July 27, 201113 yr They'd better! They have 19 of them! It will be difficult for them to field the minimum 90-man roster without re-signing some of their own guys. But, they have already released two of their free agents: DE Titus Adams and LB Blake Costanzo. No loss there. July 27, 201113 yr This is going free up a lot of cap room if someone else signs him -- about $5.4 million! Apparently he wouldn't take a pay cut and possibly be a third-string QB... Reports: Browns to release QB Jake Delhomme; LB Jason Trusnik heading to Dolphins by NATE ULRICH on JULY 27, 2011 The Browns will release veteran quarterback Jake Delhomme, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported today. The move can't officially be made until 4:01 p.m. Thursday. Meanwhile, unrestricted free-agent linebacker Jason Trusnik has agreed to a two-year deal with the Miami Dolphins, the Miami Herald reported. The Dolphins won't be able to officially sign Trusnik, a Nordonia High School graduate who spent the past two seasons with the Browns, until 6 p.m. Friday. http://browns.ohio.com/2011/07/reports-browns-to-release-qb-jake-delhomme-lb-jason-trusnik-heading-to-dolphins/ "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 27, 201113 yr Vikings Defensive End Ray Edwards is tweeting that he wants to come to Cleveland. Adam Schefter is reporting that is a possibility but that the Eagles and Falcons want him. Charles Johnson signing for big money may have bumped up the price too high. July 27, 201113 yr Yeah yeah, I already posted it. I'm on top of it. BTW: that should put the Browns $38 million below the cap. They are clearing cap room for.... whom? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 27, 201113 yr Former Brown Braylon Edwards is not having a good day today, although it could have been worse. He was in Cleveland court today but was spared jail time for a probation violation. But he just tweeted: RT @OfficialBraylon: I would love to be a Jet but the feeling doesn't seem to be mutual with the management. July 27, 201113 yr Gracias. But I am bummed watching several other teams already signing most if not all of their draft choices already. I'm on Twitter getting buried with all of the players' signings -- draftees, undrafted free agents and free agents. So much going on!!! OK, now I'm not so worried.... July 28, 201113 yr [/font]range] Any latest news on the Vikings DE Ray Edwards ? I'm really hoping we can land him and offensive lineman in need and a respectable wr threat in FA all I know is they better hurry up and make some moves ! Can't wait for some football, GO BROWNS ! ! ! !
July 28, 201113 yr By the way KJP, thanks so much for all the updates. No problem. It's a slow week at the home office, which is also coinciding with the busy NFL week, so.... Any latest news on the Vikings DE Ray Edwards ? I'm really hoping we can land him and offensive lineman in need and a respectable wr threat in FA all I know is they better hurry up and make some moves ! Can't wait for some football, GO BROWNS ! ! ! ! I've been watching Edward's tweets and other media reports about him, and it seems to be a three-way race between the Browns, Falcons, Titans and Eagles. I also think the Browns need a starting corner opposite of Joe Haden. Then I think they might move Sheldon Brown to safety to join with with TJ Ward. Add a solid right tackle and I think that would round out our roster. I'd still like to get another linebacker, a good run-stuffer, especially since we lost Trusnik to the Dolphins today. But I would put LB Marcus Benard in on passing downs to use his blitzing skills on the outside. P.S., most sports reporters and bloggers who follow the Browns or the NFL in general are expecting the Browns to start wielding their $38 million on Thursday and especially Friday. July 28, 201113 yr I have no idea what this team has planned, but if they plan on overpaying TO or Moss then I'm going to be pissed (and by overpaying I mean paying them anything). If a WR is in their plans it had better be either Vincent Jackson or Rice. But we also need a DE, LB and safety. And we need those positions WAY more than we need a WR.
Rice signed with Seattle, 4 years for $40M! Jackson is going back to SD, he was tagged anyway. I highly doubt Heckert brings in any WR's; still looking for two LB's, a DL (hopefully DE), RT, and secondary help. We'll get some solid FA's like last year; Watson & Fujita. Should be a lot of activity today.
