Are you trying to start some?

Nope...just sad when a team sucks so badly they can't even inspire cross-state trash talk.

Meanwhile, the Reds are in first place in their division...

I am surprised a team this bad is even allowed to compete at the major level. It really is a minor league club stuck in the majors. It is really embarrassing to baseball. The lack of attendance (except these games) really shows that fans are tired of rewarding a bad product. They really are The Bad News Bears of the majors. As for the upgrades...they need to do something to get fans coming again and such will play on their curiosity. How about a new logo/uni-design that does not exude mostly what has been associated losing and laughter with the past? How about something that commands respect? Not all traditions are worth keeping. Oh.. I also have issues with the balloon releases on opening day. I will not spend a dime to watch this product anymore.

Some good ideas. Just don't spend too much money on them while they continue to suck.

Guardians it is! The font and logo either need some tweaking, or will take a while to grow on me, but the name is a winner.

There were other good options, but I've always though this was the way to go. I'm happy its over. Let's move past it. I'm here for Baseball, and I'm here for Cleveland.

Yes, the team is bad because of the unfair economic structure of MLB, so that means that the Indians should change their name and logo.

The thing that the Indians need most is for Selig to pull his head out of his behind and stop allowing teams to be good just because they play in a large market.

Where is the intrastate trash talk, what with the Indians playing the Reds?

Ha, the Reds can't even sweep the Indians.  How's that?

^ Yup, that's what I'm talking about.

Baaad omen, lol.

Don't get too excited there sport.  Wait for the annual mid-summer Reds meltdown.

You clearly know nothing about baseball if you think the Indians are "this bad".

Kerry Wood comes in and closes the door on the Reds?  Now that's embarrassing!  Seriously, if this one game costs the Reds a playoff spot, I'll be po'd.  My favorite teams are 1) Tribe, 2) Whoever plays the Yankees, 3) Whoever plays the Red Sux, and 4) the other Ohio team.

Indians’ Choo Is Thriving, but Duty Calls in South Korea

CLEVELAND — Imagine a high school where baseball is the only curriculum. How many boys would love that? No more pencils, no more books, only fastballs, changeups and hooks?

Shin-Soo Choo, the star outfielder for the Cleveland Indians, had that experience in Pusan, South Korea.

“I don’t think of school,” he said. “I just play baseball.”

As Choo described it at Progressive Field this week, he started a five-hour practice every morning at 7. More practice followed after an hour break. At 5 o’clock, the player-students broke for showers and dinner, then lifted weights from 9 to 10 p.m. They slept on campus and visited their families on Sundays.

The regimen worked for Choo, who was the best young player and pitcher in South Korea and signed with the Seattle Mariners, as an outfielder, for $1.35 million in 2000. But he said it left students with no career options except baseball and gave him a warped perspective on the game.

This has got to be good exposure for Cleveland in South Korea.

Ha - I just read that article and was going to post the same link.  A nice article.  Am happy I am not in NY this weekend to watch the carnage though.

The great thing about baseball is that even a mediocre Indians team can go into Yankee Stadium on a given night and beat the Evil Empire 22-0. :)

That was a great game during a very boring Indians season.  I even bought the video file of it from the MLB website.

However, I think this Indians team is much worse than mediocre.

Strangely enough, the Indians seem to be good for one of those types of games every few years.

http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/5880328/: too bad we're not seeing Javy in this series.

I was at that game!  (22-4) 3rd game ever at the new Yankee Stadium...lots of happy Indians fans at the park that day.  Not to mention I had brunch at 5 Points next to Natalie Portman and who knows how many beers at McSorley's before hand... ;)

It's going to be carnage this weekend.  Seeing the lineups on screen made me very depressed.

Well I'll happily eat my words for today!

Went to 3 games this weekend here in NY... this team is just not good... the bullpen is horrid, they get some good starts and of course the pen blows it.

^ haha you should have stayed home -- i brought the luck -- i went to one game n they won!

If they had a decent pen....this might have been three straight wins.

