April 29, 201411 yr Hey guys, back to my original post on the lease. Is it true the Dolan's don't have to pay rent if a certain attendence isn't acheived? Possibly, but it's not an incentive to not go over 1.85 million in attendance unless they're making less than $0.75 profit from each ticket sold. Otherwise, the additional tickets bring in more money than the rent they'd pay on them (and they still wouldn't pay any rent on the first 1.85 million tickets sold).
April 30, 201411 yr Even I could produce as much offense as the Indians are right now. Well, you ARE pretty offensive.
April 30, 201411 yr Hey guys, back to my original post on the lease. Is it true the Dolan's don't have to pay rent if a certain attendence isn't acheived? I think the lease was completely renegotiated in 2004, so I don't think the summary on that Marquette web site still applies. The details of the current lease are tough to track down. I don't think it's available on line (I've looked) and the reporting about it is very cursory and sometimes contradictory. The financial history of Gateway is exceptionally complicated thanks to the huge cost overruns during construction, the county bail-out, and the lease amendments.
May 3, 201411 yr Got a chance to sing the national anthem with the Cleveland Pops Chorus at tonight's awesome game. Thought I'd share a few pics.
May 3, 201411 yr ^congrats! Must have been tons of fun. Maybe you were the good luck charm that helped them finally win last night.
May 3, 201411 yr ^Hey Winterton sounds nice; glad you had fun and are enjoying your intro to Cleveland -- nothing like singing the N.A. before a stadium full (or partially full in Cleveland's case these days) house... I had the occasion to do it several time before the Phillies... ... back to the game: great to see us take our frustrations out last night over our new (or should I say Terry Francona's) beeatch: the Chicago White Sox, after that disastrous West Coast swing... Yet, as bad as it was, we have our own Indians’ Zen Master in Tito, I'm not going to worry much about them .... look at the many adversities this team went through last year: long losing streaks (including 8 and 5 game L streaks), having our closer flip out and having our ace, Masterson, get put on the DL right after Labor Day, and yet we STILL rallied to make the playoffs, first time in 6 years (and the ONLY Cleveland team since 2010) … Francona, after all, is the man who broke the 86-year Curse of the Bambino in Boston, so it would be very foolish to count him out, … ever… … is it just me, or is Nick Swisher morphing into Chris Perez before our eyes? Lately Mr. Sunshine (“Brohio”) has become Mr. Bitchy/whiner, cursing out reporters Wed night after the LAA debacle and, now, ripping the media after he has a decent game and the team’s bats finally coming out… SHUT UP ALREADY and just play the friggin’ game. Let your bat (and questionable glove in Swisher’s case) to the talking.
May 18, 201411 yr How bout that Tribe eh? At least they didn't give up two touchdowns today to end the series. Sheesh. On a good note the A's chartered 757 looked great at Burke Lakefront all weekend. Looked even better today leaving town! ;)
May 18, 201411 yr Seriously, when are Swisher and Santana going to start to hit? 0-9 between the two of them today. Their batting averages COMBINED are still lower than Chisenhall's Avg. When do you take one or both out of the lineup?
May 22, 201411 yr Beating the Tigers is the best indication that the Indians have a chance. Divisional games matter more, and nobody else in the division matters more than Detroit. We're front-paged on ESPN right now, by the way, with a lovely pic of Asdrubal Cabrera prancing across the plate for the win: http://espn.go.com/mlb/
May 22, 201411 yr Always fun working downtown with a day game. I could tell when the Indians won by the fireworks going off. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
May 25, 201411 yr my friend txtd me this today - they went to see the tribe beat the tar out of the o's on the way back from obx
June 10, 201411 yr That was crazy! This team has been exceptionally fun to watch the last couple weeks.
June 10, 201411 yr I was really hoping that Lonnie was going to get another chance this year. After I saw him hit very well in the playoff game against Tampa when our big boppers were not hitting, i was hoping that would breed some confidence. The guy is now a legitimate contender for the batting title. Now can he keep it up? Probably not, but he has enough at bats. Its clear he worked hard and focused in the past year.
