March 1, 200817 yr So why are fans so quick to bench or trade Derrick Anderson for doing the same thing? Because he's not as much of a looker for the ladies. You don't find the trash growing on his chin.. a-la, Charlie Frye, attractive?
March 1, 200817 yr Shaun Rogers is so disappointing coming from a lions fan. No question that he's got to lose 20-40 pounds. Was he asked to do different duties on defense? I ask because I see his sacks in 2007 were double his average of 2001-06 but his tackles were way down in 2007. March 1, 200817 yr That doesn't explain why guys are "hot" for Brady! It might explain it for some! :-P Seriously, I don't know what the big deal is with him. It's like people think he's a God, ever since he was at ND. The guy is good, but he hasn't proven a thing yet at the professional level (and I think he was slightly overrated in college). Not to say he couldn't be a great QB some day, but I sure don't think it should be understood as a given.

I ask because I see his sacks in 2007 were double his average of 2001-06 but his tackles were way down in 2007. No, he's always been asked to be an explosive defensive tackle. Run stop, pass rush, you name it, you want him in there every down. As he's put on weight over the years, he's become a bit less nimble, so you'd think he'd become more of a gap filler than than a pass rusher (think a skinny ted washington), but his tackles don't reflect that.
March 2, 200817 yr hot damn! What a start to free agency! Savage has been a busy boy the past two years.
March 4, 200817 yr Right now I'd have to say the Browns are the favorite to be AFC North champions this year.
March 4, 200817 yr Right now I'd have to say the Browns are the favorite to be AFC North champions this year. Although, favored and reality are two different things. The Browns were predicted to be one of the worst teams in the NFL in 2007/08 season and we see how that turned out - they almost won the division despite themselves. I would be happy if the Browns finished 10-6 again. 2007 was a benchmark season and the Browns brought respectable football back to Cleveland. Now lets execute go out and build up the 2007 season with smart fundamental football so that naysayers, fair weather fans and other pessimists don't dismiss the 07/08 season a a fluke and an easy schedule. I can predict, that the first lost will bring out the Brady Quinn cheerleaders.
March 4, 200817 yr just for the record espn went nuts today about the browns moves and said they did best of all before the trade deadline. this before the farve news that is, then it got lost.
March 8, 200817 yr Don't look now, but the Browns are being mentioned as a Super Bowl possibility in 2008... Browns focused on winning, not building for future By Pat Yasinskas ESPN.com Updated: March 7, 2008 It's early March, and Romeo Crennel is ticking off his haul from April's NFL draft. "Brady Quinn is my first-round pick,'' the coach of the Cleveland Browns said Thursday. "Brady's going to be a good quarterback for the Browns for a long time to come. My second-round pick is Corey Williams. He played four years up in Green Bay, and he played very well. My third-round pick is Shaun Rogers. He's a tremendous talent, and he's very excited about being in Cleveland.'' More at ESPN.com.
March 8, 200817 yr Good article. I'm also excited about the coming season, even though it's March. Who knows? Maybe we can find a sleeper linebacker, a fell-through-the-cracks defensive back or maybe a diamond in the rough running back in the fourth round or later. March 9, 200817 yr I would love to see the Browns in the Super Bowl! Let's slow our roll and make the playoffs, first!
March 10, 200817 yr I would love to see the Browns in the Super Bowl! Let's slow our roll and make the playoffs, first! Ha. I'm not trying to be debbie downer here, but remember all the articles the 49ers got lost year? Either way, prove me wrong brownies.
March 10, 200817 yr The Niners were mentioned as a sidebar to that ESPN article as one of a number of duds in recent years. You know how it goes... a team surprises in a year when they're supposed to be an "also ran" and the next year, they're picked as the favorite and they tank (the Tribe has been subject to this recently too). Whether it's the hunger of the underdog or a schedule that presents an opportunity (both could factor), I think it's safer to take MTS's view and look for a playoff run this year and then see what happens. I'm sure that's the outlook the Brownies are taking!
