heck, fill the roster with Iowa players ;-) Already got Kirksey, they should pick up Desmond King at CB, CJ Beathard (QB) in the mid rounds, and pick up one of my all time favorite Hawks, who is a Junior but sounds like he is going to declare, Akrum Wadley, who is a flat playmaker, Kiper has him ranked #5 at RB, but can play slot, really good receiving back, Hue could use him. Reportedly would have ran the quickest 10 yard split of any player in the combine in the last 10 years, start at 0:25

January 5, 20178 yr Lawyers are gonna do what they can to clear him... I believe my friends who were witnesses that he was there I don't see anything in that statement which implies he wasn't there. Best case scenario is that it started as mutual combat, even if the other guy got the worst of it. Doesn't look or sound good.
January 5, 20178 yr From ESPN: http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/18414141/cleveland-browns-wr-corey-coleman-named-police-report
January 5, 20178 yr "but police say he is not a suspect" phew.... EDIT: nevermind. He's not out of the woods yet. Seems like the girlfriend will ID him. I wonder if video evidence will contradict her statement. Also, no indication of a fractured skull, so even if charges are brought, it is likely they could be pled down from a felonious assault.
January 5, 20178 yr From what I hear, there is a warrant out for Coleman brother John for the assault, but that Corey may be in trouble for moving the body while it laid there unconscious. And the guy certainly has more than a concussion.
January 8, 20178 yr I know this is a big speculation on my part, but why would Williams accept the DC job on the Cleveland Browns? Let me answer that with a question.... What do the Browns have that's so special? Answer: the first overall pick and a draftee-in-waiting in Garrett described by some as a "once-in-a-generation player." And as we all know the Browns have five top-65 picks in a draft that's deep with defensive talent. Coaches love to teach and mold players. Williams can make a name for himself by being the DC who molded Garrett into a superstar and returned the Browns to long-lost glory. January 8, 20178 yr I'm just hoping he returns us to a 4-3. I've never liked the 3-4. It limits the types of defensive prospects you can even consider drafting. Garrett is probably a good example. His hand needs to be in the dirt at the snap. I was skeptical as to what his position would be in a 3-4 scheme. Every player who plays in a 3-4 can play in a 4-3, but not vice-versa.
January 8, 20178 yr I think many are applauding this move. He probably respects Hue, and those types enjoy the challenge. He has a ring that was specifically won because of his defense. I agree with his interest in the drafted talent. I would also expect them to keep Jamie Collins at this point
January 8, 20178 yr My point was that this hire tips the Browns' hand as to their intentions with the #1 overall pick. I think it has to be Garrett now. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

I've always preferred the 3-4 but you're right, it is harder to pull off and requires specific types of players. How many NT's can dominate two blockers? Not many. How many pass rushers are good in coverage? Not many. We'll never get it right if we keep switching back and forth. And here we go again, so I'd rather stick with the 4-3 permanently.
January 8, 20178 yr Regarding the #1/#12 pick. Just draft me the best QB and start him from day one. This past yaer was another wasted one searching for a QB. Last year's pick should have been Wentz/Prescott/Jones, 1-15 would have felt so much better. Also is no one else concerned that Myles Garrett has already told the world he prefers not to play in cold weather? I dont want the leader of my defense huddling around the heaters. January 9, 20178 yr ^Phil Savage was talking about him the other day and said the majority of his success came in non-sec games. Of course Savage is all about Alabama and Johnathan Allen so he is a little biased. But I would definatly want to know where his head is at before I would draft him. You can take an average DE and put him in the right scheme and can be an allpro. An average QB will always be just that, average.

The thing is, the SEC has always been a league where players that become NFL "tweeners" dominate, while guys that break out in the NFL can be contained.
January 9, 20178 yr Browns base front 7 under Horton was a 3-4 and will be a 4-3 under Williams. But I've seen a number of media reports the Browns and the Rams were both in a defense nickel over 70 percent of the time last year anyway. So who cares about 3/4 vs 4/3? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
January 9, 20178 yr ^Several reasons. Teams sometimes resort to the nickel more often because they need to when their base defense can't get pressure on the QB. More importantly to me is that the 4-3 scheme opens up more options for personnel. Aaron Donald, for instance, is a waste of talent in a 3-4. Same for Gino Atkins. Same for Jevon Kearse and Warren Sapp (in their primes). Pass rush DE's who thrive with their hands in the dirt and don't have cover skills can't play in a 3-4. DTs who love to shoot gaps and create a mess in the backfield are relegated to more diminished roles in the 3-4.
January 10, 20178 yr Man. It's really hard to argue Watson is not worth taking a swing on at #1 That was pretty damn impressive -- two championship games in a row. Maybe Watson gets bored in regular season games?? It will be interesting if and how his skillset translates to the NFL. January 13, 20178 yr "Honey Boy", the real driving force behind the move to Baltimore, assumes room temperature....
January 13, 20178 yr We will find out shortly if Watson is for us. It's clear he is talented and if he plays in the senior bowl, Hue will get an opportunity to get his hands on him. Hue is known for getting the most of a players strengths. You would think Watson has all sorts of tools that make Hue salivate. If we don't draft him, it won't be because of bad scouting or overthinking, you would have to trust that Hue did feel it was a good fit. We will all have to be OK with that with these guys in charge.