July 28, 201113 yr Any chatter on the Browns potentially going after Nnamdi Asomugha? I think we could use a shut down cornerback, and we certainly have cap space. Is he dead set against coming here for some reason? I hear Jets, 49'ers and Texans in contention.
July 28, 201113 yr Given that S Eric Weddle got 4 years, $40 million (with $18 mill guaranteed), I shudder to think what the market willl be for Nnamdi. The Browns need 'talent' at WR, or at least it appears so, but they moreso need 'bodies' at other positions. We may not have a #1 WR (or at least not one who has proven himself so), but we do have a lot of WRs. Same with about every other position on offense. We have enough to field a team. The defensive side of the ball, however, is sorely lacking in every-down players. We MUST get at least one safety, one cornerback, two linebackers, and probably 3-4 defensive lineman through a combination of signing our own FAs and FAs off the open market. Bottom line, I don't think we can blow all of our money on one big signing.
July 28, 201113 yr Agreed. And defense is where we need to spend most of our $38 million. But I've seen no indication that we'll go after Asomugha -- especially after what Weddle got. But even so, Weddle's $18 million guaranteed over 4 years would count at least $4.5 million against the cap in 2011, leaving up to $34 million for other players. That's how much the Browns have to play with. Today, you'll probably see them go after their own FAs first, then other teams' FAs, then their draft picks. If they need to create more cap room for their draft picks, they can restructure existing deals. July 28, 201113 yr Eagles, DE Babin agree to 5-yr deal -- so there's another pro-bowl DE off the market. All 49ers draft picks are signed before camp starts. Teams seem to be getting them signed more quickly thanks to the new rookie pay scale. Hopefully a good sign for the Browns. NFL Network Mike Lombardi is reporting that Houston has moved into the lead for Asomugha—money in the 12-14 mill per year range. Bears WR Rashied Davis agrees to 1-year contract with Lions. The report is Vikings DE Ray Edwards wants $8 million per year. 49ers have informed CB Nate Clements he will be released. SF clears over $7M in cap to pursue Asomugha. Clements would look good in a Browns uniform at a lower price than Asomugha. Rotoworld thinks Clements could end up a Brown (or Bengal or Lion): http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/2298/player?r=1 NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora tweets "Teams like CHI, CLE, STL, DEN shopping for DTs, also, but could be more bargains. July 28, 201113 yr Come home Nate! I can live with it even if I HATED the dude when we were in HS and he was suiting up in that ugly red and white. On another note, I just heard that the Browns signed three of their rookies - Sheard, Little and Marecic - and expect them in camp on Friday.
July 28, 201113 yr Thanks. Maybe you following some of the same tweets as me?!?! It also appears TE Evan Moore was resigned. He will be speaking to the media later today at Berea. July 28, 201113 yr The Young signing is no show-stopper, but I like it. He can be a utility DB at worst. Decent size (5'11 200lb) and sub 4.4 speed to go along with a 40+ inch verticle. Considering that the Saints thought he might be able to cut it at corner, I suspect he is signed to compete for the FS job opposite Ward.
July 28, 201113 yr With those numbers, maybe he should be a corner -- then move Sheldon Brown to FS? BTW, I'm hearing Browns will make FA and draft signing announcements at 6 p.m. Friday. Unofficial: second-round defensive end Jabaal Sheard agreed to 4-year $5.09 million deal that included a $2.2 million bonus. And... July 28, 201113 yr Interesting article...... Browns Will Open “Curtain” Today at 4PM July 28th, 2011 Derek McQuaid Posted in News Per OBR Reporter Fred Greetham.. Without any news coming out of Berea—other than the obvious—dumping of QB Jake Delhomme—Browns fans are getting restless. However, there is hope, according to Pat Shurmur. “There is a lot going on behind the scenes, believe me,” Shurmur said Wednesday. “But what we’re doing will start to become public (Thursday) at 4.” The OBR’s Lane Adkins reports that the Browns are in the mix for three significant free agents, but Tom Heckert has said the Browns are going to be relatively conservative in that area. Two of the players are possibly OT Willie Colon and DE Ray Edwards. “Salary cap room is not an issue for us but we’d much rather spend it on our young players that we have right, now,” Heckert said. “We do like our players, so we’ll spend it, that’s not a question.” READ MORE AT: http://www.brownsgab.com/2011/07/28/browns-will-open-curtain-today-at-4pm/ "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 28, 201113 yr One linebacker the Browns will have is LB D'Qwell Jackson who is addressing the media now in Berea. He is back and claims to be healthy. Let's hope he stays healthy after almost two years of being on IR for torn pectorals. July 29, 201113 yr Jackson will be an upgrade over Mike Bell and a good insurance policy if Hardesty doesn't pan out or gets hurt again. Of course, Jackson has his own injury history. Smaller back, but plenty tough. Could be used on 3rd downs regardless if we have our two big backs healthy or not. Well, I suppose we are set at RB for now with Mr. Madden, Montario and BJax. Nice stable.