March 11, 200817 yr Browns, GM Savage near long-term deal By TOM WITHERS, AP Sports Writer Cleveland general manager Phil Savage, whose moves have brought the Browns back to respectability, is close to signing a long-term contract extension with the club. Although nothing is imminent, owner Randy Lerner said Tuesday that he and Savage have had on-and-off discussions on an extension since December and should have one finalized "soon." Savage has two years left on a deal he signed in 2005, when he took over a talent-deprived team that went 4-12. The Browns won 10 games last season and barely missed the playoffs. In January, the Browns gave coach Romeo Crennel a two-year extension through the 2011 season.
March 19, 200817 yr From a patriotic website if you don't mind: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Proud to Be an American, and a Cleveland Browns Fan North Star Writers Group March 17, 2008 by Bob Batz Here´s a story for all those people who believe patriotism is dead in America. It happened in Cleveland Browns Stadium late last season, and my wife Sally and I learned about it from our son-in-law, Steve Fryman, when members of our family gathered for dinner on Christmas Eve. March 26, 200817 yr NFL Offseason Rankings - Don’t believe the hype By Charles Robinson, Yahoo! March 26, 200817 yr Nice! What a difference a year makes. I think last year going into the draft (or was it the pre season?) the Dawgs were ranked near the bottom of everyone's list and expected to finish last in the AFC North. Browns, lets not go into the season over confident or with a cocky swagga'. Please play smart ball, execute and win when win you are expected (i.e. beat teams you suppose to beat) to win. Learn how to play hard, "finish off a team" and put a game out of reach. After last years swing season, do not disappoint yourselves or the fans! Armchair Coach MTS! PS and for Goodness sakes, don't turn out to be a fluke like the Bungals!
March 27, 200817 yr Its been quite some time since the browns have been ranked that high in power polls.. thats slick.. Cleveland is soon to have Championships in 3 Pro Sports... I hope..
April 9, 200817 yr You are aware that the Browns won four NFL championships aren't you? The way you posed that suggests that you didn't know. Or are you one of those who don't believe the NFL actually had a championship game before the Super Bowl was created? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 9, 200817 yr ^I think he was saying that the Indians, Cavs, and Browns could all win a championship soon.
April 9, 200817 yr ^I think he was saying that the Indians, Cavs, and Browns could all win a championship soon. I think that's what he meant to. But I see where KJP's coming from. There are few things more annoying than people (usually fans of the black and yellow team) who think NFL history began in 1970. There's been a low key move to include AAFC records in the NFL's records, as the AFL's records are. After all, it wasn't until 1998 that all the old AFL teams had won as many championships as the three AAFC teams that entered the NFL. That would give the Browns eight league championships, five consecutive championships, and their 28 game winning streak in 1948 would be considered the longest. I doubt it will happen, but it might.
April 9, 200817 yr It should. The competition was pretty tough in the AAFC. When you leave the AAFC, join the NFL and win the championship the first year in the NFL, that tells you something. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 10, 200817 yr It should. The competition was pretty tough in the AAFC. When you leave the AAFC, join the NFL and win the championship the first year in the NFL, that tells you something. I believe the Browns remain the only team to win the NFL title during their first season, with the exception of the first few years when most or all the teams were in theirs.
April 15, 200817 yr Cleveland Browns have five games in prime time Posted by Tony Grossi Plain Dealer Reporter April 15, 2008 14:20PM The Browns will play a franchise-record five times on prime time television -- three times on Monday night and once each on Sunday and Thursday night -- in the 2008 schedule announced by the NFL.
April 15, 200817 yr LMAO! Our schedule doesn't look that bad. I see tough, but good games against Dallas, both Pittsburgh games, the Jags and the Colts. I think after last year the Browns have to learn to beat teams. The colts game will be a real interesting game. I'm pretty confident we can when 10 games! I just hope we don't turn out to be a "bust" this year. For further analysis, I turn the mic over to - the only person who picks the Giants to win the Super Bowl - the one....the only (thank god)......Kstay2.....
April 16, 200817 yr Haha thanks MTS, I haven't had a chance to digest or read too much this week (damn forecast week), I am not worried about them being over-hyped, or teams bringing their "A" game for the Browns this year.. you can't tell me that teams weren't taking them seriously the 2nd half of last season. It's all gonna come down to which Anderson shows up, the first half gun slinger, or the second half sizzle.. Also, whether or not the new D-line works well and stays healthy. Phil has to find us at least one serviceable player that 2nd day of the draft, that's a huge key. We can't just mail this draft in because we don't have a 1st day pick.
