August 12, 201113 yr Sorry, guys, Verlander got the job done tonight! Not a huge baseball or Indians fan but Detroit only won because of the error in the first inning. That game would have gone into extra innings if it weren't for that and who knows what would have happened at that point. Not to mention Santana's near 2-run blast late in the game. Yes, Verlander won, but he sure didn't make it seem easy.
August 12, 201113 yr Or, when Santana hit his home run, Hafner was near to getting on base right before him. Hafner had worked the count to 3-2 but then swung and missed at a ball that was out of the strike zone. Too many missed opportunities and mistakes last night. Can't do that when Verlander is pitching. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Can't do that when Verlander is pitching. No, but it's encouraging to me that we were right in a game where we made a ton of mistakes against a great pitcher for the team leading our division. It's also encouraging that we're scoring some runs and that the offense should only get better with Choo coming back (and hopefully will get better when Grady comes back as well).

I said this earlier, but more of these "encouraging" moments need to turn into wins at this point in the season. Otherwise in early October this team is literally going to be asking itself "what if" they had actually won a few of these close games...

Otherwise in early October this team is literally going to be asking itself "what if" they had actually won a few of these close games... I agree, but I think some of them are. We just went .500 in 10 games against the 3 AL division leaders (with 7 of those games on the road) even after 4 "encouraging losses".
August 12, 201113 yr Encouraging losses = being satisfied with mediocrity "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
August 12, 201113 yr Encouraging losses = being satisfied with mediocrity No, encouraging means just that. I see us moving in the right direction. It doesn't mean I'm satisfied with where we are, but I'm encouraged that we seem to be improving rather than self-destructing like we had been. It means that I expect the team to get better and it seems like it may realistically happen, not that I'm satisfied with them being where they're at.
August 13, 201113 yr Masterson still doesn't get the win. It has to be aggravating for how well he has been pitching.
August 13, 201113 yr Masterson still doesn't get the win. It has to be aggravating for how well he has been pitching. Three no-decisions in his last four starts, all of which the Indians ended up winning. Rough.
August 15, 201113 yr ^No joke! The only thing worse than a rain-out is a rain-out followed by an off day. Some serious withdrawal going on here. This team's going to have to pack in a lot of games in September!
August 15, 201113 yr And the only thing worse than that is seeing Carmona pitch against the White Sox! And against Buehrle no less!! Wednesday should be some fun, though Fausto has been somewhat solid since his return.