July 29, 201113 yr Since Jackson caught 43 passes last year, my guess is he's going to address some of the team's wide receiver needs. This team is going to be throwing a lot to its backs and tight ends. Fast defenses will be able to shut us down unless we have a receiver who can stretch the field. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 29, 201113 yr It's been a long time since the Browns could stretch the field. It used to be because our line couldn't give our QB enough time to wait for the receivers to go deep, and now it's that we don't have receivers that can go deep. I feel like it's my golf game, where I'm either hitting the ball really well and putting like crap or vice versa, but just can't put the two together.
Eh.... I can't really see Jackson lining up at WR all that much. I would say they would use him for passing downs out the backfield, but both Hillis and Hardesty can catch the ball just fine. Hillis especially has incredible hands as we saw last year. As far as a recieveer to stretch the field, I believe they are hoping that Carlton Mitchell fits the bill. MM can also go deep and Cribbs too.
July 29, 201113 yr I don't see Jackson lining up as a WR either. What I see is someone else for McCoy to throw to. S'all I'm sayin'. BTW, CB Eric Wright is going to Detroit. Classy tweet from Eric Wright: "Much love to all my Cleveland supporters.. Thanks to the organization fa takin a chance on me.. I have a lotta love and respect fa the city" "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 29, 201113 yr Eric Wright is outta here? That guy had one fluke season and then showed his true colors. He's soft, slow and has horrible fundamentals. If Detwa wants him they can have him.
July 29, 201113 yr ESPN reporting: Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora did not show up for his 9 am physical for the team. Hmmm, I wonder why? Perhaps because he's headed to another team but won't be reported until 6 p.m. today when all teams that have made moves can make them official -- including the Browns? ABJ's Nate Ulrich reports: CB Buster Skrine, a fifth-round pick, has reached an agreement with the Browns on a four-year deal, per a league source. Pretty quiet on Browns' front today.... FYI: teams can start signing free agents tonight but Cap not in effect until Aug. 4. Teams can be over cap until then. UPDATE on the Browns' free agents: Tracking the movement of the Browns' free agents http://browns.ohio.com/2011/07/tracking-the-movement-of-the-browns-free-agents/ Fox's Jay Glazer reporting that Vikings DE Ray Edwards signing 5-year deal with Falcons. BUMMER!!! Ray Edwards headed to Atlanta :whip: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/07/29/ray-edwards-headed-to-atlanta/ Ray Edwards' agent Doug Hendrickson: "Cleveland never reached out to us on Ray or ever returned our calls.'' With that, I'm done tracking these do-nothings, AKA Browns. You don't build as much through the draft anymore. You do it through all available resources, especially free agency. I saw an article the other day which showed that perhaps a dozen players on each of the Steelers and Ravens were their own draft picks. 'Nuff said. EDIT: You were right, McCleveland. I didn't listen to your comment about Heckert's approach because it was so counter-intuitive that I couldn't believe it. Turns out the Browns aren't even trying to win. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 29, 201113 yr More and more the Browns are giving me a headache not only did they not land  DE Ray Edwards they didn't even talk to his agent WTF ? They better not try to use up all this cap space on undrafted free agents or 3rd market free agents its moves like this that frustrates these loyal fans of this ONCE great organization. Who am I kidding tho ? Lord knows i'll still root for the browns till I die I'm only 21 so I have atleast 50 more years to see a championship hopefully. LOL
July 29, 201113 yr We better make some sort of a splash. Yeah, it's good not to overpay for guys but at the same time take a chance at some of these guy's out here I'm sorry these backup signings that we're projecting as starters isn't doing it for me. It's sad to only be 21 and feeling like you're double that after seasons and seasons of watching the Browns. I will always be a fan because I bleed orange and brown but something has to give I'm not happy nor excited about 5-11 seasons anymore so something has to give. If anyone deserves a quality team, a winning team it's the Cleveland Browns fans and NOT the organization which hasn't done squat sh*t since I've been born. Anyways GO BROWNS !
