im pretty sure attendance figures will rebound significantly once people realize this team is for real and the weather cooperates. weve had what? 10-11 home games so far and for all but maybe 2 or three its been pretty frigid or raining. also once school lets out for the summer things will rebound.

Guardians it is! The font and logo either need some tweaking, or will take a while to grow on me, but the name is a winner.

There were other good options, but I've always though this was the way to go. I'm happy its over. Let's move past it. I'm here for Baseball, and I'm here for Cleveland.

Grady Sizemore is on the cover of this week's Sports Illustrated

Rack up another first for Indians center fielder Grady Sizemore: Sports Illustrated cover guy.

Don't you all want to go out and buy an SI or better yet subscribe to SI??!~

Hopefully, the SI jinx will only hurt Grady's season and not his career.  Either way, this season is shot.  A look at other Cleveland related SI jinx covers:

5•23•1966  Sam McDowell of the Indians, 4-0 with two one-hit shutouts, gives up five runs without retiring anyone in his next start; in the start after that he walks four before being yanked after 1 2/3 innings.  Cover asks the question:  "Is he faster than Koufax?"  Never lives up to his potential, alcohol problems.

10-3-05  Playoffs down to the wire, Indians on the cover.  End of season

4-1-96 Indians on the cover, "ready to rock"  better than anyone including the Braves.

5-6-96 Belle on the cover.  Entire 96 season shot!

4-6-98 Cory Snyder and Joe Carter on the cover as SI picks the Indians to win the Eastern Division.  I think they lost 100!!

6-3-63 Bob Hope dressed in an Indians uniform.  Birdie Tebbits has heart attack, they finish about .500.

5-30-55 Herb Score on the cover.  Never saw that ball coming.  Career was never the same.

8-29-88 Kosar on the cover. "Last of the Great Quarterbacks?"  Dr. Z picks Browns in the Super Bowl vs 49rs.  Kosar gets hurt, career never the same.  Browns go through 4-5 QBs

1-12-87 Ozzie on the cover after the browns beat the jets in that comeback OT game.  Next week?  The Drive!!!!!

Gee Dan....thanks!  You're as bad as the research folks at SI  :x

hey, remember last year when both the Twins and Tigers played crazy .650-.700 ball for a month and all the rest of the division could do is just look up?

Lets keep this up.

don't forget jacobs also had steady income, but the dolan's lost a lot of loot in cablevision for awhile and this owner is low on the family totem pole. also, don't look for it to get better, recent news is the dolans want to buy the yankees.

still, ownership issues are no real excuse about attendence today tho. fans should support a solid/contending tribe team like this one. i am surprized, but it will pick up as long as they win.

Cablevision should really relocate to Cleveland, but MRNYC, if Cablevision is trying to go PRIVATE, there won't be any money to buy the Yankees.  Where would they get (approximately) $1 Billion?

looks like it doesn't matter, george is putting the kabash on it again. my guess is the dolan's only floated that because steinbrenner's daughter recently divorced the supposed next guy to run the yankees, which was her now former husband. here's one of many links i found thru google:

http://washington-state-football.aolsportsblog.com/2007/04/30/steinbrenner-laughed-at-dolans-interest-in-the-yankees/

also, don't look for it to get better, recent news is the dolans want to buy the yankees.

I think you have it backwards: if the Knicks are any indication, Charles/Jim Dolan ownership of the Yankees could only help the Indians...and Red Sox, and every other AL team.

not in that scenario. the family money and effort would have directly been taken from the tribe and poured into the yankees.

I disagree.  Ownership can have a huge influence on what the attendance can be, especially in a town like Cleveland.  Look at Dan Gilbert currently; he took the Cavs from absolute last to third overall in NBA.  32 out of th 41 games were sold out this year where a few years back, the Cavs were averages 10000 a game.  (But of course he had the help of someone by the name of James.)  Honestly, Gilbert reaches out to the fans with free stuff, enjoyable game atmospheres, and helps regulate the front office work.  Have you guys been to a Cavs game in the past two years?  They are frikin awesome!

Larry Dolan could do so much more.  There's no excuse to take over a team that has had 5 straight years on sold out games, let the streak end in one year, and not let them not be able to rebound even when they are winning, especially in a town like Cleveland where everyone is hungry for any team success at all!  To have fallen to second worst attendance is a sin.  I can't figure out if he doesn;t know how to own a team, just dosent care since he's so rich, or is purposely trying to discourage fans from coming.  2.9 million in the effing Cleveland metro alone, a winning team (and plus some with the rest of the state and area!), and you can't fill the stands?  c'mon Dolan....Do something!

ummm i dk. there are also many cases of poor ownership and forgotten teams in april....only to turn around into to full stadiums and raucous fans when the teams were winning it in september. this despite anything ownership did or didn't do. cleveland is also all about that too. it's not like clev fans would be blase about it (say like atlanta) if the tribe were still murdering the competition in august/september. it's only early may.

^^ It's not like Cleveland fans care only when their team is good. Look at the attendance of Browns games.

