Guardians it is! The font and logo either need some tweaking, or will take a while to grow on me, but the name is a winner.

There were other good options, but I've always though this was the way to go. I'm happy its over. Let's move past it. I'm here for Baseball, and I'm here for Cleveland.

^ I don’t hate it. I love Rosario the guy and he always gave it his all. His hitting wasn’t so bad, although his stats get masked by the odd 3/4 or 4/5 game that paper over the barren spells and often-times terrible situational hitting. I think I’m right in saying he’s also the league-leader in GIDP.
The definite upside is that it now frees up our logjam at SS, where we have several top gloves being held back by him that we can put into a bake-off.
2023 Syndergaard is nothing like the 2016 version and he’s been pretty terrible since TJ surgery, but if anyone can squeeze something out of him, the Guardians can.

oh geez i dk about this trade, i guess we will see what noah has left.

Stick a fork in the Guardians, they're done.

^ Jeez, c’mon. The Twins lost again, so nothing lost. I still think we’ve a decent shot at winning the division.

Rays add RHP Aaron Civale in trade with Guardians

Jeff Passan, ESPNJul 31, 2023, 03:49 PM ET

The Tampa Bay Rays acquired right-hander Aaron Civale from the Cleveland Guardians in a rare deadline trade between two teams with playoff potential, enriching an injury-riddled starting rotation while Cleveland landed hard-hitting first-base prospect Kyle Manzardo.

Civale, 28, has excelled since returning from a strained oblique in early June, allowing two or fewer runs in 10 of his 11 starts. On the season, he is 5-2 with a 2.34 ERA over 77 innings, striking out 58, walking 22 and allowing just five home runs.

Because Civale remains under team control through the end of the 2025 season, the Rays were willing to give up Manzardo, a 23-year-old who has shot through their system after they selected him in the second round of the 2021 draft. While Manzardo's numbers have flattened this season after a standout 2022 -- he is hitting .238/.342/.442 with 11 home runs at Triple-A -- evaluators expect him to be a solid big league hitter.

This is a real head scratcher. They traded their best healthy pitcher who they control through 2025 for a first baseman prospect who has injury issues. They didn't need a first baseman. What does this mean for Josh Naylor? Does he become DH? If so, what does this mean for Josh Bell?  Does he sit on the bench next year at $16.5M?  I assume Bieber will be traded this off season.  I dunno. This just doesn't make sense.

This trade is just ... so stupid.  They traded our only healthy veteran pitcher away.  I know, we now have Syndergaard,  but he is a mess now.  And they are trotting him out tonight against the Astros who are one of the best hitting teams.  Good luck with that.

Looking at next year, Bieber is going to be traded so he won't be here.  And I am not optimistic about McKenzie who I think will eventually need Tommy John surgery which would put him out of action next year.  And I hope Quantrill is going to be okay.  Supposedly, he had shoulder problems at the end of last year and had all off season to heal which he did not.  So, I hope he does not need surgery too.  And Plesac is not going to be back and obviously Civale is not going to be back.  So, potentially, the entire starting rotation that started this year could not be pitching here next year.

They would not be in this mess if they could draft and develop power hitters like they do with pitchers.  And they give up on the ones they have too early.  Nolan Jones and Will Benson are both having pretty good years and have potential and they gave up on them.  I hope they don't give up on Oscar Gonzalez who is sure to develop into a good power hitter if we get rid of him.

And what are we going to do with another first baseman next year?  We already have Bell and Naylor.  I hope Manzardo can play the outfield.  Maybe Manzardo will start in AAA and be brought up later in the season.  Then, they could cut their losses with Bell.

I am going to need an adult beverage tonight over this trade.

Generally speaking, I have a lot of faith in the FO, their track record deserves it. But yeah, this one is a bit of a head-scratcher.

My hovercraft is full of eels

And, remember another trade with the Rays - Yandy Diaz for Jake Bauers.  How did that trade work out?

Yes, I know that Seattle and Carlos Santana were also involved, but the Rays made out on this trade.

And how about CC Sabathia for “future superstar” prospect Matt LaPorta.  How did that trade work out?

The trade is wholly dependent on the Guardians' ability to get Syndegaard back in form, IMO. If Tito & Co. get him to even 75% of what he was, the rotation is in good shape

Thats where Bibee, Williams, and Allen step in. Need to trade our depth of pitching since we are the best in MLB at developing it while weak at devloping hitting. You trade your strength to improve on your weakness. The team wasn't going anywhere this year anyways and Civale has constantly been hurt so I think the idea is you are trading at peak value like we have done with prior pitchers lately which have been mostly great trades.

It sure looked good yesterday until he got hit by the line drive.   Tito has earned a fair degree of trust on these matters.

ok i get it the astros are unbeatable - sheesh!

Our pitching was pretty good vs Astros, well except for Eli Morgan in game one. And no Josh Naylor in the last two games didn't help. The players were most likely bummed out about Antonetti throwing in the towel on this season.

It's maddening that there is never any sense of urgency with this organization. Just keep trading for prospects and waiting until next year.