July 29, 201113 yr In other words the coverted DB oso out of OAKLAND has signed with philly so all of that fellow Browns fans talk about wanting him can stop since we all know our FO wouldn't even think about it . To be real tho I really didn't want him. He's 30 and needs to go to a team contending which we are not I do feel we're on the right path but I'm tired of the rebuilding stages -__-
July 30, 201113 yr I have bad news for you: the average life expectancy in the U.S. is into the 80s. So you have some 60+ years of this to look forward to. I was born in 1967, so not only did I never see the Browns win an NFL championship, I was too young to even remember them being in the NFL championship game. The last time they were in the NFL championship game was 1969. That was the fourth year of the Super Bowl which no one took seriously yet because few took the AFL seriously yet. So I've been in the championship desert all of my 44 years, though I've been paying attention to the Browns since 1978. I want Browns management to stop trying to be clever, long-term or pretend they see greatness in college players that few others seem to see. When I was a kid, teams built through the draft because they had to. Today, they build through free agency because few college players can make the transition to the speed and the complexity of the pro game. But you have to draft, so you try to get the fastest, strongest, most productive players out of the big-time college programs. That at least increases your odds of finding a few players. But if you want to improve your chances, you steal other pro teams' productive players through free agency or by trade. Why? Because they have proven themselves in the NFL. Combine them with a disciplinarian coach who won't tolerate BS from any player and you have some positive ingredients. What did the Browns just do? They punted their best opportunity to acquire NFL-quality players -- AGAIN. I think it's time I go over to the dark side and become a Steelers fan. I've been considering it for a while, and I do watch them because I respect them. But it's hard for me to embrace them, even though I like the city of Pittsburgh very much. July 30, 201113 yr There were knocks on Ray Edwards, mainly that he rode coattails in Minnesota. He's good as a #3 rusher on a kickass line but that's all anyone really knows. He's also been around a while. Let the win-now Falcons have him. Mgmt clearly believes Jayme Mitchell is the better fit. They think highly of him. They also think Usama Young is a starter. They've done a good job picking defenders thus far so I'm willing to wait and see. But I'd like to see more signings too. We still need OL, WR, LB, maybe 3 DL's.
July 30, 201113 yr There were knocks on Ray Edwards, mainly that he rode coattails in Minnesota. He's good as a #3 rusher on a kickass line but that's all anyone really knows. He's also been around a while. Let the win-now Falcons have him. As opposed to the win-next-year-or-the-year-after-or-the-decade-after-that Browns? If the playoff-contending Falcons thought highly enough of him to sign him to a FIVE-YEAR CONTRACT but the 5-11 x 5-11 Browns did not, who do you think is the better judge of talent? Geez, they wouldn't even return the agent's phone calls!!!! How f$&king stubborn/defeatist is that?!?!?!?! Read it and weep................ http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/team/history/year-by-year-results.html Only seven losing seasons in the Browns first 44 years. Fifteen losing seasons in their last 18. They've more than doubled their loss total in less than half the time while the old Browns have had only five losing season since 1996 (with three in their first three years) plus a Super Bowl victory just five years after they left Cleveland. No wonder the Browns were named the NFL's most snake-bitten franchise by the NFL Network.... http://www.nfl.com/nflnetwork/story?id=09000d5d8186c861&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 30, 201113 yr The Ravens drafted Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Terrell Suggs, Michael Oher, Ray Rice, Haloti Ngata, Todd Heap and Joe Flaco The Steelers drafted Ben Rothliesberger, Troy Palamalu, Casey Hampton, Hines Ward, Lawrence Timmons, Lamar Woodley, Maurkice Pouncey, Brett Kiesel, Aaron Smith, Rashard Mendenhal and Mike Wallace. They also signed James Harrison as an undrafted rookie free agent. One could argue that any one of those players is better than any player we have on our roster. The two teams simply have a wealth of talent over and above our beloved Browns. And the talent gap you see is a direct result of the Steelers and the Ravens being two of the best at using the draft to improve and maintain success, while the Browns are not even in the conversation. So, to the extent Heckert is focusing on 'building through the draft', I have NO problem with that at all. I also thought that the market during this free agent frenzy got out of hand.