June 10, 201411 yr And suddenly, Lonnie Chisenhall has one of the best games ever--literally, one of the best games ever, no exaggeration--hitting at the absolute maximum of his ability. Especially impressive because it was more technique than pure power. He should go to the all-star game. When was the last time somebody had stats like his after ~200 AB? He'll be eligible for the batting title starting in about 20 at-bats, but it will take a huge write-in campaign to get him to the game. This is the sort of development that the Indians needed. There's no real ceiling on what they can do if they get reasonably consistent pitching.
June 10, 201411 yr Lonnie was supposed to be the young phenom, 3rd base prospect 3/4 years ago ... After his struggles, particularly offensively, some fans and media were writing the kid off... But the Indians appear to have gotten it right ... obviously.
June 10, 201411 yr and to think, kipnis and santana, the hitters, arent even hitting yet. well, kipnis before yesterday. no telling what will happen when those guys pick it up. 2 back from detroit now? good times!
June 22, 201410 yr Does anyone track how the Indians perform in front of large (25K+) home crowds the last 2-3 years? Seems like they wig out and lose more often than win. June 22, 201410 yr Does anyone track how the Indians perform in front of large (25K+) home crowds the last 2-3 years? Seems like they wig out and lose more often than win. I think tonight they played well, there were just some questionable management calls made in key moments.
June 22, 201410 yr Funny, I was wondering the same thing. Would be an annoying coincidence UPDATE: I just checked, and if I counted right, over this season and last season, we are actually an even 11 and 11 in regular season home games that draw more than 25k. Only 4 and 6 in games with more than 30k.
June 22, 201410 yr Does anyone track how the Indians perform in front of large (25K+) home crowds the last 2-3 years? Seems like they wig out and lose more often than win. Corey Kluber's first-pitch woes, John Axford's demise and Carlos Santana's sizzling stick: Zack Meisel's musings 5. Under pressure: I have received inquiries about how the Indians have fared in front of large crowds at Progressive Field. So, I did some research. Since the start of the 2012 campaign, the Tribe is 7-10 when playing behind a home crowd of at least 30,000. The team went 3-4 in 2012 and 3-5 in 2013. http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2014/06/cleveland_indians_corey_kluber.html
June 22, 201410 yr You know..... If they want crowds to show up for games on a regular basis, this is not the way to attract us to The Prog! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 10, 201410 yr too young. good in the field, but not much of a hitter. a lot of memories of veryzer from islip: http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/tom-veryzer-dead-lier-had-12-year-career-in-majors-1.8746348
July 15, 201410 yr .500 at the break. Do they have a run in them? I think their pitching may be good enough, especially if Masty can get back on track. The offense is under-performing relative to their career average production, except for Chisenhall and Brantley. If they could muster a run, they're going to have to get it here. And they've got to cut back on the defensive miscues. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
July 15, 201410 yr Really? I am not sure how I feel about it. I am optimistic if they can can get the errors under control. As horrible the fielding has been its amazing they are even at the break. I have pretty much convinced my self that Masterson has been trying to pitch through injury because it was a contract year. Hopefully he stays on the DL long enough to heal up and didn't develop any bad habits that need to be broken. Interesting fact Cabbrera is 2 for 42 when bases are loaded with 2 outs. He was in that situation twice on Sunday.
July 15, 201410 yr Any kind of attempt at a run will happen this coming weekend. To have any chance at all, they can do no worse than a split with Detroit. If they fall any more than 7.5 behind, they would be hard pressed to recover.
July 15, 201410 yr I think the division is a lost cause, but still a decent shot (25%?) at the second wild card spot.
July 15, 201410 yr They have a negative run differential (-8), which is very telling. I think they were lucky to win so many games last year and are playing at their level right now. For comparison: OAK is +145; Angels are +89; SEA, +57; DET, +50; TOR, +19. The numbers are skewed, somewhat, in the west because texas and huston are so bad (-108 and -88, respectively).
July 15, 201410 yr 76 Errors....76 errors. Chis and A Cab have 27 between the two of them....that's going to kill your Run Differential. Edit: I hate to pile on A Cab but he's batting .048 with 2 outs and runners in scoring position. He's been there 42 times. That's a lot of stranded runners. July 15, 201410 yr I does. But that IS the product. They will continue to make errors because that is what they do.
July 15, 201410 yr Is it time for Lindor? I know for years people have said that A Cab's numbers didn't reflect how good he actually is, but I think he just makes the routine plays look hard.