This team's going to have to pack in a lot of games in September! I think they're looking at something like 45 games in 44 days, including 4 double-headers. :-o The good news is that they do have the rotation depth to deal with such a schedule, but it's still going to be very difficult. And the only thing worse than that is seeing Carmona pitch against the White Sox! And against Buehrle no less!! Wednesday should be some fun, though Fausto has been somewhat solid since his return. What's his ERA against the ChiSox this year? Over 20.00 I would guess! Haha, this is kind of stupid but odd: Carmona is 5-12 with a 5.12 ERA on the season.
August 16, 201113 yr Two off days for the Tribe and they move a whole game closer to first. Gotta love those Tigers. And the forecast looks good for Chicago. Go Ubaldo!
August 16, 201113 yr Grrr, Verlander's going tonight for Los Tigres. Hopefully the Twins can squeak it out.
August 17, 201113 yr Great, one inning and two errors. Textbook example of how to lose. Edit: I guess Brantley's bobble was inconsequential enough not to be an error, but still.
August 17, 201113 yr Hafner is just horrible all he has to do if focus on hitting yet time after time he either strikes out or hits into a dp which he never runs it out im tired of this dude. He gives you a couple months of good ball a couple months of injuries and the rest of the season just downright aweful :-D
August 17, 201113 yr Hafner is not the problem. He's hitting almost .300 despite being physically worn and perennially injured. Tonight, fielding and pitching are the problem. I know we take great catches for granted, but there have been a lot of near-misses and Jimenez is making a really bad pitch for every really good pitch he makes. Edit: Another problem is this umpire. The strike zone for Floyd is far too generous.
August 17, 201113 yr Bottom of the 12th and the bullpen is now empty. As in there's nobody left, in Durbin we trust. :drunk: ... On to the 13th! ... and 14th
August 17, 201113 yr Arrrrrrrrrrrrgh. Well that was a waste of a lot of bullpen innings. And of 5 and half hours. Not sure I understand why Acta stuck with Hermann to open the 6th after the Tribe tied it up.
August 18, 201113 yr That's more like it. Fausto looked awesome out there. 2 games out headed into tomorrow and Masterson on the hill. Would be awesome to take this series and head into Detroit this weekend no more than 2 back.
August 18, 201113 yr I don't think Verlander is scheduled pitch against the Tribe this series. No reason they shouldn't take 2/3 again.
August 18, 201113 yr ^I hope you're right! Though I know some people have predicted that Leyland will move him up to Sunday's game to face the Indians. I think that would be Ubaldo v. Verlander, which could be pretty fun, depending which Ubaldo (and which Indians defense) shows up. I hope Kipnis is back tonight.
August 19, 201113 yr ^ wooo hoo! I will be the first to admit, i was skeptical of the Fukodome trade...i thought we needed power from the right side. This guy absolutely blows Buck and Kearns away. He is getting hits all over the field. Love it!! Come on Tribe-Get that pennant!!!
August 19, 201113 yr This should be a seriously exciting baseball weekend. I waste way too much of my late afternoons staring at the clock, counting down till game time. But booo to Kipnis maybe going on the DL :(
August 21, 201113 yr Sorry, guys, but I thoroughly enjoyed being at Saturday's 10-1 win by MY TIGERS, and this three game sweep... Doug Fister pitched a gem on Sunday! Now the Indians know how the Tigers feel when they lose more times than not at Progressive Field. ;)
August 21, 201113 yr ^Can't blame you for gloating. Brutal game, brutal weekend. This team has been an irritating tease. Forget 2010 Ubaldo, this version can't even match his 2011 Coors Field stats.
August 21, 201113 yr The team has bounced back all year. Im not ready to count them out, but they need to start playing with a little more urgency. I liked the 3rd inning on today, it was encouraging. I am FURIOUS with Jimenez getting rocked AGAIN, and then seeing him smile in the dugout!! How bout takin' out a water cooler or the bat rack, bro??
August 22, 201113 yr Everyone handles pressure differently. I'm not sure we want Ubaldo to go nuclear when he gets off the mound. Personally, I still don't see how this team can win the division. Detroit is better; Chicago is arguably better. And Cleveland is no longer playing to its own potential. Make me wrong, guys.
August 23, 201113 yr LOL at Chris Perez getting the W in that game. Is there a more meaningless player stat? I can't believe how much the Indians own Brandon League this year. And yeah, I know I might be the last one still paying attention to the Indians.
August 23, 201113 yr And yeah, I know I might be the last one still paying attention to the Indians. No way, I had the ESPN GameCast open the entire game while I was working.
August 23, 201113 yr ^ i hated them last night...but if Detroit loses tonight and we pick up another win...its only 4. Someway, somehow, they have to get consistent and get a little hot. Whens the last time we blew someone out??
August 23, 201113 yr Looks like Hafner is done for the season though. His ailing foot apparently requires surgery. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
August 24, 201113 yr And now 6 games out. The excitement going into last Friday now seems like months ago.
August 24, 201113 yr ^ Dont knot what happened. AT times they look like a playoff team (@Boston, @Texas,@Chicago)...then they play with no urgency and wet the bed against the worst team in the AL. Young team?
August 24, 201113 yr ^ Dont knot what happened. AT times they look like a playoff team (@Boston, @Texas,@Chicago)...then they play with no urgency and wet the bed against the worst team in the AL. Young team? A young team with a half-loaded gun. No Hafner, Kipnis, Grady, & Brantley. I don't know who their trainer is, but if anyone needs fired this year, it's him. Let's face it, this team was a year ahead of schedule like most thought. Let's just hope they can build off of this year, pick up another big bat or two, straighten Jimenez out, and stay away from the injury bug next year.
August 24, 201113 yr I am by no means celebrating this, but Alex White made his Rockies debut last night and got rocked. Against the Astros. Though it was in Coors field. Should mean nothing, really, but we all have morbid curiosity how the other half of the trade turns out...
August 25, 201113 yr Thome always said its not about the money and then left us for the highest offer. I think that aggravated a few people. Id love to see us bring back Thome and Vizquel for a year or so. Let them retire here and I think they could actually add to the team. Plus they sure would be a big draw for fans and we'd probably see an increase in attendance. Most likely Thome will be back by tomorrow. Now we just need to bring back Vizquel!
