Friend suggested calling the Indians “The Tribe”.  Just throwing it out there as I thought it was a very good idea.

Guardians it is! The font and logo either need some tweaking, or will take a while to grow on me, but the name is a winner.

There were other good options, but I've always though this was the way to go. I'm happy its over. Let's move past it. I'm here for Baseball, and I'm here for Cleveland.

Seriously?  This has already been suggested.  It's pretty obvious that if they're going to get rid of the name "Indians" that they wouldn't keep Native American imagery.  What would be the point?

My question is - how long is the Brad Hand failed experiment going to go on ?

^ I hope it ended tonight. He is totally done, I don’t even see him doing any kind of job in relief. Maybe a guy to eat up some innings in a laugher. That’s it.

I understand a friendly rivalry, but are Twitter wars between Cincinnati and Cleveland really necessary?

^ oh geez, yeah like that's what we all need right now.

Indians manager Terry Francona dealing with blood-clotting issue

The Cleveland Indians might be without manager Terry Francona even longer than expected.

Francona has already missed 15 games with a gastrointestinal issue, and Chris Antonetti, the team's president of baseball operations, disclosed Tuesday that the 61-year-old manager has also been dealing with blood-clotting problems.  Antonetti said doctors at the Cleveland Clinic inserted a stent last week to help Francona's blood flow "around what was a clogged filter in his veins."

Francona is recovering in his downtown apartment, and Antonetti said there is no timetable on when he'll back.

oh geez. tito has had these health issues for a long time. i appreciate him being up front and public about it. at least as upfront as any of us fans need to know that is. feel better soon skipper!

Indians' ratings on SportsTime Ohio lead MLB and are on pace to be club's second-best since 2007

Kevin Kleps - Sep. 9, 2020

"Last season, the Tribe's ratings norm was the second-best in MLB, finishing just shy of the St. Louis Cardinals' 6.6 average. Going by the percentage of games played, the Indians' 2020 average is 19% ahead of the ratings norm at the same point in 2019. The Tribe is on pace to post a top-three finish in the local ratings race for the fourth consecutive season and should land in the top five for the sixth time in seven years."

Indians clinch playoff spot, reflect on odd 2020 regular season: Walk-Off Thoughts

With one swing, Jose Ramirez sent both a ball sailing into the night and the Indians to the postseason. With one swing, he might have moved his name to the top of the American League MVP race. And with one swing, Ramirez continued his tear through the league and further separated himself as the hottest hitter in the game.

big congrats to shane beiber -- and go tribe!

Bieber made history, winning the American League "Triple Crown" of pitching. He led the American League with eight wins (losing just once), 122 strikeouts, and a 1.63 ERA.

Congrats Shane....but tonight he doesn't seem to have it. Which really worries me because I can easily see Carasco getting knocked around tomorrow.

The Tribe really needed to win the first game.  This is not good.

uuugggghhhhh -- lucky everyone elsewhere is watching the debate.

I guess we Cleveland fans should be good at handling disappointment - we've had so much of it.  And the Indians have hurt the most in recent years, because they've had legitimate shots to be champions or, in other situations to "move on". They've been contenders consistently.   But, losing doesn't get any easier.  I tried to tell myself, "it doesn't matter as much this year - it's a Covid season with an asterisk" - but it sure didn't feel that way tonight.  So, granted I'm in a foul mood this evening - but my thoughts: this playoff season was a major choke job at multiple levels.  Example - in roughly 7 innings, the Indians starting pitching gave up 11 runs in the series.  Brad Hand blew a save at the wrong time.  Our biggest star, soon to depart, lost his luster. The defense was inconsistent, at best.   Clutch hitting in key situations was frequently nonexistent.  Yeah, the Tribe scored 9 runs in game 2 - but they STILL missed golden chances to score - like the bottom of the 8th inning, failing to bring home a vital insurance run with men on 2nd and 3rd and only one out.  All season we told ourselves, "We suck at the plate, but our pitching is among the best in the league - that gives us a fighting chance."  And yet again, we're very quickly disappointed this October.  Yeah, we made it to October - but only for about an hour of it.  Thanks Indians for another entertaining season, but unfortunately, yet another year with no title.  Let's hope the Browns become winners in 2020 - it's just the kind of year when they might have a shot at that.

^ yes very well said -- the short series was a perfect example of the team as a whole this oddball season.

cold/hot/missed opportunities and all.

thanks to the tribe for all in all a fun season baseball-wise anyway and often being highly entertaining.

i dk what next year will bring for them and mlb, but we always keep hope alive.

I believe Brad Hand and Carlos Santana will be free agents.  One or both may be gone next year.  And Lindor will likely be traded this off-season.  The AL Central division is not so weak anymore.  So their window of opportunity might be slamming shut on their fingers.

Those three guys are all major duds when it counts.