^I'm still trying to wrap my head around what happened to that bullpen following the 2007 season.  They had the best pen in the league in 2007 then they absolutely fell apart in 2008.  Perez and Betencourt couldn't be touched for an entire year and then they completely lost it and the entire bullpen has yet to recover.  This game is hard to understand sometimes.

This reminds me of Major League..

Cleveland nun named baseball super-fan

CLEVELAND — A Cleveland nun with a baseball habit is the winner of an annual award for distinguished service by a fan of the game.

A group called the Baseball Reliquary says Sister Mary Assumpta Zabas has had a passion for baseball since childhood and has been a huge supporter of the Cleveland Indians, baking cookies for the players and contributing a regular TV news segment on her beloved Tribe.

Oh. My. God.  What a crazy 9th inning.

Hahaha, wow!

OMG that wasnt even close

Wow... if I were a Tigers fan at that game I would have stormed the field.

Wow, Galarraga has got to be the nicest guy ever.

This might be the f-up that causes MLB to rethink its stance on instant replay.

As a Tigers fan, i'm thrilled that i wasn't watching that game.  I almost bought the MLB Extra Innings but if i'd been watching last night i might have killed someone.

As it stands, i feel awful for that umpire.  He effed up, sure...but it didn't change the outcome of the game and everyone knows it was a perfect game.  Gallaraga just pitched the first 28 out perfect game.

It wasn't a perfect game, Cabrera took too long to throw to first and Galarraga bobbled the ball.  If that play is clean, his name goes in the record books.  But it wasn't.

And MLB can't overturn this call, otherwise they'll be opening a huge can of worms.

I didn't see him bobble the ball in the replay.

The ump did not have the viewpoint to determine whether he bobbled the ball.  That was not the basis for calling Donald safe.  Regardless, it was not a clear bobble which would have justified a safe call.  After seeing it on replay, even Joyce admitted it was the wrong call.

My favorite part of the replay was Donald's reaction.... almost seemed like he knew a sin had been committed.

No way was that a bobble.  Even if it was bobbled, the ball was secure at least a half a stride before Donald reached base.

I doubt that the call will be overturned and this will be used as a catalyst to implement instant replay, unfortunately.

When I watched the replay I thought it was clear that he was out, but I could understand if Joyce thought he bobbled the ball or shuffled his feet. The whole play was just jerky and he snow-coned the ball and moved his glove in a motion that would indicate a bobble and his feet were shuffling around for the bag. There was a lot going on there which is why I don't envy officials in professional sports.

Still the wrong call, but these things happen. If this had happened in the 2nd inning we wouldn't be talking about it.

^I think you mean to say that "it was clear that he was out"....

IIRC, a "tie" goes to the runner, no?  Even if that is the case, I would say this has to be the exception.  2 outs, bottom of the 9th and a perfect game going.  Ballsy call by Joyce if there was any shred of doubt to it.... especially considering it was in Detroit.

This Indians team seems to get worse and worse as the season goes on.  I don't know how they don't lose 100-105 games.  It's like 1991, but without the young Albert Belle/Sandy Alomar glimmers of hope.  I'm really counting on Santana to fill that role so I can stay even a little bit interested.

^cabrera and sizemore out for the season is certainly a way to make your team get worse and worse as the season goes on.

that call was shameful. there is no excuse. it wasn't that close.

Isn't there another crazy prospect from Texas coming into the draft next year? I remember seeing some talk that he was considering going to play over seas or something so he could have been in this years draft. At least we could look forward to that...

by the way.. what the hell happened to tony sipp?

^I guess general suckyness is contagious.  I know Asdrubal and Grady being out hurts, but this team wasn't scoring much with them in there anyway.  I wonder if we'll ever see Grady version 05-08 ever again.  And I'm not sure Asdrubal would be doing any better than Donald's doing (I guess he's a minor reason for hope so far).  It's just so depressing to look at the Indians' drafts in the 2000s... it's the biggest bunch of nobodies ever.  At least the last couple drafts look a lot better.  I think I now follow the Aeroes and Clippers more closely than the Indians.

