September 6, 201113 yr Before the first game of the season, everyone is allowed to get their hopes up and dream. Even us Browns fans. EDIT: speaking of which..... Browns 223 Bengals -8 From http://espn.go.com/blog/afcnorth/post/_/id/31243/week-1-poll-bengals-at-browns "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 6, 201113 yr Don't get expectations up again...6-10 team at best. Only way they don't win at least 7 is if we take a massive hit in terms of injuries. Have you looked at the schedule? We play Cincy twice and the entire NFC West once... and (it looks like) there will be no Peyton Manning in week 2. That could be 7 wins right there.
September 6, 201113 yr A number of prognosticators thought we could go 6-1 in our first seven games, and that was when everyone assumed Peyton Manning would return in time for the regular season. I know there was someone from ESPN who thought we'd go 6-1, but this is all I could find..... http://walterfootball.com/offseason2011cle.php "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 8, 201113 yr I'm just the messenger, so don't shoot me...... NFL: 5 Reasons Why the Cleveland Browns Will Make the Playoffs By Leo Vartorella (Contributor) on September 7, 2011 For the first time in recent memory, there is preseason hope for the Cleveland Browns. As always though, Browns fans are cautiously optimistic. Cleveland fans have experienced disappointments before, such as The Fumble, The Drive and Red Right 88, so they are hesitant talk about playoffs for the 2011 season. However, with a new coach and a promising young quarterback, this just might be the year that the Browns shock the world and make their way into the postseason. September 9, 201113 yr Nice article on the kid..... Browns counting on quarterback Colt McCoy TOM WITHERS, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Published: September 07, 2011 8:42 p.m. Last modified: September 08, 2011 3:54 p.m. BEREA, Ohio - Colt McCoy wears No. 12. For the Cleveland Browns, he's also No. 10. It's a number they'd like to stay stuck on. On Sunday against Cincinnati, McCoy will become the 10th different quarterback to start a season opener for the Browns since 1999, an astonishing statistic and perhaps the single biggest reason the franchise has failed miserably during an expansion era of losses. McCoy follows Ty Detmer, Tim Couch, Kelly Holcomb, Jeff Garcia, Trent Dilfer, Charlie Frye, Derek Anderson, Brady Quinn and Jake Delhomme as quarterbacks to begin the year as Cleveland's starter. "I hope it stays like this for a while," McCoy said Wednesday. September 9, 201113 yr Excited for the Browns season this year, mostly b/c of Colt. I think he's shown more potential than any of the other guys on the long list of losers that started the season at QB since 99. Seems to have more leadership qualities than the other guys...has the look of being in control, or at least seemingly knowing what he wants to do. Some of those other guys looked like fish out of water at times in the pocket.
September 9, 201113 yr If we had a solid right tackle and a top-flight DE, I'd say this could easily be a playoff team. It all depends on Colt playing with the efficiency he displayed throughout the preseason. If he does, and stays healthy - no reason he can't have a positive effect on his young receivers. Edit: I agree with the Walterfootball projection. Very good analysis. 8-8 is about right.
September 9, 201113 yr ^8-8 is reasonable, but they could do better than that with the schedule they have. I could see them going 10-6 if they get some breaks. Of course I could also see them going 6-10... but I find it hard to imagine this team winning fewer than 6 games with their weak schedule.
September 11, 201113 yr already a headache but thank god for cribs return now we're starting to move the ball. These penalties are frustrating tho.
September 11, 201113 yr Different year. Different players. Same team. Same result. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 11, 201113 yr No matter the coach, players, or system...for years this team has failed time and again to make key plays at crucial times on either side of the ball, and sometimes the fate of the game comes down to such plays....and today was a testament to the fact. How many dropped passes that were not perfect, but catchable? Defense blows coverage on two plays resulting in T.D.'s... If you cannot learn the fundamentals, you do not deserve to be playing at this level. This will carry on throughout the season....just watch. I'll spare myself, however. Cincy is mediocre at best, and we prove we cannot beat teams we should beat....and you think this will get easier? HA!!! So sick of this SH!! where it comes down to basically two or three plays!
September 11, 201113 yr Sickening. Absolutely sickening. A f'in street football play to lose it. Very disappointed in the conservative 2nd half play-calling that made the caught you sleeping play possible. Amd very disappointed in the make shift offensive line. Cincy is better than a lot of people give them credit for, especially on D, but still.......
September 11, 201113 yr My cable went out with 5 minutes left. From what I could find online it doesn't look like I missed anything.
September 11, 201113 yr That 4th quarter was very hard to watch. Like most over the last couple seasons. That game really should have been won, but we saw flashes of good offense today. If they can clean up their play the Brown's can still have a successful season.
September 12, 201113 yr I had to shut off the game in the first quarter. I love football too much to watch the Browns. The offensive line are second-string matadors and Colt McCoy is a dead man walking. This is going to be a difficult season. Wake me when it's over. September 12, 201113 yr I'm with hootenany... i'm not ready to toss my towel in just yet. Richmond Mcgee:
September 12, 201113 yr At least the stillers fans that I work with won't be thumping their chests tonight either.
September 12, 201113 yr ^True... But I think a lot of us are just licking our wounds. Its as though going 1-0 is an impossible dream...Like Sweet Sensation sings... Ha!
September 12, 201113 yr I had to shut off the game in the first quarter. I love football too much to watch the Browns. The offensive line are second-string matadors and Colt McCoy is a dead man walking. This is going to be a difficult season. Wake me when it's over. I'm with you. As I said after the first pre-season game. I'm a fan, but its so hard to watch. I pulled out my Kardiac Kids hoodie, only to put it away again.