I am actually mad right now. I'm usually disappointed at the end of every season but not mad....this year is different.

I mean I'm not mad at Carasco as I knew he wouldn't have a great game and I'm just glad he's alive. Also Jose Ramirez is awesome. But  otherwise our guys barely had a pulse. Lindor has been practically brain dead all season. We have players in the lineup batting .138 and and consistently reliant upon AAA caliber players.

That being said it's quite obvious we didn't really belong in the playoffs. When you're "strength" on your roster is pitching and you give up 100 runs vs. NYY it's just not even the slightest bit enjoyable.

Lindor has his bags packed already.  The Indians will trade him for more "prospects".  In hindsight, they should have traded him last off-season when his value was greater.

Good point. The memory of this season will make me not miss Lindor so much.

It's much more forgivable to have a good defensive-but-average hitter at short. What's awful is having outfielders who can neither hit nor field their position, ie our misfit outfield.

ABOUT THE NAME

I was told the Paul Dolan ownership team is still “talking to various people” about the name, adding “no final decision has been made.”

The Indians have talked to Native American groups, sponsors, civic leaders and others as they ponder the name change. But in this political climate, the Tribe is not about to say, “Never mind, we’re not changing anything.”

A change will be coming. Here is what I’ve been hearing:

1. At some point in the next few months, the Indians will announce “we plan to change the name."

2. They will not announce the name without working to engage fans, sponsors and others in finding a new name for the franchise.

3. It won’t be a simple change to “the Tribe.” They want to move away from anything close to a Native American reference.

4. The team also is learning it’s hard to figure out what is the best decision. It’s one thing to say, “OK, we’re not the Indians anymore.” Then what? That’s why the NFL’s Washington franchise is the Washington Football Team as they try to decide the next move.

5. When they do announce a change will be coming, it won’t happen until 2022. They will play as the Indians in 2021

Hopefully it will be a name that will allow for a nice logo.  Block C is pathetic.

^ at this point I hope they go the washington fb route and just be the clevelanders.

that would be fine and actually a very classy nod to the orchestra.

Easier than paying Lindor, I guess. What a joke.

That's great. I get all the history attached to the Indians name, but the name and past mascots have racist connotations.

This can be used as a time to help reinvent the image of the team and city somewhat with Marketing.

Image and marketing....these things are the definition of superficial.

The real opportunity was to keep the name and make it count toward real support for Native Americans.

Edited by surfohio

Did the Washington Redskins just forego a name altogether? That's what it sounds like from the NYT article which keeps referring to the team as the "Washington Football Team."   If we get a new name/mascot, I like the Cleveland Spiders.

I like this concept and am intrigued by it, though it would be really hard to pull off I think.

It would've required actually making connections with the Native community and providing resources to support Native causes. Channeling a percentage of merch sales would've been the obvious way, but I understand that comes with all kinds of contractual issues that could be hard to work out. I suppose it's just easier to change the name.

This name change is a good thing and a long time coming.  I disagree that keeping the name “Indians” is supportive of Native Americans when the word Indian in regards to Native Americans/Indigenous Peoples is a misnomer in the first place. The name Indian was given to them by European explorers who got lost. Per Brittanica.com:

“The word Indian came to be used because Christopher Columbus repeatedly expressed the mistaken belief that he had reached the shores of South Asia. Convinced he was correct, Columbus fostered the use of the term Indios (originally, “person from the Indus valley”) to refer to the peoples of the so-called New World.”  https://www.britannica.com/topic/Tribal-Nomenclature-American-Indian-Native-American-and-First-Nation-1386025

Also, according to the article below, the Indians team has been reaching out to and engaging the Native American community regarding the name change.

“Following the police killing of George Floyd back in May and the subsequent nationwide protests against racial inequality, the Indians announced they were in "discussions" to drop the nickname as well. Owner Paul Dolan pledged to meet with local Native American groups "to better understand their perspectives," and it appears those conversations have led to a decision to rebrand.”

They are staying with Washington Football team until after next season when they come up with a replacement name.

Just play baseball.

I like Cleveland Spiders. Isn't that their original name anyway or something?

Is spelling it "Spyders" too edgy? Lol

Nah.  People who are afraid of spiders will complain.  Maybe sports teams should just eliminate names.

Anything but Spiders/ Spyders. It's an awful name,

Red Bulls.

^ ny/nj already has that one — and a stadium too.

even if its temporary i hope its the clevelanders over the cleveland baseball team.

Source: While the Indians confirm the name is changing, they haven't confirmed what the name will be. I can tell you it will NOT be The Cleveland Baseball Club. Earliest this will happen is 2022. Might even take longer.

How about teams keep names and only change the ones that have problematic origins/connotations?

Sarcastically suggesting that teams eliminate names altogether because some long time inappropriate names are finally being dropped does not acknowledge what the actual issues are to the groups that the names represent.
