July 7, 201113 yr OK, here's where the saying "be careful what you ask for" comes into play. I wanted to see McAllister come up to the bigs. I hope I'm not going to be sorry for wanting it.... "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 7, 201113 yr ^As good as he's been in AAA this year, there's reason the Yankees traded him for Kearns last year... Would be an excellent theft if he turns into a productive MLB pitcher.
July 8, 201113 yr June was not kind to the Indians, but some momentum going into the break, and they have a better than even chance at the playoffs.
July 8, 201113 yr Boy was I surprised to wake up this morning and see that we won that game. I turned it off in the 8th... GO TRIBE!!!
July 8, 201113 yr I turned it off in the 8th, too. I turned on the computer this morning and thought I was looking at another game's score. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 8, 201113 yr I was so happy I forced myself to watch it last night. Fortunately I only watched the later innings of the game and didn't have to suffer through the majority of the game.
July 8, 201113 yr They might need some more magic tonight with this sad lineup. 1. Brantley, CF 2. Cabrera, SS 3. Hafner, DH 4. Duncan, LF 5. Cabrera, 2B 6. LaPorta, 1B 7. Kearns, RF 8. Hannahan, 3B 9. Marson, C
July 8, 201113 yr Ouch...we may be in some trouble lol. They might need some more magic tonight with this sad lineup. 1. Brantley, CF 2. Cabrera, SS 3. Hafner, DH 4. Duncan, LF 5. Cabrera, 2B 6. LaPorta, 1B 7. Kearns, RF 8. Hannahan, 3B 9. Marson, C
July 8, 201113 yr Sizemore i believe is still on a schedule of a periodic day off as a part of his recovery from the knee surgery.
July 9, 201113 yr Sizemore has fallen to among the ranks of LaPorta, Duncan and Kearns. His .220 batting average isn't helping the team, anyway. Seeing him in the line-up these days doesn't exactly put fear in pitchers anymore. He hasn't batted over .270 since 2007 and has hit only 26 home runs in the last three years: http://indians.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=429713 And with Talbott's piss-poor pitching tonight, it's going to take a lot of offensive production to beat the Blue Jays. July 9, 201113 yr Yikes that was an ugly game. Lots of runs but a whole lot of missed opportunities. Pronk left 8 runners on base. But 7 runs should be enough to win, so...I'm pretty sure I've seen enough of Talbot. I think there's a decent chance he's DFA'ed soon after the break if he doesn't turn it around fast. The guy showed some promise early least year, but has been pretty awful now since the second half of last year. Word is that Alex White is throwing again, so fingers crossed he really does make it back this year.
July 9, 201113 yr 12 runners left on base. Oy. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 9, 201113 yr But 7 runs should be enough to win, so...I'm pretty sure I've seen enough of Talbot. I had this exact same thought. You should never lose a game in which you score 7 runs. And Talbot's gotta go. I wouldn't mind seeing someone like David Huff get another shot, he's pitching well in Capital City.
July 9, 201113 yr On another note, maybe there will be a Cleveland-Pittsburgh Rust Belt World Series (I-76 Series?). Well, who knows.
July 9, 201113 yr Talbot is in trouble. He must feel like he is bringin the team down when everyone else gives the team a chance to win. Look for JeanMar to come back up real soon. That being said...if the tribe wins tonight, they will have won 8 of their last 12...good way to hit the all star break
July 9, 201113 yr And if they win Sunday too, they will have won 9 of the last 13 going into the All Star break! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 10, 201113 yr True, but they should be struggling to hit this much. These bats are a roller coaster ride...God forbud we can have a game where we just unload and score 10 runs
July 10, 201113 yr Well, I guess you're right, when taking a bigger picture look at why they lost this game. Hopefully they can make a move before the trade deadline. Otherwise we're probably just going to have to accept the fact that if this team is going to win the division, it's going to be on the backs of the pitchers. Which isn't something you normally see in the AL, but not entirely impossible.
