Indians end ties with Bisons; switch to Clippers expected

Business First of Columbus

In a move that was expected, the Cleveland Indians this week notified the Buffalo Bisons they were terminating the baseball teams’ long-term Triple A affiliation agreement.  Severing the relationship essentially became a done deal in April, when Cleveland declined to extend its minor league affiliation agreement with Buffalo.  Cleveland had to wait until the Bisons’ season ended before dropping the team as its top affiliate.

The Indians are expected to move their Triple A franchise down Interstate 71 to Huntington Park, where the Columbus Clippers will play next spring. The Clippers were the affiliate of the Washington Nationals this year after losing a longtime agreement with the New York Yankees.

Guardians it is! The font and logo either need some tweaking, or will take a while to grow on me, but the name is a winner.

There were other good options, but I've always though this was the way to go. I'm happy its over. Let's move past it. I'm here for Baseball, and I'm here for Cleveland.

that's a shame, but glad to hear the bisons have other mlb affiliates lined up.

also, it's nice that the tribe's aaa team is moving to columbus....along with tons of other clevelanders. ha. the players will be happy they will have a nice new ballpark to play in too.

I think it's a good move, helps the organization try to claim fan base in central Ohio and it helps STO expand more into the Columbus TV market.

oh yeah, that too. i agree all in all it's a very smart move. keep it in-state!

Indians sign lease in Cleveland through 2023

Yahoo! Sports

September 15, 2008

CLEVELAND (AP)—The Indians have committed to playing in Cleveland through 2023.  The club signed a new lease with the Gateway Economic Development Corp. on Monday.  The previous lease was set to expire in 2013.  The Indians began play at Progressive Field, then called Jacobs Field, in 1994.

As part of the new lease with Gateway, the Indians will be permitted to play up to five home games at sites outside of the U.S. and Canada over any five-year period.  Gateway is a nonprofit organization that owns and operates Progressive Field and Quicken Loans Arena, home of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers.  The Cavaliers’ lease expires in 2027.

Clippers will be Indians' triple-A team, source says

Thursday,  September 18, 2008 10:23 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Columbus Clippers have signed a four-year deal with the Cleveland Indians to be the Tribe's top minor-league affiliate, a source told The Dispatch today.  It was widely speculated that the Clippers would sign with Cleveland to be the parent club when Columbus opens the 2009 season in Huntington Park in the Arena District.

The Clippers had spent the past two seasons as an affiliate of the Washington Nationals but allowed that agreement to expire this summer.  The Indians, whose Class AA affiliate is in Akron, had based their triple-A franchise in Buffalo, N.Y., since the 1995 season.

Hooray for over .500!

Andy Marte is quietly hitting .323 the past month.

^Kind of unimaginable after the first half of the season, but I believe the Tribe lead baseball in runs scored and OPS since the break.  A real shame they couldn't put it together 6 weeks earlier.

As a young kid, I found it impossible to believe that the Indians might never win a World Series in my lifetime.  Another year closer to the inevitable!  I feel like Chief Wahoo!!!!

chiefwahoo-1.jpg

I believe he resides at the Cleveland Historical Society.

^It is at the Western Reserve Historical Society Museum in University Circle... I saw it on Saturday.  :)

Thanks!

Dammit.. finish above .500!!

cc remains on fire and now old gomer pyle thome rockets the white sox into the post-season? ugh. hard to take.

good nite tribe, see you in the spring.

at least my dream of derek jeter ending his career on a .500 yankee team is starting to come true. umm, unless they pick up cc, which they probably will. double ugh.

C.C. is destined for arm troubles within the next 5 years.. read the papers in NYC, most of them don't want him.

It will be interesting to see how he does in the playoffs.  After leading the league in IP last year, he broke down in the playoffs.  he lead the league again this year...we'll see if it is to a different result.

He'll still get a monster contract from someone though.

Its so hard to watch playoff baseball without getting jealous of the other cities who get to enjoy it.  In my mind the baseball playoffs are the cream of professional sports.

Agreed.

I can at least creat an interest routing for Milwaukee, Tampa, & Cubs who I know has a fan base (well, not sure about the Rays fan base) that is similar in frustration to us here in Cleveland.

Although Manny and the Dodgers are sticking it to the Cubs right now...

I don't want the Cubs to win anything.. if they do, that'll leave the Indians as the team with the longest World Series drought.

In my mind the baseball playoffs are the cream of professional sports.

Ever seen a Rangers v Celtic, River Plate v Boca Juniors, Fenerbahce v Galatasaray, or Barcelona v Real Madrid match? Baseball playoffs dont even come close to any of those matches.

Well, yes I have. And I think that it is comparing apples to oranges. We could lapse into a giant futbol vs. whatever (I've spent a few years living in futbol countries, so I know what you're talking about.) and I've come to the conclusion that one will favor whatever they were raised with (hate ending a sentence with a prep--sorry).

