Who said they are standing pat?

I did. As it stands, they really can't do much w/the draft. When their first pick, round three? I guess you could get someone there, but it's not going to be a superstar, most likely.

^ Josh Cribbs was undrafted and is a Pro-Bowler, isn't he?

I listened to the draft on WTAM and WKNR last year, and it was incredibly exciting how it unfolded.  I hope that someone busts out that audio of when the Browns were suddenly on the clock with the 22nd pick.  One of the stations was doing a live remote at a bar, and the place ERUPTED when that happened.

^i heard that as well. i got so excited. I texted Map Boy immediately.

Their first pick is in the 4th round.  Last time I checked, there were plenty of great players drafted on the second day.  Also, just because they're a first day pick doesn't mean they're going to be good.. there are thousands of 1st day busts.

You have to trade picks wisely.  You cannot continually trade future picks, because at some point you will get burned by lack of young talent.  Also, the cost of acquiring a pick is MUCH more costly than it ever has been.

I would like to see them move up in the 4th round, but unless it's moving into the 3rd, I think they'd be fools to move into rounds 1-2, unless it's a complete steal.

While it's true that you can find some gems in the lower rounds or even free agency, you're more likely to hit some big-time players in the first round -- and certainly with the first two picks overall. But even that doesn't guarantee a big-time player....

Of the #1 picks in the last 40 NFL drafts, 17 of them never made it to the Pro Bowl. http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/alltimeno1

And, of the #2 picks overall in the last 40 drafts, 19 never made it to a single Pro Bowl. http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/alltimeno2

Food for thought...

The Browns got two four round picks - Beau Bell, the LB from UNLV that they wanted, and Martin Rucker, a TE out of Missouri.

Browns trade again, get Rucker

Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer

Surprise, surprise.

The Browns ended up with not one but two fourth-round picks in the 2008 NFL Draft.

The club made another deal, trading their 2009 third-round pick to the Dallas Cowboys for the 111th overall selection to draft Missouri tight end Martin Rucker.

Rucker is an extensively experienced tight end who was at the center of the Tigers' offense in 2007, pulling in 84 receptions for 834 yards and 8 touchdowns. He broke the school's record for catches in a season and led the nation in receptions per game by a tight end.

Overall in his career, he started a school record 50 games, making 203 catches for 2,175 yards and 18 scores.

Rucker's brother, Mike, was a Pro Bowl defensive lineman for the Carolina Panthers who was a second-round pick in 1999. He announced his retirement on April 22.

Browns trade up, get Bell

In the end, Phil Savage couldn't wait.

The Browns traded up to the 104th pick at the 2008 NFL Draft to select UNLV linebacker Beau Bell. The team was slated to pick 122nd before dealing with the Cowboys to move up.

Bell (6-1, 239), an inside linebacker prospect, was a tackling machine at UNLV, making 320 tackles in his career, including 126 as a senior. In his career, he managed 27 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks.

Cleveland Browns claim safety and sign 15 undrafted free agents

Posted by Tony Grossi Plain Dealer Reporter April 30, 2008 15:05PM

The Browns announced they signed 15 undrafted free agents and will invite an unspecified number to their weekend minicamp on a tryout basis.

The team also claimed safety Steve Cargile via waivers from the Denver Broncos. Cargile is a native of Cleveland who graduated from Chanel High School and Columbia University. He was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2004 by Dallas and played the past two years with Denver.

so what do you kids think of the draft and the aforementioned talent signed?

Sounds like an OK draft.

I'm not wild about these

Seattle Seahawks: I can find only three interesting names, DE Lawrence Jackson and Notre Dame TE John Carlson at the top, and then a drop to the fifth round for a peek at 250-pound fullback Owen Schmitt.

San Diego Chargers: Not their fault. Only five total picks. I'll say this -- opportunistic corner Antoine Cason. Then I'll say goodbye.

Cleveland Browns: The first of five choices starts at round four with LB Bo Bell. They say he's mean. I know why. He's lonely. Earlier deals for DT Shawn Rogers (Lions) and DE Corey Williams (Packers) took their toll, which wouldn't be so bad, except that Cleveland had to throw in a gifted corner, Leigh Bodden, and I don't think that was such a good idea.

I have a couple of questions (actually both are all similar): why did Savidge get contract extension? Why did Romeo get one too?

What have the Browns won? If neither contract was due to expire, what's the hurry in getting these new deals done?

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

I'm not sure I agree either.   I think all the pieces of the puzzle have fallen into place and we're seeing the past two/three years of aggravation pay off.

I think a one year extension would have been fine, but may the browns are thinking, why mess with a consistent formula?  The (4-5 year) tide of winning teams is swinging and the Browns are apart of the upswing.

I so saw Romeo last night.

He's short.

Cleveland Browns OTAs are off and running

Posted by Tony Grossi Plain Dealer Reporter May 14, 2008 14:04PM

I'll miss Ted Washington at training camp.  It was always fun to watch him doing absolutely nothing and being amused by all the activity around him.

We'll miss Orpheus Roye too.  Last year some of us noted that he was wearing the same reggae-pattern T-shirt for several practices in a row.  We asked Mary Kay to ask him about it and the next session he had changed it...