July 10, 201113 yr I-76 doesn't go through Cleveland!! Maybe it does for those who believe that lebron was a hometown kid. Anyway, they better win tonight to guarantee first place at the all-star break. It could have huge negative consequences to this young team to play as well as they did in the first half and not be in first place at the break.
July 10, 201113 yr I was at the game last night and was mortified at how often Indians batters were in a free-swinging mood. Ever notice how batters with a high average also have a lot of walks too? They are patient and wait for the pitcher to make a mistake. Not these Indians.... "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 10, 201113 yr Ugh, terrible way to enter the break. Things I look forward to in the second half: Alex White returning (fingers crossed) Choo returning Talbot getting DFAed O-Cab and his .609 OPS playing less

They are patient and wait for the pitcher to make a mistake. Not these Indians.... Patience is a key in having good at bats. These batters have been swinging at some really bad pitches. Indeed, a terrible way to enter the break. The lack of offense is amazingly so consistent. Then when the offense is somewhat there, some part of the pitching at some point decides to take a dump.
July 20, 201113 yr The lack of offense appeared again last night and the only flames Perez was the throwing last night were on the skinny lead we had going into the ninth. While I'm pleased for the double-header sweep the day before, games like last night's really exposed this team's weaknesses. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 20, 201113 yr The offensive lineup last night was AAA'esque, especially with Hafner, Brantley, & Chisenhall sitting (not to mention Grady & Choo). Carrera batting lead-off, ouch!
July 20, 201113 yr Any time this team scores runs it's a minor miracle. I'm afraid without help our offense will ensure us second or third place in the central. Anyhow, I just heard that Carlos Beltran is open to a trade with ANY contending team EXCEPT the Cleveland Indians. Unbelievable. If you follow the NBA you know that the Cavs must overpay free agents to get them here. And, a topic of conversation this morning on WKNR is that Chargers wannabe free agent receiver Vincent Jackson will never want to live in Cleveland. Whatever the hell is wrong with Cleveland, what can we do to help fix this bad rep? Is it that the city is ugly (Joakim Noah) or is it the weather? The perception of a losing sports town? What is it????

What is it???? I think the problem with Beltran (and other front-runners who want a championship handed to them) is that the Indians aren't viewed as a legit contender. I think the entire league is waiting for the rest of the division to overtake us. I follow the NBA. Please show some examples where the Cavs have had to overpay free agents to bring them here. Is our free agent premium any higher than other teams? If not, then this is a factless stereotype spread by Cleveland haters. Was there any documented quote in which Vincent Jackson said he will never want to live in Cleveland? Or was this said about Jackson by others? Even if he wouldn't come here, that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with Cleveland. It means there's something wrong with Jackson. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 20, 201113 yr Masterson couldn't be more perfect. I feel bad for the guy, never gets a break. He needs to let up 0 runs to have any chance of winning and even when he does we still lose.

The Cavs having to overpay is taken as gospel by every radio personality on WKNR. To be fair, the Jackson thing was brought up by Chris Fedor. No mention of an official statement from Jackson. p.s. Jackson would be a really big help to any QB!!

Perez put some heat behind the bubblegum bucket he launched after the game.
July 20, 201113 yr Re Carlos Beltran there probably is a sense that we're not really contenders, as KJP said. And even though they did give big contracts to a couple people several years ago, the Indians are known for not being willing to pay top players competitively, going back to Jim Thome. And in the case of Thome, the fans here turned on him forever because he accepted an offer the Indians wouldn't match. That's cold. There's no direct evidence the Cavs ever had to overpay, but even at the height of the LeBron era we never seemed to have a shot at top tier free agents. And then you have Noah's comments. And Barkley's. Eva Longoria once said she'd be happy with Tony Parker getting traded anywhere but here. I think the city needs to promote itself better to the players' 18-34 demographic. It needs to be more aggressive in responding to the open public criticism it's been getting. Detroit has a much better reputation for coolness, and that's about the only major league city as torn up as ours is. We haven't had young leadership here since Kucinich and I think it shows. I also think the destruction of the Flats plays a role in this, because it was our sole claim to fame in terms of offering a fun party atmosphere. Back in the 90s our teams didn't have nearly as much trouble signing big-name free agents.