Yeah Ive seen the futbol games on TV, and as a soccer advocate I think its very exciting.  Ive never been a part of it, and its never meant anything to me...However, staying up until 2 am to see Tony Pena hit a game winner, or seeing the tribe win their first world series game in 41 years back in 1995 definitely seals the deal for me.

Well, got an answer to this question...CC tanks again in the playoffs.

Yes, that was the CC we've come to know and love!!!

^ This might have something to do with his poor outing: From an article on SI.com    "Pitching on three days' rest for the fourth consecutive start, Sabathia had his worst outing since joining the Brewers in a trade with Cleveland on July 7."

  • 4 weeks later...

The Dodgers offered Manny a 2 year $60 million contract, and he wants a 4 year $80 million contract.  Is there any chance the Indians make a bid?  Sabbathia rejecting the 4 year $72 million contract (which is just absurd, especially for a pitcher) from the Tribe shows they are willing to spend that kind money  - I saw they go for it!

^I don't see the Indians making a bid for him, but I wouldn't be opposed to the idea of Manny coming back to Cleveland to possibly finish his career.  Sure could use him as a corner outfielder too...

the only way Manny comes back is if Shappy and Wedgie are no longer here.  A player like Ramirez flys in the face of their entire management philosophy of having good clubhouse guys and "grinders".

Agreed.  I'd rather have albert bell back at the Jake...er, the Prog.

I'd rather they bring Sabathia back.  Manny is not worth it.

Former Indians broadcaster Herb Score dies at age 75

by The Plain Dealer

Tuesday November 11, 2008, 10:04 AM

Former Cleveland Indians pitcher and broadcaster Herb Score's died this morning at age 75 in his room at home in Rocky River, the Indians confirmed today.  He was a brilliant Indians pitcher whose baseball career was virtually ended at age 23 when he was hit in the right eye by a line drive off the bat of Gil McDougald of the New York Yankees on May 7, 1957.

Then he became a Cleveland sportscasting institution, calling Indians games on radio and television for 34 years, longer than anybody else in the city's baseball history.  He gained a loyal following, although he did not have the greatest voice or elocution.  He was like a favorite uncle who talked baseball.  "For me, broadcasting the game is like sitting in the stands talking to the fellow sitting next to me," he said.

Sad..

awww  so sad

Very sad.

On another note, I thought he was older than that.

My favorite Herb Score moments would involve something like this....

"A swing and a deep fly ball to centerfield, this could be bad news for the Indians.  Baerga (2nd baseman) backs up to catch it."

He'll be missed.

My favorite was when he said 'By Land, By Sea, Baerga.

Oh man I had forgotten about that one.  Yes!

"And the Indians are heading to the World Series.. maybe.."

I wonder if the Indians will try to pursue Hoffman from San Diego again? They just withdrew his contract offer in an effort to cut down team salary.

He's 41.. very unlikely..

Yay Cliff!!!!!

Indians' Cliff Lee Wins Cy Young Award

NEW YORK -- Cliff Lee is a runaway winner for the American League Cy Young Award, capping a dominant comeback season that made him the second consecutive Cleveland Indians lefty to earn the honor. Demoted to the minors last year, Lee went a major league-best 22-3 this season with a 2.54 ERA. He received 24 of 28 first-place votes and 132 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America announced Thursday.

Lee became the third Indians pitcher to win the award, following Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry in 1972 and CC Sabathia last year.

Cliff!

Two years in a row!

Now if we could only win that series in late October...

Hurray! Another meaningless accomplishment to the fans of Cleveland..

Call me when we get rings..

(Sorry, I'm bitter today)

I find it pretty humiliating that at the beginning of the year we have the reigning AL Cy Young award winner and future AL Cy Young award winner on our team and they still crapped the bed.

CC SABATHIA PICKS YANKEES

SEVEN YEARS, $161 MILLION DEAL RECORD FOR PITCHER

By JOEL SHERMAN

LAS VEGAS – CC Sabathia is not going to play on the West Coast. He is not going to play in the National League. CC Sabathia is going to be a Yankee, The Post has learned exclusively.

After three straight days of face-to-face meetings between GM Brian Cashman and Sabathia, the big lefty decided he wants to spend the next seven years of his career as a Yankee. The decision came late last night after Cashman flew to see Sabathia at his home in San Francisco. By the time the meeting was concluded, Sabathia had informed the Yankees New York Yankees that he had made his decision to call New York his baseball home, the Post has learned.

There are still minor hurdles to finalize, notably that Sabathia must pass a physical. But after so much belief that Sabathia was stalling because he wanted to avoid New York, he agreed to the largest pitching contract in major league history, worth $160 million over seven years.

I hate the Yankees. They are rumored to be interested in Ben Sheets and a few other players also. Nothing would make me happier than seeing them miss the playoffs again even after going out and spending all this huge cash.