So I heard on the radio this morning that Daven Holly suffered a "serious" knee injury in practice yesterday... I believe that leaves us with 2 corners on our roster that have a grand total of about (2 years... or 18 games) worth of experience.  Neat.

With Daven Holly lost for the year with a severe knee injury suffered at Tuesday's practice, Brandon McDonald took over as the starting cornerback opposite Eric Wright. McDonald moved inside to cover the slot receiver in sub packages. Safety Mike Adams also had some reps in the slot. Filling that important position probably will influence whom the Browns acquire to replace Holly's roster spot. It may too tough a task for McDonald to ascend to a starting role and learn the new position -- to him -- of covering the slot.

Cleveland Browns must trade for a cornerback

Tony Grossi Plain Dealer Reporter May 22, 2008 10:48AM

The Browns' cornerback situation is at a crisis stage. Fortunately for them, it's early enough to resolve.

But the team cannot realistically expect to compete for the AFC North title, and beyond, with a starting tandem of Eric Wright and Brandon McDonald and Jereme Perry as the third cornerback.

Five Simple Reasons The Cleveland Browns Are The NFL's Best Franchise

by Jim Cantrell

June 01, 2008

Professional football, as we know it, came into existence in 1920, with the founding of the American Professional Football Association. The league changed its name to the National Football League two years later, and the landscape of American sports has never been the same.

Since that monumental year, there have been several debates as to which team and community could claim the mantle of the NFL's best franchise.

Nice article. I was one of those who fought to keep the Browns. I had a fax machine at home and used it to fax the NFL every few days. Neighbors and family used my fax machine, as well, to fax their own letters. And I don't vote very often, but I did in November 1995 to extend the sin tax for what was then proposed to be a renovated Cleveland stadium.

I'm also not as worried about the cornerback situation as Grossi is. I hope I'm not proven wrong once some of our preseason games get underway and we see how these guys do in game situations!

I don't vote very often

How's come, KJP?  I would think a person as active in the community as you would vote every chance they got.

Thanks, but it's because I'm too close to the political scene and I see how awfully eager many of our elected officials are willing to become political whores. They have few if any principles and even fewer morals. This is especially true at the state and federal levels.

So if you keep going to a store and the choices of merchandise are lousy, sooner or later you get disgusted and stop going to that store. Problem is, there's no other store.....

Back to football.

Bentley just asked for and was granted his release.

and what exactly has he done?  Why can't I find a job like that?  :wtf:

He wants to be a starter somewhere.. I can't blame him, but still.. he took all that money from the Browns and "boo hoo, I might have to be a back up, let me go."

Sound a lot like boozer!  The grass aint always greener!  LeChuckie - git to gittin' already!

At least the Browns wouldn't have to have paid him an injury settlement to dump him, right?

I don't know who would pick him up at this point for other then a back up center.

I don't know who would pick him up at this point for other then a back up center.

My point exactly!  He'll be a starter, only due to injury.

I'm sure some team will sign him to a non-guaranteed contract (who would sign him to a guaranteed one coming off what he is?).  But I'll be surprised if he is starting week 1 somewhere.  If he is, good for him, then he was right.  If not, I'll be glad to see him on the bench of the 3-13 Falcons or some crap team like that.  (Yes, I'm bitter).

Browns receiver likely to start season on PUP list

By James Walker - ESPN.com

Updated: July 17, 2008, 3:19 PM ET

Cleveland Browns veteran receiver Joe Jurevicius likely will start the 2008 season on the physically unable to perform list.

If Joe Jurevicius is out of action, who will fill the No. 3 receiver slot for the Browns? ESPN.com's James Walker breaks down the candidates.

I'm excited that the Browns play the Jets Thursday.. I dunno about you guys/girls..

I can't wait to hear Bernie on air again. Is he doing the pre-season games again this year?

^ I'm pretty sure he is.

2007 was full of surprises for us Browns fans.  Last year when I asked this question, I predicted they would go 8-8.  That was being optimistic due to our "weak" schedule. The Brown's went on to play some "decent" ball and finish with a 10-6 record.  Nobody saw that coming.

With the 2007 season behind us, the 2008 edition of the Browns are listed as "contenders".  We've seen/heard/read good reports from training camp and have a mostly healthy rooster.  This year we've got a tough schedule, the national media has the browns under a microscope and expectations are high.

What do you think our season record will be this year?

Good, I get to drink a beer every time he slurs his speech.

i said .500 last year too.

i'll guess 10-6 this year again.

i hope to be pleasantly surprised.

I going 8-8.  There is no clear cut favorite in the AFC North.  I think the deciding factor will be the two Browns-Steelers games.  Who ever wins those games wins the division. If they split the series...it's a toss up.

they will take a small step backwards this year.    7-9

they will take a small step backwards this year. 7-9

I don't know where you get that.  What currently is in favor of that.

I'm thinking 9-7.  I remember saying 7-9 last year.

they will take a small step backwards this year. 7-9

I guess you're not sure of that, since you didn't vote.  lol
