Good point.  I'm guessing John Adams will be told to lose the drum if he doesn't do it voluntarily.  And ditto for fans wearing Wahoo logo.

Guardians it is! The font and logo either need some tweaking, or will take a while to grow on me, but the name is a winner.

There were other good options, but I've always though this was the way to go. I'm happy its over. Let's move past it. I'm here for Baseball, and I'm here for Cleveland.

I never made the connection between the drumming and the team name. It's just one of those enjoyable parts to the game, which needs to do something to engage fans. Baseball has just gotten so damn boring, and without any bigger-than-life players.

still very bummed they totally copped out on all native american links, because i was really hoping for first nations. instead they get swept out yet again.

so ok guardians would be fine -- i mean aside from the statues we all certainly do enough of that for the city to make it a legit uo approved choice. 😂:classic_cool:

They'll lose the Wahoo battle if they fight it, which I doubt they do.   Too many fans are bound and determined, in part to spite the objectors.   Few of whom have any indigenous blood.

I've heard the name "Tribe" discussed as a compromise.

can we talk about how the tribe is 7-3 over their last ten games and could sweep four from the lowly orioles if they win this afternoon?

i dk if its time to get excited yet, but its definitely impressive coaching at least during this stretch and considering the hella lightweight bats (14th place out of 15 in the al).

a snapshot of injuries

before tonights astros game:

INJURIES: Indians: Zach Plesac: (thumb), Cam Hill: (wrist), Aaron Civale: (finger), Shane Bieber: (shoulder), Eddie Rosario: (oblique), Josh Naylor: (ankle), Jordan Luplow: (ankle), Franmil Reyes: (side), Roberto Perez: (finger).

Astros: Justin Verlander: (elbow), Jose Urquidy: (arm), Joe Smith: (undisclosed), Austin Pruitt: (elbow), Enoli Paredes: (shoulder), Josh James: (hip), Kent Emanuel: (elbow), Pedro Baez: (right shoulder), Bryan Abreu: (calf), Aledmys Diaz: (hand), Alex Bregman: (hamstring).

My new favorite team name option is Cleveland River Dragons. Own the burning river.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

The Indians losing streak is now at 9.  The Tribe got no-hit in the nightcap. It's the third time they have been no-hit this season. I believe this is the longest loising streak under Tito. The All-star break can't come soon enough.

I think Guardians is a good choice with a strong Cleveland connection. My only mild surprise is because they might have trouble trademarking some of the better logo options since the Lorain-Carnegie bridge Guardians are already so popular and printed on lots of Cleveland t-shirts and art already.

Also, would have loved Cleveland River Dragons, but obviously that one was a long shot.

Now to prepare for the “I’ll never watch Cleveland Baseball again” grumblers. Ugh. I will say again: the name change is LONG overdue.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

If that proves to be true, then I’ll be happy. Keeping the colors is a no-brainer in terms of continuity and not feeling like a totally new club. I’ve always been AABS (Almost Anything But Spiders), so that’s good too.

I personally like the name Spiders and think it would be cool, but I also recognize it makes no sense to name the team after a creature that so many people either hate, fear, or find disgusting.

I would like to see them steal a name from one of their minor league teams - either Captains or Clippers.

same here. i would be very happy with guardians and keep the colors.

im not so against spiders, given the history, but guardians is way better.

now my cle homie in brooklyn said the deco bridge guardians is too lord of the ringsish, why not go the full argonath? 😆

taking 2/3 from oakland is a nice way to come out of the all-star break, but houston, tampa & white sox upcoming means pretty rough sailing ahead for quite awhile.

I think this was the best case for the name and definitely agree I don’t love the font and logo.

Absolutely thrilled by this news, this was just about exactly what I've wanted them to do for a year now. I like the "Cleveland" and "Guardians" script and the colors a lot. The "G" with a baseball logo is fine if a little underwhelming, I'd have preferred direct use of the Guardians of Traffic sculpture for the logo. But I'll chalk this one up as a win, now they just need to tell me when I can buy my merch.