April 16, 200817 yr ....Also, whether or not the new D-line works well and stays healthy. Phil has to find us at least one serviceable player that 2nd day of the draft, that's a huge key. We can't just mail this draft in because we don't have a 1st day pick. I 100% agree! Please no more staph infections! The secondary is definitely gonna have to step up and the entire defense has to be on it EVERY week!
April 16, 200817 yr I'd like to see the Browns (assuming they make no other moves in order to get a 1st day pick), to address the corner position with the 4th rounder. A good corner is a lot easier to find on the second day/undrafted, than a good D-lineman is (ex: last years day two d-linemen). I truly am confident in Phil, as I think drafting is his strong suit.
April 16, 200817 yr Agreed. DA is the key to our season in my opinion. That and health of course. I disagree. Defense wins games. A solid corner or two and the Brownies defense will definitely improve.
April 16, 200817 yr DA is important, but not as important as everyone thinks. Quinn has the same amount of knowledge of the system as DA, and DA did what he did with little playing time. If DA falters, we still have Quinn to come in and potentially play well. If our D-line stinks again, we're just a swiss cheese run defense.
April 16, 200817 yr The other prime-time games are Sunday, Sept. 14, at home against Pittsburgh; Monday, Oct. 13, at New York against the Super Bowl champion Giants; Monday, Nov. 17, at Buffalo; and Monday Dec. 15 at Philadelphia. This game is at home and not at NY. The preseason game is in NY.
April 16, 200817 yr Agreed. DA is the key to our season in my opinion. That and health of course. I disagree. Defense wins games. A solid corner or two and the Brownies defense will definitely improve. My apologies, I should have been more clear. I meant that DA is a big question mark in my mind. I think the defense will be solid with the new additions up front. DA on the other hand could play like the 2nd half of the season last year and this would throw everything off. Romeo is not going to keep DA on a short leash. If he struggles at first he will get an opportunity to correct himself. If he doesn't then by that time the season could be in jeopardy. A "bad DA" has the potential of losing games for us. Baring injury its almost a given that the defense will be better. That makes DA playing well that much more important if we want to win 10+ games.
April 16, 200817 yr It would be hard to imagine that DA could go through the pre-season playing like he did at the end of last year and the pro-bowl, and still keep his job.
April 16, 200817 yr It would be hard to imagine that DA could go through the pre-season playing like he did at the end of last year and the pro-bowl, and still keep his job. You have a lot of faith in the coach that used a coin flip last year to decide his QB. I hope you are right.
April 16, 200817 yr How does this year's draft look in terms of the secondary? I haven't paid much attention to which/how many DBs are likely to be in the draft this year. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 16, 200817 yr ^^Doesn't matter...we pick 4th round ;) We just take waht we can get I suppose...but at least we get to focus all our attention on sleeper picks. But I don;t think the DB depth is much different than the last 2-3 years.
April 16, 200817 yr Actually here's a list that may be specific to Cleveland: http://profootballexperts.scout.com/2/699262.html But no guarentee what we'll be taking when day two comes rolling around.
April 16, 200817 yr That actually sounds pretty promising. Thanks for sharing that scout.com link! I don't know why, but I always love NFL draft day. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 20, 200817 yr Even Boston is showing us some love: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brown-out period ending Light could be shined on Cleveland this year By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff | April 20, 2008 The Cleveland Browns are without picks in the first three rounds of the NFL draft, all but ensuring that they won't be on the league's radar when the annual picking begins next Saturday. No worries, says general manager Phil Savage. Savage realizes it will probably be the last time for a while that the Browns are relegated to back-burner status, a spot they've become familiar with since reentering the league in 1999. Times have changed in Cleveland, as evidenced by the Browns being selected for five prime-time games when the NFL released its 2008 schedule last week. More at http://www.boston.com/sports/articles/2008/04/20/brown_out_period_ending/?page=1
April 25, 200817 yr Standing pat this year is NOT a bad move. If the Browns can shore up the secondary, great. Also, another RB wouldn't be bad either.
