four teams in five years and being unable to win the starting job in Arizona last year says something about him too

Something about him or something about the League?  I'm betting it says something about the league because we know the league is not infallible and we know that sometimes they miss on good players.

Hoyer has enough talent to stick around another 5 plus years in this league backup or starter, if he can come back from injury.  Those two games and those game tapes bought him that time League wide, but I guess what I really mean is that he earned it.

I think you see 'it' when you are looking for it.  If you decide that somebody is a crybaby (which i must have totally missed this subplot because I haven't read any quotes from him to show this) then you will never see 'it' because you don't want to.

He was pouting like a little girl on the NFL Network after the game when he was asked about being booed. I thought he was going to cry like Tim Couch.

And I think you need to try to ignore me more often rather than try to figure me out.

One thing is certain about Hoyer.  He hadn't mastered the concept of sliding.    He looked as graceful as Bernie after a night out in the burbs on that run!

Belicheck still makes Brady practice sliding weekly.    I wonder if Chud does the same?  Or maybe he should now....

I watched that interview on game night.  I thought Dion Sanders was being the cry baby and Weeden answerd as well as he could.  That was the second time Dion Sanders complained about the booing.  I honestly thought about how disappointed Dion must have been that Weeden didn't bite into the meatball he lobbed his way.  Like him or not, he's our starting quarterback again.  Now we can watch him sink or swim.  You can dance all over his grave at the end of the year or eat a tasty crow dinner.  Either way, he's the starting quarterback now.

Yep, so I will be cheering for him to progress and to succeed. He's certainly got the physical abilities to succeed.

I think some of the above posters (KJP, 8Titles) nailed it.  We know what Weeden can do and in my opinion this team will be luck to get to 7 wins with him now.  We don't know what Hoyer could have done, but I would have liked to have seen him get his shot for a full season.  Even if the team did worse with him at the helm, the franchise could move on.  I think that's why many fans were frustrated to hear that he is out for the season.

However I do not think we are "doomed" with Weeden. I can't say for certain what the future holds for him. I just haven't seen enough out of Weeden over the past 18 games to say that he's The Guy. If past performance is indicative of future results, then he probably isn't The Guy. If he can learn to improve his game, then he could become a solid quarterback. He now has the rest of this season, barring further injuries, to learn and demonstrate what he can offer to this team in the future.

I was a cautious Weeden supporter last year.  I now feel confident in saying that he is not "The Guy."  This team is no more "doomed" now than they were before the season started.  The defense is solid and the offense has some individual bright points, so they're going to win some more games in spite of Weeden.  I just think he's a liability and if we really thought that this team could sneak into the playoffs by winning a weaker than expect AFC North, he'll play a role in preventing that from happening.

That's a good point about being no more doomed than we were.  In a way, thankfully our backup qb was our original starter.  I do feel pretty awful for hoyer though, I liked him too.

Some follow up on the Richardson trade from a national perspective...

The Trent Richardson Trade That Shocked The NFL Was Officially A Genius Move

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/trent-richardson-trade-shocked-nfl-210720546.html

I'm not sure if that article accounted for today's game.  His stats were right where they have been, regardless.  I was watching one of the post-game shows today and they were highlighting Trent grinding out the last possession, claiming that was the reason he was brought to Indy.  Bullsh!t.  Indy would have never traded a 1st round pick for someone who could run the clock down.  Indy's offense is actually designed as a run-first system.  Any NFL 1st round pick is valued at a premium, with a value rating is on par with a top 10 pick in the NBA draft.  Indy was thinking it was getting what we thought we were getting when we drafted him.  They just assumed it was us, not him.  It was him.

Yep.  It was a great trade.

My immediate reaction was good.  My rationale?  He sucks and a 1st round pick is far more valuable.  Thanks Holmgren ya putz.

My initial reaction was pretty negative about the trade because (like the colts) I assumed his problem was that he couldn't get decent blocks and I hated seeing a player traded for a future pick so early in the season. I'll admit now that seeing him play with a white and blue uniform hasn't improved him and we may have gotten the better end of the deal.

And now the Josh Gordon trade rumors are perking up again....

And now the Josh Gordon trade rumors are perking up again....

If they trade Gordon, they'll be inviting criticism unless they can keep up the winning streak.

Given the Richardson trade, I don't think this front office cares much about the knee-jerk reactions of the media and fans to personnel moves.  That said, I saw that report last night and it seemed to me to be nothing more than Shefner providing details to the rumor he put out there a few weeks ago by naming the other team (SF) with whom something more than passing discussions were had.  I further suspect that these discussions were most serious before the Richardson trade.  Indy was desperate for a RB, SanFran was desperate for a WR, and Banner was desperate for another high draft pick.  He took the highest bid, which (lucky for us) was offered for Richardson.

Shefner still said a trade was "highly unlikely", right?

The SF trade?  Like most 'rumors' people like Shefner get wind of, it was dead before ever being reported.  In fact, it mightve just been a ploy all along to get Indy to up its offer for Trent.

If i trust anyone, i trust Schefter. He gets it more than anybody and I definitely would trust him before I trust anyone on the Browns beat.

and he did say it was highly unlikely

Even I didn't think Weeds had a 25-yard potato toss in him, his career in a microcosm.

Lucky for me, I got back to the house around 3pm yesterday to find that my DVR had not recorded the game... despite it still showing on my scheduled recordings.  I therefore had the pleasure of taking in the last half of the 3rd quarter and all of the 4th, while missing all of the first half.  [double face-palm]

I think we can easily say Weeden is the worst quarterback in the league.  Good arm strength, average accuracy, bad feet, awful pocket presence, and now we can add TERRIBLE decision making to that list.