Do you think they chose this because it ends in IANS?

The logo will need some work but I like the name.

Cleveland changing name from Indians to Guardians

Associated Press

CLEVELAND -- Known as the Indians since 1915, Cleveland's Major League Baseball team will next be called the Guardians.

The ballclub announced the name change Friday with a video on Twitter narrated by actor Tom Hanks, ending months of internal discussions triggered by a national reckoning by institutions and teams to permanently drop logos and names considered racist.

The organization spent most of the past year whittling down a list of potential names that was at nearly 1,200 just over a month ago. But the process quickly accelerated, and the club landed on Guardians.

School crossing guards will be protesting at the home opener next year.  It's a JOKE.  Lighten up.

Lean into the Art Deco style of the statues and they could really have an amazing font/logo. I think the name is perfectly fine and I like that it's got a local connection. Definitely could have been much worse

It's the Guardians now, so time to get with the program and move on. Indians was a name whose time had come and gone.

As it obviously references the Guardians of Transportation on the Hope Memorial Bridge, this is the best possible name which honors Cleveland history and also the future.

Also, the font they are using for Guardians reminds me a bit of the Indian's font from the '70s.

Would have preferred the Spiders, but I’ll get with the Guardians. That “G” logo is an embarrassment however, I thought it was a joke at first.

Can't they find someone to design a nice logo?  Good grief.

I was 60/40 for Spiders. But this is fine. I would have preferred someone local like GV Art for the logo,  but this is kind of what I expected.  Btw this would be a good opportunity to spend some money and refurbish  the actual guardians.

The G-MEN!

Call them the toileteers, the buttheads or whatever. I don't care, as long as they put a championship-caliber team on the field.

I’ll miss the Indians name- hey, I grew up rooting for the team with the name - but The Cleveland part of the name is still and will always be the best part. I liked the video with Tom Hanks and the concept that we are all guardians of a great city again on the rise.  I also like that you can still “see” Indians and the connection to the past in the last 5 letters of “Guardians”

The logo doesn’t look iconic and needs a reworking, IMO.

The real problem is if the  Dolans continue to let championship caliber players leave the team,  the best we can hope for is another long term rebuild so that we can get to the next 2-3 year window of being a legitimate championship contender.  Currently,  It’s not easy watching the team fighting to stave off the Motor City Kitties.

Here’s to having pro baseball in Cleveland for another century!

I wonder if people’s severe fear of spiders played a role in them rejecting the name. I can think of a few people in my life who are absolutely terrified of spiders.

Not my 1st choice but it’s not bad… i do agree the font and baseball logo need work.

Unpopular take: I am glad the Block C is going away, I was never a fan of that; bring back the 70’s-style C.

Ultimately I’m with @KJP, get me some hitters and win games🤷‍♂️.

Anyone else think the next step involves putting the team up for sale? Or wouldn’t the smarter move have been allowing a new owner to name them? Idk

That is probably one of the reasons it was selected.

Stupid name. I was hoping for the Cleveland Spiders so it would connect the franchise with it's past making it seem to be the same franchise. Dolan doesn't care about Cleveland and can't wait for a new owner (as long as he or she doesn't move the team).

Until there is a salary cap in MLB, the Indians  Guardians will be a glorified farm team for the large market teams.  Jose Ramirez will be the next to go.  And then Bieber.  And so on.

Was that Tom Hanks narrating the video???

Stupid name; limited meaning. Yeah, I get the Lorain Carnegie Bridge connection. The Cleveland Spiders would have been a far more meaningful--and very cool and edgy---name. The "Guardians" is just so blah and ordinary.

So there is already a team with that name?  Uh-oh.

He got his first acting job in Cleveland at Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival in the 1970s and went to a lot of games.

That domain was registered on 06/25/2014. I'm sure whoever has it agreed to sell it to the Indians.

Easier to change the name than retain and re-sign quality players, I guess.

The name is fine. We'll all get used to it in a few years.
