During "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" will the crowd substitute "the home team" with "the Guard-yuns"?

I like the name overall. Good local connection.

Guardians it is! The font and logo either need some tweaking, or will take a while to grow on me, but the name is a winner.

There were other good options, but I've always though this was the way to go. I'm happy its over. Let's move past it. I'm here for Baseball, and I'm here for Cleveland.

For as long as I live, they will be the Indians.

I disagree.  Guardians is a great choice!!!  Unless you are still going to see Dodgers games in Brooklyn, or Colts games in Baltimore - progress happens.

The Charlotte Bobcats are now the Hornets, the Oilers are the Titans, the Bullets are the Wizards, etc, etc etc

Yeah, it's fine. Mashed potatoes are fine, too. The name is generic and...."fine". Not great, not good, not bad. just fine. "Spiders" would have been a hell of a lot better. Too bad we're settling for just fine these days. Just like a 2---or even four--story bldg on Public Square for Sherwin Williams.....its fine. Not good, but we're not pushing for 10-12 stories at least to match the other shorter bldgs on the square, but rather, 'public rooftop access'.

"Spiders" lol. Sounds like the name kindergarten students would pick.

Guardians is a solid choice. Like the Royals and Nationals.

I happen to like Guardians over the Spiders. Who's opinion is right?

Did they just chose the new name because it has "dians" in it?

They could have gone with "Comedians" and had a Drew Carey tie-in.

They both seem pretty childlike to me. But then again, a lot of sports names are fairly childlike, so I don't really mind the name.

I feel they could have done much better with the logo though. Two flying Gs carrying a baseball? What the heck is that? And the new C is inferior to the old block C. They could have just kept that old C.

Working off of the guardian statues makes sense. It's a local unique feature and it's next to the ball park. But if you are going to work off of that, at least make something epic by building off of the intimidating statues. Don't drop cartoonish flying Gs carrying a baseball on us.

Stupid name; limited meaning. Yeah, I get the Lorain Carnegie Bridge connection. The Cleveland Spiders would have been a far more meaningful--and very cool and edgy---name. The "Guardians" is just so blah and ordinary.

I think the Spiders is a dumb name with no meaning beyond the fact that it was a dumb name with no meaning that we used way before anyone alive today lived to see it.  Guardians is a reference to a local landmark so it is if anything more meaningful.

This is a better look than block C.

Baseball names are strange. The MLB has 2 teams that share their names with other pro teams, 2 teams names after socks, 2 named after fish and 3 named after birds. 4 of them got their name while they played in another city.

I'm happy with the Cleveland Guardians.

Also, the font they are using for Guardians reminds me a bit of the Indian's font from the '70s.

I give zero cares about major league sports, but I am glad to say goodbye to the Indians. Guardians is fine with me.

I was holding out for Cleveland Lakers, though.

I think the two "G"'s are meant to evoke a hand pitching a ball. The wings of the G's bring to mind the speed of the pitch as well as a nod to the winged Guardians of Traffic.

That being said, the execution of the logo is horrendous. It looks like Microsoft clip-art from the 90's. I could see these as a "flying toasters" screen saver. Definitely needs tweaking.

Somehow, worrying about the changing name of a sports team seems right about 45's level of leadership you'd expect.  He must have written that note during "executive time"

If that moronic traitor is against it, I'm even more in favor of it!!!  Where to I get some gear?  GO GUARDIANS, BIGLY!!!!!!!

If someone tells Donnie that Putin said he liked the name-change (and that he said it very strongly and very powerfully) maybe then he'd like it

Maybe he and King Jong-Un can exchange some additional love letters about the name change

Always difficult to prove who is right with opinions. But if we want to quantify things to provide some supporting evidence, there are probably more (college, HS, Jr High, elementary school) teams out there named "Guardians" than "Spiders", meaning the former is more generic and less special. For example, the Glastonbury Tomahawks are now the Glastonbury Guardians.

However, it ultimately doesn't matter what you or I think. And granted, there were far worse names than "Guardians."

The nature of opinions is that they aren't right or wrong; they are subject(ive) to change. They are right for the person or community, but not universally "correct".

The last one should be turned to face the right; left-facing suggests going backwards.

The Reds are also named after their socks. So three socks teams.

The Blue Sox could have been good, an homage to the Union Army, like the Columbus Blue Jackets.

I'd really like it if northern cities would poke a little more at the Confederacy, like say, the Cleveland Abolitionists, Liberators, Emancipators. Guardians can fit that bill, I suppose.

The Guradians of the Tribe

The Guardians of Dolan's pocketbook.

I think the G logo is kind of being underrated by the collective Cleveland internet community, the wings are cool IMO. Not saying I'd have done exactly the same thing but the aesthetic is on the right track. I love that we're going to be the only Art Deco sports team.

IIRC I posted this on this thread a good while ago. Cleveland SC really nailed the best 'Guardians' logo

This I like. Too bad they hired a seemingly terrible graphic designer. I can’t get over the G logo, worst logo in sports.

I liked the idea of the Blues. Then Ohio could have the Blues and the Reds.

Well, they were called the Blues before the Spiders. So there is some logic to having gone back to that name in some form.

Forgot to add the end

It’s an ‘OK’ nickname but this much I know - Cleveland Guardians sounds a lot better than the Charlotte, Portland or Las Vegas Guardians.  Hope that stadium lease gets figured out sooner rather than later.

And no, the Dolans won’t move the team - but apparently since there are no other local CLE-based families with enough money to buy a CLE franchise these days (see the Haslams and Gilberts as an example) some out of town owner would have no problem starting somewhere else.

i'm ok with the name change but I do wish the naming process was more transparent.  I would have liked The Dolan's to have narrowed down the choices to the top 3 and let the public vote for the final choice.   I do hope the graphics get some refinement  The font type has the "V" in Cleveland looking like a "U".  Also the Guardians font script is very reminiscent of the Indians script.   Also I can't wait to see the Guardians of Traffic  statues replacing "Slider" as our mascot. LOL

double pic

I don't mind the name change to the Cleveland Guardians.  What I am having issue with is that the script font is easily manipulated to still read "Indians". Also the shape of the lower case script "s" has a similar resemblance to the shape of Chief Wahoo's left eye. Add 2 lines and there you have the current team's name. Hopefully they will work on refining this

They knew the public was going to write in "Indians", or at least "Tribe".   The latter someone would eventually have been "offended" by.

The whole idea that the original name and logo were somehow "offensive" (when Notre Dame, the Celtics, and the Mario Brothers are not) is bad enough, but some are having issues with this?

Just proves our point that some will never be satisfied and pushback has to happen at some point.

Why do you think some Native Americans protest team names like the Indians, while Irish don't protest the Celtics and Fighting Irish? Read through the Native press today and you'll see almost 100% approval of dropping the Indians name.