July 20, 201113 yr What are you talking about?! Perez put some heat behind the bubblegum bucket he launched after the game. Too bad his aim wasn't better while he was on the mound. Too many of his pitches, while over the plate, were below the strike zone. After he put runners on base, he seemed to over-compensate and left one high over the plate. Game over. Back in the 90s our teams didn't have nearly as much trouble signing big-name free agents. Agree for the most part. I don't blame Tribe fans for Thome, as Sox or Yankee fans would have been even worse imho. I actually felt worse for fan hatred toward Belle, who actually wanted to resign here but was persona non grata to John Hart by time. Aesthetically, we have some major "red flags" to overcome aesthetically...I'd like for the city to address those as they create a very negative first impression for visitors, but this isn't the thread for that. I think you're 100 percent dead on with the perception of our coolness. We definitely ARE a cool city...but in a less obvious, more hidden way. I was a little riled up this am ha ha. I still have a bad taste over Scott Rolen dissing us...and Joke-eem Noah....and Eva...and David Wells!! p.s. Did you guys hear who our starting OF is for us tonight. Folks, we are in trouble!!
July 20, 201113 yr Thome always said its not about the money and then left us for the highest offer. I think that aggravated a few people. Id love to see us bring back Thome and Vizquel for a year or so. Let them retire here and I think they could actually add to the team. Plus they sure would be a big draw for fans and we'd probably see an increase in attendance.
July 20, 201113 yr From what I can remember, the union was pressuring Jim to take the highest offer. I would be on the bandwagon for the Thome/Vizquel farewell tour! I'm a sucker for nostalgia, and they both could start in the OF for us tonight. Thome always said its not about the money and then left us for the highest offer. I think that aggravated a few people. Id love to see us bring back Thome and Vizquel for a year or so. Let them retire here and I think they could actually add to the team. July 20, 201113 yr at least hafner and chis are back in the lineup. Re: thome I hope that guy tears something in bp today and can never play again. I don't begrudge anyone for making the most they can in an open market. Never had any problems with belle or ramirez leaving... or for cc and lee essentially telling the organization they had no intentions of staying here unless they were going to be paid top dollar on the market thus forcing the hand with trades since the market economics of baseball made that impractical. Hey... that's the crappy system. But Jim Thome? Guy spent an entire summer walking around talking like he was moses cleveland, how someone would have to tear the jersey off of him. So he listened to the indians offer and decided to test the market. fine. got an offer from the phils. fine. asked the indians to match it. they did... now if everything he said about loving the organization, city, and jeresey meant as much to him as he said. that't it. but he simply took the indians response and went back to the phillies asking them to increase their offer. That's a load of horsecrap. He simply used the indians as leverage and as far as I'm concerned had the market cornered on the most disingenuous biggest ahole of a professional athelete in history until another cleveland player decided they needed their own primetime drama to announced a long ago made "decision". If I find Jim Thome on fire, I wouldn't dump a bucket of water on him... or something like that. Re: Beltran. I'm guessing he isn't interested in coming to cleveland as a contender because we are far and away the most flawed contender.
July 20, 201113 yr Oh and if the indians brought that disingenuous (insert explative here) back, i wouldn't watch a single game. I have as much interest in Thome rejoining the indians as I do in lebron rejoining the cavs in 6 years. Vizquel on the other hand....
July 20, 201113 yr Speaking of former player, my dad's seats are right behind first base and I always marvel about 2 things when I watch Sandy coach. How in shape he still is, he seriously looks in better shape than most of the players and how tall he is; how did he catch all those years with those long legs. Marson and Santana look like munchkins standing next to him. Maybe he can play OF tonight.
July 20, 201113 yr ^^^I think Pittsburgh is obviously the most flawed contender. The Indians are winning by being average at everything. Pittsburgh can't score any runs (23rd) and can't strike anybody out (29th). Milwaukee also has problems. They can't field and they're a team of mashers who aren't scoring runs at a much better clip than the Indians.