There are too many people in Cleveland who remember when the Tribe's ownership could care less about the city and the team, an entire generation in fact. There was no need for the '02 fire sale and this 'transition' that hasn't produced much outside of a team that needed one more quality free agent to make it to the playoffs in '05. Even that year the fans did start showing up in August and September.

That being said, Shapiro is pretty darn close to a baseball genius, and truly has made wine out of water. I can't wait for prospects like Adam Miller to be brought up to the bigs in the next few years. If Shapiro had an owner that even spent the league average on payroll, we'd be in the postseason more often than not.

Not sure I follow.  Even if the NY Dolans end up buying the Yanks (which won't happen), how would this effect the Cleveland Dolans?  The money may all have come from the same place, but I'm pretty sure Larry's money is Larry's.

Indians to honor Larry Doby's legacy

Indians haven't won since Grady's SI cover was announced!

^^ It's not like Cleveland fans care only when their team is good. Look at the attendance of Browns games.

exactly. that's what i meant by saying we're not someplace like atlanta, who didn't really go when their team was great. but still, why are the fans not going now? some said weather, that sounds about right to me. it'll turn around as long as they keep winning. but really its not fair for us to compare the loooong baseball season to football where they only have a few home games (and if you like the sport you only have a few chances to go see it).

also, don't look for it to get better, recent news is the dolans want to buy the yankees.

i don't think so, not when the money all comes from the same place. i'd bet the tribe would have been short-changed if the yanks were added to the family sports empire. i'm glad for the tribe's sake that george laughed'em off again (otherwise, i could care less about who will eventually own the skankees).

Well I guess only the Dolans and their accountants know the answer, but I would be very surprised if you're right.  Even though they're family, I think we're talking Paul Allen and Bill Gates here- it's all Microsoft-derived money but Paul's endowment of the EMP didn't slow down the B&M Gates foundation.  I don't know how much teeth they have, but MLB ownership restrictions are meant to prevent conflicts of interest like this.

More importantly, can Doug Jones come out of retirement?

Is there any talk in C-land about making Cabrera the closer? It's about time to sit Borowski.

^Yeah, I was wondering the same thing.  Not cool when your closer has the highest ERA on the team.

^ Scratch Cabrera too...he's starting to pitch like dung too. Maybe Bentacourt? Since the Trible got rid of Mesa and outside of Wickman's one good year....our bullpen consistently blows. Not that I want Mesa back. :)

I agree...but at the same time the constant pitching changes drives me crazy!  These guys are pros, they should be able to pitch to a lefty or a righty...and why, WHY (like the other night) when  a pitcher is lights out, MUST the closer come in?  Bentacourt had three up three down, but Borowski HAD to come in for the blown save!  If it ain't broke, don't fix it when the pitchers are doing well.

I guess they figure they pay that dofus Borowski to be 'the closer'. Problem is, you're right, you'd never take a starter out who pitched strong unless his pitch count was high....why do it when a reliever is pitching well and can go two innings without a problem? Especially with the current state the Indians bullpen is in!

Damn Fausto's good.

major cement missing in that analogy -- same money pot, but paul allen and bill gates are not family. its all moot tho.

meanwhile -- five from the twinks!:

i believe ichiro is more upset about one day in-out traveling to Cleveland in the middle of two series, rather than bashing the city of cleveland.

I don't know...  Didn't sound like too much gray area in his quote. A portion of the article was used at a number of different news outlets. Here's what Fox Sports had...

Ichiro prefers punching self to Cleveland

Seattle had to make a side trip to Cleveland for a make-up game on Monday, where the Mariners blew a seven-run lead before winning, 8-7.

"To tell the truth, I'm not excited to go to Cleveland, but we have to," Ichiro proclaimed, through an interpreter. "If I ever saw myself saying I'm excited going to Cleveland, I'd punch myself in the face, because I'm lying."

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Detroit and Cleveland tied for first in the AL Central.

That is all.

let's not forget that

a) He said this through a translator

b) he has no history of "mouthing off"

c) honestly the schedule does suck to be in and out of a city and play a game in a matter of hours.

Ugh, it's sort of painful to see how good Jeremy Guthrie has been since being discarded by the Tribe.  Good for him though.

Where would we put him even if we still had him?

^Bullpen, available to make starts as needed, and available to take Byrd's spot in the rotation next year (or Westbrook's or Lee's spot this year if they totally lose their stuff this year. again.).  Fingers crossed that Sowers will find himself again and Adam Miller will mature, and then I'll never have to think about Guthrie again...

He was in our bullpen last year and had an ERA of nearly 7

^as long as we're still here, that's all that matters.

I'm going to tonight's game, yay!

yeah, I know, I certainly didn't miss him when he left.  But now he has a lower ERA than any of our starters.  Jeez, is it so weird to bitch about a discarded prospect who puts it all together the second he leaves your team?

back on subject,

Has anyone ever watched the Toyota Sports report (ABC-5)? Those guys are complete idiots. This Sunday it was a PD and WTAM guy, going on an on about how pitching clearly has been the indians strength, blah blah blah. Then I look at the stats and their overall ERA is 9th in the AL, with a bullpen ERA hovering above 4.00.

I don't call that a strength.

I call C.C. a strength though.

EDIT: typo on my error.