July 30, 201113 yr Yes, all of those players were accounted for in the analysis I saw of the Browns draft picks vs. those of the Steelers and Ravens: "Since the 2005, the Steelers have drafted 16 young players (ages 23-28) who are still on their team, the Ravens have 17, and the Browns have 8." http://dawgpounddaily.com/2011/07/28/cleveland-browns-in-free-agency-and-the-undrafted/ The author of that article contends good teams build through the draft, but his data belies it. His data says good teams build a core foundation through the draft, and improve on it with free agency and trades. The draft is only one part of how a team is composed. July 30, 201113 yr Even tho I would love to have Andrew Luck idk if I could go through a 2-11 season lol. I love Colt Mccoy but after reading that report I must admit it opened my eyes. Although I do think Colt will be a good QB in this league but how good ? idk seems like he will never be that QB to take you over the top. I do think Luck has all of the potential to be or if not better then Payton Manning when its all said and done. I predict a 3-13 record looking at all of our holes and who is projected to fill em but I do think this organzation is on the rise let's just hope me and fans can be patient tho. If in the end we have one of the worst records of the year towards the end to not go on a winning streak at the end of it like they did with Mangina -__-. I don't want to lose and it probably makes me look bad but if were in week 10 2-8 why not just lose all out a 5-11 or 6-10 season really doesn't excite me for next year anyways.
July 30, 201113 yr Although I am a McCoy fan, I think he lacks arm strength. I know arm strength doesn't mean everything when you have such a high football I.Q like of a McCoy but not only do you need a deep threat you need a QB to be respected by the opposing D that infact he can go deep and if you make a mistake its going to cost you. His long down the field throws weren't no better or any worse then any of our QBs last year but he is only a rookie let's hope he can make some big plays with his arm this year in his second year. To be honest I think Luck just has me licking my chops lol.
They have never been shy about that. Steinbach, Bentley, McGinest, Baxter, etc. All of those were big signings at the time. But they also have continually failed to build a foundation and establish a system/identity. I am not saying they should ignore free agency, but I think you can get stuck on the mediocre highway by focusing on it too much. That anaylsis of Ravens/Steelers draft picks vs. the Browns picks would probably become even more shocking if you compared the talent side-by-side in addition to the sheer numbers. And, yes, I don't think H&H will be terribly disappointed if we are drafting high next year.... although I don't buy into the conspiracy theory that losing is their goal in order to land Andrew Luck. Keep an eye on SF for such 'efforts' this year.
July 31, 201113 yr Another real solid, albeit not spectacular move by the Browns trading a 5th round pick to the Eagles for Broderick Bunkley. He had been a starter for them until hurting his elbow lat year. 3 technique DT. Right around 300 lbs. Strong as a bull (44 reps of 225 at the combine). Former 1st round pick (2006). Gives us some quality depth at DT. For Philly, I'm guessing this is a salary dump move they weren't expecting to make until they swooped in and stole NA
July 31, 201113 yr Liked this quote by Phil Dawson. They asked him if he thought that he would have an opportunity to play for a winning team before we franchise tagged him. He responded... "I want to win, everyone in that locker room wants to win. There’s no guarantee when you go anywhere that you’re automatically going to win. We’ve got a group of guys in there that are focused on accomplishing that. I’m here this year and I would enjoy nothing more, especially given the fact that it would be here in front of those same fans that showed so much support to me and my family at the end of last year. Having been here for 12 years and going through all the stuff we’ve talked about, for this team to win and for me to be a part of that, that would be much more meaningful to me than if it happened anywhere else."