Josey's a global folk hero/meme now, at the cost of 3 games.   Tito and Clase got one each.   Anderson got 6.

Former MLB manager, coach, catcher Pat Corrales dies at age 82

Associated Press

Aug 28, 2023

ATLANTA -- Pat Corrales, who managed the Texas Rangers, Cleveland and the Philadelphia Phillies before a long stint on the Atlanta Braves coaching staff under Hall of Fame skipper Bobby Cox, has died at the age of 82.

The Los Angeles Dodgers said Corrales died of natural causes Sunday night at his home in the north Georgia mountains. He had worked in the team's front office since 2012, serving as a special assistant to the general manager in his final role.

I had read the speculation that Francona was retiring after this season but never heard it was certain. The linked article below sure makes it sound like tonight will be his last game at Progressive. It's a shame we couldn't win it all in 2016 under his helm but we do have the longest winning streak in over 100 years and a solid record. I wonder if he'll stay in Cleveland.

Tito definitely has ties here now with investments in various businesses.  I heard he's about to open another restaurant locally.   Hopefully he maintains a home here since he can afford to escape Cleveland winters and look after his health.

I'm guessing the Guardians would create a position for him in the front office if he wants to remain with the organization.

Stephen Vogt candidate for Guardians manager job, sources say

Jeff Passan, ESPNOct 23, 2023, 02:53 PM ET

Longtime major league catcher Stephen Vogt has emerged as a serious candidate for the Cleveland Guardians' managerial job a little over a year after he retired from playing, sources told ESPN.

Vogt, 38, is currently a coach with the Seattle Mariners and had already interviewed for the San Francisco Giants' open managerial job, which could soon be filled by San Diego Padres manager Bob Melvin, who was granted permission to talk with the division rival. Vogt will have an in-person interview with the Guardians this week, sources said.

My history is someone limited to the last 4 decades, but I feel like the Indians/Guardians always prospered under a manager who already had some kind of connection to the team in the past.   It's not a sexy market compared to some, and it takes a special kinship to flourish here.   With this being said, who is our next Hargrove or Tito?    I was hoping for Sandy Alomar but apparently he doesnt' like the pressure.

Way-too-early 2024 MLB power rankings

David Schoenfield, ESPN Senior WriterNov 1, 2023

The Rangers have done it! They've won their first World Series in franchise history, beating the Diamondbacks in five games in what was one of the most surprising Series matchups ever.

Now that the Fall Classic is over, it's time to turn our attention to 2024 -- and we're kicking that off with some way-WAY-too-early power rankings.

1. Atlanta Braves

2023 record: 104-58

2023 final ranking: 1

20. Cleveland Guardians

2023 record: 76-86

2023 final ranking: 20

There are reasons to be optimistic about what Cleveland might do in 2024: The AL Central remains soft, and rookie starters Tanner Bibee, Logan Allen and Gavin Williams all impressed, combining for a 3.35 ERA across 65 starts.

Hopefully, Triston McKenzie will be at full strength after injuries limited him to four starts, and Shane Bieber is still here -- although he's in his final year of arbitration, which means a trade is possible. The Guardians have to replace Terry Francona, however, and while it's impossible to give an exact number on wins a manager can add, we may just find out how valuable Francona has been.

More problematic: fixing the offense, which ranked last in the majors in home runs, including at pathetic 18 from its outfielders.

Guardians win MLB draft lottery, to pick No. 1 in franchise first

Jesse Rogers, ESPN Staff WriterDec 5, 2023, 06:16 PM ET

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Cleveland Guardians will pick first in the 2024 MLB amateur draft next summer for the first time after winning the second-ever lottery Tuesday at baseball's winter meetings.

The Guardians had a 2% chance of earning the No. 1 pick and beat out eight other teams with better odds -- including the Oakland Athletics, Kansas City Royals and Colorado Rockies, each of which had an 18.3% chance of winning the first pick, tied for the best percentage among all teams.

Guardians to start home opener following total solar eclipse

Associated Press
Feb 15, 2024

CLEVELAND -- The Guardians will throw the first pitch at their 2024 home opener after the earth, moon and sun align.

Cleveland's first game at Progressive Field against the Chicago White Sox will begin April 8 at 5:10 p.m. -- two hours following a total solar eclipse, an event that hasn't happened in Northeast Ohio since 1806 and won't again until 2444.

The team said Thursday that the ballpark's gates will open at 2 p.m., giving fans a chance to observe the eclipse, which will begin at 1:59 p.m. The peak will arrive at 3:13 p.m. and last four minutes.

The Guardians have typically played their opener at 4:10 p.m. but adjusted the start time after consulting with city officials who are expecting Cleveland's downtown to be crowded with visitors for the rare eclipse.

The team is urging fans to plan accordingly and use public transit if possible.

Cleveland is one of few major cities in North America in the path of totality, a 100-mile track of the moon's shadow.

Officials have estimated over 200,000 visitors will be coming to the area to witness the unique celestial show. Most schools will be closed for the day, and some residents in the city's western suburbs are renting their homes to eclipse devotees from around the world.