Fans in Jacksonville and Houston might disagree with you....

I saw the game up to that AWFUL PICK! I had a party to go to, so that was my cue to shut off the TV and leave the condo.

So how many times did all of you yell at your TV like I did: "Throw it!" while Weeden was dancing around in the pocket? If you were yelling it, when was that? For me, I found myself saying "1-2-3 throw!" and then I'd yell "Throw it!" after four or five seconds. Sometimes six! It's excruciating to watch Weeden.

Weeden's interception is all over the news as one of the worst passes. The picture that goes along with the yahoo article is priceless.

OK, I was probably being overdramatic.  But I still think he might be the worst.  Our ability to win with a QB who couldn't play anywhere else (Hoyer) shows that this isn't really a bad team.  We just have a bad QB in Weeden.

"Throw" is in quotations. Haha. Priceless.

The most bewildering aspect of that throw was, iirc, that it was one 1st or 2nd down.

1st and 10.  Down 7 at the time.  5 min left.  Their half of the field.

Was I the only one watching the game on Sunday that just wanted the announcers to shut up about the celebration dances?

As much as I b!tch about Rich Gannon broadcasts, these last two weeks have been horrible. First the NFL network and then FOX. I wish FOX would spend more for broadcasters and less on dancing robots....

Waiting For Forever: Why All Cleveland Sports Teams are Doomed

by Scott Raab

Which brings us to the Cleveland Browns, a caricature of the team that once called Cleveland home. Debating the dearth of talent and depth on the roster is beside the point—who could possibly believe that Brandon Weeden will ever lead any NFL team to greatness? No, the Browns' overarching problem is owner Jimmy Haslam, currently awaiting indictment by the federal government on charges relating to his main business, Pilot/Flying J, after a years-long investigation by the FBI and the IRS resulted in a raid on corporate headquarters last April.

Haslam has more or less admitted that his company defrauded hundreds of customers, while insisting that he knew nothing about any such malfeasance as Pilot's CEO. It's a fascinating defense for a blustering billionaire, and you needn't peruse the dozens of lawsuits filed against Pilot—or ponder the number of ex-employees who've admitted their guilt and agreed to testify for the feds—to grasp a couple of points germane to the Browns:

1. Jimmy Haslam is either a crook and a liar or he hires crooks and liars and pays little if any attention to the way they operate.

2. The NFL, which is ardently protective of its brand, won't sit idly by as the Pilot/Flying J case unfolds in the national media.

The boys club is protected over the brand.  The NFL has already made its decision.  In fact, I've heard there are already contingency plans in place no matter what happens with Jimmy Haslem

You mean transfer of "ownership" to a family member?

I haven't heard much of anything about this issue since I moved in May. But another regime change, that would be terrible.

^Yes.... or to the Haslem Family Foundation.  It wouldn't be a regime change.

Scene's fallen a long way since its 80s heyday, it's basically a regular Bartimole column away from being the Free Times.

"Currently awaiting indictment" is a stretch at best.

Weeden is unwatchable.

Weeden is unwatchable.

The new benchmark for bad draft picks for the Browns, and that's saying something.  1st round pick last year will be worthless at the end of this year.

The browns ain't got no alibi, dey UGLY

Weeden is back-up, but a very expensive one. I'm tempted to pick up a free agent QB and trade Weeden for what we can get, but we still need a backup.

And Josh Gordon was piece of meat out there today. His effort was for sh*t. The word on Twitter among the sportswriters and talk show hosts was that Gordon TOOK HIMSELF OUT OF THE GAME on that 3-and-12 play when his big play ability was needed most. I'd like to find out more what went on out there with him today.

Defense sucked in the first half but recovered in the second. Exact opposite from last week's game against the Lions. And now we play undefeated KC in their place. It just keeps gettin' better....

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

KC is smoke and mirrors . They have had an easy schedule.  The won by one today.

They had more Pro Bowlers on their team last year than we did, and I think they all returned this year. Then they added some new talent. They may have an easier schedule than we do, but I still think they're a very good team.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

The Browns will pay out the rest of Weeden's contract and waive him before the start of next season.  No way the Browns get anything for him in a trade.  31 next year and getting worse by the week, he's the Benjamin Button (yes, I stole that from "c'mon man") of QB's.  I do think he'd be a heck of an Arena League QB though, less to think about, maybe he could stick with the Gladiators.

Looks like they are going to have to pay Campbell that bonus after all.

The Weeden thing has been beat to death so I won't add to it.  He's getting worse.  He's lost all confidence.  At least he was 'watchable' in the second half.  It would have been nice if he could put two good halfs together.  Whatever.  He's done.

There are other issues on this team.  The drops are still inexcusable.  Rogers throws the ball harder than Weeden and the backups to the backups for Green Bay are holding on to the ball.  WTF is with Bess?  I thought sure hands was supposed to be his strength.  With a struggling QB, we can't have the WRs continually killl drives for us.

The refs from yesterday need to be reprimanded.  There were some calls that went our way in the first half which should not have.  Too bad we weren't able to capitalize.  But the calls which did not go our way in the second half were outrageous.  That was a clean hit by Gipson!!.  He used his shoulder!  We should have had the ball in GB territory while still able to mount a comeback after Finley fumbled and Mingo recovered the ball.  There was also the interference call against Skrine and a few others I can't recall right now which were terrible flags.

^There were some bad calls, but I thought they did ok yesterday. The call on Gipson was incorrect, but it was a hard hit and from the angle they saw it from at full speed it probably looked like a head first hit on a defenseless receiver. I'm ok with it. It's not like they ejected him from the game for it, and as poorly as we were playing it didn't really affect the game that much.