July 31, 201113 yr Football is a "team" game, and is so much more than collecting talented individuals to fill out a roster on paper. H&H understand that, and they are focusing on building a complete "team" (starters & depth), with young talent that can be molded into the model of player they feel is needed to win. They (H&H) are doing their job, and are not being swayed or pressured by the fans & media to make a few sexy moves (by picking up a Boxer/DE, or a 30+ year-old CB, or 30 something year-old Dancer/WR, etc.) to appease everyone. They did add a few older players last year, but the roster was so bad, there was really no other option. However, the guys they added were "character guy's" (Fujita, Watson, Brown) that could play, but also help them mold this young team. With that said, the Browns do have some top tier talent in several positions; LT (Thomas), C (Mack), TE (Watson), RB (Hillis), CB (Haden), ST (Cribbs). That's 4-6 legitimate Pro Bowl caliber players. Then you have some young talented players like Rubin, Ward that will be put in better position to excel (Rubin gets some help at the other DT spot, and Ward moves back to his natural position). Then there's the potential of young guys like Moore, Benard, Hardesty, McCoy, Taylor, Sheard, & Little.. And hopefully guys like Usama & Bunkley make the most of their fresh starts, not to mention Brandon Jackson, one of the best receiving & blockng RB's in the league who knows how to win. The amount of young talent on the roster this year versus two years ago is exponentially greater. This organization is headed in the right direction, but are realistically still one or two season's from being a consistent winner. Next year's two 1st round picks will help accelerate the progression, and the money they are banking right now as the team's culture is molded will be their ace in the hole when they feel the time is right to add a couple of impact-caliber vets that will not disrupt the culture they are building. I'm expecting a 6-10 to 8-8 type season, but wouldn't be shocked with something better due to one of the weakest schedules we've seen since the return. But I think years of winning seasons are in the immediate future.
August 1, 201113 yr As a diehard fan since '86 I'm disgusted year after year from this team. Last year I thought we were turning it around. Great draft, good trades, nice free agent pick ups. Now this year we revert back again. We draft a DT that tweeted "huntin for the money" before the draft, who on film, has been seen taking plays off and being outright lazy. Now that fat ass is holding out, what a shock. And once he gets any sort of money he's done for the year. I think the Idiots realize this now so they trade for another DT 1st round bust in Bunckly or however you spell his name. I'm all for stopping the run, you've got to do that, especially in our division. But lets get real, this is a passing league, you need a great secondary and an elite pass rusher more than some fat dude plugging up the middle. So we still don't have any great receivers, we still don't have a pass rusher, we still don't have a slot CB, we still don't have a fourth DLmen, we still don't have depth at LB. Two drafts and two free agencies and this front office has added a RB, safety and CB. I'll hold off on saying whether or not they added a QB until McCoy has a chance to prove himself. With an easy schedule we may win some games and get people's hopes up much like '07 but when we play any real teams we'll get killed.
August 1, 201113 yr Now Bunckley and the Browns aren't even confirming that a trade took place for that 1st round bust. I'm really getting sick of rooting for this team year after year. Nothing goes right. We have like 5 injuries from these guys walking from their SUVs to the facility. I love Cleveland but our sports teams flat out suck.
August 1, 201113 yr ^ Jeeze heat weren't you just complaining that the cavs had the worst draft ever and blah blah blah Do you post on Cleveland.com? :-D

Take and seat and put you head between the legs. Calmly breath in through the nose, out through the mouth. It will pass.
August 2, 201113 yr No, I don't post on Cleveland.com, I'm called a realistic Browns fan. I'm not a rose colored glasses homer like you people. If you're not smart enough to see the difference between bitching about a crappy sports team and complaining about a city that you never step foot in then I feel very sorry for you. The fall back rebuttal to everything on here seems to be "do you post on Cleveland.com?" I've seen it used quite a few times in my short time on this site. Kinda getting old. And yes, the Cavs had a horrid draft and the Browns had a horrid draft and free agency season.