September 12, 201113 yr Great game by Haden, until the entire defense was caught sleeping. Not a good day after for them, I'm sure. McGee is pretty bad. Injuries already hurting us at punter and on the offensive line. We need a flippin' right tackle... Offense wasn't awful outside of the first quarter.
September 12, 201113 yr Pretty bad in the 4th as well. Like I said, conservative playcalling left the door open for the Bengals to take back the lead. The defense played outstanding outside of the 1st quarter and that one play. I think giving up the TD to Benson (after he got the first down) at the end was strategic to save the playclock and hope for a quick score and onside kick. But we took our foot off the gas for whatever reason. Also, two times we had first down inside the 4 yd. line. When you have a back like Hillis and unless the defense is absolutely stacking the box with 10 players, you run Hillis three straight times until you score. In those situations, we did score a TD on one with the pass to Moore but we also blew our chance on the other and had to settle for a FG. If we score a TD there, Cincy would have had to go for 2 to tie it up after the AJ Green TD. I'm disappointed, but I certainly am nowhere close to turning my back on the team. We've been through and seen way worse. I'm only fair-weathered with the Tribe.
September 12, 201113 yr Sorry, I love trains too. But I won't watch people get mangled in the wreck of one. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 12, 201113 yr Sorry, I love trains too. But I won't watch people get mangled in the wreck of one. Hahaha!! As hilarious as that is, i'm with hts121 on this one. It's just a typical fall week. Saturday: bursting with excitement Sunday: Fuming, Furious, Vomit filled rage Monday: Deep dark depression Tuesday - Thursday: Wiping your hands of the Browns, completely indifferent Friday: Nice article in the paper about Brown's young talent.... optimism builds Saturday: bursting with excitement (repeat for regular season)
September 13, 201113 yr Denver was flagged for trying the same exact quick-snap play last night, figures.. Still doesn't change the fact that the Browns staff could've simply called timeout, but still worth mentioning. Good to see the Ref's got the memo from the NFL, and that the Browns were used as the guinea pig in the experiment.

September 13, 201113 yr That's hilarious. It's Tuesday and I am completely contemplating wiping my hands of The Browns. You nailed it.
September 13, 201113 yr I don't really wipe my hands of them on Tuesdays. I give up on them at some point every fall though. Sometimes it's in November, sometimes December, but every year I've had to give up on them at some point. As far as I can remember, I've only once given up on them in September, and this week wasn't quite bad enough to make me do that again. If there's no improvement I might get my Sunday afternoons back in October though.
September 13, 201113 yr If it not this problem this week that caused them to lose....... surely it will be another next week, or worse, seeing the same crap as we have many times. Are players sleeping while watching game films or what?
September 13, 201113 yr Well this week it looked like they were nodding off during the game itself. :-)
September 13, 201113 yr Calling all punters....... Agent: Richmond McGee headed to IR Associated Press CLEVELAND -- Browns punter Richmond McGee injured his back during warm-ups before Sunday's season opener, a possible explanation for his horrendous NFL debut. Agent David Canter said McGee suffered a herniated disk before Cleveland hosted Cincinnati, and that the injury was so bad that McGee was kicking without feeling in his legs. McGee averaged just 36 yards on eight punts, shanking his first one 20 yards and later following it with punts of 28 and 30 yards. Canter said the Browns plan to place McGee on injured reserve later Tuesday. September 13, 201113 yr If this keeps up I'm going to try out for Punter. Hell, things can't get any worse!
September 13, 201113 yr ^You forget how important positions like punters, kickers, long snappers, and holders are until you're left using a player for one of these positions that was bagging groceries last week.
September 18, 201113 yr Alright! A break from the weekly routine! Joshua Cribbs is definitely back this year!! Oh yeah, let's go Denver! The browns are in a three way tie for 2nd.... enjoy that while it lasts.
September 19, 201113 yr Sheard, Taylor, and Little held their own to today....Go Browns!
September 19, 201113 yr Great win by a very young team on the road. Indy's other stars (Clark, Freeney, Wayne, Mathis, Addai) surely wanted to prove that they aren't the Indianapolis Manning's, but couldn't, thanks to a solid performance by the Browns all they way around.
September 19, 201113 yr That was a good win yesterday. Not great, but good. Something to build on. Loved the defensive line play. OK offensive production that was clearly boosted by Cribbs' returns. We need to start winning games at home, which has actually been a problem for the Browns for a while. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 19, 201113 yr Defense looked great in the red zone, otherwise they at least slowed Indy down enough to give the offense a chance to catch their breath. Offense looked good once they got some momentum (The problem seems to be getting that momentum started.)
September 19, 201113 yr Very enjoyable win. Although they did not have Manning, that is still the Colts and it was in front of a very involved Indy crowd. Looking forward, we need the following - 2 guards that can actually get some push off the ball, a free safety that can cover "center field", another DE to consistently apply pressure, and depth at about every position. The offensive line play has been the most disappointing aspect of this season IMO. Colt is constantly under pressure and the holes in the running game are minimal. Several of the rookies - Sheard, Taylor, Little, and Marecic - all looked much better than they did in week 1. Sheard needs to stay on the left side where he is clearly more comfortable and effective. Taylor has all the tools and will dominate if he stays healthy and committed. Little was on the field in a variety of packages yesterday and showed up nicely. And Marecic showed some glimpses of why the Browns were willing to part with Vickers.
September 19, 201113 yr Yes, I forgot to mention the offensive offensive line play. I still think McCoy is a dead man walking. For a moment, I thought Indy had killed him on his blind-side hit/fumble. Ah, the joys of being young.....