^Welcome to rebuilding

and while I'm not saying sizemore and asdrubal make us good... think about the following:

Grady Sizemore or Trevor Crowe and Shelley Duncan

Asdrubal Cabrera or Luis Valbuena

^Well Valbuena was already playing, even with Adrubal in there.  I don't think that's going to continue when Adrubal's back considering how much better Donald's been to this point.  But yeah, I know, rebuilding.  And pathetically, I'm still excited to watch the other minor leaguers get called up.  I can't wait to see Kearns and Branyan gone and to see some of the pitching- Hermann, anyway.

Call it a bobble, call it whatever you want, the ball was moving around in Galarraga's glove, and all-in-all the play wasn't clean.  It was much closer than people seem willing to acknowledge, especially considering the umpire didn't have the benefit of seeing the play in slow-motion.

Also, although I'd probably feel differently if the tables were turned, I don't believe that the pitcher should have been given the call just because he was in the process of making history.  And I certainly don't feel bad for the pitcher or Detroit.  The pitcher is making millions of dollars (and got a nice Corvette today from Government Motors on the taxpayer dime) and Detroit is a city that has had plenty of sports success in the past decade.  The ball can't always bounce your way all the time.  And it figures that the first time in a while that a Cleveland sports team catches a break is in a losing effort in a meaningless game.

i hate valbuena... i wanted to see donald and cabrera together as that is likely our combo at least for the next couple years.

the branyan signing actually made me angry.  it made no sense he isn't the difference between being good or not, and all it has done it force laporta into playing every 2nd or 3rd day, which is terrible for his development.

Happy Homecoming: Red Sox catcher has emotional return to Cleveland

By Tom Withers (CP) – 59 minutes ago

CLEVELAND — Cuddling with his five-year-old son while sitting in the opposing dugout, Victor Martinez fondly remembered a place where he had some of the best years of his life.

He felt at home.

Martinez was back in Cleveland on Monday, returning to the city where he began his major league career for the first time since the all-star catcher was traded to the Boston Red Sox last July. Martinez's smile was as wide as ever during an emotional homecoming at Progressive Field.

"I left a place I will always have in my heart, a place where I grew up as a player," Martinez said before the Red Sox opened a four-game series against the Indians. "But they traded me to a good place, a good team and I am really, really happy."

Last July, Martinez and his son, Victor, both broke down in tears in Cleveland's clubhouse after learning the 31-year-old had been dealt before the deadline. They never wanted to leave.

"It has been great in Boston. They have great fans, a great ballclub and a full house every night. But I miss Cleveland, too."

Victor's the man and I was really sorry to see him go (unlike Lee and most of the other guys the Indians got rid of last year).  I think his contract is up after this year, so hopefully the Tribe can re-sign him even if they don't really have a place for him to play every day.  I want him to finish his career here.

^Yeah, there's no way they will resign him.  I don't think the Sox will either.  He was my favorite too though.  Such a great professional competitor.  Would have been great if Cleveland fans had given him a loud ovation at tonight's game but... there weren't enough Cleveland fans to do anything loud.  Pathetic.  It's like the late 1980s again.

On the plus side, Frank Hermann is awesome.  My new favorite Indian.

I just watched Major League last night rather than the Indians game, and thought how our team now very closely resembles those which the movie was about.

That seems to be the consensus. I was at the game last night and we were quoting the movie too. Saw a post on FB today too by John Chandler (Former channel 5 weekend sportscaster now in Boston)  saying the same thing.

It is really weird being at the Jake when there is nobody there. Very creepy.

Russel Branyon got the Jake quote.

"His knees are shot, I wish we had him 4 years ago"

"We did"

" Well I wish we had him 8 years ago"

Looking at the roster

"This guy is dead."

"Cross him off the list the list then"

"I thought you said there was no highpriced talent on the team?"

"Dorn? He is just high priced"

All quotes are from memory so don't crucify me if they aren't 100%