January 14, 20178 yr "Honey Boy", the real driving force behind the move to Baltimore, assumes room temperature.... Oh good, another place to go wee wee. We will find out shortly if Watson is for us. Why do we have to trust anyone who hasn't proven themselves yet? That goes for head coaches or QBs. All that Watson has proven is that he's a good college QB. Vince Young, Tim Tebow, RG3, Jamarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf, Johnny Manziel, and many many more -- in fact a significant majority were good to great college QBs yet didn't pan out in the NFL. Of all the explanations, perhaps the best one I've heard thus far as to why good/great college QBs don't result in good/great NFL QBs is because of work ethic. In college, you can get by on sheer talent. In the NFL, you can't. In addition to athletic talent, you have to outwork, out-prepare, out-hustle, and out-smart your opponents (both on your team and not, including yourself) every single day just to keep your job. If your QB prospect isn't fiercely hungry or driven to seek perfection, then it probably doesn't matter how athletic and smart he is. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
January 14, 20178 yr I just hope the Browns finally focus on drafting the best player available, for once. That doesn't mean best QB available either. Good "teams" win in the NFL, not good QB's. Also, of the 8 remaining playoff teams, here is how they got their QB's which proves you can find a good QB anywhere. Cowboys - 4th round (their backup Tony Romo was a UDFA) Packers - 24th overall pick Seahawks - 3rd round Falcons - 3rd overall pick (1 playoff win in 8 years) Patriots - 6th round Chiefs - via trade of 2nd round pick Texans - FA Steelers - 11th overall pick Build a good team by acquiring the best available players via draft and FA and you will find your QB like the current playoff teams have done; trade, FA, late-round, mid-round, late 1st, mid-1st, etc.. Even the last several SB winners have proven this; Denver got theirs via FA (good team that attracted a good QB), Patriots 6th rounder, Seahawks 3rd rounder, etc.. Do not keep pinning all your hopes on a single 21-22 year old to come in and single-handedly resurrect what is probably the worst franchise in all of sports.
January 14, 20178 yr True. Another factor in how a qb performs in college vs pros is how good his receiving corps is. If a qb in college has the best receivers and is in a system that works with his best assets then that qb will go very high. Vince Young comes to mind. Various USC QBs as well. I wouldn't be surprised if the Clemson qb falls into this category either as Mike Williams, his main WR, is a stud and will be going in the first round easily as best WR in the draft. Clemson has had some of the best receivers in the country the last 3-4 years. How could a qb not put up big numbers if his receivers are absolutely dominant and faster than everyone else?
January 15, 20178 yr I don't think any of the QBs are worth the first overall pick. And I question whether they're worth the Browns' 12th overall. Between Garrett and the best available free safety at #12, the Browns defense could be significantly upgraded, which I suspect is why Gregg Williams signed up. And I'd bet free-agent CB Trumaine Johnson would be willing to follow him from LA to Cleveland. With those additions and some experience for the rookies, the Browns defense would have few weaknesses. Then I'd use the two 2nd round picks and their 3rd round pick on offense, including QB, WR and center. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
January 15, 20178 yr ^I think Kizer and Watson have higher ceilings than either of the two QBs in the conversation for #1 last year. I'd take a swing. We can go BPA at 12 and still get a helluva good player. There's no excuses this year. They have their pick of the litter. Time to earn your salary and prove your worth, front office

The Steelers’ win will continue an insane run of QB dominance in the AFC Ben Roethlisberger didn’t reach the end zone in the Steelers’ AFC Divisional Round game Sunday. But he and the Steelers did reach the AFC Championship Game. January 16, 20178 yr ^perhaps the more pertinent question is which ones SHOULD have been selected at #1. Brady, Rodgers, and Big Ben, for sure.

Yet there's still something about the Browns finally having the first overall pick and being able to get the QB they want. I do think the Browns will pick Garrett (the Williams hire likely tipped their hand) but I wouldn't be surprised if they made a trade to move up to have two top-10 picks, and the second would be a QB.