July 15, 201410 yr ^I have a feeling we won't see Lindor till late April next year so they can keep team control through 2021. I can't wait to see him, though-- the entire infield has been so brutal to watch this season.

July 30, 201410 yr MLB Trade Deadline Live: Justin Masterson Reportedly Traded To Cardinals by NESN Staff on Wed, Jul 30, 2014 at 12:40PM 2:07 p.m.: The St. Louis Cardinals have found some pitching help. According to multiple reports, the Cleveland Indians have traded right-handed pitcher Justin Masterson to the Cardinals in exchange for James Ramsey. 1:25 p.m.: Despite the fact that David Price is pitching for the Tampa Bay Rays right now, the organization is reportedly still open to moving the left-hander. 1:23 p.m.: The Miami Marlins have said publicly that they’d be interested in adding a starting pitcher who’s not a rental. However, they may still be one of the handful of teams with reported interest in Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester. The Sun-Sentinel (via MLB Trade Rumors) cites an American League source in contact with the Red Sox who has said the Marlins are “not completely” out of the Lester running. However, the Marlins are unlikely to part with top pitching prospect Andrew Heaney for Lester or any other rental. 12:58 p.m.: The Royals may have interest in John Lackey, but they reportedly have cooled on another Red Sox player. They’re looking to add an outfielder, but it’s unlikely that outfielder will be Boston’s Jonny Gomes. 12:52 p.m.: The latest on the Atlanta Braves: Who isn’t at this time of the season, though? 12:40 p.m.: The Kansas City Royals reportedly have interest in Red Sox starting pitcher John Lackey. According to both ESPN.com and The Kansas City Star report that the Royals either have expressed interest in or looked into acquiring the Boston right-hander. Lackey has been very effective since having Tommy John surgery in 2011, and he has a team-friendly team option for the 2015 season. The Royals might not be alone, either. 12:30 p.m.: The Orioles are still looking to add pitching. 12:25 p.m.: It certainly looks like David Price is staying put. The Tampa Bay Rays’ matinee game has started, and Price is getting the start. If there was a trade in the works — or even if the Rays were contemplating a trade — he likely wouldn’t have started. Any team looking to acquire the left-hander would almost certainly wanted him to sit out the start for two reasons. One, that team wouldn’t want to risk injury. Two, that team would want Price to start as soon as possible after acquiring him. This also could affect the Red Sox. If Price is indeed off the market, the return in a potential trade for Jon Lester will be even bigger now that one big-name starter won’t be moved. 11:50 a.m.: The New York Yankees were one of the teams rumored to have interest in Colorado Rockies left-hander Brett Anderson, but it doesn’t sound like Anderson is going to be moved before the deadline. However, things change quickly this time of year. 11 a.m.: The talks don’t all center around starting pitching. Here’s the latest on Texas Rangers outfielder Alex Rios, who could be on the move before Thursday afternoon. 10:45 a.m.: Here’s what Jon Lester has to say on the matter via his Twitter account. 10:35 a.m.: Philadelphia Phillies left-handed pitcher Cole Hamels is a name that’s been thrown around in reports. It sounds as if there is plenty of interest in the southpaw. With that interest comes high demand, and the Phils reportedly are asking for a lot in return. This is what the USA Today wrote Wednesday morning about a potential haul in return for Hamels. “Yet, according to one-ranking official directly involved with the talks, the Los Angeles Dodgers recently asked for Hamels. They were told the price would be three of their top prospects – center fielder Joc Pederson, shortstop Corey Seager and left-handed pitcher Julio Urias.” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale quickly added that the Dodgers said thanks, but no thanks. The reason the asking price for Hamels is so high is that he’ll have four years left and $90 million left on his contract after this season. 10:18 a.m.: Then again… http://nesn.com/2014/07/mlb-trade-deadline-live-all-eyes-on-futures-of-david-price-jon-lester/
July 30, 201410 yr Masterson traded to the Cards for a quality minor league prospect. Given the season he was having and his impending free agency, I'm not sure this earns us the label of "sellers" at the trade deadline EDIT - clvlndr beat me to it...
July 30, 201410 yr I agree, maybe if Masterson was in 2013 form this would be packing it in, but 2014 form has been bad. Now they won't feel obligated to start him and his 5.51 ERA.
